Traders around the country are erupting in furor over Jim Cramer’s unfortunate comments in sup

Traders around the country are erupting in furor over Jim Cramer’s unfortunate comments in support of the proposed Trader Tax. Speaking on CNBC in his regular shoot-from-the-hip slot, Cramer basically said what amounted to “why not?” when asked about the Democrats’ backward idea to extract a percentage of every transaction on the markets.

I read his clarification on TheStreet.com this morning, and frankly, it was weak…something about how a Trader Tax would help bring jobs back or whatever, completely absurd. I got the impression that he wished he hadn’t said anything on the subject to begin with and wished he could back off of his original support for it. Oh well.

In the meantime, Eric Jackson, an activist investor, contributor to TheStreet.com and the voice of Breakout Performance, posted a very well-written look at what the consequences of a Trader Tax may mean here in the US:

While I support Cramer’s interest in seeing job creation flourish in America, I completely disagree that the “trader tax” will accomplish this aim. To the contrary, I think allowing such a tax to take root here would accomplish just the opposite. In my view, such a tax would encourage large amounts of capital to relocate outside of America, jobs would be lost (not gained) and total government tax revenue would likely go down.

For a preview of what could happen in the U.S. if this trader tax was imposed, look at Britain. At the moment, the U.K. is in even worse fiscal shape than the United States. Because of that, its Labour government recently introduced additional taxes that specifically target hedge funds’ trading profits. Government bureaucrats assumed this was an easy way of generating tax revenue. What they failed to appreciate is that capital has never been more fungible than in today’s global market.

London-based hedge funds immediately announced they were relocating to Switzerland in droves, where they would face none of the new taxes levied in the U.K. With those funds go certain administrative and back-office jobs. But more important, ask London bankers how they feel about losing the many profitable revenue streams attributable to doing business with hedge funds that will now be sent to Swiss banks.

Today markets endured serious declines all over the world because of this story. Problem is this is

Today markets endured serious declines all over the world because of this story. Problem is this is the day after Thanksgiving and neither FBN or CNBC put their best foot forward.

In the morning, if you didn’t want to sit through jokes waiting for more news, you had to switch from FBN to CNBC. FBN kept telling people that for those who wanted more analysis they should tune in to their live webcast. Not good enough. Not everyone wants to tie up their computer bandwidth in the morning like that. But it wasn’t a massively bad day in the offing. People were already speculating that US markets would not get hit as hard. One wonders what FBN would do if it was a really bad day in the making. Would it really stick with Imus and send business viewers packing to either CNBC or the FBN webcast, or would it bump Imus and go wall to wall? We’ll have to wait and see if that day ever comes and what the network ends up doing. But, for whatever shortcomings FBN had in handling the story early, it made up ground later in the day. It stayed live long past the point that markets closed and CNBC went to tape.

So it wasn’t a great day all around for the business nets. FBN kept Imus on while the story was breaking all over the world while CNBC was in full business news coverage mode. But later on in the day CNBC closed up shop while FBN stayed live. Nobody won this day. Both sides need to do some re-thinking.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Tiger Woods was seriously injured in a car accident early this morning.

No confirmation of any specific details that I have seen yet except for brief updates by CNN and ESPN. I saw on RotoWorld.com that Tiger Woods agent told CNBC that Woods was fine. We’ll have to keep watching and hope that Tiger is OK.

If anyone does hear or find any links to more information, please feel free to leave in the comment section.

Famous pro golfer Tiger Woods was seriously injured in a car crash early Friday outside his Orlando home, according to The Orlando Sentinel.

The single-car crash occurred early Friday when Woods, 33, apparently slammed his Escalade into a fire hydrant and a tree at his neighbor’s property, the newspaper said quoting Florida Highway Patrol officials.

The crash occurred as Woods pulled out of his home in his Escalade in the Isleworth community at about 2:25 a.m.

I took some snapshots from CNBC’s “Faber Report” from November 13, 2009. The two graphics show the problems the FHA is starting to have. With the government already in the hole for a few trillion Dollars, the last thing we need is another housing meltdown. I’ve always believed there is NO NEED for the government to get involved in the property market (or any other private sector for the most part-i.e. such as GM, etc.). It only distorts the markets, adds more financial pressures on the taxpayers and prolongs the problems associated with it.

“I believe that Snoop Dogg’s brand is well known around the whole Globe from the business aspect, as

“I believe that Snoop Dogg’s brand is well known around the whole Globe from the business aspect, as well as the music aspect. It was a plan that I put together strategically, it was something that happened along the way.”

Since emerging onto the scene alongside Dr. Dre in 1992, West Coast rapper Snoop Dogg has continued to expand in his music, as well as, becoming business savvy.

With countless movie roles under his belt, endorsements from businesses such as Chrysler 300, Orbit Gum, Boost Mobile and many more, Snoop continues to reinvent himself for the better as he has become embraced by the masses whether it relates to music or in general.

Asking the question “What’s My Name?” back in 1993, all can raise their hands now and answer Snoop Dogg as he has become a household name.

While promoting his 10th studio album, Malice-N-Wonderland, the rapper was able to catch up with CNBC and have a sit down discussion with Maria Bartoromo as he spoke on his beginnings entering the game.

“The first thing I wanted to do was create my own sound and diverse look that was non-similar to anyone that was out or anyone that came out before me. I wanted to also be different and diverse with the dialect that I used. I didn’t want to sound like anybody and I didn’t want to use the same words. I just had a strategic plan as far as just being original and just trying to find out could I really do something that was never done before?”

Most artists lack the balance to maintain the music and the money as Snoop said that he was unable to initially handle the politics of the game. He was, however, able to trudge his way through.

“It was told to me that it was show business. I always had the show, but I never had the business and once I got the business, now I’m the kind of show business.”

Never one to forget those that lent a helping hand, he made sure to give Dre a shout-out in regards to how he was able to gain such heavy exposure with the mainstream.

“Not for me because I had Dr. Dre assisting me, who is one of the greatest producers of all time and I basically just rode his coat-tail and performed to the best of my ability. Through him, I shined and people recognized and they loved me after that.”

Able to see the ramifications of negativity, he added that his lifestyle as a youth made an abrupt transition once he was able to realize the potential that he had musically.

“I dibbled and dabbled into crime in the beginning stages of my adolescence as a young man and once I did I seen that was not the route I wanted to take. I felt that I had too much intelligence and too much mind power to just continue to belittle myself and be put in that position so once I woke up and realized that there was more to me, I maximized my strength and started studying the great musicians and studying the great business-minded people so I could become who I am today.”

With almost 20 years in the game, Snoop has failed to miss any major steps in his career that he hasn’t been able to bounce back from. As time progresses forward, Uncle Snoop is one that will remain timeless as he remains persistent with building his name and staying a commodity in today’s industry of entertainment.

This post is inspired by Jim Cramer’s excellent (Mad Money) adventure on the valuation of AMAZON.COM(AMZN). We all owe thanks to Jim for all his insight and performance on the show. However we should also know that no one is his right mind will give the viewing audience the keys to the kingdom, regardless of the price. The P/E ratios are all bunk. The game is all about the balance sheet and how to value a stock based on that little piece of paper.

Amazon is hard to put a number on , but just as a curiosity I used a valuation approach that work very well for me in the past. It was an approach to value stocks that had no earnings. It had me buying Bio Reference Laboratories (BRLI) for$1 and $2 in the early 2000″s. Another stock too, Evici College Careers at $1.00. Both went to the moon. The premise is similar, as far as valuation goes. You must remember, it was a bear market back then ,this is a stealth bull market. Also, every time AMAZON posts results, the numbers change. Anyway, thanks to Jim Cramer for all he does. My TARGET for AMAZON this balance sheet is $217.40. As a declaration, I do not own the stock and feel there are other opportunities elsewhere.

I hope you had a chance to hear Charlie Gasparino of CNBC on the “Stocks and Jocks” show last week. If you did not, you can listen to the archived show at www.StocksAndJocks.net. Charlie has a new book called Sellout and is one of our favorite feisty financial editors. Read about his interview with us here.

Well, this week has turned out to be a bit more hectic than planned. Friday (Options Expiration) was busier than usual and with a shortened holiday week, I thought I’d open up the forum to you, the readers (and hopefully, listeners) to submit your ideas for show topics, guests, or just general market and sports questions you would like me to blog about or for Dr. J and I to cover on our show. Here are two more questions: 1) Is the turkey pardoning by the President still relevant in 2009 and 2) will you be spending more, less or the same this year on holiday gifts?

Send in your feedback, ideas and comments to me at StocksAndJocks@Live.com. I will try and get in a blog post a little later this week, assuming there is a calming lull before the holiday storm. It will be interesting to see how retail sales fare for the upcoming “biggest shopping day of the year”.

Meredith Whitney, prominent banking analyst at her self-named advisory group, should have worn a bib

Meredith Whitney, prominent banking analyst at her self-named advisory group, should have worn a bib to protect her from the adoring drool supplied by Maria Bartiromo in a recent CNBC interview. Ms. Whitney has quickly become a banking rock star during this “Great Recession” period. She was right at a critical juncture, and as a result she was thrust into the limelight. Much like Abby Joseph Cohen, the perma-bull Goldman Sachs strategist who gained notoriety in the late 1990s, Whitney (the perma-banking bear) will continue having difficulty living up to the lofty expectations demanded of her.

Despite the accolades, Whitney’s crystal ball has gotten cloudy in 2009. I suppose accuracy is not very important, judging by her bottom-half 2007 ranking (year of her major Citigroup call) in recommendation performance and 48%-ile ranking in the first half of 2008. Analysts, much like reporters, can avoid looking dumb by reporting the news du jour and by following the herd. Whitney has followed this formula with her continuous bearishness on the financial sector, excluding a brief but late upgrade of Goldman Sachs in July. Not only was her analysis tardy (Goldman’s stock tripled from the 2009 bottom), but her call has also underperformed the S&P 500 index since the upgrade.

Incoherent Inconsistencies

Like a bobbing and weaving wrestler (her husband John Layfield is a retired staged professional wrestler from the WWE), Whitney tries to concoct a completely mind-boggling narrative to explain her forecasts this year in the CNBC interview with Maria Bartiromo:

11/18/09 (XLF Price $14.60): “For the year, I have been at least ‘cover your shorts, go long.’ I haven’t been this bearish in a year.” (See Maria Bartiromo Interview)

Hmm, really? Are you kidding me? Wait a second…is this the same “go long” Meredith Whitney that expressed the following?

3/17/09: (XLF: 8.55 then, 14.60 now +71% ex-dividends): “These big banks are sitting on loans that were underwritten with bad math, and the stocks are going to go down…these stocks are uninvestable.”

(Fast forward to minute 8:20 for quote above)

2/4/09 (XLF: 8.97 then, 14.60 now +63% ex-dividends): “Investors should not even consider owning banks on an equity basis” (Click here and fast forward to minute 8:10 for quote).

The schizophrenic accounting of her postures are all the more confusing given her stance that the sector was “fairly valued” in October, according to the CNBC Bartiromo interview.

Don’t get me wrong, she made an incredible bearish call on Citigroup in the fall of 2007 and was expecting blood in the streets until a massive rebound in 2009 surprised her. Investors need to be wary of prognosticators that get thrust into the limelight (see Peter Schiff article) for a single prediction. The law of large numbers virtually guarantees a new breed of extreme forecasters will be rotated into the spotlight any time there is a major shift in the market direction. I choose to follow the footsteps of Warren Buffett and stay away from the game of market timing and market forecasts. I believe James Grant from the Interest Rate Observer states it best:

“The very best investors don’t even try to forecast the future. Rather, they seize such opportunities as the present affords them.”

Meredith Whitney may be a bright banking analyst and perhaps she’ll ultimately be proven right regarding the downward banking stock price trajectories, but like all bold forecasters she must live by the crystal ball, and die by the crystal ball.

There are coaches in just about all of the marketing and ways of the internet, as well as life coaches that will help you organize your life. Do not get caught up in something that you are not 100% committed to. If the commitment is not there, the success rate will not be very high. Make sure you get into something that truly interests you. Good luck to you and to all of your success!

~~By InsightAnalytical-GRL

I just watched a BBC America show about the reticent Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon, and over the last couple of days on NPR radio, the Stardate segments have been devoted to the anniversary of the Apollo 12 mission when Pete Conrad (the third man to make that walk) and Alan Bean made a pinpoint landing of the lunar module to test “precise landing techniques” that would be used in future missions.

"The Surveyor 3 spacecraft sits silently in a small lunar crater, with the Apollo 12 lunar module on the crater's rim in the background. Astronauts Pete Conrad and Alan Bean landed just a few hundred feet from Surveyor 3 in November 1969 to test the precise landing techniques that would be needed for future missions."--Stardate.org

We can’t do solar panels here?

***

Early last week I posted this comment by Zachary Karabell, who appeared on CNBC (See: Larry Kudlow Has a Fit as Obama the “Declinist” Opens His Mouth in Japan; Says Obama is “Not His President”):

And he said that if we want China to continue to “hitch” themselves to us more, we’re not supposed to freak out if China wants to buy businesses HERE and not have a “knee-jerk xenophobic response.”

Well, here’s a story that will not make people happy, even though it may help us ultimately less dependent on foreign oil. Of course, we may become dependent on NEW environmental technology from foreign sources, but…

From Business Week (my bolding):

China Solar Panel Maker Sets First U.S. Plant

Suntech Power aims to boost its share of the U.S. market with a solar-panel manufacturing plant to be built in Arizona

China’s Suntech Power Holdings (STP) is no newcomer to the U.S. Last May, President Barack Obama toured the U.S.’s largest solar panel installation at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada. There, row upon row of shiny black Suntech panels account for about a third of the 14-megawatt solar farm.

Suntech landed that project the same way it has raced to the top of the fast-growing global solar market: by focusing on price and scale. Now the world’s largest supplier of solar panels is boosting its stake in the U.S. market.

On Nov. 16 in Beijing, the company announced its first American manufacturing plant. The facility, to be located in the Phoenix area, will begin production by next October. “The U.S. market is on the cusp of greatness,” says Steven Chan, Americas president and chief strategy officer for Suntech. With the announcement, Suntech becomes the first major Chinese cleantech player to bring factory j obs to the U.S.

MMMM...wonder how many MORE major Chinese players will be arriving? And on U.S. military bases? (Of course, wasn’t there a flap over Bill Clinton selling military technology to China way back when?)

Now, there are some in Congress that are afraid our home-grown “green manufacturing jobs” won’t get a chance to get off the ground if this sort of thing happens on a regular basis. Sure, the Chinese are manufacturing here, but the factory jobs are THEIR creation, not jobs created by a home-grown company.

Obama’s visit to China focusing on collaboration in green technologies. Suntech’s move may soften criticism from U.S. lawmakers worried that low-cost factories in China will snare new green manufacturing jobs before they even have a chance to take root in the U.S. “[Suntech's] decision to bring manufacturing here to the U.S. is a great sign of the increasingly important collaboration between Chinese and American leaders in the renewable-energy industry,” said Dan Kammen, a professor in the energy and resources group at the University of California at Berkeley, in a statement provided by Suntech.

Gee…that Berkley prof can’t write his own statement??

According to the article, most of the grants the U.S. issues for “cleantech” is winding up overseas:

Suntech’s investment comes as anxieties are rising in Washington over foreign domination of the U.S. cleantech space. In late October the announcement of a Chinese-U.S. consortium planning to build a wind park in Texas using imported Chinese turbines led to calls that federal subsidies should be pulled from the project. The same month, a report from the Investigative Reporting Workshop found that in the wind sector, where foreign manufacturers dominate the market, overseas companies have received 84% of more than $1 billion in federal clean-energy grants released since Sept. 1. The study did not focus on solar energy, but the majority of solar panels are also produced by European and Asian companies.

Texas? Well, naturally…I’d bet that the George Bushes I & II are involved somehow, what with their long-time ties to China…Between them and their heir Barack Obama, things are proceeding very nicely…

In light of my previous post about growing U.S. unemployment, pardon me if I query: WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON??

(Well, we’re going to build electric cars with the Chinese, for one thing…)

***

Editor’s Note: I loved the space program and now live where Pete Conrad lived…and remember when this irrepressible spirit, who shouted “Whoopee” as he hopped around the moon’s surface, died in a motorcycle crash in California 10 years ago this past July (pictures on this memoria page). (He also rode 2 Gemini missions and Skylab I.)

There seems to be a growing divide in the current U.S. economy. On the one hand, you have the finan

There seems to be a growing divide in the current U.S. economy. On the one hand, you have the financial sector swimming in their bailout-induced profits like a modern day Scrooge Mcduck. In their circles, it appears as if the recession is over. On the other hand, you have average Americans seeing access to credit cards shut down, equity in their homes vanishing, and their stock portfolios looking a little too much like 1999. Then you have 35.8 million Americans, roughly 11 percent of our population, on food stamps. To this group the recession is still very much alive.

At a recent Alliance for Family Entertainment of the Association of National Advertisers, Wal-Mart gave a sobering look at the current economy:

“(NY Times) There are families not eating at the end of the month,” said Stephen Quinn, executive vice president and chief marketing officer at Wal-Mart Stores, and “literally lining up at midnight” at Wal-Mart stores waiting to buy food when paychecks or government checks land in their accounts.”

Now this is important since Wal-Mart is in every corner of every American metro area:

The fact that you have people lining up at midnight just waiting to have their paychecks or government checks clear for food is probably something you are not going to see on CNBC but it is happening. This recession is really creating a split and is also flaming the fires of class warfare. Average Americans and working class Americans are still dealing with what is known as the Great Recession.

Wal-Mart is looking to meet the new market reality by offering items that meet the new austerity demanded by millions of American families:

“Among the steps Wal-Mart is taking to address the changes in shopping habits, Mr. Quinn listed an overhaul of the retailer’s private-label brand, Great Value, which is promoted in commercials describing how families can fix dinners with Great Value products “for less than $2 a serving.”

For less than $2 a serving means millions of families are now needing to stretch their dollar. So as you might have guessed, having the U.S. Treasury and Federal Reserve go on a path of dollar weakness actually hurts those at the bottom and middle class the most. Yet they are concerned more about the financial sector and the chips may fall where they may for the remaining group of Americans.
