LaCie a leading storage media provider, has unveiled its data storage solution CloudBox, which is all-new network storage solution offered exclusively for home users. LaCie CloudBox when connected to the local router via a Gigabit EthernetPort will offer to its users the privilege to access the content from any location and on any computing device like a tablet, laptop or a smart phone. It also offers UPnP support so that the users can streamline their video content to Xbox 360, a smart TV, a computer or a smart phone.,

“Mom can share her photo albums with her family members who are out of the town, with the help of a secure download link,” said LaCie’s spokesperson. The company statement also assured that the content hosted on the CloudBox will be 100% secure and will have no size limitations. The files will be under the control of the administrator or the users, who are privileged to have it. CloudBox also has the ability to keep the private files away from regular access of folders and this is said to keep the vital data out of prying eyes.

CloudBox specifications include a 1GHZ processor and a 256MB RAM. It can stream data with 60 MB/Sec and can also afford 10 users offering them with necessary passwords and private folders. In case the user needs to have backup software for the MAC and PC, it is also offered in the features of CloudBox. So, the user need not worry much about the safety about his/her personal files and their security and so data continuity is possible in case he/she faces a laptop, phone or a tablet crash or loss.

LaCie CloudBox offers two ways to store data and it is in the form of family files and private files. The family folder will allow the users to share their memorabilia like photos, videos, music and other content and also files related to their team, if they are working in collaboration with colleagues. LaCie CloudBox offers private folders feature where the sensitive private data can be secured in folders which can be accessed only by permitted users. So, LaCie CloudBox is similar to Cloud storage but presently offers the services only to home users.

“The CloudBox is an apt service for families who are residing far away from each other due to their personnel issues. So, in order to stay connected with their family’s memorabilia, they just have to have access to CloudBox and can get it instantly.

LaCie CloudBox is available in 1TB, 2TB and 3TB storage capacities and is available on LaCie online store and LaCie resellers. What is OpenEMM?

OpenEMM is a feature-rich web-based enterprise application for email marketing, newsletters and service mails (transaction mails and event or time triggered mails). OpenEMM offers a great user interface, sophisticated bounce management, link tracking, lots of graphical realtime statistics, a CMS module and a scripting feature to implement individual tasks.

OpenEMM is the first open source application for e-mail marketing. Its code base has been developed since 1999 and is used – as part of the commercial software product E-Marketing Manager (EMM) – by companies like IBM, Daimler, Siemens and Deutsche Telekom.

OpenEMM offers already more than 95% of the functionality of most commercial products and some features most commercial products do not offer right now (for example MySQL support and CMS functionality).

The main difference to its commercial brother is, that OpenEMM is an easy to set up single server solution, while EMM operates distributed on several servers as software on demand (SaaS).

Install and Administration steps

Step 1) Update the operating system to its latest release. This will keep your system at the most stable state and harding it against various intrusion attempts.

- yum update

Step 2) Install additional packages for compatibility with OpenEMM’s sub-programs bav, bavwrap, smctrl, updater and xmlback (all written in C):

- yum install ld-linux.so.2 sqlite libxml2.i386 (make sure that line exclude=*.i386 *.i486 *.i586 *.i686 in file /etc/yum.conf is uncommented)!

Step 3) Install the required packages. Further depencies will be resolved automatically by the installation programm.

- yum install mysql-server sendmail-cf MySQL-python libxml2

Step 4) Create User ‘openemm

Create a special group and user for OpenEMM:

- groupadd openemm

- useradd -m -g openemm -d /home/openemm -c “OpenEMM-2011″ openemm

Step 5) Installation: Sun Java JDK

- Download jdk-6u33-linux-x64.bin from Oracle

- Create a directory for software required by OpenEMM: mkdir -p /opt/openemm

- Copy the file to the new directory: cp jdk-6u33-linux-x64.bin /opt/openemm

- Change to this directory: cd /opt/openemm

- Grant the file execution permission: chmod u+x jdk-6u33-linux-x64.bin

- Execute the Java file: ./jdk-6u33-linux-x64.bin

- Create a symbolic link java for the JDK directory: ln -s jdk1.6.0_33/ java

- Test the JDK:

You should get an output like this:

java version “1.6.0_33″
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_33-b04)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.8-b03, mixed mode)

NOTE: If you want to use an installed JDK, simple edit /home/openemm/bin/openemm.sh after the installation of the OpenEMM tarball and adjust parameter JAVA_HOME accordingly. Note: Only Java 6 is supported by OpenEMM since SUN does no longer support Java 5 with free bug fixes and security fixes.

Step 6) Installation: Tomcat

Since OpenEMM is a web application using Java, it requires a web container like Tomcat. (Please note that while OpenEMM 5.x and 6.x required web container Resin, OpenEMM 2011 was only tested with Tomcat.)

Download the latest binary distribution of release 6 from http://tomcat.apache.org. The core package will be sufficient.

- Go to /tmp directory: cd /tmp

-Download apache-tomcat: wget http://apache.mirror.versatel.nl/tomcat/tomcat-6/v6.0.35/bin/apache-tomcat-6.0.35.tar.gz

- Create a directory for software required by OpenEMM:mkdir -p /opt/openemm

- Copy the file to the new directory: cp apache-tomcat-6.0.35.tar.gz /opt//openemm/

- Change to this directory: cd /opt/openemm

- unpack the Tomcat file: tar -xvzf apache-tomcat-6.0.35.tar.gz

- Create a symbolic link tomcat for the new directory: ln -s apache-tomcat-6.0.35 tomcat

- Remove downloaded files: rm apache-tomcat-6.0.35.tar.gz

- rm jdk-6u33-linux-x64.bin

If you want to make sure that Tomcat works, enter the following commands (and make sure to stop an existing installation of OpenEMM first):

- Set environment variable JAVA_HOME:

- Change into Tomcat directory:cd tomcat

- Start Tomcat: bin/startup.sh

- Check for Tomcat installation screen: http://yourserverip:8080

- Stop Tomcat: bin/shutdown.sh

Step 7) Configure Tomcat to Run as a Service

We will now see how to run Tomcat as a service and create a simple Start/Stop/Restart script, as well as to start Tomcat at boot.

Change to the /etc/init.d directory and create a script called ‘tomcat’ as shown below.

- Change into init.d directory: cd /etc/init.d

-Create new tomcat file: vi tomcat

-copy this without line number:

- Save the file: “:wq”

- Now, set the permissions for your script to make it executable: chmod 755 tomcat

- We now use the chkconfig utility to have Tomcat start at boot time. In my script above, I am using chkconfig: 234 20 80. 2345 are the run levels and 20 and 80 are the stop and start priorities respectively. You can adjust as needed.

- chkconfig –add tomcat

- chkconfig –level 234 tomcat on

Verify it: chkconfig –list tomcat

tomcat 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:off 6:off

Now, let’s test our script.

-Start Tomcat: service tomcat start

- Stop tomcat: service tomcat stop

- restarting tomcat: service tomcat restart

- Check If tomcat is working: http://yourserverip:8080

Step 8) Enable OpenEMM Access in iptables Firewall

Edit the file /etc/sysconfig/iptables to open ports 25 (SMTP), 8080 (OpenEMM console and redirection) and 8044 (OpenEMM update service).

Add the following lines in section -A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT:

-A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -m state –state NEW -m tcp -p tcp –dport 25 -j ACCEPT
-A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -m state –state NEW -m tcp -p tcp –dport 8044 -j ACCEPT

-A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -m state –state NEW -m tcp -p tcp –dport 8080 -j ACCEPT

If you plan to use the internal SMTP server of OpenEMM instead of Sendmail (see chapter 7) you have to add this line to open port 8025 (OpenEMM SMTP server):
-A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -m state –state NEW -m tcp -p tcp –dport 8025 -j ACCEPT
Additionally, you have to enable a prerouting forwarding rule from port 25 to 8025. This is done by adding the following code after the comments at the top in file /etc/sysconfig/iptables:

*nat
REROUTING ACCEPT [0:0]
OSTROUTING ACCEPT [0:0]
:OUTPUT ACCEPT [0:0]
-A PREROUTING -i eth+ -p tcp –dport 25 -j REDIRECT –to-port 8025 COMMIT

Commiting all these changes requires a restart of iptables, which is done by

/etc/init.d/iptables restart

Step 9) Installation of OpenEMM 2011

Get the latest version of the OpenEMM binary code from

http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/openemm/files

Copy the tarball to a temporary location – /tmp is a good choice. Change to the home directory and run the following commands to create a version specific directory for the new OpenEMM version and to create a symbolic link from openemm to that directory:
cd /home

mv openemm openemm-2011
ln -s openemm-2011 openemm
Change to OpenEMM’s directory and unpack the OpenEMM tarball. Do not forget option “p” for the tar command, because some files need to have owner and group root or special permissions which are preset in the tarball!
cd /home/openemm
tar xzvpf /tmp/OpenEMM-2011-bin.tar.gz
Finally, move the documentation folder to /usr/share/doc where doc files are usually located on a Linux system:
mkdir -p /usr/share/doc/OpenEMM-2011
mv USR_SHARE/* /usr/share/doc/OpenEMM-2011
rm -r USR_SHARE
If you decide to install OpenEMM in a other directory than /home/openemm please make sure that your home directory contains a symbolic link to that directory and grant the required file access permissions with
chown -R openemm:openemm <path to OpenEMM install directory>

Step 10) Read Access to Maillog

OpenEMM requires read access to log file /var/log/maillog.

open file /etc/logrotate.d/syslog and add the following line after the line sharedscripts:

create 0604

Also run

chmod 604 /var/log/maillog

to set the permissions of the current maillog.

Step 11) Initialize/Update the OpenEMM and the OpenEMM CMS Database

- /etc/init.d/mysqld restart

Qualche giorno fa vi avevo parlato di una interessante distribuzione che prelude a un nuovo modo di intendere il sistema operativo e quindi il personal computer stesso; oggi vi presento la prima interpretazione commerciale basata su questa distribuzione: CloudBook.

CloudBook è uno dei tanti nuovi sub-notebook che stanno spuntando sul mercato consumer dei notebook, si tratta di un notebook dalle ridotte dimensioni e che cerca di contenere costi, peso, consumi.

Questa versione di sub-notebook della Everex è il primo portatile che prevede l’installazione nativa di gOS e quindi dichiara la vocazione di questo prodotto all’uso come “personal-internet-box”.

Le prestazioni di questo strumento non sono di certo adatte all’uso di applicativi per video o image editing, gaming o programming; il target di questo prodotto è l’utente che necessita di un pc per essere sempre in contatto con l’ufficio, poter accedere alla posta o ai files più importanti, scrivere testi, chattare, gestire il proprio blog anche in viaggio.

Le specifiche evidenziano questa vocazione:

Interessante è la durata dichiarata della batteria di ben 5 ore, ma ovviamente sono misurazioni da prendere con le pinze, non sapendo in che condizioni siano stati eseguiti i test; probabile che con un’uso intenso si arrivi a 3.30/4 ore, un ottimo risultato comunque.

Il piccolo contendente del mercato emergente dei sub-notebook è già in prevendita in alcuni store americani alla modica cifra di 399$, sicuramente un prezzo superiore a quello dell’eeePC di Asus ma con componenti diversi che potrebbero far propendere per l’uno o per l’altro in base alle esigenze.

Di discreto interesse è sicuramente la novità che questi portano con sè: vengono quasi esclusivamente promossi ed equipaggiati con distribuzioni linux.

Forse solo un tentativo di contenere i costi, forse anche chi produce computer si sta rendendo conto che non è poi così brutto utilizzare un os open-source per il propri prodotti, forse linux si sta guadagnando fette di mercato grazie a un profondo lavoro di semplificazione di utilizzo.

Sicuramente sarebbe quasi impensabile usare un sitema operativo come Windows su una macchina di questo tipo; linux ha sicuramente il vantaggio di essere adattabile a quasi ogni tipo di configurazione hardware, di avere un consumo medio di risorse esiguo e vantare un supporto praticamente illimitato.

Guardo con molto interesse a questa fork del mondo dei pc, confesso di essere molto curioso di vederne il primi esemplari in commercio e magari poterci mettere le mani.
