I listen to Trance music in so many hours of my days and nights that it’s odd to be in a silent room. A recent project required me to make a logo for a night club, “Club Life”. This name is derived from Tiesto’s radio show in the Netherlands by the same name: “Tiesto’s Club Life”. Trance has been made famous by such artists including Tiesto, Armin Van Buuren, David Guetta, Paul van Dyk, Robert Miles, Above & Beyond, Markus Schulz, Ferry Corsten, Gareth Emery, Sander Van Doorn, ATB, Paul Oakenfold, and many more. Club Life is for the trendy, night clubbers with a love for trance and dancing with friends or other lovers of this music style. Today I met with veteran Los Angeles Club Manager Rusty Marrone. At this point in time he is managing Coco Deville on La Cienega Blvd in Los Angeles.  It’s one of the strangest venues I’ve ever played…..They call it an “uber lounge”…. Basically what they’re saying is “we don’t give a fuck this venue is the size of a closet, play it like u were playing a Vegas megaclub”. It took me a while to get it but……yeah I got it. I’m playing there tomorrow night for some “woman’s event” and I was also for choice for their New Year’s Eve party sponsored by Red Bull.  Should be interesting. I usually play @ the Beverly Wilshire Hotel for New Years for Wolfgang Puck’s Cut restaurant, but that place is like a convalescent home. Nothing like watching old people get down to Lil’ Wayne.  So i’m stoked this year should be fun.

On a music front….. Check out the Hype Machine! There’s plenty of goods to download today.  I’ve been most inspired by Dubstep Remixer Rusko.  The track “Bring it On” by Leon Jean Marie hits so hard…..love it. And for you Electro Heads out there, Jelo and Adam K came out with a fat track called ” The good, the Bad & the Funky…..a MUST add.

I’m also beginning to work on my first dubstep remix of the song “Reverser” by rising band Seaspin.  Looking forward to posting it for you.

I just finished a routine Monday-Tuesday for Russell Patrick Brown (the brown bard).  It consisted of waking up between the ridiculously late hours of three to five PM (which is a free indulgence, unlike buying fur coats, tap dancing or snorting cocaine), doing my “morning” rituals, working out at David Barton gym and then scooting off to work.  The night would then sometimes be capped with boys, going to the park to practice my harp, reading and/or looking at porn.

What really struck me this week about this routine is how similar it is to the routines of the medieval religious orders of men.  Blrrrrp.  Okay, don’t get out your holy water (if you’re Catholic) or your lube (if you’re a devout fuck-you-Christians) just yet.  In the course of this way-gay day, I couldn’t help but think that I have become a member of a fraternity of men.

We rise at different hours of course than our old hooded brethren, but we all rise with a reverence for our bodies, our things, our lives and our spirits.  And they gays follow Oprah and as much as they don’t want to admit they have read or seen Rhonda Byrne’s The Secret, we all have.  And although we may say it’s hogwash, we really do know that we can accomplish our dreams (How else were we able to cope with our respective times in the closet?) so we visualize our day, our weeks, our years and our lives going just the way our hearts want them.

Next is often a trip to the temple of body: the gym.  Now gay men may seem to be awfully shallow, but men who are in shape understand that you cannot master your body without mastering your mind to some degree.  Now, as someone who was once overweight and therefore overlooked, I will say that doesn’t excuse bitchiness.  That said, consider what it mentally takes to be in shape:

1.  Loving yourself.  Picture the hot muscle guy working out at the gym.  Do you notice him admiring himself?  Some may call it conceit, but consider the alternative, the person who looks at themselves in the mirror every goddamn day and curses the body they were given by the Fates, which would you chose?  In order to have a beautiful body, you have to think you’re beautiful and that will be fuel for the mind when you work out.

2. Appetite.  The opposite of Gluttony (one of the seven deadly sins) according to the tale of the Last Adventure of Thyl Ulenspiegel is Appetite.  Gluttony is continuing to consume food when you are full; living in excess; and consuming to the point of waste.  Appetite is a higher metabolism; it is eating 5x a day going into each meal at a hunger level of four and coming out a six (on a scale of one to ten); it is being balanced by never being too hungry or too full.  When you finish a meal not that full, your body will not treat it as extra, it will treat it as fuel for life.  And maintaining appetite takes discipline and control.  And appetite is good–it keeps you active and wanting more in life, which is natural on the material plane of life.

3. Courage.  When your body is screaming in pain to stop those pull-ups and just lay down and watch Top Chef, you find more willpower within you.  And boy, my sessions with my personal trainer have given me more strength mentally to go through difficult tasks in life than I ever imagined.  For example, when I was entering the recording studio for the very first time started thinking like I did when going through a tough, puke-inducing hour-long workout.  I would count knowing that’s the pulse of life and eventually, if you keep doing one thing after another the best you can, you will be finished.  Effective gym training takes courage.

4. Focus.  When approaching an enormous weight contraption with pulleys and straps that look like they are designed to crush people like a junk-yard car crusher, you must focus on what the work is.  When I approach a tricep extension rope pull down, I make sure my body is in proper form to support the muscles that I will be targeting.  I make sure I’m not trying to be anything I’m not and I choose the proper weight for me.  Then, as I begin the exercise, I put almost one-hundred percent of my concentration (the rest is regulating my body’s form) on the muscle that is being worked.  This takes major focus.  I don’t workout thinking about the groceries I need to buy or how much I want to slit Craig’s throat next time I see him at work.  I workout thinking about me.  I give my body the attention it deserves.

5. Fun.  Gym workouts are most effective when they’re fun.  And how do we often create fun?  By finding what’s challenging.  What’s challenging in the gym?  Different workouts.  New things.  One week you work out one muscle group at a time and rest a lot.  The next week you’re hitting five muscle groups in one workout and going from one to the next.  The week after that you’re applying all your strength to cool things like rowing, rock climbing and Irish dancing.  Woohoo!  The more fun the workout is the better it goes.  And a huge part of this fun thing is having other people at the gym who form your support group, your fraternity.  These are people who will spot you, encourage you to do that extra rep and tell you how hot you’re starting to look.

So.  If there was a gym that represented this state of higher mind, David Barton would be it!  On top of all that (I say like the a Shamwow infomercial) there is trance-like music in the background.  This music, which carries into the club I work at, reminds me so much of the meditative and ecstatic musics I study when I explore world music.  Irish music rattles on and on, West African drumming presents a myriad of beat illusions over and over again, Indonesian Gamelon orchestras dispel demons with their myriad of bells dancing in different rhythms.  This is the new chant music of today.

This fraternity of men (and our straight male and female allies) also involves ritual intimacies.   There’s of course the expected hugs and kisses on the cheek. Then there’s the Ancient Athenian-style steam rooms, bathrooms and dance floors.  These are places where we are able to joyfully express our bodies and the pleasures they’ve given us (safe of course!).  I know my Christian readers may wince at this, but please join in with me.  The body is not at war with the spirit.  They are made as one and together.  Now is our heaven folks.

The other thing that is so often tied to this holy gay fraternity is some sort of artistic (or sometimes athletic) discipline, or at least admiration.  So many gays have found musical theater (born of ancient religious ceremony), fashion, visual art, cinema or badminton (or something) to be their nourishment to themselves.  Having gone through the shittiness of coming out in America (Yeah! We’re still not equal! Woohoo!), we find the arts to be a wonderful meditation on our world.  We were born different, and those who dwell with the arts are indeed different; it fits.

Gosh, I could just go on and on about how cool it is to be gay.  Yes, we all know how bad it can be, the discrimination, the rejection for not looking good enough, the inability to have our own children, the bitchiness, etc.  But let’s count the fucking good stuff!  We really are an amazing network of people who were the creators of the AIDS prevention movement.  It’s normal for a group of gay men to consist of many different generations.  We will be there for someone if they’re coming out–we haven’t forgotten ourselves what it’s like.  We’re a pretty swell bunch.

This is why I think it’s the perfect time for old stuff like fraternities of men, priesthoods and bards to come back.  In a new, cool way of course.  We are still creating them in our own ways, but I think we could really benefit from looking back on how it used to be done, studying it and seeing how we can learn from it.  Just imagine if we could go about our days with a little more respect and love for each other?  Imagine how special gyms could be.  How much more beautiful your life would be made by all the people in it.

As I was hanging out with my co-workers Monday night at 5 AM, I couldn’t help but think about how lucky we are.
