Update: You can use the following registry script to automate this process – just copy/paste the code block below into a text file called “Add Consolas to CMD.reg” and run it:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Console\TrueTypeFont]
"0"="Lucida Console"
"00"="Consolas"

RegEdit - Console Fonts

If you’d like to use an alternative console font for CMD.exe in Windows, check out the scoop from Microsoft Support on how to set it up…

The fonts must meet the following criteria to be available in a command session window:

The font must be a fixed-pitch font.

The font cannot be an italic font.

The font cannot have a negative A or C space.

If it is a TrueType font, it must be FF_MODERN.

If it is not a TrueType font, it must be OEM_CHARSET.

Additional criteria for Asian installations:

If it is not a TrueType font, the face name must be “Terminal.”

If it is an Asian TrueType font, it must also be an Asian character set.

In Windows 2000, the installation of Console Fonts is no longer automated. This was done to give the console window greater stability in multilanguage environments. An unsupported work around is available by adding the following font specific entry:

Add a String Value
Name=00
Data= “Font Name” (without “”)

Into the following registry:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Console\TrueTypeFont

The name needs to be incrimented with “0″ for each additional font. The Data entry needs to match the font’s entry in the following registry location:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Fonts

via Necessary criteria for fonts to be available in a command window.

And, if you’re itching to find a nice replacement for Courier New or Lucida Console:

Consolas:
If you have Windows Vista or windows 7, this is already installed, otherwise you’ll need to download the PowerPoint Viewer 2007 from Microsoft to get the font legally. (As an added bonus, the rest of the Windows Vista fonts come with it – see here for details: Download Windows Vista Fonts from Microsoft Office Website)

DejaVu Sans Mono:
This font comes pre-installed with many current Linux distributions and is released under a free license, which makes this font arguably the best of the bunch. Find it here: http://dejavu-fonts.org/wiki/index.php?title=Download

Droid Sans Mono:
Straight from the Android SDK comes the Droid Sans Mono font, which is quite similar to the DejaVu Sans Mono font listed above. You can grab this from the Android SDK download, or you can get it directly from the damieng blog here: Droid Sans Mono great coding font

First, you’ll need the Consolas font. If you’re not currently running Windows Vista, then you’ll need to get it via the PowerPoint Presentation Viewer, which will install Consolas, among other nice Vista fonts. (Or, if you have Visual Studio 2005 or 2008, you can just grab the Consolas Font Pack for Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 or 2008)

Once you have this font installed, open up Registry Editor (regedit.exe) and navigate to the following key, as shown below:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Console\TrueTypeFont\

Then, right click in the blank area and choose New > String Value.

Double click this new value and enter the following information:

Name: 00
Data: Consolas

Your window should now look like this:

Once this is done, open a console window (cmd.exe) and choose Consolas from the Font tab:

Thanks to Scott Hanselman’s Computer Zen for the tips on how to set this up!

Update: There seems to be an easier way to do this, as I just found from the IEBlog:

Bryn Spears on the Internet Explorer team gave me the following simple instructions to turn on Consolas in the CMD Window:

reg add “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Console\TrueTypeFont” /v 00 /d Consolas

logoff

Note: In Windows Vista, you need to run the reg command from an elevated command prompt.

When you log back in, Consolas will be an option in the “Command Prompt” Properties. (n.b., Bryn tells me it actually shows up before you relog, but it won’t work.)

Lazımı faylları gizlətmək üçün bizə Windows əməliyyat sistemi və Winrar lazım olacaq. Misal üçün biz document1.doc və document2.doc adlı faylları cat.jpg adlı şəkilin içərisində gizlətmək istəyirik. Bunun üçün hər iki faylı (document1 və document2) seçib üzərilərində sol düyməni basmaq və “Add to archive” etmək lazımdır.

bundan sonra yeni cat_new.jpg adlı şəkil yaradılacaq və tərkibində document1.doc və document2.jpg adlı faylları saxlayacaq.
Okay youz, I’m posting this here so that you have a place to go to get a few basic elementary

Okay youz, I’m posting this here so that you have a place to go to get a few basic elementary questions answered regarding your DOS Command-Line. I guess it shouldn’t seem surprising that these past years of working within the Windows GUI has left some without any familiarity with that good-ol DOS prompt.

So what exactly is it?

Well, let’s start off by showing you what it looks like..

Back when we first bought our 8088-based IBM Personal Computers, the operating system for the most part was “DOS”. It was Microsoft DOS, or IBM DOS depending upon where you picked it up. But this is pretty much what it gave you – a terminal screen with lines of text. That “C:\>” with the fat underscore after it (it was blinking) was referred to as your “DOS prompt”. This is essentially just a text-based terminal window. Now, within Windows XP you access this by clicking on “Start”, then selecting “Run…”, and within that “Run” dialog you enter “cmd” and then click the “OK” button (or just hit the Enter key).

What you have now, is a terminal-window packaged within a Windows window (getting pun-twisted yet?). You type in your “DOS” commands and press your Enter key to make them execute, just as you (ahem) did back in the days of DOS. For brevity let’s refer to this as the “DOS Window”. We won’t cover how to use all the DOS commands here. When you’re done you can get rid of this thing by simply closing the window.

It’s still a useful mode to work in when you’re tinkering with, for example, Java, or some of the Windows command-line utilities, or F# (you Unix fellows go play somewhere else right now. We’re busy.)

Okay, let’s spruce this up just a tad, shall we?

If you’re like me, you like lots of space to see what you’re typing in. So let’s expand this a bit..

Click on the little icon at the upper-left corner of the DOS Window to drop down the “system” menu, and select “Properties”. Here’s what it should look like..

This should bring up the “Properties” dialog. Select the “Layout” tab, and here set your desired Screen Buffer and Window Size. Since I find the original too limiting, I generally make these settings larger. For example, under “Screen Buffer Size” try setting the width to 160, and under “Window Size” set it’s Width to 160 also plus set the height to 66. I use a 30″ display, so you may need a smaller size-setting. You can also change some other settings here. For example, just for giggles – select the “Colors” tab, click on the “Screen Text” radiobutton, and select a different color – I put mine to green (Red 0, Green 255, Blue 0). Then click on the “OK” button when you’re done.

Your DOS Window now resembles the old green displays we had in the IBM-PC days.

If you’re reading this blog then the point is probably moot, but I’ll put it out there anyway. One strong recommendation I was giving to IT admins who came to see me on the tour I was on for the past three weeks was this: if you need to go into cmd.exe to run some command, do it in PowerShell instead. This is really, really important. Jeffrey Snover talks about it here. Even if you don’t have time to dive in and start learning a lot about it today, just using PowerShell instead of cmd.exe is a step in the right direction. It will start exposing you to how things work slightly differently in PowerShell and allow you to start scratching the surface so that learning more is just that much easier when you do have the time to do so. The next time you find yourself in cmd.exe, flip over to PowerShell and run your commands there instead! You’ll be doing yourself a big favour!

Usually in huge frameworks, we’ve to run a lot of console applications for starting up the sys

Usually in huge frameworks, we’ve to run a lot of console applications for starting up the system. Sometimes we’ve to start it by specifying long commandline arguments. In those cases, instead of double click and running the application, usually we take command prompt and start applications by entering commandline.

When, Console opens, it points to the default path and we’ve change the directory to required folder by CD command. Is there any easy way to start command prompt with default path as selected folder in Windows explorer? Yep! there is.

Just do the following steps.

1) Take Windows explorer.
2) Take Tools > Folder options.
3) Take File Types tab.
4) Select “Folder” Filetype.
5) Click advanced.
6) Click “New“
7) Now give Action: “Cmd” and application used to perform action as “cmd.exe“
8 ) Now, click ok in all dialogs.
9) Now press WinKey+E to see the windows explorer.
10) Now right click on any of the folders in tree and you can see the menu item cmd.
11) Now click on that, a new console will be opened with default path as selected folder’s path.

I’m currently working with another developer on how to get random windows shell commands that are stored in a database to actually execute properly on a target system. The idea is that we’ll Start() a new Process object, and execute the command as arguments.

Check out this screenshot:

What we’re doing here is running the local ECHO command; which will write out another ECHO command to a batch file which we can then execute. A couple neat things which may help you:

The caret (^) character is an escape character for things like <, >, (, ), etc. These are special shell characters.

You can quote the whole string.

I hope this helps the random Google searcher who arrives here.
