Hundreds of teary-eyed drinkers stood shoulder to shoulder, apologetically squeezing past each other to get the bar whenever they needed a drink.

They had to be quick because there wasn’t much time before the beer, wine and spirits ran out – and come midnight the patron’s worse fears were realised as they were forced to guzzle pints of wine because everything else was gone.

The last night at the Pump and Tap was celebrated by people from far and wide, and from past and present.

The Mercury has followed the plight of the pub since the beginning, and it was my job to report on the very last evening and before DMU’s bulldozers moved in – and what better way to do so than involving myself in the festivities…

As I strolled through the pub, beer in hand, and collected the memories of the drinkers, I came across people who had travelled hundreds of miles to visit a pub they hadn’t seen for years.

I spoke to people who sipped their first legal, and possibly illegal, pint here. I spoke to people who witnessed grown men cry at the news that the pub was closing.

However, the most remarkable story was that of Iain Baughan, 58, from the West End, who claims to have been the first person to be served when the pub opened in 1988 – an anecdote confirmed by others. He got the pint on the house too.

The Pump and Tap seems to have had an uncanny ability to bring people together and it’s going to be a shame to write about it in the past tense from now on.

Many restaurants close due to progress. They’re forced to move or the location drives customers awa

Many restaurants close due to progress. They’re forced to move or the location drives customers away. Some might go out of business or get sold.

Although Tulsa has a wide variety of great restaurants, there are many that need to come back. Godfather’s Pizza, Eastside Café and Pennington’s are a few.

Some places we don’t miss. Royal Fork anyone? Others we do. Maybe you’ll have some fond memories of Tulsa’s Best Restaurants that are no Longer Here:

10. Bordens Cafeteria

I don’t remember if the food was good. What I remember is visiting my grandmother (dad’s side) who worked at the Sheridan Village location. I would ride the escalator up and down and pretend to be a Jetson. I loved their fish because it tasted like a Swanson TV Dinner, which menas the food was probably bad.

The restaurant closed in the 80s before I was born, so I’m not sure how I have these memories. I’m barely 21.

9. Winchell’s

Technically, not a restaurant, but they had the best sugar donuts in town. I’m not talking powdered sugar, I’m talking deep fried and covered in real sugar, or possibly cocaine. They’re still around in a few states, but not close enough to drive to.

8. Arthur Treacher’s

The best part about Arthur Treacher’s was that you didn’t have stomach cramps like you get from Long John Silvers.

7. Shoney’s

Overall, most of their food sucked, which contributed to their 2000 bankruptcy. They peaked at 1,000 restaurants in the 1990s, but currently only suck at about 300. The only reason to visit Shoney’s was for the breakfast buffet … and the occasional communicable disease.

6. Godfather’s Pizza

Hideaway, Mazzio’s and Joe Momma’s offer some of Tulsa’s finest pizza, but my all-time favorite: Godfather’s. From the crust to the cheese to the pizza sauce, Godfather’s baked pizza perfection. They’re still in Oklahoma, but the nearest one to Tulsa is nearly 40 miles away. It’s worth the trip.

5. Garfield’s

The food was palatable. I went for the drawing.

4. Eastside Cafe

Forget $5.01 combos meals or $5 Footlongs, for about the same price you could purchase a meal complete with one veggie, three sides, a drink and a roll. Eastside Café was located on the corner of Admiral and N. Florence Ave. Scary neighborhood today, but when it opened in the 1930s, it was in the upscale edge of town.

3. Ming Palace

Before Walmart bulldozed the Mayo Meadow Shopping Center at 21st and Yale, there was a small Chinese restaurant called Ming Palace that actually served a good buffet. The main waitress worked there for 30-40 years. She knew my name and drink.

The restaurant relocated to 73rd and Memorial in 2004. Soon after, it changed owners, changed recipes and is now as disgusting as all the other Chinese restaurants in Tulsa. Skip the current model.

2. Pennington’s

A classic 1950s drive up restaurant, located on Brookside. As a child, my grandmother (mom’s side) would take me to Pennington’s for a burger, fries (I think curly) and a Dr Pepper. We’d drive to Riverside, walk about one-third of the way down the pedestrian bridge and eat our lunch. Both the restaurant and my grandmother are gone.

1. Metro Diner

Decorated as a 1950s diner, this restaurant served some of Tulsa’s best burgers, steaks and chicken fingers. No meal was complete without an authentic 50s malt served in a soda glass. The Metro Diner was Tulsa’s Eskimo Joes, until The University of Tulsa bought the land, closed the restaurant and replaced it with a fountain that doesn’t contribute sales tax.

.

What did I miss? Let me know. I’ll it for a future post.

Google announced that closed captioning is coming to YouTube. Yeah, yeah, yeah, we know it was alrea

Google announced that closed captioning is coming to YouTube. Yeah, yeah, yeah, we know it was already there in many videos where the creators took the time to add the subtitles for the hearing- or speaker-impaired. But now, for selected participating partners (mainly universities), YouTube itself will be adding the captions.

The captions will be machine generated and automatically timed to match the video (and still be readable, I hope). Just like any dictation program, I suppose, they’ll listen to the audio from the clips and transcribe it. Now, normally, you know I’d be in there making fun of all the hilarious errors a machine makes when transcribing the participating partners’ clips (because, hey, even humans don’t always do a good job of captioning)—but as I write this, they’re actually not doing it yet. Sigh.

Google rightly points out that this will enhance search within YouTube. Previously, only the accompanying text of a video would be searchable; now the actual content of the video would be indexable as well.

Google has actually been indexing the content of selected videos’ audio for over a year through its GAudi project. However, even after the elections of last year, they continue to focus on political news only in that project.

Also, the new automatic caption timing feature will make it easier to manually caption videos, for nonparticipating partners. You know, the rest of us.

What do you think? Are you excited for captions on videos from partners like Duke (IN YOUR FACE, FRANK AND ANDY—welcome to basketball season!)?
