Highlights of my first Critical Mass:
I ran into a bike cop. Head first.  He asks me if I was OK, then looks at me with a straight face
and says “Really? I MEAN REALLY?”
Also, flat, about 10 miles in. Thank you Eric. You saved my night. Twice.  However, while fixing my flat, I missed
riding through department stores at the mall. 
Thirty miles total, top speed 36, fucking awesome kick ass alleycat scramble without a prize at the end. Way to make that
Leader frame look good.  Fucking hipsters.  Could have been worse. 
-10 for the locals that drove there. 

Consensus:
“San Diego Critical Mass”= proof bikes are a viable means of looking cool.
“Critical Pass”= pathetic reason to drive somewhere to unload your car to sit around while everyone is
gone riding to drink beer. You drove for this?!
“Nice bike”= you’re hot, and kicking my ass on this hill.

มันอาจเป็นคำกล่าวที่ได้ยินเสมอว่า “เสือสองตัวอยู่ถ้ำเดียวกันไม่ได้” หากลองมองย้อนหลังกลับไปถึงความเฟื่องฟูของ Championship Manager หรือที่เรียกติดปากว่า “CM” ที่เคยรุ่งเรืองในอดีต จะพบว่าวันนี้พวกเขาพยายามทำให้มันกลับมาสู่ยุคนั้นอีกครั้ง       ซึ่งเราคงจะไม่สามารถไปตัดสินฟันธงว่าเกมส์ไหนสนุกกว่ากันมันเป็นความคิดของแต่ละบุคคล แต่แน่นอนว่าแต่ละเกมส์ผู้สร้างย่อมตั้งใจในการสร้างและพัฒนามันแน่นอน!

Championship Manager 2010 หรือ CM2010 ได้พัฒนารูปลักษณ์ใหม่และขัดเกลาตัวเกมส์ของมันให้ดียิ่งขึ้นหลังจากที่ Paul Collyer and Oliver Collyer สองพี่น้องผู้ตั้งบริษัท Sports Interactive (SI)บริษัทที่ได้ประกาศยกเลิกในการพัฒนาเกม ของ  Championship Manager ซึ่งอยู่ในค่ายของ Eidos Interactive Ltd ในปี 2003 และได้ผลิตเกมส์ ผู้จัดการทีมฟุตบอลภายใต้แบรนด์ ของตัวเองที่ชื่อ Football Manager หรือ “FM” ในปี 2004 ภายใต้ค่ายของบริษัทผลิตเกมส์สัญชาติญี่ปุ่นที่ชื่อ SEGA นั่งเอง

อีกระบบหนึ่งที่น่าสนใจของภาคนี้คือแนวการฝึกจัดตารางการฝึกซ้อม ที่มีภาพให้เห็นไม่ว่าจะเป็นการฝึกยิงประตู การเลี้ยงทำชิ่งเข้าไปยิง การเลี้ยงแล้วเปิดเข้ามาในการจัดตัวการวิ่งแข่ง ฝึกยิงลูกโทษและรวมทั้งฝึกซ้อมแบ่งทีม a และทีม b เพื่อดูประสิทธิภาพของทีม

นอกจากนี้ยังมีระบบ CM season live เป็นระบบที่สามารถดาวโหลด สถานะอัพเดตได้อย่างทันเหตุกาณ์เป็นบริการอัพเดตข้อมูลการย้ายทีมนักเตะจริงๆ ให้กับผู้เล่น CM 2010 ฟรีๆ โดยจะมีการอัพเดตให้เดือนละ 1 ครั้ง ถ้าผู้เล่นกดอัพเดตข้อมูลนักเตะย้ายทีมก็จะเป็นไปตาม ตลาดซื้อขายนักเตะของ จริง ไม่เท่านั้น การอัพเดตนี้ยังใส่ข้อมูลบาดเจ็บด้วย ถ้านักเตะตัวจริงเจ็บ ในเกมก็โดย CM Season Live จะเริ่มให้บริการวันแรกคือวันที่ 15 ตุลาคม และจะอัพเดตทุกเดือนเป็นเวลา 6 เดือนซึ่งเป็นช่วงที่ปิดฤดูกาล

แต่อย่างไรก็ตามปัญหาเรื่องระบบควบคุมการจัดทีมรวมทั้งการขาดความคิดของผู้จัดการfeedbacksหลังการแข่งขันที่ยังคงเหมือนๆกับภาคก่อนๆซึ่งยังคงต่างไปจากของ FM ที่เน้นรายละเอียดที่เนี้ยบและให้ความสำคัญกับ feedbacks มากซึ่งบางทีมันอาจจะมากเกินไปจนบางครั้งคิดว่ามันน่ารำคาญด้วยซ้ำ

หากเทียบกับ FM แล้วจุดเด่นซึ่งเป็นนวัตกรรมใหม่ของCMที่สร้างความตื่นตาตื่นใจให้กับผู้เล่นได้มาสู้ทัดเทียมกับความแน่นของข้อมูลและระบบการจัดการที่เป็นระเบียบรายละเอียดที่อัดแน่น คงทำให้ผู้คนเริ่มหันกลับมามองCM และติดใจในสิ่งแปลกตาเหล่านั้นมากขึ้น

I’m setting up a local TFS test environment for myself now and hopefully soon should have some interesting information on setting up Lean build systems using this great platform.  I was lucky enough to work at a company that used the previous incarnation of Team Foundation Server and I have to admit I’m pretty excited to see what goodies Microsoft is giving us on this go-around.

…og jeg er FM-holiker. Jeg har ikke spilt på tre måneder.

Misbruket begynte i 1993, med Championship Manager på Amiga. I begynnelsen trodde jeg at jeg kunne kontrollere det.

Bare et par timer i dag og. Det går bra.

Jeg var ung, så nattesøvnen var ikke noe stort problem. Jeg kunne alltids ta en kjapp lur rett etter skoletid og vente med leksene.

Så fort en ny versjon var i butikkene, løp jeg. Jeg klarte meg ikke uten siste oppdatering og nye funksjoner. Og ja, dette spillet kjøpes!

Etter noen år, endret jeg innkjøpspolitikken noe. Jeg prøvde å skjule avhengigheten ved å gi meg selv årets utgave til jul, med hilsen fra Julenissen. Denne strategien fungerte perfekt, og ingen fattet mistanke til at jeg hadde et problem.

Jeg fikk samboer og etter hvert kone, og da fikk jeg mer hjelp til å skjule misbruket, helt uten å jobbe for det. Den bedre halvdelen begynte nemlig å gi meg siste utgave av FM til jul! Dermed slapp jeg unna den dårlige samvittigheten også. Det var jo ikke min skyld at hun ville være snill!

Etter hvert ble det barn også, noe som førte til mindre spilletid. Det var nok til det bedre for familien, men jeg har ikke klart å holde meg helt unna, og det har blitt mer periodemisbruk.

Når jeg nå har klart å holde meg unna i 3 måneder, merker jeg suget igjen. I tillegg nærmer det seg jul. FM 2010 er i butikkene, og jeg har siklet på det en stund. Jeg har til og med kjøpt andre spill for å prøve å erstatte hungeren etter FM, men det er ingen ting som varer særlig lenge.

Jeg tror jeg trenger en sponsor. Hva gjør jeg om jeg får det jul i år og? Skal jeg be om å ikke få det? Men det er jo så deilig…

In my last article I hinted about investigating the use of an open source tool in support of my current employment.  I won’t go into details about the use case itself but I will gladly describe the tool and its potential.  First, a little background.

The Need

As noted in previous articles, a large part of my work the past several years has been in information management, specifically product and application configuration.  I’ve so far had the pleasure of leading and supporting work on two major enterprise rollouts of workflow solutions, each employing different commercial offerings and approaches to implementation.

The first project addressed a huge gap in product data and change management for consumer products development.  PTC Windchill was selected for the workflow solution based on its own strengths and helped by the fact that PTC product engineering applications were already in use.

The next project at a later employer involved replacing a claims handling application with a true process workflow solution.  Serena Business Mashup (SBM) was selected over competing products due to its rich feature set and seemingly unlimited extensibility.  I found the development environment (Mashup Composer) to be flexible, powerful and intuitive.

Both projects were very successful in streamlining and improving the ability of stakeholders to view end-to-end processes and manage events in their domains.  The commercial products involved proved their value although expenses were certainly significant.

An Open Alternative

In my current employment I am once again faced with the need to improve management of an enterprise activity, except that the prevailing economic decline prevents the sort of corporate funding that had been required for the other two projects.  This led me to search for low cost or even free solutions.

I found several tools that looked promising, but just about every search highlighted one in particular: the open source ProcessMaker.  Glowing write-ups such as this one by Python Developer’s Journal gave the impression that this free tool just might be close enough to WindChill or SBM to significantly improve our change management process.

The Short Take

ProcessMaker is 100% web-based and managed at popular open source hoster SourceForge.  The PM website states that its code “… is licensed under the GNU Affero General Public License version 3”.  It is provided in Windows and Linux versions.

I downloaded and installed the latest Windows version (1.2-2865) to my work laptop running XP.  The installation included MySQL and the Apache web server.  The first installation attempt hung up on the Apache portion at the end, but the second try went smoothly.  I’m not sure what happened (or didn’t happen) the first time.

I’ve barely explored what ProcessMaker can do and yet so far I am impressed.  While its mashups have not yet reached the number that one can access for Serena’s offerings, the same potential is there and hopefully the open source community is already at work developing more to be shared.  ProcessMaker supports Web Service Definition Language (WSDL), enabling a process developer to integrate numerous off-the-shelf applications that provide similar access.

The interface is clean and fairly easy to navigate.  However, I could see immediately that I’ll have to read the documentation and/or follow tutorials before being able to develop a useful process model.  Still, by sheer intuition alone I was able to create a new user, associate him with a group, install a sample weather report mashup and run the activity successfully.  This speaks well for the UI design.

I did find some minor but obvious phrasing issues in some areas, possibly reflecting ProcessMaker’s international heritage (Colosa has offices in New York, Bolivia and Peru and partners with a Danish IT firm) but they were not showstoppers.  Indeed, even in my untrained fumbling I did not run into anything that raised any real concerns.

ProcessMaker has recently brought data table creation and management to its set of features, bringing it closer to its commercial peers.  I’m eager to test this particular addition and see how it stacks up against Mashup Composer’s robust equivalent.

Bottom Line

 WindChill was the first purely Internet-architectured data management and collaboration tool, so by now (version 9.1) it’s very mature.  Too much time has passed since I worked with WindChill so I couldn’t do a post mortem justice.  I do recall that it easily handled everything we threw at it and integrated well with our other enterprise systems… SAP, BPCS et al.  It’s strictly a commercial offering.

Serena’s Business Mashup solution certainly has the power to wire together any silos across an enterprise landscape.  Serena has taken a hybrid approach in this space, offering a closed commercial product supported by a growing collection of popular user-developed mashups.

ProcessMaker, however, is completely free and open so that the developer community can create and push upstream additions and improvements not only to mashups but also the core product.  Colosa, the group behind ProcessMaker, charges only for training, hosting and other support.

There’s nothing wrong with PTC’s and Serena’s commercialization of course but lately I’m coming to believe more and more that ProcessMaker’s open mode is that of the future… assuming of course it reaches the critical mass necessary to attract enough mashup developers.  My initial take is that it definitely has the potential.

I plan to continue exploring that potential and expect to do at least one more general follow-up once I’m more familiar with the product… hopefully soon!

I find it ridiculous, that politicians in India involve themselves with issues abroad, especially when they have their hands full with issues of our own.

Also worthwhile is to note that the Maoists in India are considered “terrorist” while the LTTE is empathized with. Isn’t that hypocrisy???

HYDERABAD: Apparently acting under the Centre’s directive, Chief Minister K Rosaiah has sought a CBI inquiry into the alleged illegal mining of iron ore in Anantapur district by Obulapuram Mining Company (OMC) and its subsidiaries owned by Karnataka Minister Gali Janardhan Reddy.With this move, the Congress leadership in the State intends not only to silence the Opposition, which has been crying hoarse that the State government has remained a mute spectator to the illegal activity but also hit at Janardhan Reddy who is suspected to be the financial power behind YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, son of the late chief minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy, who has set his sights on the top post in the State. The Rosaiah government, through the action, also hopes to clear itself of the charge that it is working hand in glove with Janardhan Reddy and allowing him to continue with the ‘‘illegal mining’’.Of the three panels – each from forest, industries and mines departments – formed by the State to go into the mining issue, the forest department officials, whose work has come under flak from the Opposition parties, is all set to submit its report in a day or two. The panel, it is learnt, has prima facie established that the OMC did involve itself in illegal mining.The Gali brothers, who had close ties with YSR, had ‘successfully’ acquired all the mining companies in Obulapuram area except the Bellary Iron Ore Ltd (BIOL) which has mining sites next to that of OMC’s.When OMC started encroaching on the mines of the BIOL, the latter lodged several complaints with the State government. Failing to get a response, the BIOL moved the AP High Court and then the Supreme Court which directed the Survey of India to demarcate the areas belonging to the OMC and the BIOL. However, the Survey of India sought protection to its officials to conduct the survey. With the then AP government failing to give an assurance on providing protection, the survey has not been taken up and the OMC continued its ‘illegal mining’ in the areas belonging to the BIOL and the AP forest department.Following the sudden demise of Rajasekhara Reddy, the forest department officials served notices on the OMC. Meanwhile, the Opposition Congress in Karnataka demanded that the State too, following the AP example, order a CBI probe into the “illegal mining” besides dropping Gali brothers and Sriramulu from cabinet.
