Synopsis: Based on the board game of the same name, Clue is a hilarious and completely enjoyable whodunit mansion mystery movie. It’s set in the 1950s (the golden age of whodunit mystery movies and books). Six fashionable guests are invited (or rather, compelled through blackmail) to the English country mansion of Mr. Boddy, only to arrive and find that not only is their host not present, but they are all trapped in the mansion with each other and the butler and maid. Guests start dying and they are all left to figure out who the murderer is before they are killed themselves. The movie features three different endings, all included on the DVD.

Review: The movie doesn’t take itself seriously-it is filled with satirical jokes about the classic mystery genre-distinguishing itself from most of the other mansion mysteries on this list. The comedy is both clever and slapstick, a fun combination if you’re in the right mood. Watch the trailer below to see the style, and particularly some of the many great one-liners. Despite the comedic genre, there are also several genuinely spooky scenes.

The Clue movie has everything that makes a mansion mystery enjoyable: a luxe mansion, exaggerated characters, British accents, the requisite butler, and a dark-and-stormy-night ambiance. Also very satisfying (and unusual) is the fact that they managed to make a good movie based on a nostalgic board game. I highly recommend it. It’s worth repeat watchings, as well, to see how each of the three endings fit in. (If this concerns you, don’t worry, because they tell you which is the “real” ending, so there’s an actual solvable mystery) Clue is a fun movie to see with a group (just make sure there aren’t kids in the group). Even better: make an evening out of it by playing the board game Clue then watching the Clue movie.

Update: I just learned that there is a remake of Clue: The Movie in the works from Universal Studios! It’s set to come out in 2013, according to IMDB. Perhaps they were encouraged by the success of Gosford Park in addition to the cult classic status of Clue. The original Clue mansion burned down in 2005, so they’ll have to use a different location.

This is one of my most favourite films EVER! It’s got such an awesome cast and couldn’t be funnier if it tried.

This utter gem stars one of my favourite actors ever, Tim Curry. This man is so commanding, hilarious, scary, brilliant and any and all positive things an actor could be.

The influence for this post is because Chad from New Found Glory had put a pic up on Twitter as he ran into him when leaving his gym after an MMA class.

I so wish I could meet him, I bet he is such a nice guy and we all know he is funny as hell Chad is looking well old here, weird, innit?

Here are a few posters for Clue when it was released.

CLUE (aka: Cluedo, aka: Clue: The Movie) (1985)
Flawed but well-meaning, Clue does what it can with the board game premise. It’s garnered a sizable fan base on video and cable primarily due to a game cast (heh), which includes Leslie Ann Warren (Miss Scarlet), Eileen Brennan (Mrs. Peacock), Martin Mull (Col. Mustard), Christopher Lloyd (Prof. Plum), Madeline Kahn (Mrs. White) and Michael McKean (Mr. Green). Aging punk rocker, Lee Ving, is the doomed Mr. Body. Colleen Camp is sexy as Yvette, the maid. But its Tim Curry’s performance as Wadsworth the butler, that makes Clue worth your time. Much of the movie seems modeled on William Castle’s House on Haunted Hill! Clue was released theatrically with three different endings. You had to see the movie three times in three different theatres if you wanted to see them all! I doubt many did. Of course having three possible endings renders most of the “mystery” moot. The VHS version crams all three into the last few minutes of the movie while the DVD gives you the option of one or all. So obviously, not everything here works. In fact, an ill-advised dog shit joke unfortunately sabotages the movie’s first fifteen minutes. Despite some PG13 sex jokes, kids seem to love Clue. I sure as hell did. I made my parents (I was 11) take me to see it in THREE theaters to see all the endings. (The newspaper listings indicated which theater was showing which version: A, B or C.) I wonder how many people on earth can make the same claim. I actually have a hard-cover Clue: The Storybook with big, colorful stills from the movie and the plot interpreted for CHILDREN but without hedging on references to Miss Scarlet’s escort service! It was published by Little Simon and is a cherished artifact for me. A paperback novelization was published as well. John Landis shares story credit with director, Jonathan Lynn. A “Clue” VCR game (There was a very short-lived VCR game craze in the 80s.) came out around the same time. It was unrelated to the movie, hard to play and pretty much sucked in general.

This one reminded me of when I was in LA and my sisters, mom and I were playing Catch Phrase. My mo

This one reminded me of when I was in LA and my sisters, mom and I were playing Catch Phrase. My mom had the phrase “snow job” and she said something like “when a guy is feeding you a line of bull” and I responded with “a conversation”. Ahh, that was a good one.

Anyways here is the RISTLTMB:

why does a guy say we’ll see how it goes

Poor girl.

In other news: I am watching Clue as I’m waiting for the beginning of the Army/Navy game. Go NAVY! And then the SEC Championship game.

I love this movie.

This line by Mrs. Peacock is one of the best in movie history- at least in my humble opinion.

Well, someone’s got to break the ice, and it might as well be me. I mean, I’m used to being a hostess, it’s part of my husband’s work. And it’s always difficult when a group of new friends meet together for the first time, to get acquainted. So I’m perfectly prepared to start the ball rolling. I mean, I-I have absolutely no idea what we’re doing here. Or what I’m doing here, or what this place is about, but I am determined to enjoy myself. And I’m very intrigued, and, oh my, this soup’s delicious, isn’t it?
