Walking beside Checkpoint Charlie Sue and I ran into this huge metal fence warding off potential souvenir hunters of the erstwhile Berlin Wall. On the western side (still) exists evidence of some of the world’s best artwork? The Wall was supposedly the ‘longest art gallery’ ever seen by the western world. We saw some stunning examples in parts that have remained intact. We did not visit the souvenir shop at one corner of the Wall.

Standing at Checkpoint Charlie we couldn’t help feeling being part of a history that had such a momentous impact on our lives. The last bastion of the Cold War had been wiped out in one physical sweep. Neither of us spoke for about a minute. It being relatively early we were able to make it to the Checkpoint Charlie Museum before the queues got in. A film on the Third Reich and the Cold War was being screened when we walked in. Both Sue and I felt pretty grim after the viewing. So, we decided to visit one of the swankiest districts in Berlin called Steglitz-Zehlendorf. Our travel agent had told us about its university campus and its various art museums. Just at that point, however, we were in no mood to visit museums or places of historical interest, something we would regret later. After a swim in the Wannsee Lake we did a bit of shopping at the “Schlossstrasse” known for its fair-priced and good quality outlets.

The next morning we went to see the traditionally symbolic Berlin edifice- the Reichstag or the Parliamentary building. This stolid structure has really stood the test of time rather well after being gutted by the Nazis and suffering damages during World War II. Walking up the ramp to view the cupola and the mirrored funnel is something I will never forget.

That evening Sue and I let our hair down at Club der Visionare where we sipped cocktails and listened to music by the seaside. All in all, a heavenly experience.

Gestern Abend habe ich während des visionierens ein paar leckere Augustiner genossen und dabei an meine Band gedacht, die zum gleichen Zeitpunkt 500km entfernt probte. Ein komisches Gefühl.
Letzte Woche und die Woche davor haben wir Dredg auf ihren fünf Konzerten in Deutschland supporten dürfen. Das war einfach großartig für uns!
Hätte mir jemand in der Vergangenheit erzählt, dass wir Dredg supporten würden, wäre ich mit Sicherheit in schallendes Gelächter ausgebrochen. Und jetzt ist es tatsächlich passiert- unglaubich aber wahr.

Dredg- The Canyon Behind Her

Anfang September erschient Jacopo Carreras erstes Album “From Bed to Couch” auf Lan Muzic (Kompakt). Ein Album dass sich von 90% aller Technoproduktionen abhebt, weil es einfach so ungewohnt klingt. Wenig komprimiert, der Sound reicht von Underworld, Plaid über Breaks und Rock (diesmal aber nicht als Schimpfwort), melodisch (kein Trance) und klingt schon auf CD so was von live, dass ich gespannt bin, wie er es schaffen will, live noch direkter zu klingen.

Zu sehen morgen (Do) ab 20h im Club der Visionäre, Berlin-Kreuzberg. Freier Eintritt und gemütliche Kanallage inklu.
