Voor het weekend heb ik eigenlijk nog iets belangrijks te vertellen. Woensdag was het BGGD#20 op een wel erg originele locatie. Namelijk de net geopende ‘Big Blue‘ van Van Marcke.

Big Blue is een uniek informatie-, verkoop- en expertisecentrum van Van Marcke. Het brengt alle kennis en spelers rond haalbare energievriendelijke oplossingen voor warmte en water samen. Om particulieren en professionals juiste, concrete en begrijpbare informatie en persoonlijke begeleiding te geven. Bij Big Blue kom je om te leren, kiezen, kopen en (laten) installeren.

En we werden die avond niet alleen verwend door de inspirerende locatie en catering, maar ook door een voordracht van Serge De Gheldere die je moet kennen als ambassadeur van Al Gore’s Climate Project.

Daarna kwam er het enthousiast verhaal van Caroline Van Marcke (@carodou) die ons wat meer vertelde over de geloofsovertuiging van Van Marcke en het verhaal van de Big Blue.

Ik ga alvast eens teruggaan, om het eens rustig in me op te nemen. En ook nog wat mensen mee te nemen die misschien baat hebben bij deze info. En omdat ik een paar dagen na actie schrijf, kan je ondertussen ook al wat meer info en reacties vinden op de Brussels Girl Geek Dinner blog (mercikes Clo!!!):

De ‘fame’ attitude zat er goed in! LOLZ

Wow, wat een dag – avond – nacht! De voorstelling van mijn boek tijdens Brussels Girl Geek Dinner #16. De avond startte mooi met een inleiding van SAP Lounge, die ons de mogelijkheid gaven hun mooie locatie te gebruiken. Daarna was Emmanuel van F.A.C.T.S. aan het woord, die ons ook een gratis toegangsticket meegaf. Ook de goodiebags zijn weer om te snoepen: naast een goede pot Lotus Crunchy Speculoos Pasta kunnen we het lekkere Vitamin Water proeven. Het water dat ik deze zomer in Californië vaak kocht. En ook Proxis kon het niet laten om ons te verwennen! Het laatste Dan Brown boek zat samen met nog wat boekjes mee in ieders zak!

En dan was er nog ik, die mijn boek voorstelde. Gewoon een boek, zoals ik blog, dus eigenlijk een blogboek en dat dankzij Ludion. Want zij hebben het mij uiteindelijk gevraagd. Vannacht of morgenvroeg komt er een wedstrijd op de BGGD website, waar ik 4 boeken mag weggeven. I have a lot of backsliding to do over my last blogpost.  Or call it “disclaiming,” or call it CYA, or call it apologizing.  Anyway, first and foremost, I must say that all my ranting about Men, Banks and Everything was not remotely directed towards my Significant Other.  Although, indirectly, it was sparked by things my two oldest sons have been saying to me lately…  And, more importantly, I was not yet finished with my rant….?!?!!!

So where was I?  Ah yes:  Out “at sea.”  Yep.  I never got back from there, in fact.  I’ve cooled my jets a bit since that last writing, though, and I’ve done less tweeting and FB checking these days.  Reminds me.  Brb.

Okay, I started this post FIVE DAYS AGO! Looks like I need to 1) write shorter posts; and/or 2) avoid FaceCrack.  *sigh*

Well, I do feel like I’ve gotten on slightly more solid ground in the meantime…  Two projects I’m working on are starting to get traction, and it’s also been good to have attended two Brussels Girl Geek Dinners in the past two weeks two, erm, too.  Besides meeting some nice people there personally, this has also vicariously/virtually opened me up to the work and passions of a whole new pool of Brussels/Belgian women who share my same interests — theoretically. 

“MmmROAR!”

From yesterday’s gathering, alone, I accidentally found out who the woman behind “girls against graffiti” — whose artwork I have admired for a long time — is ().  And, I got to meet, chat with and otherwise hob-nob with “like-minded souls,” as my other new BGGD pal (and, hopefully, future collaboratrice), @elise_huard, calls it.  I picnicked with the Ladies from Kipling.com, world-traveler Leen, and Inge from TenderFeelings.be.  And I later managed to drop a whole box-load of picnic trash right in front of an oncoming vehicle with @nuria_gc, after which we were  forced to hurriedly clean up all the mess (YES!) _with our bare hands_.  Now that is invigorating — and bonding (ahem)!!!  (Luckily, all the shutter-bugs had already left by that point, so I think they missed The Spectacle.  Whew.)

Otoh, I still am upset about the imbalance of female representation in the world’s power structures. In fact, I recently started thinking that “power” itself is not a good thing, so maybe we don’t even _want_ to belong in a “power” structure.  (And now, for the preachy part of the post…)

Negative

People say “power is neutral.”  But let’s think of electric power, for example.  Normally, we imagine “power” as something “positive”: Something we can use to do constructive things.  But then, in fact, we are actually talking about “energy” — or even “exigy,” the availability of energy — but maybe that is something else.  (In fact, Energy is Everything Else! ) Usually, we don’t believe there is such a thing as “negative” power — except over on The Dark Side… We think that, in physical or chemical or whatever terms you measure it, power is a positive thing — or, at least, a “neutral” thing.  Right?

Wrong.

The electrons from which we derive power/energy (don’t ask me how!) are, in fact, actually _negatively_ charged.  (And PROTONs are positively charged — especially when your parents first send you off to college and put all your spending money on that little golden chip!)  The fact that electrons are negative means that “power” is effectively “negative” at its source.  And, this, in turn, and makes what I’m about to say only even MORE true! (Not really. Just depends on how much BS you’re willing to tolerate here!!)

The “power” which people possess, and the hierarchies which result from that (e.g. “power structures”) are also negative, imho.  Why?  Because people amass power either because they have done bad things, or because they are willing to do bad things (and what’s the difference after all, anyway?).  Naturally, I can’t prove this, but, to illustrate, think about your own answers to the following questions.

1.  Was Gandhi a powerful person?

Good

No.  Gandhi was not a powerful person.  He was articulate, he was a good person, he had great sway, or influence over a lot of people.  But would we say he was “powerful”???  It seems almost “beneath” him, doesn’t it?

2.  Was Margaret Thatcher a powerful person?

Evil

We should give Maggie more credit because she was a woman, at least, but The Iron Lady had the reputation of being a real bitch — and not in the good sense.  Had she done bad things to get to her position?  Was she willing to do (more) bad things in her position?  Maybe. And what does that mean for other people (mostly men) in “Positions of Power”? George Bush? George W. Bush? (Yes, I’m old enough to remember his father!) Barack Obama…?

Well, the shadow of a doubt is definitely there.  So, does power actually have a “bent” in one direction or the other?  I am arguing it does.  And, likely, power is bad — or “negative,” at least…

Which is why my Soapbox for this post is Net Neutrality. (?!!!?)

An open, free, and universally accessible Internet creates _the_ opportunity for women to find a voice and gather “critical mass” behind objectives which we think are worthwhile.  The internet, like female social structures (not “power” structures), is flat.  It is pluralistic and, as long as it remains free and accessible, it is “democratic.”  This is just the environment in which women can be expected to excel — to gain recognition, authority, and yes, power.  *gulp*

So all the more reason for us to actively FIGHT to keep the male-dominated power structures which rule our society from taking over the internet as well!!!!!  Therefore, go sign up to get/keep your piece of the internet “PI” RIGHT NOW!  Now that the crisis is “over” and “normalcy” is restored — ahem — it will be very difficult for us to keep the internet free-from-male-domination.  For the moment, though, the odds appear to be in our favor…

Yesterday, on my freaky-deaky public-transport trip home from BGGD15, I read in a booklet from Sanoma Magazines Belgium, called “What do women do online?” — which (Clo Willaerts) had very generously given everyone — that 52.1% of American internet users are women.  In Belgium, that number is 47%. But did you hear that….WORLD??!? In a leading industrial country of the world, MORE WOMEN are online than MEN!!!!! (Would be great to know the statistics for the rest of the world. Anyone??!)

And what we women are doing online would be a great topic for a future post! For example, would you ever have imagined that 22% of Belgian woman are still online after midnight?  I am certainly in that crowd, but I didn’t realize I had so much company!  Hi, Ladies!!! *waving*  But one other striking thing, quoted from The Economist of March 2009, is that American females decide on 80% of important household purchases.  And there, like in Belgium, a significant amount of shopping, or simple price-comparison for future purchases, is done online.  So the conclusion is:  If a company wants to sell big-ticket consumer items, it should target advertising toward females and build up a respectable, female-friendly, online presence.  That would certainly also help to keep the male-female power balance — online and IRL — well, in balance. 

Never thought your VISA card was that powerful, did you?!? But, hell, Wilma and Betty had that figured out millenia ago!!!

Elke keer is een BGGD super! En elke keer wordt de vorige editie overtroffen!

Deze keer was het zonder “sjakosjen*” én in openlucht. Het weer zat alvast erg goed mee!

Zoals elke keer zijn we weer goed verwend! Zo waren er 5 uitverkorenen die een sjakosj van Kipling – van de !nieuwe! collectie – kregen, werden we verwend met lekkernijen als: Grand’O (een lekkere Grand Marnier cocktail), taart van Microsoft (voor de 10de verjaardag van Messenger), Chiquita Smoothie, (light)ijs van IJsboerke, … én een leuke babbel met de Girl Geeks!

Naar goede gewoonte stond er een goodiebag klaar met vele verrassingen!
Weer een zeer geslaagde editie! Thx @clo en @iedereen die er was! Het was weer zeer gezellig!

Uiteraard heb ik een paar foto’s genomen. Niet met een fototoestel, maar met de iPhone deze keer!

Ik kijk alvast uit naar de volgende BGGD!

At yesterday’s Girl Geek Dinner in Antwerp, organiser Clo managed to welcome Lynn Langit, a Developer Evangelist for Microsoft.

Lynn told about the Digigirlz programme, which introduces young girls between 12 and 17 years old to technology.

Why a Digigirlz initiative?

Girls still  represent a serious minority in IT business environments. Lynn says the latter is especially a problem in Europe and North America: “At conferences in the US, I meet female developers from India, Asia,… and they always ask me where ‘our’ IT women are. And it’s true: 97% of IT conference attendees in Europe or the United States are male. So if we don’t take action to do something about it, nobody will. And the situation will never change.”

What does Digigirlz do?

The programme organizes among others free workshops and camps, at which girls learn to make their own virtual games and worlds. According to Langit, the girls love it ánd they get the hang of it pretty quickly. Lynn herself is responsible for the South Californian Digigirlz programme.

Microsoft did a lot of research on what girls like and dislike when it comes to technology. According to Langit, girls love to create their own worlds and they hate the thought of sitting in front of a computer and type.  Knowing how to get girls involved in technology (and how not to) is one  of the reasons why the programme is so succesful, I presume.

Kodu

Langyt also presented Kodu:

“Kodu is a new visual programming language made specifically for creating games. It is designed to be accessible for children and enjoyable for anyone. The programming environment runs on the Xbox, allowing rapid design iteration using only a game controller for input.” Source: Kodu

According to Langyt, a lot of effort has been put into making the Kodu language and its possibilities attractive both for boys and girls.

I think it’s great Microsoft introduces the wonderful world of IT to children and girls. Because let’s face it: technology really is fun, right?

Lately, I’ve considered whether I should become a blond blogger. Well, not exactly. But it’s been interesting (and a bit sad, I must admit) to read about some of the most highprofiled girls lately.

Swedish blogger Blondinbella has more than 300 000 unique vistors a week. Isabella “Blondinbella” Löwengrip’s blog has more visitors than the Swedish online community, Lunarstorm. Impressive!

In Scandinavia, the young  (often blond) female bloggers are high up on the lists. They write about “their lives with clothes, in good times and bad times” as one of the bloggers said it (Ulrikke Lund). And they earn money on it. Much more than I can say! Blondinbella sells ads for between 300 000 – 400 000 Swedish kronor (27 000-37 000 euro) a month. According to Twingly, Blondinbella is the most popular blog in Sweden, Ida Wulff is the 5th most popular blog in Norway. Here are a few more, Linnea Myhre, Ulrikke Lund (just stopped blogging, couldn’t take it any more)

Norwegian magazine D2 had an interesting article about the phenomenon recently.

I’m amazed by these blogging gals and how they have found a commercial niche. But they are also balancing on sharp edge, by revealing hugh chunks of their private lives, a decision that seems to give them lots of traffic, but also some serious problems. I wrote about the confessional Gawker blogger Emily Gould a while ago.

As you understand, I  haven’t dyed my hair, but I do once in a while write about clothes (or rather antishopping – the experiment is over, I do shop again, so don’t blame the financial crisis on me). But instead of letting all the blonds have all the fun, I want to drag your attention to some lovely blogging brunettes (ok, I’ve also included some pretty blondes, but guaranteed not lightheaded, favorites) that are blogging about other things than clothes, such as technology, media and politics.

Facebook all the way vandaaag. Een reportage in VOLT rond Facebook waar onze lieftallige @bnox met de nodige mooie woordenschat, in Kobe zijn ogen kijkend, verleidelijke verhaaltjes vertelt. Wie zei daar nu weer dat internet niet sexy is!?

Alsof het nog niet genoeg is krijg ik op facebook zelf de hele tijd berichtjes rond het volgend filmpje. Het is wel mooi gedaan eigenlijk…

Great conference, lively, entertaining and informative – but why were all the speakers, except for one, male?

It’s a fair question and one I could not help voicing. So, when charismatic compere, Patrick de Laive, introduced the afternoon panel, I asked from the floor (front row): “More guys?”

And got me a spontaneous invite to join the boys on stage.

It was a blogging moment. Express yourself - you never know who is listening and where it will lead.

Je mag natuurlijk op BGGD#8 eens dicht tegen mij aan komen flemen om een kijkje te nemen in het origineel exemplaar!

Gisteren de 5de editie van de Brussels Girl Geek Dinner (BGGD5) bijgewoond. Girl Geek Dinners zijn bijeenkomsten van vrouwelijke geeks (geen nerds). De focus ligt op het technische, maar deze events zijn evenzeer bedoeld om gezellig te socializen. In België worden ze aangevoerd door Clo Willaerts.

De 5de editie vond plaats in de kantoren van Duval Guillaume. Als voorbeeldig stagiair (en ook uit interesse) besloot ik te helpen. Affichkes gemaakt voor de WiFi, voor spijs en drank gezorgd en tussendoor nog wat fotograaf gespeeld. Eén interessante en één mindere presentatie mogen aanschouwen, Sony’s Rolly aan het werk gezien, Lotus Speculoospasta geproefd (heerlijk), enkele interessante mensen gesproken en een lift naar huis gekregen van Netlash en Gudrun. Ook Greetd vergezelde ons in de wagen.

Alweer een nieuwe ervaring. Maar als ik nogmaals wil gaan, zal dat als sacoche moeten zijn.

Hmmm, much too long ago since I’ve written an entry. Which is my fault. Completely. And which makes me realise there’s quite a lot I haven’t been talking about on this blog.

So, back to the past.

1. Yesterday. Girl Geek Dinner number 5 already. I’m a geek not a freak. Out of the 5 Brussels Girl Geek Dinners, I have attended 4 till now. Luckily I missed out one, otherwise I couldn’t defend myself anymore when people call me a freak . Anyway, it was great to see some ’usuals’ back like Clo and Smetty ànd to meet new people like Pimpajoentje. Moreover, we got ‘speculoospasta‘ in the goodie bag. I’m staring at it right now with hungry eyes but I am patiently waiting for the right moment to try it out.

2. The 6th and 7th of May. A friend of mine organised quite an interesting event for people who are involved in arts and culture. During this so called ‘hybrid spaces’ event, the participants were challenged to think, talk and work around four thematic issues:

• local/global,
• private/public,
• narrative/creative
• visible/invisible.

Those ‘borders’ can be looked at in many ways since the coming of ‘new media’. More information on the Spacecowboys website.

3. Way back in time, at the 29th of March. Barcamp Ghent and Girl Geek Dinner number 4. Apart from meeting lots of interesting people in Ghent, I was very proud that I had been able to pursuade some colleagues at City Live to join me there. And very relieved that they enjoyed the event and came back with new contacts and great ideas as well . Furthermore, I discovered the wii. Which wasn’t only very funny, but which brought me into contact with two great people: Ywein and Filip. Ywein was my opponent, Filip the one taking pictures while we made a fool of ourselves .

After the Barcamp in Ghent, the fourth Girl Geek Dinner took place at the offices of Netlash. Not only again a nice place to meet interesting people (at or in between the cocktails and French fries I met Britt and also Bart), but also the place at which I won…YES, I won…a microsoft webcam. Thank you!

Allez, mijn allereerste Brussels Girl Geek Dinner begon gisteren al in mineur… Om 16u45 stapte ik op de trein in Brussels Airport, om 18u15 arriveerde ik in Brussel Noord.

Wat er onderweg is gebeurd? Véééél stil gestaan door één of andere brand in Brussel-Noord. Als je weet dat die rit amper 15 minuten duurt, snap je dat mijn humeur intussen al serieus minder was.

Vervolgens hadden Valérie en ik problemen met het vinden van de locatie. Of vind jij het normaal dat een straat aan de ene kant zus heet en aan de overkant zo? Only in Brussels

En net toen we besloten om ons verdriet te gaan ‘vervreten’ in de plaatselijke Quick of McDonald’s, hadden we het gevonden. Na wat -héél gênant- getuur door het raam, gingen we toch naar binnen.

Meteen al overspoeld door de sponsors. Hoofdsponsor was Duval Guillaume, een reclamebureau waar ik op het werk ook al mee te maken heb gekregen. De chaos die zich gisteren bij Brussels Airlines voltrok (de hele Justine Henin-affaire) werd zelfs vernoemd door één van de sprekers. Vooral de drie flashy Senseo-apparaten trokken mijn aandacht. Later bleek dat die ook te winnen waren! In het midden van de tafel stond een enorme toren met Lotus Speculaaspasta (of was het nu speculoos?). Haast nergens meer te vinden, je kan je dus inbeelden hoe graaiende girl geeks een potje probeerden te veroveren…

Onder de aanwezigen wel enkelen herkend (al hielpen de naamkaartjes ook veel), zoals (ex-baas) Clo, ex-klasgenoot Kathleen aka Kleintje, blogsters Lamazone, Imke Dielen, Tantieris, etc… Soms leek het wel op BV-spotten!

Maar dé ster van de avond was toch wel Rolly! Dit kleine muziekrobotje van Sony heeft ieders girl geek hartje gestolen. Die lichtjes, die move’kes! Of hoe een gadget ook écht schattig kan zijn…

Conclusie: ik was blij dat ik erbij was, al had ik misschien ietsje meer van de avond verwacht… Al ligt dat waarschijnlijk aan het lange wachten in de trein. Maar volgende keer ben ik er weer bij, dat is een feit!

Clo Willaerts zet daar niet langer een vraagteken bij maar een uitroepteken want voor haar is dit een feit. Zo liet ze deze morgen tenminste verstaan aan de telefoon bij Kathleen Cools op Radio 1 in De Ochtend toen ik met de krant naast mij mijn boterham aan het eten was. Volgens haar lopen kranten hopeloos achter op de feiten, want alles valt eerder al op een blog, of twitter of nieuwsforum in de loop van de vorige dag te lezen. Voor iemand die kampeert op het www is dit misschien zo maar niet iedereen zit heel de dag achter een computer en als dat dan nog zo is, kan niet iedereen onbeperkt rondsurfen. Mijn madam staat van ’s morgens tot ’s avonds met ruim 20 koters rond haar in de kleuterklas en wordt niet RSS gefeed , twittert alleen met de kleuters en kan alleen heel uitzonderlijk overdag eens naar de redactie.be of andere nieuwssite surfen. Precies alsof iemand die met enige delay het nieuws volgt, ongeïnformeerd is. Er zijn dus inderdaad nog kranten maar daarnaast zijn er nog the old fashion journaals op radio en tv en de printmedia.

Ikzelf ben news addict, en volg heel de dag door de actualiteit op de voet via tal van RSS-feeds op blogs en nieuwssites en toch kan en wil ik mijn krant niet missen. De krant maakt gewoon deel uit van het ochtendritueel. Ik begin met de eerste katern, specifiek eerste pagina + edito van de dag op pagina 2. Gewoon omdat ik elke morgen de eerste aan tafel zit en eerst weg moet. Tegen dat ik het eerste blad omsla, staat onze Vic mee te kijken over mijn schouder naar de ZAK van de dag. Intussen graait er een ander de Bis mee en verhuist Vic mee om ook daar de KIM van de dag mee te pikken. Elke morgen wordt de krant op die manier ontmanteld en als het ochtendhumeur niet te groot is en de klok niet te snel tikt, kan dat wel eens aanleiding voor een babbel zijn maar meestal blijft het stil… Als ik dan plots weg moet, probeer ik zoveel mogelijk stukken van de krant te recupereren om als treinlectuur heen en terug naar Gent te dienen.

Inderdaad, veel wat in de krant staat, verscheen eerder al op het internet maar daarom heb ik het nog niet altijd gelezen. Ondanks dat ik dus het nieuws op het internet volg, krijg ik mijn krant niet uit want niet alles is eerder al op het internet verschenen en overdag heb ook niet altijd tijd om alle feeds te lezen omdat ik met andere zaken bezig ben of moet ik zoals nu eigenlijk al op de trein zitten.

Clo slaat dus in enkele dagen tijd al voor de tweede maal de bal verkeerd. Zaterdag toen ze aan de zatte madammen een Bward uitreikte in plaats van aan jutblogt en deze morgen toen ze aan Kathleen Cools liet verstaan dat kranten niet meer van deze tijd zijn. Ondanks toch respect voor deze girl geek maar moet nu toch echt mijn trein halen om de rest van mijn krant te lezen.
