Further proof that the Seattle coffee scene is getting as stale as pre-ground coffee, I had to trave

Further proof that the Seattle coffee scene is getting as stale as pre-ground coffee, I had to travel to Vancouver to find siphon brewed coffee. Granted I was planning on going for the best Thai food in North America, and given all my past encounters with 49th Parallel Coffee detailed on this blog, I was also considering it a pilgrimage to a coffee mecca.

49th Parallel Coffee roasters recently opened their own coffeehouse on 4th Ave. in the heart of the Kitsilano neighborhood (or kits neighbourhood if you are trying not to look like a tourist). You would think that talents that make you a great coffee roaster wouldn’t translate to running a coffeehouse, kind of like Wayne Gretzky was one of the best hockey players but worst coaches – it’s just a different skill set. However 49th Parallel brings the same dedication to preparing coffee that they have in selecting and roasting some of the best coffees in the world.

Like all great coffeehouses, 49th Parallel makes each cup individually. Since anyone can make an espresso drink, get a cup of real coffee brewed on a clover, or opt as I did for a cup brewed on the siphon. Because 49th parallel gets quite crowded in the morning, they will only make siphon coffee after 10am. However when I walked in at 9am on a Sunday morning and politely asked with a big smile, they made an exception. More than likely they caved because of the rare lull of Vancouver couples in North Face fleeces behind me.

The siphon operates on the principle of a vacuum. In Europe and Japan, vacuum brewing never really fell from popularity, unlike in the states where cheap coffee machines, and worst of all, instant coffee, became the norm. The clover is a clever way of combining french press and vacuum brewing, however most of that brewing magic is concealed inside the machine. And thanks to the green monster, just like lions born in captivity will never know the jungle, new clovers will never see real coffee.

The siphon is like a symphony - the halogen lamp heats up, which forces the water into the upper chamber with the coffee. Then it is carefully stirred, the barista can’t hit the edges while creating a whirlpool, and after the lower chamber cools the coffee goes back down. Was the siphon the best cup of coffee I’ve ever had? No, but it certainly was up there. Also I got the added joy of scaring the UBC professors sitting next to me when I brought a beaker of coffee back to my table.

I think it’s funny that the only two times I’ve had siphon coffee have been in Canada, at Café Myriadé in Montréal and here at 49th Parallel. The only place I know of in the states with a halogen siphon is the Blue Bottle Café in San Francisco, where coffee is enjoyed as a fashion accessory rather than a drink. For a long time I’ve been working on a theory that Canadians are smarter than us. Look at the facts – they have different colored money, their economy isn’t in a recession, and they are on the metric system. They have been producing better coffee as well, quietly and without much fanfare, as is the Canadian way.

I first heard the song “Hey” from Clover on the Broken Nightlights compilation. It was instantly, and repeatedly, one of the highlights. The vocals of Charlotte Savory are beautiful.

I recently learned that she is a vocalist featured in Wax Tailor’s works, most recently on his just released In The Mood For Life.

With some help (thanks John!) a copy was located so here it is. I haven’t fully digested it yet so the jury’s still out but it’s something new for my ears and that’s a good thing.

Intelli InSeason Ethiopia Yirg on Clover. One of the most subtle Yirgs I have tasted. Disappointing actually. So, I follow this with Java Blend Costa Rica Don Mayo on Emily’s recommendation. Not as exciting as the description posted. Anyways, that’s enough caffeine for now. And suddenly at 8.30pm I just hit a wall and fall asleep, despite the amount of coffee consumed today!

I would like to take these two coffees and try in siphon vs. Abid (or chemex) vs. presspot vs. Clover for comparison.

Well I began running as a way to excercise my dog and also to get fit. This was a great idea but let

Well I began running as a way to excercise my dog and also to get fit. This was a great idea but let me tell you a little about my dog.

A quick lesson on the Parson’s Jack Russel terriers, who were bred to hunt fox. Their legs are longer than a Jack Russel Terrier to enable them to keep up with the horses and the hounds that chased the fox. When the fox went into it’s burrow the Parsons would dig it out and that would be the end of the fox. The dogs are equipped with unimaginable amounts of energy and will kill themselves running before they stop or tire.

Now, my dog Clover (12lbs) is very obedient and is a wonderful, happy companion in the house or when no one is around. But, as soon as I put the chest harness and leash on her she becomes something much different. Her insticts to be the lead dog and the hunter are brought out and she pulls me very hard. This is a constant annoyance because she not only makes my arm and shoulder tired but has begun to hurt my knee. When I run without her my knee feels fine but when she is pulling me I twist my knee ever so slightly which causes me a little nagging pain. I hate this because I really enjoy running with her and it shatters her world when I put on my Vibrams and head out the door without her.

So to alleviate this problem of her pulling on the leash I recently bought a controlease head collar that is supposed to fix the problem without causing her any pain. The head collar works like a horse bit in that when it is pulled it makes the head turn in the direcion of pull. Thereby stopping the dog from doing what you don’t want it to do. This is a novel idea but I fastforwarded the training that you are supposed to do before you start running with it on your dog and Clover quickly figured out how to stop letting the head collar pull her around and started to pull on the leash again.

So I am back to the chest harness and she is back to pulling me and my knee is back to aching. I think I can train her to do loose leash running but it will take some time.

Clover is still my running partner in the morning and gets plenty of exercise throughout the day by chasing squirrels and whatever else comes into our yard.

I’m getting pretty excited. I’m gonna take my mom with me and before the movie I’m going to force her to eat sushi. We’ll see how it goes.
This is going to be a great weekend!! I got my essay back. It was just some tiny errors that I need to fix. But overall it was pretty good. Yay!

Got Clover omnibus edition, Hot Gimmick (big edition with the 3 first books in it), Socrates in Love (I’ve been wanting to read this book for so long), Long Vacation and Konkatsu.

I’ve started to watch Konkatsu. I think I’m on episode 8 or something. Pretty good so far. Also started to read Clover, I’ve read half. I don’t really have and opinion on it yet. I think the story needs to sink in. ^^

The bees feed off the flowers of fully grown clover. You can see them flying from the beehive to the clover. Once a plot of clover has been visited and used by the bees, it will say “pollinated” when you hover over the plot. The clover will also have changed slightly in color. You shouldn’t harvest the clover until it has been pollinated if you wish to produce honey.

As with any produce (eggs, wool, cheese, etc.), the bees produce a maximum of 3 jars of honey until you move the honey into your barn.

I like it. It is comfortable and looks good in my living room with the new paint scheme. (Photo pilfered from the store’s web page.) When they delivered it on Thursday, I had the dogs upstairs to keep them out of the way. The delivery guys were here for all total 15 minutes, and when they left, I let the dogs back downstairs. Cosmo wanted “out” so he could kill the dead shrubs just a little bit more. When he came back in, he drank half a bowl of water in his usual sloppy way. Slurp, slurp, drip, slobber. I went into the living room and watched in disbelief as Cosmo, all sloppy and wet faced, walked over and rubbed his face down the front of the couch.

I love my dogs, I love my dogs, I love my dogs …

Last night, Clover whinged as she got up off the floor. When I called her over to me, I gave her a good rub down/massage to see if I could tell what was bothering her. She seems to be favoring her left shoulder, and for the life of me I can’t imagine why. Did she fall down the stairs when I wasn’t looking? or maybe Cosmo body slammed her just a little bit too hard when they were playing? Whatever the cause, she is sore and miserable, and very very needy at the moment.

I spoke to the vet on the phone, who reminded me that she’s 8 years old and she might have a touch of arthritis. All of a sudden, just like that? At the vet’s direction, I gave Clover 325 mg of buffered aspirin. Hopefully, this will take the edge off for her, because as it is right now, she won’t go up or down the stairs and is sound asleep on the floor in the TV room upstairs. If she thinks I am going to carry her down the stairs … she’s got another think coming! The vet said she would call me tomorrow to check on Clover, and if she’s not better, then I’ll be bringing her in for a visit on Monday. Crap. Why do I see my big screen HD tv flying out the window, and in its place a well vetted Labrador Retriever with MRIs and x-rays in its stead? Crap.

I was up and out of the house by 8:00 am this morning. I got all of my Thanksgiving food shopping done, and was home by 11:00 am. I love Wegmans! They have a great de-boned honey brined turkey breast that is wonderful, so in the basket it went with a bunch of vegetables and other necessities. It wasn’t until I got home and put everything away that I realized that Thanksgiving is the week AFTER next, not this coming Thursday. Crap. The turkey breast will be ok in the freezer for a few days, but I guess I will have to eat the pumpkin pie right away. I’m SURE it won’t stay fresh until Thanksgiving.

I see the neurologist again on the 23rd of November. I’m not wobbling as much as I was, but I can’t seem to rid myself of some other symptoms. The latest? My tongue feels numb around the edges, I have the shakes and tremors from time-to-time, and the vertigo is back. I’m pretty sure I’ll be seeing Boris again before Christmas! Check in with me next week, I’ll undoubtedly have something new to report, because as you know, You Just Can’t Make This Crap Up!

Oh, yeah, almost forgot. Its still raining.

Remember the joy when you received your 1st set of keys to the house as you turn of age? Or the excitement on the vast possibilities and future jubilation when you turn the keys to your new home? Or sweet nostalgia as you handled the keys to a very special box where memories and precious things are kept? Keys mean so much…a place of security, a home you call your own, or something you want to keep secret and only you would know and understand what the contents mean to you.

These skeleton key necklaces are a continuation of my obsession with them – their simple beauty, or for some, their extremely intricate details. Popular in the late 1800s, these keys conjure images of vintage furniture, classical homes, Gothic churches and antiqued chests. The possibilities of imagination are endless when the old (the key necklaces) and the new (your outfit) co-exist in fashion and style.

CLAMP – Dark Horse – 2009 – 4 volumes the Dark Horse edition is an omnibus contain

CLAMP – Dark Horse – 2009 – 4 volumes
the Dark Horse edition is an omnibus containing all four volumes.

So, the thing about Clover is that I read it when it first came out in English and more or less hated it. But it is pretty. I have the original four English volumes from Tokyopop and the recent two-volume Japanese rerelease of the series, and couldn’t pass up this pretty omnibus. Once I had it, though, I had absolutely no desire to read it. The omnibus was a good chance to give it another try, though. I didn’t read the Japanese edition after I bought it, and I hadn’t read the English volumes in six or seven years.

The thing about Clover… it’s super-pretty, and has amazing composition and minimalist art. But it’s a series that hinges on song lyrics, which is a bad idea in the first place since you have no idea what the tunes to the ever-present songs are. Most manga series about singers feature a song every volume or two that takes up a page, which is fine. You can read the lyrics and try to imagine the tune, but you only have to do so for one page. When snippets of the lyrics appear in every scene, not knowing the tune becomes a problem. It bugs me, and the lyrics in Clover are on every page. David Welsh recently took that a step further, and pointed out that the lyrics are also atrocious. Sure, Sue and Kazuhiko are on a journey, but I get it. I get that she wants to be taken someplace far away, and that she may or may not be seeking happiness during or at the end of said journey. I don’t need to read it on every page. It really is repeated that frequently. I would count how many times that line appears, but that would require reading that line over and over once again.

I like the plot itself. It’s quite romantic, and I’m a sucker for stories that are good at jumping around their timeline. The first two volumes tell a continuous story, then the third volume jumps back in time to focus on Ora, an absentee character central to the first story, then the fourth volume jumps back even further to talk about another character and the Clover project in general. Technically, the series is unfinished, and I suppose it’s possible the story could go on from the end of the second volume, but I’m pretty satisfied with what we got. It reads like a complete series. Apparently CLAMP had originally planned it to be six volumes, but I can’t recall what was going to be in the next two.

I don’t like the abruptness of the storytelling, which is a problem that’s complicated by the strange (but unique and completely awesome) setting and the political unrest that we are thrown into. Details offer themselves up in a timely manner, and you can see that the story is well-planned as you read, but I still hate that things get underway and move fast right from page one. The fast pace works against the plot too, since it means that most of what’s going on flies by and strips the main story down to a very short journey to Fairy Park with brief delays. There’s also something that seems insincere when otherwise serious and romantic stories move so quickly. But the fast pace is rewarded as we learn more and more about Sue and Kazuhiko and what is happening to the both of them, and the way Sue opens up at the end of the story is still great, even after all these years.

I like that the emotions of the characters are offered without any explanation, too. In the third story, Ora and Kazuhiko are lovers completely smitten with one another, and what we see of the two of them provides enough evidence to see how devastating what happens to Ora truly is. Similarly, the friendship between Kazuhiko and Ginsetsu is never discussed, but it is clearly a powerful bond between the two men.

For the record, Ora is up with Watanuki and Kamui as one of my favorite CLAMP characters of all time. I hated Clover the first time through, but I loved Ora. I still do. She’s a great character, and plays her role well. I wish Sue had been developed as much as Ora. Sue’s very basic role works well in the context of the series, but aside from knowing that she’s been isolated and her feelings on Ora and Kazuhiko, we know absolutely nothing else about her thoughts and feelings on anything at all. Even at her most sincere, she seems completely devoid of emotion. I think that her lack of emotion lends itself well to the scene where she opens herself up, though, which may be the point.

The art, while fantastic and certainly some of CLAMP’s best, can also be… well, misinterpreted, and uninteresting to some. There are some brilliant page spreads, and its minimalism is well-suited to the story here, but my roommate took one look at it and pronounced it “lazy,” though I would disagree. There isn’t much on most of the pages, and all four volumes only took me about an hour and a half to read. Take that how you will. But I see the emptiness as an amazing use of negative space, and it also excels at its fantastic panel layouts that trickle down and through single and double page spreads. It also has wonderful details in the setting and clothing the characters wear. Ora really feels like the centerpiece of the entire story, both in terms of her character design (both of them) and the outfits she wears. And what I wouldn’t give to have those wide CLAMP shoulders back in the current works.

But keep in mind that a lot of those panel layouts are there to effectively give the lyrics to those awful songs something to wrap around. Never forget those ever-present songs.

So I still don’t like Clover, but I can admit that I like the plot much more than I did when I was younger. The subtleties of the characters and the love story that was going on were lost on me at the time, and that’s a large part of what makes the series enjoyable. But again, that is all ruined by having to read those songs over and over again. Sure, you could just skip them, but they’re there. In that awful font, too. You don’t have to do more than glance at them to know what they say. It’s a real problem.
