If their analysis is correct the Alps are going to get hotter springs and summers with more sun and less rain. The good news for the winter tourism industry (or at least those operating on the higher resorts) is that winters will bring higher levels of snow. This last item is of particular interest as previous reports I’ve seen has suggested that the Alp would see less snow – our understanding of climate changing is developing all the time.

What remains consistent in the report is that despite the increased snow the Alpine glaciers, which play an important role in the supply of water across central Europe, are in trouble. The common excuse for secrecy when it’s not somehow connected to our ‘national security’ is that some news is so awful, people couldn’t possibly stomach it. Major propaganda organs maintaining a comfortable stance from truth prefer conjuring feel-good, candy-coated Newz to detach the unwitting with modern-day classics like the Perfect Vagina. Case in point: the Grímsvötn volcano which possibly erupted yesterday. Located just outside the East Volcano Zone of Iceland, Grímsvötn is not far from volcanoes YourWeatherBlog has already written about:  Katla and, of course, Eyjafjallajökull.

Found within the Vatnajokull glacier, the vent of Grímsvötn lies beneath 650 feet of ice. I say “possibly erupted” because the eruption has, thus far, only been identified by localized flooding resulting from the massive melt of ice. The town of Gigja, in Southeast Iceland, began seeing increased river volume last Thursday and began flooding yesterday; experts estimate the flood may reach its peak in another couple of days. As of this morning, the massive underground tremors indicating an explosive eruption have not occurred.

It’s not surprising that Grímsvötn has erupted. Iceland is one of the most active volcano zones on Earth and Grímsvötn is the most active volcano on Iceland. Prior to, and following the eruptions earlier this year of Katla and Eyjafjallajökull, the region is highly susceptible to eruptions.

Grímsvötn previously erupted in 2004. The week-long eruption disrupted air travel but  not to the scale of the disruption in April due to the Eyjafjallajökull eruption. Another week-long eruption occurred in 1998. Strombolian in nature, ash from Grímsvötn’s eruptions typically remain below 25,000 feet and therefore don’t typically interfere with air traffic on such a scale as ash that exceeds 30,000 feet would.

Other eruptions that have occurred over the past week include the Sheveluch volcano on the Kamchatka Peninsula (eruptions began on 10/26, have continued most of the past week and volcanic ash has reached 29,500 feet), as well as the Klyuchevskaya Sopka volcano also on Kamchatka. Mount Merapi in Indonesia Central Java erupted on 10/22. The Anak Krakatau (Krakatoa) volcano of Indonesian Archipelago posted 117 small eruptions on Thursday, 10/29 while another volcano, Dempo, at Pagaralam (province of South Sumatra), is showing signs of increased activity.

“…Václav Klaus (Czech pronunciation: [ˈvaːtslaf ˈklaus]; born 19 June 1941) is the second President of the Czech Republic (since 2003, reelected 2008) and a former Prime Minister of the Czech Republic (1992–1997). An economist by trade, he is co-founder of the Civic Democratic Party, the Czech Republic’s largest center-right political party.^[3][4] Klaus is a eurosceptic,^[5][6] but he reluctantly endorsed the Lisbon treaty as president of his country.^[7] He has been called “the Margaret Thatcher of Central Europe”.^[8]

Klaus grew up in the upper-middle class residential Vinohrady neighborhood of Prague and graduated from the University of Economics, Prague in 1963; he also spent some time at universities in Italy (1966) and Cornell University in the United States (1969).

During the Prague Spring he published articles on economics in the pro-reform, non-communist magazine Tvář (The Face) and the leading weekly Literární noviny. He then pursued a postgraduate academic career at the (state) Institute of Economics of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, which he left (by his account, being forced out for political reasons) in 1970. He subsequently, from 1971 to 1986, held various positions at the Czechoslovak State Bank. In 1987 Klaus joined the Prognostics Institute of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences.

In 1995, as Prime Minister, he applied for and was awarded the degree of Professor of Finance from his alma mater, so he is sometimes addressed as “Mr. Professor” as is customary in the Czech Republic. As the president, Klaus occasionally teaches a seminar course in economics at the University of Economics. The course focuses on Klaus’s free-market concerns.

Since 1990, Václav Klaus has received nearly 50 honorary degrees and published more than 20 books on various social, political, and economics subjects. Klaus is a member of the Mont Pelerin Society. He has published articles in the libertarian free-market Cato Journal. On May 28, 2008, Klaus gave the keynote address at an annual dinner hosted by the Competitive Enterprise Institute, a free market advocacy group in Washington, D.C., and received its Julian L. Simon Memorial Award.

Václav Klaus is married to Livia Rosamunda Klausová, a Slovak economist. During his Premiership, she was appointed to the board of the state-controlled bank Česká spořitelna. They have two sons, Václav (a private secondary school headmaster) and Jan (economist), and five grandchildren.^[3]

It has been claimed that Klaus has had several extramarital affairs. The first, in 1991, was with Eva Svobodová.^[9] In summer 2002 Klaus was photographed by a tabloid as having a “special relationship” with 24 year old economy student Klára Lohniská; this was treated by both the press and the public with remarkable sympathy.^[10] One paper claimed he spent the night after his second presidential inauguration (7 March 2008) with 25 year old Petra Bednářová.^[11]

In his youth, Klaus used to play basketball and minor-league volleyball. Before his recent hip operation he was an active tennis player and skier.^[3]

Klaus became the foreign member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts in 2009.^[12]

The report also notes that an international registry would verify that emissions cuts that are paid for are being carried out, but if the verification system was ineffective the EU might create its own independent fund.
