There may be many instances where we have to clone a object. For example, we open the object for edit in a form and after few modifications, if the user decides to abandon changes/cancel modifications and if we are using the main object to do all the changes, it would be a disaster.

Cloning is a way out of it. I remember a time when we had to write another clone method to achieve the cloning of object. With C#, its 2 lines of code!

Your class can be like this..

Now to make it clone-able change it this way…

А вот так можно сделать бэкап без нулей !

Aside from the 1965 Shelby Mustang GT350 and the very first 2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 ever made, Jay Leno has lots of toys that do things that you probably never even thought were possible.

What if I told you that I could clone almost any object under the size of about a yard? Better yet, what if I told you that I could, without any sort of assembly, make the cloned object fully functional as soon as I cloned it?

“Bust out the straight-jacket and lock him away?” you say?  Well, FYI, all of this is possible and is actually happening at Jay Leno’s garage. Jay has this nifty little scanner called a NextEngine 3D Scanner which will scan an object based on thousands of points and create a 3D model of it on your computer.

From there, the Dimension 3D Printer takes the image data given to it by the scan and processes a plastic version of the scanned object. As strips of plastic are being fed to the machine it produces a life-size replica of the object.

To add to this seemingly unreal and futuristic technology is the fact that it produces the replica in the same working order as the original. So lets say I have wrench that I wanted to remake. I would simply get the wrench, scan it in with the 3D scanner and send it in the printer to have a perfectly operational wrench – moving parts and all. I can scroll up/down on the wheel to make the clamp bigger/smaller.

This technology creates some pretty big opportunities for people who need a part for something that has become rare. Just make the plastic molding based on a similar part, try and see if the part fits/works properly then have a machinist make a metal molding/piece from the plastic mold you have. The potential is nearly limitless.

A federal judge rules in Apple’s favor in the Psystar copyright infringement case

Nearly a year and a half after a Miami company called Psystar announced that it was selling “Open Computers” pre-installed with Apple’s (AAPL) Mac OS X Leopard — and 17 months after Apple sued Psystar for copyright infringement — the case has come to its all-but-foregone conclusion: a federal judge in San Francisco ruled Friday in Apple’s favor.

“The material facts are not in dispute,” Apple wrote in its request for summary judgment. “Psystar deliberately copies and modifies Mac OS X without Apple’s permission and in violation of the laws protecting copyright.”

District Judge William Alsup agreed. At the end of a long preamble, he wrote:

“In sum, Psystar has violated Apple’s exclusive reproduction right, distribution right, and right to create derivative works. Accordingly, Apple’s motion for summary judgment on copyright infringement must be granted.” (PDF.)

And so it went for Apple’s secondary claims of contributory infringement and copyright misuse. Psystar’s motions, meanwhile, were all denied. A hearing to determine remedies is set for Dec. 14.

Apple has several other outstanding claims, including breach of contract, trademark infringement and unfair competition. They could still go to trial, if Psystar has the stomach — and the funds — to persevere.

USDA MEAT CLONING COMING SOON….EWWW

To the untrained eye, Pollard Farms looks much like any other cattle ranch. Similar looking cows are huddled in similar looking pens. But some of the cattle here don’t just resemble each other. They are literally identical — clear down to their genes.

Of the 400-some cattle in Barry Pollard’s herd of mostly Black Angus cattle there are 22 clones, genetic copies of some of the most productive livestock the world has ever known.

Pollard, a neurosurgeon and owner of Pollard Farms, says such breeding technology is at the forefront of a new era in animal agriculture. “We’re trying to stay on the very top of the heap of quality, genetically, with animals that will gain well and fatten well, produce well and reproduce well,” Pollard told a reporter during a recent visit to his farm.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2008 approved the sale of food from clones and their offspring, stating the products are indistinguishable from that of their non-clone counterparts. Japan, the European Union, and others have followed suit.

The moves have stirred controversy about whether tinkering with nature is safe, or even ethical, prompting major food companies to swear off food products from cloned animals. But consumers are likely already eating meat and drinking milk from the offspring of clones, which are technically not clones, without even knowing it.

Farmers can now use cloning and other assisted breeding technologies to breed cows that produce bigger, better steaks or massive amounts of milk, and animals that resist diseases or reproduce with clockwork precision. Premier genes can translate to improved feeding efficiency, meaning the ability to convert the least amount of feed into the most meat or milk, which results in a smaller environmental footprint.

“If you don’t need as much corn to feed your cattle, you might be able to cut back on the amount of fertilizer put out there on the countryside that might end up in a river. You can cut the amount of diesel that’s spent raising that corn,” Pollard said. “Just like they improve the genetics of corn, so they can produce more bushels per acre, we’re trying to do that same type of thing by using cloning and superior genetics to produce more meat with less input.”

Biotechnological advances in grain production will remain at the forefront of the global fight to alleviate hunger, although animal agriculture will likely contribute in the longer term.

“When people talk about feeding the world, reducing or eliminating hunger, I don’t think animal agriculture has much of a role to play. But, as people successfully move out of that extreme poverty, that’s when you get the growth in demand for animal protein and potentially cloning could have positive benefits,” said Robert Thomson, professor of agricultural policy at the University of Illinois.

Some animal breeds, ideally suited for arid climates, could be propagated to utilize grazing pastures unsuitable for crop production. Others may be bred to resist local maladies, like the Nguni cattle breed, which can develop resistance to ticks and immunity to tick-borne diseases.

Supporters say cloning will no doubt play a role in accelerating production, but the technology has been slow to take, primarily because of the high cost and resistance on ethical grounds. Of the more than 2.4 million Angus cattle that have been registered with the American Angus Association since 2001, only 56 were clones, according to Bryce Schumann, the group’s chief executive.

It costs at least $15,000 to clone a cow and $4,000 to clone a sow, although improving efficiencies will likely lower those costs in coming years, said Mark Walton, president of ViaGen, a company in Austin, Texas, that provides animal cloning and genomics services.

ViaGen owns the intellectual property rights to the technology that in 1996 produced Dolly the sheep, the world’s first animal cloned from an adult cell, at Scotland’s Roslin Institute. ViaGen, along with its partner company, Trans Ova Genetics of Sioux Center, Iowa, produces the vast majority of the clones in the United States. Other cloning companies are in Brazil, Argentina, Australia, and China.

Of the roughly 102 million cattle and 66 million hogs in the United States, “no more than a few thousand” are clones, according to Walton. Global numbers are around 6,000.

Esse projeto já foi bem mais elaborado que o outro e me tomou algumas trocentas horas a mais. Mas, no fim, acho que o resultado ficou bem legal.

Pitiello è triste e sconvolta il giorno dei funerali. La bomba al porto ha ucciso il Sindaco, il compianto pasticcere Sandro e i due malavitosi colombiani con cui erano in affari. La chiesa è piena di figure nere, tra loro anche l’investigatore Barbagli, chiamato dalla Grande Città per investigare sul caso. Da tempo le autorità erano a conoscenza dei traffici di droga nell’isola, ma chiudevano un occhio perché era l’unica attività che mandava avanti la fragile economia isolana. I vecchi e le comari si interrogano sul futuro, non facendo caso all’elogio funebre del parroco :
“Chi sarà il nuovo Sindaco?”
“E il matrimonio tra la figlia del Sindaco e il figlio di Sandro? Non si farà?”
“No che non si farà, lei era una clone! E il figlio e la moglie di Sandro se ne sono andati, distrutti dal dolore”
“Chi rivelerà la Pasticceria?”
Proprio in quel momento un forestiero entra nel locale che fu di Sandro, e si appresta ad iniziare la sua nuova vita.

An interesting article I found on Australian grape clone trials. For once, quality not quantity seems to be the main concern. Potentially raises ethical issues in terms of species modification, however an interesting read:

“Clonal trials” may sound like science fiction but in reality they’re a big part of Australia’s maturing fine wine story. An exciting one too! Winemakers and viticulturists embrace new grapevine options with the same anticipation as artists view an expanded colour palette.

Each clone has distinct traits – in much the same way as a cherry tomato is different from a roma or beefsteak – and the potential is enormous. As Kim Chalmers, Director of Chalmers Wines, says: “Because Australian vineyard sites have a wide range of regional variation in aspect, elevation, climate and soil conditions there are potentially a multitude of varieties or clones which could be perfectly matched to those sites to create unique and complex wines.”

It’s not a quick business (Australia’s strict quarantine rules mean it can take 10 years from sourcing new material to producing the first crop) and, in the past, limitations in clonal variation have frustrated those wanting to achieve the best results. But things have changed in recent years thanks to the commitment of a number of leading nurseries, and a new range of clones is bringing great results and a massive jump in quality.

Chalmers Nurseries imported 70 new Mediterranean varieties and clones in 1998 and over the next decade collected more than a million cuttings and propagated 700,000 grafted vines from them. “Our commitment to experimentation and innovation is central to the Australian wine industry being able to maintain and regain markets as well as forge new ones in the years to come,” Kim says.

Nick Dry, viticulturist with Yalumba Nursery, is just as enthusiastic, and believes the importation of the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir ‘Bernard’ clones from a program in Burgundy was a key to the development of these grape varieties in Australia.

“These clones were selected based on quality rather than yield and we are finding that their use has greatly enhanced wine quality and allowed our winemakers to more readily achieve the wine styles they aspire to create, both at the mainstream and fine wine levels,” Nick says.

“Since 2004 Yalumba Nursery has imported another 30 selections from Burgundy and we believe that each of these new clones has the potential to enhance wine quality, particularly with varieties where clonal diversity is currently limited such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Tempranillo and Pinot Gris.”
