Hi there! As some of you might remember, this Tailor Made Dress was posted on our blog in September – Our Fall, Your Summer. I have received several messages from our Facebook Fan Page regarding the craftsmanship of tailor made cotton dress of a similar kind. So today let’s look at some shots of our tailoring details. Ok, I know I blogged about a soft North Face fleece already, but THIS ONE is seriously THE softest one ever!!!  I managed to get $30 off this, so I definitely bought it.  It is amazingly soft.  I keep making people touch the fleece to feel how soft it is!  A great pullover, it totally has kangaroo pockets for your hands.  Doesn’t shed (at least, not yet for me), and it looks like it’ll stay that way.

I need to be frank with you. I haven’t written in a while (and this will be a little embarrassing) because I’ve been having problems with my zippers. I love the zipper. It  is a great invention that has been around for over a hundred years, and rarely does a day go by that I don’t I zip my backpack, my jacket, my pants, multiple times each day. I am a parishioner in the church of the holy zipper. But I have to tell you, I have uttered some unchurchlike words, all on account of my zippers.

 Whose idea was it to switch from metal to plastic? This has set zippering back decades. I have yet to meet a plastic zipper that has outlasted the product that it is designed to zip. The little end piece falls off or the teeth get misaligned, and you can never get them perfectly in line again. If you are lucky, you will be able to zip in one direction for a while, but it’s terminal at that point. You can prolong the life of that zipper, but the day will come when the compassionate thing to do is to let it go. I can only imagine how many items have been prematurely discarded due to zipper infarction. Sure, one can opt for a zipper transplant, but then you need to see a specialist, and they don’t come inexpensively. There is no zipper insurance in the private sector, and certainly no public option for us little people.

 I am begging the zipper industry to return to the metal zipper. The fate of pants, jackets, and backpacks across the land is dependent upon it.

The clothing and textile industries have long been trying to solve the problem of ironing dress shirts, i.e. how to avoid it. The answer came in the form of resin finishes that were added to fabrics, which made them wrinkle-resistant. The first resin used to treat fabrics, during the 1920’s, was formaldehyde and it is still used today! Unfortunately, the molecular change that occurs from soaking the shirt in formaldehyde makes it more brittle (a wrinkle free shirt will last about 75% as long as an untreated shirt). However, a greater cause for concern is that formaldehyde is a carcinogen and  an allergen.

The latest generation of wrinkle-free fabric comes closer than ever to delivering no-iron shirts. Unlike previous versions, the use of linings affixed along the seams keeps pockets and plackets (both sleeve and front) from puckering, but adds a noticable amount of stiffness throughout the shirt. Also, there have been advances in the resin coating.  The new technology permanently attaches small particles to the cloth fibres. The particles are absorbed into the cotton and coat every thread, producing microscopic hair-like extensions that form an air cushion over the cloth, repelling water and smoothing out wrinkles. The technology is young and has progressed so quickly that health and environmental effects are still undetermined.

We remain big fans of the iron and pressed shirts, which reflect our philosophy about how we design and sew our garments: it takes a bit more effort to do it right, but the results are more than worth it.

Big check plaids are where it’s at this season.  One’s that are lined and can be worn as a stand alone or over top a sweater for the later months are even better.  Shout outs to the Sherpa lined flannel from HUF.  HUF, or the man behind it, pro-skateboarder Keith Hufnagel has been killing it for a minute now with recent footwear collabs with Reebok, Nike, Van’s and Converse (yes, in that order) and, Keith was just interviewed by ESPN.  While every single piece HUF releases sometimes eludes us, the stand alone pieces, like this one, are the business and as good for Canadian winters as they are out in CA.  Available here.

So colorful! So geometric! So…hotel carpet-like! To this day, when I see a “certain type” of sweater, I think to myself, “Nice Cosby sweater!” Though these sweaters were a fashion trend not long for this world, they do still exist, most often in the bargain corners of thrift shops and hanging “ironically” in hipsters’ closets. Certainly, there are many moments to remember from The Cosby Show, but the Cosby Sweater may just always be the thing to leap to mind first.

For me, the upcoming holidays come with a mix of both excitement and anxiety. Like most college students, I’m poor broke, and since I come from a ridiculously large family, I have an overwhelming number of gifts to give. This Christmas, I am seeing just how frugally (yet fabulously) I can hand-make my gifts, and I have decided to go to Etsy to help me get there. After a little investigation, I figured out how super easy it is to save money by carefully exploring Etsy’s three main sections: handmade, vintage, and supplies.

J.Crew has a collection of jewelry this winter that is beyond fabulous, but the price of these items is also beyond ridiculous. Take this twisted pearl necklace, for example. It’s beautiful, but is it beautiful to the tune of $98.00? Not in this economy. By searching in the supplies section of Etsy, you can find the materials to make this yourself. I headed over to YadanaBeads, which is Etsy’s number one seller site-wide, and quickly found these pearls and this funky clasp, all for just $15.70, including shipping. From my experience, that’s even cheaper than you can find at your local bead shop.

Let’s say jewelry making isn’t your thing? Maybe you’re the knitting-type instead. Etsy shop Squoosh has this gorgeous yarn that, at $23.00, would make a fabulous scarf, and far cheaper than an alternative from Nordstrom or Anthropologie.

Or maybe you’re not so comfortable with the make-it-yourself part and would rather buy a ready-made item. Etsy has plenty of those too. Jewelry sellers on Etsy are a dime a dozen, but upon careful searching, you can find pieces that are truly one-of-a-kind standouts. This necklace, for example, at $25.00, is way more affordable than it’s designer-made counterpart. Or maybe a set of these adorable calling cards, which could be perfect for the PR professional-in-training on your list this year. They come 40 cards for only $22.00, and arguably are far cuter than anything you could find elsewhere.

Etsy’s vintage section is a little more tricky, especially if you’re looking for clothing, but it’s also a great place to find the thoughtful and fun gifts that no one expects to receive. My politics-and-history-junkie best friend is sure to receive this presidential plate from me this year, especially considering the listed price of only $10.00.

If you’re running out of great ideas for the people you have to buy for this year, Etsy employs several social media tools to get you inspired. Their gift guides, many of which are compilations of Twitter hashtag entries, are broken up into a million categories from “under $50” to “for the gardener.” With that kind of specification, it’s hard to go wrong. Let’s say you need a gift for your Aunt Mary who needs artwork to adorn the walls of her new lavender-colored living room. Head over to the “colors” section of Etsy and within two minutes of searching, you’ll come upon this $25 dollar watercolor print. You can also “shop local” and support your town’s local artists (and save shipping costs), or head over to the Treasury section to see what other Etsy users have chosen to display.

An important thing to remember while using Etsy is to shop with caution. Do your research before contacting a seller to ensure that you don’t get hosed. Nothing says “bah humbug” like when it’s Christmas and your gifts don’t arrive on time because you didn’t check out a sellers’ Feedback section. Read over other user experiences carefully before buying. Usually the sellers are great, but you can never be too careful when you’re buying products you’ve never seen before from a person you’ve never known before.

There’s no reason to spend all of your holiday paychecks on gift giving this year– with a little creativity and thought, you can give everyone on your list a handmade gift, all while supporting struggling artists around the world!
