Chronic pain/illness can be a sneaky intruder. It can sneak up on you and throw you off-balance, send you into a tail-spin, or plunge you into a deep depression. Take steps to prevent the pain/illness from taking over your life and defining who you are.

The following five steps are a good place to start.

Grapple with God until peace is found.

Find new meaning for living – finding and embracing a new normal. Change is not necessarily bad.

Learn new coping skills.

Grieve well and each time losses come up.

Keep current with communication so that relationships remain strong or get stronger.

Recovery is not a one-time arrival at a set destination. The process is ongoing and ever-evolving. Life will be different because of the pain and the losses suffered. Remember you don’t have to navigate this life alone. My goal as a shepherd and friend is to help you (a woman in pain) to become healthier in spirit. Give me a call.

“When we go through any significant grief experience we come out of it as different people. Depending upon the way we responded to this event we are either stronger people than we were before or weaker-either healthier in spirit or sicker.” Granger E. Westberg

Bob created this stained glass cross. The glass came from windows that used to be part of the church. When Rudat Hall was renovated, the glass was removed, but kept safe for such a project as this. Gorgeous work, Bob. Thank for your time and talent!

[Jonathan Ward's] pcb mill is as impressive as it is inexpensive. Twenty-six plywood parts, labeled A-Z, are used to assemble the machine along with the customary precision rods, stepper motors, and router assembly. His bill of materials prices the unit at $458.18, a small price to pay in order to forgo a multi-step etching process.

His test board shows some fairly fine pitch that could turn out most home-project circuit boards. We’ve contacted [Jonathan] regarding the specifics of milling the plywood parts out of a 2 foot by 4 foot sheet of plywood. Watch for an update with any information he’s willing to share. We hope he’ll make the milling files for the plywood parts available so that you can build a copy of the device for your own use.

[Thanks Charles]

I’ve had some progress with my Proxxon MF70 CNC conversion project. X and Y axes are complete, and so far it seems to work fine with no significant vibrations at a decent speed. I went through a few design ideas and eventually came to choose a rather simple one where I replaced the lead screws and made new nuts out of delrin for both axes. This had the nice side effect of a somewhat increased resolution as well. In addition to the motor mounts, I also built the aluminum couplings between the leadscrews and motor shafts.

Now it’s time to work on the z-axis, which should basically be the same. Once the machine is complete, I intend to use it to manufacture parts for a new design for the Y axis, where I’ll be able to extend the travel of the axis by about 20mm. This should enhance the usability of the machine greatly.

I am just starting out down the CNC road (more of that news later). I have been researching the best CNC workflow to produce robust GCode. To start with I envisage that the majority of my CNC work will be 2.5D (eg cutting flat shapes, with the occasional recessed area for a bearing, or screwhead). The workflow below satisfies that:

Future refinements:

3D workflow

Linux-based workflow ( so I can use the same PC as EMC2 is using)

2.5D CNC Workflow:

1) Google sketchup:

Create your object. This software is great for really quick and easy modelling. Set the accuracy to a helpful value (eg 1mm if you’re just doing something quick and simple, 0.01mm if it’s going onto a knee mill). One limitation is that circles are modelled as segmented lines – increase the number of segments until your mill doesn’t notice anymore.

2) Export from sketchup to dxf using the ruby plug-in on this page:

http://www.guitar-list.com/download-software/convert-sketchup-skp-files-dxf-or-stl

3) Edit the data (if necessary) in ProgeSOFT Smart:

Open the dxf in this free 2D & 3D CAD package. The user interface is heavily based on AutoCAD, so you’ll be right at home here… Free for non-commercial use, £240 for a licence.

http://www.progesoft.com/en/smart-2009#downl

4) Import to CamBam, insert the machining data, then generate the GCode file.

http://www.cambam.co.uk/

5) Load the .NC file into your chosen motion control software (EMC2, or Mach3 are common). Machine away!

Slappt

Some time ago i got into rubik’s cubes by accident. after a while i thought it would be nice to solve the cube using a different perception than the visual. i decided that i wanted something haptic. so i went and designed some patterns that were

easily distinguishable

systematic

plain

easy to make

rotation invariant

the result were three different basic shapes: cross, box, hollow box

“why no circle?”. well i decided to stick to the concept of straight lines. but i added some roundings just for a more comfortable feeling. anyway, it’s three basic patterns in a normal and diagonal version each since the colors on a rubik’s cube are also paired. we have [red/orange], warm colors on opposite sides of the cube, [white/yellow], bright colors and [blue/green], cold colors. i wanted to keep that concept in order to have a better orientation when solving the cube. so each [normal/diagonal]-pair is located on opposite sides of the cube.

finally the plates were cnc-milled out of pcv and it was a really painful amount of work to clean them with steel wool. it took a while till i got my fingerprints back. i peeled off the original labels of the rubik’s cube and mounted the plates using double-sided tape.

54 plates later the cube was finished. the first days the cube felt a little uncomfortable, but it became better because the edges wore off. solving the cube takes me about five times longer than solving a normal cube, but it’s an interesting challenge every time.

here’s a picture of the finished cube:

LOCATION: CLEMSON, SC & PENDLTON, SC /
FABRICATION: DESIGN BUILD & DIGITAL FABRICATION
LOCAL CODE: OLD SOUTH / AREA: —–
DATE: 2008 / PROFESSOR: JORI ERDMAN

Stewardship South is dedicated to cultivating a sense of stewardship, particularly in regards to the environment and culture of the American South. The ability to design and construct built works is a privilege and a trust given to us by the communities that we work within. We bring skills and knowledge to every situation and we have an ethical responsibility to exercise good judgment and care in each of our decisions. Often there is no clear right or wrong answer or even clearly defined problems. In each situation the best response will be one with good intentions and mindful of the impact on the complex issues that comprise each site. The studio, Stewardship South, should result in built projects that respond graciously and with care to the communities, environments, culture, and discipline within which they are constructed. The projects should demonstrate stewardship through design, craft, completion, and fiscal responsibility.

PROJECT 1 — KEESE BARN — PENDLETON SC

The project was to expand on a previous projects constructed by graduate students called SOUTH. SOUTH’s initiative was to understand the working of a neighborhood that is devastated by poverty. Once existing was an important structure that served the community in numerous ways, including a general store, public space, and cultural storage. Over time the structure deteriorated and became to expensive to repair. Clemson University School of Architecture was asked if they would help solve the issues facing the site. The idea was to memorialize the site, to create a permanent public space. The first initiative was to deconstruct the old structure, document and recreate a temporal construction. The idea of temporality became the mode of making for all works. This idea was used to reflect deconstruction, breaking down, and then rebuilding. Much like that of how slavery was broken down, and rebuilt and still rebuilding in this country, the idea that segregation was eroded away and built back as equality.

All site construction was based on the idea of temporality, so that over time the site could change and adapt to new generations. To allow for this the deck was built on top of pin foundations. Pin Foundations allowd for zero footings and zero concrete to be poured. Instead pin foundations are pre fabricated, weigh 50 lbs. and only reguire four pieces of 4’ length galvanized pipe to be installed.

To reduce the need for mainteance the deck was constructed from treated lumber, and decked with TREX Decking. The decking is made from a plastic composite and never needs to be sealed against the elements

The formwork for the concrete pour consisted of 40 sheets of 2” rigid insulation foam. The form of the block was sectioned every 2 inches in Rhino, then files were made to CNC mill each of the secions. Also embedded into the files were the notches for the 2 x 4 framing to be accepted into the formwork.

Because of the complexity of the pour and various undercuts in the form, the formwork had to be installed in pieces. So once one section of the pour was finished another section of formwork could be stacked and so on.
