I was in Delhi for four days in 2010. When you are staying at someone’s house you gotta know the time to leave especially when that person is a friend, you know, to keep your friendship healthier and longer:) So, I set up a dedaline for four days and thought to get done with my shopping and creating some new clothes for myself within that time. It sounds  over-promising to design and make a saree just in four days? I did it. This is how-

Step 1.  Head to a store that sells dress materials by yard. I went to Gulati store in Kamla Nagar, New delhi. Bought white chiffon by yard. (Day 1)

Step 2. Pre-decide your colour combination that saves time, I had done my homework from London, so I chose this fuchsia pink and purple. (Day 1)

Step 3. Tie-dye it. (Day 1+ 2)

Step 4: Take it to your tailor or anyone who knows sewing or how to stitch. Get your falls and pico services done. (Day 3)

Step 5:  Choose your border. (Day 3)

3D Floral lace borders were en vogue at that time. I spent some time in finding the one that I like at the same time the one that goes with the colors I had chosen. If you are in Delhi, search every nook and corner in Chandni Chowk, plenty of varieties there, reasonably priced and available to serve everyone’s choice and need.

Step 6: Get it stitched to the edges of your saree. All sides.  (Day 3)

C’est tout! It is this simple! And all in 3 days.

Some days you just wear this saree the way it is! Simple and sexy! If you are going to a party or planning to make it a festival wear, then do the way I did here. I worn this on a Durga Puja function. Added my multi-layered pearl neckpiece as a waistband. I find ”normal” is boring. Remember my tag line- ”Everyone wears clothes, very few wear style”. I didn’t wear a simple matching blouse with this, rather wore a choli (a crop top) that I had picked up from a street (literally) market (Janpath) in Delhi. It has Gujrati Kutchi embroidery on the front. Gujrati Kutchi embroidery is very  vibrant and colourful. This crop top has a halter neck top with crushed cotton back. I detest matronly cut blouses;) This was ready made and it felt it is just custom-made for me and my taste:) I have them in other colors too, I wear it with long gypsy skirt, with divider pant and also with saree as you can see here:) Always wear your creative hat when planning and plotting a Look;)

Top tip: Wear a satin or silk petticoat with a chiffon saree. Same rules apply to any see through sarees namely; muslin, net, georgette etc. And if they have a lace border line the one I wore here, it is even better:)

So Ascot is here again and all its been lately with my friends is talking about dresses, hats and accessories for Royal Ascot, most of my friends are going tomorrow, they have opted for pale colours like cream and peach, big hats which i hate wearing I’d prefer to wear a fascinator myself, my friends absolutely buzz off it.

Everything leading up to ascot is BIG for us girls in racing getting dressed up the whole atmosphere there and the love of horses its just so glam!!
Its best to go for plain dresses I think personally because you can always go for a colourful hats and a bright handbag with pretty earrings, to belts and shoes, its all about the accessories that make a plain dress into the perfect Ascot outfit!!!

The focal point of this outfit is the fabulous Pour La Victoire shoes. To ensure that shoes get all the attention the remainder of my outfit is neutral, muted colours – my favourite pair of grey skinny jeans with a cream blouse.

I love the neck line of the blouse – it’s so original and flattering. And the buttons!! So badass!

Ideally, I’d prefer to wear the outfit as pictured above. For the office I pulled the pants up so that my shirt was tucked into them.

The drop crotch pants are light weight and perfect for the warmer months. They are from H&M’s Fashion Against AIDS line. The crop turtle neck is from American Apparel and can be paired with a wide variety of bottoms or underneath garments – I guess you can say it’s the ‘dickey’ of the 2000s (but way cooler!)

The pants are quite the statement pi loud so I’ve kept my shoes simple with nude peeptoes from Aldo.

I got this red apron when I was 7, as a souvenir from France. I was cleaning out a cupboard the other day and found it. I was about it let it go (lolol, no shit, Marie) and bring it to the Salvation Army. But you should have seen the SPARKLESSSSS in Polo’s eyes:

YESSSSSSSSS! A CAPE! I want to wear it and be a SUPERHERO!

So my baby spent the week going to preschool with that thing on. And a ”mask” made out of a pipe cleaner. Yup.

Summer is coming, the new Superman movie is out and my 3 year-old is in his ‘superhero’ phase. I think the planets (including Kripton) are aligned to show you the GAP Kids Summer Super Hero collection. It includes swimsuits, rash guards (a shirt made out of swimsuit material to protect from the sun), tanks, beach towels and t-shirts. All ranged between $23 and $40.

Do I LOVE it all? No I don’t LOVE it. I think it’s cute and I also like the vintage feel to it. I just don’t really dig kids’ t-shirts with prints/words/monsters/superheros/cars/Little Bears/Buzz Lightyear/Dora/princesses. However, toddlers usually freakin’ LOVE that shit. GAP’s tees are a cute compromise, perfect for hot summer days.

I hate this #sweater. I’ve worn it so many times this year and when I look at it i think it’s something a 12 year old would wear. It reminds me of sweating on the metro on the way to class in winter, thinking that this is not the weather I expected and why am I sweating if its cold?!? But why do we girls attach memories to clothes?? I remember buying this with Caroline at Bershka and saying, “Why didn’t I bring any winter clothes?”. I wore it to the DMV over winterbreak with 2 of my best friends, Sam and Justyna and the lady filing my paper work said “my, what a big heart you have”. It was probably the best time I will ever have at the DMV. We were laughing so much. I wore it when I made pierogis with my great grandma in Poland. I hate this sweater, but I love it at the same time because it reminds me of so much. Maybe it will bring happy memories to someone else. #donation #packingsucks #studyabroadproblems

Nigel could never have guessed that losing his balaclava that day would preclude a promising career opportunity as a left-wing revolutionary

“Never mind my dahling I won’t let that beastly Mr Hitler blow up your balaclava.”

The balaclava is one of the most schizoid items of clothing ever conceived.  If it were human it would be under a course of intensive therapy.  Originally named after the Crimean town of Balaklava it was cold weather comfort aid for British troops in the Crimean War – a fashion statement which undoubtedly looked good twinned with a (Lord) Cardigan.  Born out of homely practicality the balaclava’s bipolarity in its diverse cultural history is such that it is now perversely most closely associated with extremes – whereby its image summons up all manner of subhuman-human rights violations, death squads and terrorism.

It was all so innocent once…  The head case for Mummy’s boys in short trousers with bare knees shadowed blue by winter chills: adults in waiting in miniature belted-raincoats lining the flint-walled playgrounds of youth the length and breadth of the nation.  All jam sandwiches in brown – pre-Tupperware – paper bags and short back and sides.  Which was just as well because the hand-knitted coverall was scratchy to the scalp and the plastered hair beneath struck static electric sparks and crackle when removed on a frosty morning as the regulation third of a pint of school milk ration was consumed.

Little did they know that those annoying caps just like Daddy wears would be replaced with something far worse.

Education Secretary Michael Gove has one of those faces that you just know suffered the indignity of sporting a balaclava in his tender years – they were the perfect calling card of the school swot/geek.  The character of Roy Cropper in Coronation Street probably had one as a child too.

They were a staple of unlikely lads throughout the 50s and 60s.  The kitchen sink movies of the British Realist school were full of angry young men who probably owed much of this volcano of bile to parental insistence on wearing a balaclava.  It was a predominant winter feature until kids became too cool for school and rebelled fully at what Mum ordained.

What was it with bikers she thought?! They couldn’t sell anything without a girl in a bikini!  Luckily Lauren had always wanted to be in Balaclava Babes…

A timeless classic… What the well-dressed paramilitary is wearing – and it doesn’t cost a bomb.

A balaclava was a resident prop on gritty 60s documentaries of kids playing on leftover WW2 bomb sites.  Synonymous with play emulating adult wartime daring – “I’m a cockleshell hero and you’re dead!” – it morphed from a devious item of heroic ‘noble’ though covert intent – dressed down for a cause; through an SAS pedigree to perfect reflection of the dark arts of warfare.

There was always an element of up to no good – night time poachers and peeping toms – however, it was in the early-70s that the balaclava as fundamentally ‘useful’ clothing item getting in with a bad crowd evolved.  From popularly perceived, and inferred, as the choice of geeks and weirdoes previously it suddenly became a self-justifying cultural prophecy: the province of murderer Donald Neilson – dubbed the Black Panther – whose exploits did much to put the balaclava on tabloid front pages.

Sex, politics, anonymity, social revolution, pop – Pussy Riot putin all the connotations.

The cue simultaneously taken up by the likes of Black September and any other two bit terrorist organisation on ‘operations.’  Maybe the Mummy’s boys and weirdo psycho infants just grew up?   No consideration would be complete without the IRA - whose berets and balaclavas combo formed a chilling backdrop of paramilitary display to over two decades of marching and news bulletins.

Lines have become sufficiently blurred that the balaclava has become staple of ecological and recent austerity demonstrators: when the need to protest or hide your appearance comes along they are the perfect standby.  Bikers, outdoor workers and extreme sports fans have continued on their merry way in using variants on the theme but a lot of the practical necessities have been superceded by the ubiquitous hoody.

Leatherface was just never the same after they laughed at his balaclava at high school…

Cross fertilisation with the sexual has seen the balaclava contribute elements in a give and take relationship to the gimp mask.  A unisex item that conveys a no sex androgyny - it has been utilised on the catwalk to focus attention solely on the clothes and as blank canvas for alien faces in numerous Sci-fi presentations.  There is apparently nothing that makes a balaclava wearer blush – not that you’d notice in any case: it appears it will open a cultural conversation with anyone.  And from this it has been a short step to horror film serial killer motif par excellence.  The hills have eyes but then so do balaclavas – horrible, disturbing anonymous slitty rapist ones: the stuff of nightmares.  The boundaries of the imagination have been breached from Texas Chain Saw Massacre – where murderer Leatherface has a sort of homespun leather version – to the hockey goal mask style of the Friday the 13^th film franchise and on to the various comedy mask/balaclava mutations of numerous other genre examples.

The Bieber balaclava – the minds of pubescent girls the world over are suitably boggled.

Pop music has inevitably dipped its head into the flow – think Slipknot, Pussy Riot and even Justin Bieber.  Whichever way you wear it – it’s all a long way from the past and a grey winter’s morning getting ready for primary school…

THE ICONS
Where do I start. There were so many icons from the Sixties that made such a huge impact on our culture, which still influences fashion today.  My number one icon has to Bridget Bardot, those lips, those eyes, THE HAIR. She is probably one of the most beautiful women I’ve ever seen, with that platinum tousled blonde hair, smudged eyeliner, she was to die for (especially for the males). She was a triple threat; model, actress and dancer. She became famous for her role in the film God Created Women, which for its time was quite scandalous! She was partially responsible for the introduction and popularity of the bikini together with the cult film Beach Party.
Twiggy, my next icon, was the face of the Sixties. Famous for the huge fake eyelashes top AND bottom, a look which is being recreated today, big lashes being every women’s dream. Twiggy also altered the perception of women’s bodies. In the 50’s it was popular to be curvaceous. However Twiggy gave acceptability to the more boyish figure (hence the nickname Twiggy).
My last icon, Catherine Deneuve, again another beautiful women. She was a French actress linked with (the great) Yves Saint Laurent. She wore many of his designs in her films such as Belle De Jour, looking incredibly elegant and sophisticated. Later she became a model for his skincare range.

THE MUSIC
British bands ruled the world! My whole childhood consisted of listening to The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, four decades after releasing their first singles. I somehow find Mick Jagger (a granddad now) weirdly attractive, his charisma still survives the decades!

FASHION
Mary Quant was THE designer of the sixties, with revolutionary designs. She wanted to make fashionable clothes affordable to the young so she opened her own retail store called ‘Bazaar’. If it had not been for Mary Quant we would not have the hotpants or the miniskirt. She created the ‘London Look’ which consisted of knee high, white plastic boots and a tight rib sweaters. She also made plastic raincoat and pinafore dresses fashionable.

Most noticeable is the increased volume of the trousers – tailored but wide legged, formal in fabric and detail, yet totally casual in the way they sit above smart black shoes. Also adding to this are pyjama shirts with placket details and unstructured blazers. Added to this was another fine selection of outerwear in styles ranging from macs to anoraks and the ever classic Harrington.

The colour palette is, as you’d expect, grounded in navy blue and differing tones of grey. But added to this are brighter shades of blue and orange and a deep mustard yellow. So what you get is the same but different and that’s a good thing in my book. I went for this neon paisley print dress from topshop and powder blue blazer from river island .

As bright colours are all over the catwalks recently, I decided to give it a go, I think that the blue contrasts with the orange while complementing the colour in the paisley print!

I also used a cross body satchel type bag from primark

I think with colour, it’s such a good look because you can go for colour blocking, clashing, all in one colour wearing pieces of the same colour but different shades (which I LOVE) And have one popping colour piece paired with neutral or black and put with a matching bag!
