CMYK is an awesome magazine that showcases student work in advertising, design, photography and illustration. The work is top-notch and selected for print by industry professionals. CMYK also features interviews, news and helpful articles. Past articles have included “15 Portfolio Don’ts For Juniors,” “The Job Climate for Juniors,” and “Internships: The New First Job.”

I eagerly await each new issue of CMYK, longingly looking into the Barnes & Nobel windows each time I pass. I totally get the work that goes into each issue, but it’s a bummer that it only comes out four times a year. I gobble the whole thing up in about ten minutes then spend the next couple of months periodically revisiting it. There’s work that makes you bristle with jealousy and work you convince yourself you totally could have done. Oh yeah. It’s an emotional roller coaster.

The latest issue (the 45th) has a whole new design, the story behind the new design, an interview with illustrator Christoph Neimann, and a “Job Hunting Survival Guide.” They’re not exaggerating the survival guide part- there’s tips on mooching samples at the grocery store and asking for directions in New York City. Great stuff.

They can turn the buildings of Fleet Street over to squatters.

They can raze Wapping to the ground and, if they like, put up a parking lot.

They can tear down the paper columns, screw the rags into balls and hurl them.

They can pulp all the newsprint and smash down the presses.

They can scrape the news from the paper and empty the magazines.

They can put an immediate end to the four-colour process and allow the ink to drain away.

They can make CMYK lose its meaning.

They can crush the puppets underfoot, banish the dancers, and drive out the street players.

They can silence the singers of the hand-me-down songs and the makers of the lore-relating music.

They can put the theatres and playhouses to the torch and have no more of their social commenting and politicking.

They can wish to alter the way of the daily cryptic clue commute and discontinue the Sunday morning supplement.

They can consign the DPS to history, and the full page, and the 25 across 4.

They can give the old commercial broadcasts thirty seconds either to get out of here or switch to Channel Click.

They can cut off the heads of the moguls and stick them on top of the BT Tower.

They can make media social.

They can itty-bitty digital it.

But creatively, from what I can see, they can’t make it any good.

I have just started this project for my art foundation called Archiving and Collections. Now, i have in some kind of arty way (otherwise known as bullshitted) my way through and now i’m looking at journeys, so like maps ect, iv gone on walks taking photos and stuff like that.

I have been looking at Robert Rauschenberg recently and i have been reading about typography and i have decided to make some posters as part of my final piece for this module.

Here is my starting point for posters, i got to this by looking at the maps and simplifying the way the roads join and link. I did this onto different colours (cyan, magenta, yellow and black) and then decided to layer them to add colour and to make it look more interesting.

This graphic hoodie made me laugh, the fact that it takes itself out of the design and becomes the method that the graphic hoodie is produced is brilliant. I don’t know who designed this graphic hoodie but I tip my hat of to you (if I was actually wearing a hat).

Why printing? The ways printing helps your company prosper.

At one time or another we all have taken printing for granted. Perhaps because print has been the world’s number one communication medium for so long, we tend to overlook its impact and power. That oversight could be detrimental to the success of a marketing campaign, a product launch or a branding initiative trying to make connections. Consumers trust print, feel comfortable using it and are unable to fast forward past it. Electronic content comes and goes and when it’s gone, your message disappears with it. Print, on the other hand, is there for the long run.

According to a recent survey by the Magazine Publishers of America 24% of readers will pass along an interesting article to someone else, 23% will save it for future reference and 13% will visit a relevant website; giving advertisers double and triple bonuses on their marketing investments.

This magazine is dedicated to the persuasive power of print and how it continues to evolve and play an important role in the marketing mix. Along with several informative articles throughout, we have included the advantages of using print. We hope you find this blog informative, inspiring and ultimately beneficial to your marketing efforts.

Sincerely,

No, probably not very frequently, but I’m here, I’m open. It’s been a very rough 11 months without you, but I don’t blame you.

What else is new? A pile of crazy and bizarre things have happened, with little specks of goodness in between.

I have graduated from Portfolio Center

I made it into CMYK’s Aspiring Artist’s edition

I was awarded a scholarship from one of the most amazing firms, Leo Burnett

I have worked on a variety of different projects with different clients, some wonderful, some causing health problems

I’ve gotten to talk to some very big people and firms and received positive, constructive and very negative feedback

It is rough out there, I fall a lot, but I carry a spatula and keep getting back up.

Making the Most of Marketing Dollars, Planning & Prepress Addressed Although it seems fairly str

Making the Most of Marketing Dollars, Planning & Prepress Addressed

Although it seems fairly straight forward, there are many decisions leading up to and within each print project that directly affect its bottom-line and overall impact. Proper planning and specific attention to detail can save thousands of dollars. Working with a reliable and knowledgeable print solutions representative is a great start; a partner willing to provide practical solutions to make the most of your marketing dollars.

The options to save during planning are endless with a little creative flexibility. And, below are just a few examples.

Removing bleed on an 8.5 x 11 flyer allows for 10, rather than 8, to print at a time and on the same parent-sized sheet; paper is normally 30 to 50% of the total job cost.

Think about using a self-cover format for multiple-page products. Removing the heavier cover eliminates the cost of an extra press form and may allow the project to fold in-line; every off-line process adds to the bottom line.

When preparing for a direct mail project consider the following:

• Processing the mailing list(s) in advance will establish the actual quantity needed and potentially reduce waste by 7% or more.

• Sticking to a maximum finished size of 11.5 wide x 6.125 tall, and staying under 3.3 oz, can save roughly $0.12 per piece in postage; a $2,400 savings with just 20,000 mailers.

• Fugitive glue dot closures can be applied during the folding process for a small set-up fee, while the wafer seal application adds $17 to $20 per thousand in each direction; new USPS regulations require closures on all “open” sides.

Once the final specs are established, a second place to prevent additional costs is in the final file set-up and content review stages. Utilizing each software application correctly and carefully reviewing projects before file release are critical steps in this process. Below are just a few examples of ways to retain cost controls.

Using a document size larger than the actual trim size of the piece, forgetting to include 1/8″ bleeds or building multiple-page products in spreads, rather than single pages, can all add considerable time and costs in to the prepress process.

Correctly specifying inks, throughout software utilized, has never been more important. Using PANTONE’s COLOR BRIDGE® profiles to establish your 4-color process builds will ensure color accuracy and avoid second and even third rounds of color proofs. To download free support tools, including the latest color libraries and PANTONE® Color Bridge Tutorials visit www.pantone.com. You will be asked to create a user account, then you can click on the “helpCenter” in the menu bar to select the “Color Library Updates” page.

Running a quick spell check and having an “outside” set of eyes review the overall content, before final file release, will also help avoid costly mistakes. Discovering grammatical and layout issues beforehand will help to keep projects on track and on budget.

sudo apt-get install imagemagick icc-profiles

convert -colorspace cmyk \
        cmjn.pdf[0] \
        -profile /usr/share/color/icc/ISOcoated.icc \
        -profile /usr/share/color/icc/sRGB.icm \
        -resize 56x56 \
        rvb.jpg

Et voilà !

Notes :
