Growing a Healthy Coat

There are many factors that can affect a dog’s coat health and overall condition. These are the dog’s overall health, parasites, allergies, disease, and nutrition. Protein is the major component of a dog’s skin and coat; hair alone is 95% protein. Oils are also of major importance in maintaining a dog’s coat health. First, all cell membranes are composed of both proteins and oils. The complex linkages between these two chemicals regulate the passage of water, minerals, and nutrients in and out of cells. The oils help retain body moisture, maintain suppleness in the skin surface, and contribute to the sheen of the dog’s coat. Yet, protein remains the foundation of a dog’s skin and coat health just as it is for muscle. All skin cells are replaced every 3-4 weeks in a normal dog.

Pet Nutrition

The best coat begins from within. A complete diet rich in essential amino acids and other key nutrients is the basis for good health and a beautiful coat. In a normal, healthy dog, balance is the key. Deprivation, as well as excess levels of specific nutrients, can be detrimental to a dog’s coat health. A deficiency of certain vitamins, minerals, amino acids, or fatty acids can result in canine skin problems. Your dog itches and scratches and the coat damaging itch/scratch cycle begins. Hair becomes lackluster, breaks, and thins.

Canine Skin/Coat Problems

Parasites

Internal and external parasites can play a damaging role in your dog’s skin and coat health. Worms can deplete your pet’s nutritional supply from within. Hookworms, whipworms, and tapeworms, which suck the blood from the lining of the intestines, can quickly deteriorate a dog’s coat health. Protein loss would be similar symptoms to inadequate protein intake.

Dog Allergies

Dog Allergies can also play a part in canine skin problems and dog coat health. There are three main types of allergens: contact (such as flea saliva); inhaled (such as pollen, mold, dust); and food (ingredients). Dogs do not react to allergies in the same way humans do. They are not likely to sneeze or have runny noses. Instead, you will see your dog itching and scratching, biting at their hind region, and licking or chewing at the pads of their feet. If you see your dog scratching ears, tail, or anyplace they can reach, it may be signs of pet allergies. If left untreated, it is likely that this will result in an inflammation of the pet’s skin, resulting in infection. Dog allergy symptoms can also masquerade as, and perhaps lead to, ear infections, causing excessive wax build up and or your dog itching

Contact Dog Allergies

The most common dog allergy is the result of fleabites. This is due to the dog becoming allergic to the saliva of the flea. this reaction can occur after only one flea bite (once the dog has been previously exposed). Many times, no fleas will be on the dog when the dog is examined, but intense biting and itching occurring near the tail is a dead giveaway. There also may, or may not, be bumps on the dog’s skin causing the hair to have a raised appearance

Inhalant Dog Allergies

Allergic reactions to inhaled substances begin to appear at 6-24 months of age. Usually, the first experience coincides with pollination time. However, seasonal patterns may change if the dog has become sensitive to dust or other materials.

Food Allergies

The most overlooked cause of dog allergies are food allergies. Food allergic dogs develop sensitivity to a substance in their diet. The most common allergens in dog food are: corn, whey, milk and beef.

The fabric is a brown tweed and the collar is a chocolate brown. One of my first crochet projects, a stitch sampler scarf, is seen in the photograph. The scarf and coat combo is so warm, I can’t go out without them (unless the snow falls, then a heavier coat is necessary).

At least that’s what I tell myself. I now honestly can’t think of anything else we’ll need for a while. I just bought myself a coat. All my other coats are a bit tight, post baby. So, I ordered this one:

Macy's Coat

It’s uber-cute and really cheap. I ordered Nick a couple toddler size pjs as well, to bring my total up enough so I could get free shipping. Hey, shipping is $14, so ordering Nick pjs he’ll need anyway is definitely worth it. Just use the code MACYSFRIEND to get 25% off and free shipping if your order totals at least $99 (before the 25% discount).

I ordered the Toy Story one in 2T and the Cars one in 3T.

Bryan has been saying he needs a coat too. He has a big pouffy one, but the zipper’s broken, so that kind of defeats the purpose of wearing something to stay warm if it won’t even close. He has a leather one, but something’s wrong with it too. I forget what, though. The zipper may have broken on it too. So, I ordered him this one from JCPenney.

Brown Leather Coat

It was only $30 (and you know I found a free shipping code for that too, joy2unme). Yay! Ok, so now I’m done shopping. Promise!

The site is a way for fans and fanatics to “interact with the culture of the brand and with the emotional aspects of the trenchcoat,” says designer Christopher Bailey. The site features a timeline which illustrates the history of the trench, but more fun is is impressive amount of pictures featuring people and their trenches and how diverse you can wear it. The pictures are a selection of pictures uploads by fans along with photos commissioned by online style guru the Sartorialist.

Ahhhh Leighton Meester how we love you and your clothes. She’s just a dream isn’t she?! One thing i really admire is her bravery in her style. If you’re anything like me when choosing a winter coat you avoid anything with any colour. Black is safe yes, but it’s also very boring and you will just blend into the crowd. 2009 is all about colour, just like Leighton’s electric blue number there are 100’s of gorgeous colourful coats allover the high street this year so we’re saying : BE BOLD.

A lot of traffic has been dedicated to finding the coat Keke Palmer wore to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. After days of online searching, I myself couldn’t locate the darn thing! I was starting to think the girl’s stylist got a customised piece. Then…I found this beaut. Not quite the exact piece, but it seems as if the only difference here is the color. And well, when the retail world gives you lemons…make lemonade!

This black wool coat comes from Twenty8Twelve by s. miller Truman and retails for…a big chunk of change ($710 from Saks 5th Avenue). From the cuff detailing to buttons, this coat is super similar to Keke’s…the only downfall? The color.

So…what do we do about that splash of color in this winter outfit? Purple sequined leggins, of course! It might sound a bit disco-ball status, but pairing the leggings with knee length black boots should bring down the noise level a good knotch while still allowing the pop of color to peak through.

Blake Lively was outfitted in the coat on an episode of Gossip Girl as well. I know this coat isn’t really anything I could afford…ever. So, I’ll be back after I scrounge a cheaper alternative to share with all of you.

Happy Tuesday!

Winter is fast approaching and that means the cold and snow will be here before I’m ready. Th

Winter is fast approaching and that means the cold and snow will be here before I’m ready. That is always the case in RL since winter is my least favorite season. I don’t really care for snow. However, Shiryu Musashi of Musashi-Do has created a coat so fabulous you won’t mind traipsing through the cold white stuff as you do your holiday shopping.

This is not your average winter coat. With a classic houndstooth pattern done by hand and lovely color options, December Warmth is classic and elegant, sophisticated and stylish. I can’t imagine the hours of work that went into this creation, especially the texture. Houndstooth is not something I would have the patience to tackle, but Shiryu has done a stunning job. There is an attention to detail here that you don’t always find on our lovely grid and I adore the buttons on the end of the sleeves. One of the things that make this coat different from all the others is the bottom. Panels of fabric overlay each other and create gorgeous movement as you twirl around in the snow or pose for the camera.

There are two options for the bottom of the coat; a flat skirt that I’m wearing here and a fuller option for wearing with those bigger skirts we all have in our wardrobe. The lapel attaches to the spine so you can still wear the coat with a scarf or jewelry should you so desire. It also comes with a sweater and turtleneck collar option that I am wearing here. I paired the coat with the SLink Buckle Pants in Black and the stunning Prestige boots from Bax Coen. I wanted to be comfortable while traipsing through the snow, but this coat really demands stylish footwear and I can think of nothing more stylish than these particular boots.

I decided a hat was in order and immediately put on the Chloe hair from Maitreya. I don’t wear a lot of long hair, and this is one of my all -time favorites. It’s very flattering to the face and the texture on the knit cap is fantastic. Oh, and it’s scripted for color change, which is probably one of my favorite options in all of SL. My inventory loves it when that happens. I chose the light blue option for the hat, which might not be the conventional choice, but it was just so pretty I had to do it.

These photos were taken on Stereo Vogue, which is home to the Winter Wonderland the lovely Callie Cline has built. All of the decorations are for sale and I’m so glad they are. My favorite is probably the icy river, which you can see in the first photo of this post. I love it so much that I’m going to put it in the middle of my studio.

I also love these gorgeous winter trees and flowers. They’re stunningly detailed and the silvery texture makes me happy. There are a wide variety of decorations available, including wreaths, trees, and candy cane paths. If you’ve not taken the time to go and check it out, be sure you do. Callie has created some gorgeous and fun decor for the holidays.

Remember to dress warm this winter and pick up December Warmth at Musashi-Do. It comes in five lovely colors and at 499L it’s definitely a bargain.

- Yaaaaaaaaaay, Partyyyyyyy!!!!! this is post no. 100 … Woohooooo!!!

- So yesterday I went to Antwerp, Belgium with my friend (and also colleague) to shop =D It was really cool and we’ve had a lot of fun. I’ve bought some cool things <3 Like Puma shoes, a coat, a t-shirt and some Bjorn Borg Boxers Besides shopping we didn’t really do much. It was a very nice day, even though the weather was really bad. It was raining most of the time, but of course water didn’t stop us =P I was back home at 7.20 pm.

- Today me and my friends went to see Twilight; New moon for the second time =P Hahaha… I think it’s even sexier than I remembered <3 If you haven’t seen it yet…

GO NOW!!! And don’t forget to take me with you ^^

Do I have room in my closet for another more-than-the-usual coat?
I did get the faux fur coat already, so…

(My dad said this resembles the furry rug in my room. Many thanks.)

A little overdue, but there you go. Towards the beginning of September I looked everywhere for a li

A little overdue, but there you go.

Towards the beginning of September I looked everywhere for a lightweight coat suitable for Autumn. I looked in all the shops. Nothing would suit or fit me. I looked in ALL the charity shops (it took a day). Nothing that I would like or in my size.

I decided to make my own, but couldn’t find a pattern that I had in my head. I wanted hip length, Peter Pan collar, large pockets on the outside, slightly A–line and a box pleat at the back (that’s a must!). I wanted it to be as simple as possible. I didn’t have a clue how to draft a coat pattern, how much ease one needs in sleeves and how much in body. I needed a starting point.

Talea coat from burdastyle looks a long shot from what I wanted, with its princess seams and lots of detailing, but hey, it’s free!

I cut out all the pattern pieces and arranged the princess seams next to each other. I could immediately see that they touch around bust area and at the bottom, leaving a gap that will form waist shaping when sewn. I didn’t want waist shaping, so the easiest thing to do was to glue the pieces together and disregard the hole in the middle. That still leaves the gap at the top of the princess seam, which forms the curve in the yoke. I left it, but used it as a dart marking – which gave me lovely fit at the top, but no waist shaping. I did the same with the back, but added some width in the middle for my box pleat. I ended up with one piece for the back, and two front pieces (instead of four and four respectively).

I changed the collar as well, lined the pockets and put in lining. I didn’t know how to do it, but somehow managed to figure it out.

I spent a little bit more on the fabric, because I figured I’d wear it a lot, so it made sense to put some extra effort into making this a quality garment.

I bought nice, large wood buttons, which are stitched not onto the coat, but smaller shell buttons on the other side (to prevent fabric pulling). The biggest challenge though was making bound buttonholes, which I have never done before, and got it completely wrong – started from the wrong side – and had to unpick it all and fix the holes I made in the process… Let me tell you, there were tears. But once fixed – they look great, so I think I will do them again on something.

It took me almost 4 days to make, including fiddling with the pattern, but it was worth it – I did indeed wear it a lot. Until it got colder and I found almost exactly the same coat, but heavier and longer, in local charity shop for £1. That’s another story though…
