When I’m speaking about Congo I make sure that I provide a political and historical context often not presented in Western media – “What is taking place in the Congo is a resource war, a geo-strategic battle being waged on the backs of the Congolese people and in the wombs of Congolese women. Congo is the home of the greatest humanitarian crisis in the world and since 1996, nearly six million people have died.

As I awoke on this Christmas morning from my dream in which I was in Eastern Congo again, I realized that too often I suppress what it was like to experience the energy of war, for the first time when I visited Congo earlier this year. In my dream I felt the intensity of these feelings again. The part of the dream I recalled began with an officer stopping me in the streets of Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo, asking to see my papers. I questioned the officer’s request, but while in the D.R.C. this year when asked for my passport, I contained my righteous indignation. The surge of anxiety I walked with, in the dream and in my recent visit was emotionally paralyzing, as I was starkly aware that there was no real safe harbor anywhere in my sight. Everywhere in my dream just as in my visit, armed soldiers lined up against store walls as if they owned the air that the Congolese people breathed and it was hard for me to differentiate between the varied armed groups I passed on the street. The UN forces, foreign troops from the neighboring countries of Rwanda & Uganda and the Congolese army all seemed to have one thing in common – their presence was elusive at best and deadly at worst. These young soldiers were now reduced to mere mercenaries for US and foreign corporate interests and governments such as Rwanda and the small percentage of Congolese élite – hired hands in a global resource game in which Congo loses while the rest of the world wins.

As I continued walking down the streets of Congo in my dream, a woman in her early 60’s, held her breath as she briskly walked ahead of me, passing a group of soldiers. She seemed to have mastered the stealth of a samurai warrior – deliberately disengaged with the sights and sounds in her line of vision, possessing the ability to stay almost undetected by the human eye. Within seconds, I saw a soldier raise his machine gun as if he was lifting an amulet to the sky to receive God’s blessing and fire into a crowd of people. I attempted to slide under a table when a soldier grabbed my ankle flinging me against a wall to be used as cannon fodder. A slew of soldiers were already firing in my direction and seemed eager to find the “right landing” for their bullets to pierce. Lucky for me, I was in a dream and was able to escape from the onslaught of machine gunfire, possessing the power to defy gravity and my likely fate.

I woke up in my warm bed relieved and thankful that this dream wasn’t my life. I thought about how I stood out as a foreigner in the refugee camps of the Congo months earlier during my “real” visit – how the eyes of the displaced men and women seemed to meet mine with fury and envy and say, “You get to go home.” The intense guilt I felt was palpable, as I knew that I had personally benefited from the Coltan and Cobalt in their soil and yet did not have to live their nightmare. I could go back home, in my nice warm bed and forget their faces if I chose to and on this Christmas morning I could even pretend that they don’t exist.

Or just reliving my Studio Sale in cobalt colors! Seriously, this is a post for an old friend, who wanted to see COBALT. (You know who you are, Gil!) Looks like I’m way low on cobalt at the moment, but here is what I have on hand…. The detail shot above is current work done with powdered glass on sheet substrate. Most have 22k gold designs drawn & fired into the glass. Gorgeous pieces for home decor, don’t you think?!

I love these festive candleholders and make them in many color combinations. I usually adorn them with botanical designs, my favorites being lavender & lilacs. Most of my custom orders have been themes based on the client’s home decor.

I’m very low on handkerchief vases at the moment. Those I have in cobalt are the two on the right and the very dark blue (back, left) with red accents.

This shot makes the blue vase appear almost black, but it’s a gorgeous cobalt iridescent glass

Here it is in front of a window with bright light.

And here’s the cobalt vase with white accents as viewed in front of the same window.

A set of cobalt wall pockets. Please forgive the white price stickers, I shot these on the fly just before my studio sale opened! The left pocket is a botanical design and the others are all from my ‘I’d give you the stars and moon’ series. The moon is hand cut silver dichroic glass and the stars are all the scraps I made while trying to cut perfect moons. By the way, if you’d rather learn to make you own wall pockets, come take my class (Build a Better Pocket) at the Las Vegas Glass Craft & Bead Expo in April!!

Not so cobalt but I love these pieces so included them for your viewing pleasure!

Lastly the same shot from the beginning of this post uncropped. Cobalt is included in a couple of the pieces here because I like a contrast of lights and darks. My current favorite for home decor is the turquoise and purple combination with gold, but it’s a bit tricky to work with.

Merry Christmas to all! Hope your holidays are filled with light, love and laughter!!

When describing his experiences with the Paralympics, longtime Cobalt employee Mark Bathum used these words to describe his fellow athletes and their attitude toward the endeavor, “It’s just what you do. You try to make a difference.”

Cobalt believes the same thing, a belief that manifests itself in many ways. For the next few months, Cobalt is sponsoring two Cobalt employees – Mark Bathum and Shane McSimov – in their efforts to do good.

Mark is realizing a goal he has had for 20 years, and started seriously trying for in 2008 – to race for the US Paralympics ski racing team. In 2010, in Vancouver, he will achieve that dream, but only after a lot of hard work and arduous training. Mark raced all last season to see how it would feel to do it. This year he’ll still be working, though remotely, while ramping up his ski training schedule in preparation for the big event. Cobalt will be following his efforts closely and supporting him in his bid!

Mark’s not the only one reaching out, though. Shane McSimov, another Cobalt employee, is organizing his own charity event in a very different way: a charity ping-pong game. Shane has challenged Scott Harrison, the founder of the organization charity: water to a $5000 ping-pong match in New York City, with the money going to build a well for a community that needs fresh water.

As Shane says, “A ping pong match in NYC can that save lives overseas and give clean drinking water to an entire community for 20 years; that’s a game worth playing.” The event will take place in early 2010, and will be streamed live on Ustream.com.

We’ll be writing more about Mark and Shane in the next couple months. Until then, keep updated on Mark’s progress on his website at www.markbathum.com, and you can donate to Shane’s ping-pong game by clicking here.

Cobalt is proud of both Shane and Mark for their efforts to give to something greater than themselves. As hard as we work, Cobalt also knows that when it comes to what really matters, it’s just what you do.

Dear Family, Almost a year ago, I was compelled to contact, Friends of the Congo, a DC-based advocac

Dear Family,

Almost a year ago, I was compelled to contact, Friends of the Congo, a DC-based advocacy organization, after viewing the, Nov. 13, 2008 interview, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b07P7T-_Ano on the Democracy Now program. I was attempting to understand why there was a “veil of silence “, around the war-torn Democratic Republic of Congo in Western media – a country which the UN reports as the greatest humanitarian crisis in the world since World War II, in which nearly 6 million people have died, and hundreds of thousands of women have been systematically raped as a tool of war. Friends of the Congo, Executive Director, Maurice Carney explained how the conflict in the Congo is a resource war and not an ethnic conflict. The Congo happens to be one of the richest stretches of real estate in the world, endowed with an abundance of vast mineral deposits, such as coltan and cobalt, which are key to the functioning of modern-day society.

During this time (Winter 2008), my father Ernest Crane had been diagnosed with terminal cancer a few months earlier and I was grappling with the imminence of his death. I questioned whether my inquiry into the Congo should be postponed for a less intense time, but I couldn’t ignore the yearning to do something. This compulsion moved me to join the delegation of independent journalists going to the Democratic Republic of Congo, organized by Friends of the Congo. I would go to the Congo in tribute to my father and raised funds on facebook with the assistance of my friends and family to cover my expenses for this trip. Ultimately, it was my father’s ideals of freedom that would give me the courage to go to Congo on January 5, 2009 two days after he died.

While in Congo I was given the opportunity to speak to Congolese face-to face and extract the truth directly from their mouths. I pledged to the Congolese who courageously spoke about their realities, that I would let U.S. citizens and the world know about why we should care about what’s happening in the Congo and how we are directly connected to the conflict in the Congo.

Since I returned, I have written about my experience in the Congo and have spoken in a variety of venues, advocating for diplomatic and political solutions to ending the conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo; as opposed to the current military solutions being backed by the US government. Upon returning from the Congo in January 2009, I’ve had the opportunity to speak at: Loyola College, Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, Coppin State University, Morgan State University, the University of Toronto, CUPE labor union in Toronto, Canada, Columbia University’s IMPACT program, the Congo in Harlem Film Festival and have conducted multiple radio interviews on this issue.

I would like to thank all of my friends, families and strangers who trusted me enough to offer their support in the form of prayers, well wishes and monetary contributions. Your contributions were valuable and honored – know that you have made a difference in the global movement to end the conflict in the Congo. This is just the beginning, as I will continue to stand for a free and liberated Congo. Family, I encourage you to learn more about the Congo from Congolese and tell someone else about the Congo. We must open our ears and our mouths and remove the veil of silence around the Congo. Lets’ do this in solidarity with the people of the Congo. To a peace-filled Congo, and a peace-filled world. Let justice and peace shake hands! Happy 2010! Join the global movement!

In a press release, Geovic Mining Corp. (OTCBB: GVCM; TSX: GMC) announced the engagement of Standard Chartered Bank of London as financial advisor to its Nkamouna project. In addition to conventional means, Standard Chartered will assist Geovic in addressing other financing options should they arise.

Following a long year of hard work completing the drilling program and Process Tests, Geovic is now moving forward with the next stages of its Nkamouna strategy, including updating its Feasibility Study (anticipated in mid-2010) and commencing financing discussions.

Standard Chartered has a long, deep history in the field of mine financing, and is particularly strong in Africa. As a result, we are increasingly confident in the Company’s plan to move forward with financing and constructing Nkamouna in the second half of 2010.

Currently, Geovic’s stock is trading slightly above the Company’s cash balances; in other words, giving nearly no valuation to Nkamouna. Given the combined impact of the Resource Update, Feasibility Study commencement, and Financial Advisor engagement, we believe that the market will start to see a mosaic of increasing project viability in the coming weeks and months, yielding an increased stock price.

Performance Improvement Consultant
Cobalt

For years I’ve asked dealers why they advertise in newspapers, radio, and on TV. I usually get the same answer, “because we always have,” or I hear “because it creates good traffic!” I typically follow up with the question, “how do you know?” That’s when I hear the crickets chirping. I will never tell a dealer to quit advertising with the traditional mediums, just show me the ROI! After all, if I spend $10K on a newspaper ad that runs through a weekend, shouldn’t I expect a nice return on that investment?

High performing dealers today are turning to online advertising to survive during these turbulent times. They must be able to measure all the effectiveness of their advertising and make quick, intelligent decisions on whether the ad is working or not. Digital marketing is one of the true silver bullets in advertising. Everything is measured and can be changed instantly. You want to push an old age unit, put it online with an attractive price. If that doesn’t work (and we will know within a day if it does or doesn’t), throw it on usedcars.com and just get rid of it then move on.

Automotive advertising companies that want to help their dealers need to learn how to partner with the store. They have to understand the dealer’s goals and integrate a complete advertising strategy. Everything that a dealership does offline should drive traffic online! Today a dealership can make a minimal investment in digital marketing, and for just a few thousand dollars they can have an advertising campaign in a box. All digital advertising should be designed to drive traffic, be it walk-in, phone-in or email leads.

Automotive advertising companies that want to help their dealers are thinking of new and creative ways to drive qualified traffic to the dealer. Technology can be overused in dealerships in so many ways today, do your sales consultants know how to do a proper meet and greet, can they take an inbound call on a sold vehicle and get the prospect excited to visit the store? We have to make sure that dealers understand that it’s time to go back to the blocking and tackling in the dealership, and as far as advertising goes, there are companies that are experts on how to drive qualified traffic to your dealership. It’s time to start listening to those experts and putting together the proper mix of traditional advertising and digital marketing!

It’s finally done, after much deliberation and whatnot, I’ve compiled a list of my favourite records from this year, and written a poorly crafted blurb for each of them. My words don’t do them justice, so check them all out for yourself and hopefully I’ll be able to expose you to something new and interesting!

10. Wolves in the Throne Room – Black Cascade

Wolves in the Throne Room’s style of black metal reminds me of the early 90’s releases by Burzum and Darkthrone. Long songs with repetitive, simple riffs and vocals that scream in agony over the din. With Black Cascade, there is definitely an attempt to add more the “atmospheric” side of the band, with it’s 10+ minute songs and inclusion of synth backing tracks on top of the chaotic noise. They also seem to pull of a strange feat of emulating the early raw black metal production while maintaining a listenable quality. This is often the sticking point for most people with black metal, and possibly those who can’t deal with some of the overly harsh stuff might find this more accessible. Of course, I could just be getting used to all this noise.

9. Baroness – Blue Record

Earlier this year in a review I mentioned that this record wasn’t that phenomenal, nothing that inspiring. Boy was I wrong. I don’t know what the hell I was listening to when I wrote that review, but my brain must have been shut off to not recognize the sheer brilliance displayed in this record. Sure they feature that low range muddy guitar that’s become a staple of stoner or sludge metal bands, but Baroness have created something much more than a staple record here. What it is is an amalgam of great metal, intricate solos clash with sludgy rhythms, clean sections mix in with the cacphonic. Everything flows together making a great record, and one I wish I had the good sense to recognize the first time around.

8. Cobalt – Gin

If Wolves in the Throne room is a more atmospheric approach to black metal, then Cobalt approach it from the complete opposite side. There is not much atmosphere here, because there’s no room for it. Every track is stuffed to the brim with overwhelmingly intense sound. Listening through this record for the first time is an experience, it straight out kicks your ass and you appreciate it. There’s kind of a Tool style vibe present in some parts of the record, the end of Dry Body for example. The long spells of hypnotizing drums and accompanying guitars creating a repetition that sucks you in. What we’re left with in the end is a harsh slab of black metal, and an unforgiving one at that.

7. The Tragically Hip – We Are the Same

With their last studio release World Container, the Kingston band seemed to be headed in a more rock direction, with plenty of loud songs and producer Bob Rock layering guitars, drums, and whatever else he had handy to give the record a lot of body. It’s interesting then, how We Are The Same charts off in a different course. The overall sound is more “organic” here, plenty of acoustic guitar, piano, and more emphasis on the Hip’s country tinged side than the rock and roll one. Not to say there aren’t moments of rock brilliance as well, as Love Is A First features everything that embodies a good Hip rock song, Gord Downie ranting included. Speaking of Downie, the vocalist once again provides his excellent and unique voice to great effect, along with his great lyrical ability. It’s encouraging to see a band that has been together so long can still produce music so effeciently and focused like this, and is still changing their sound instead of falling back on their past success.

6. Between the Buried and Me – The Great Misdirect

It seems that with every album I like this band more and more. After the great Colors, the group has hit an even higher point on my favourites chart with The Great Misdirect. Maybe it’s because they continue to push the envelope to how far they can go in terms of their compositions. The range of music on this album is huge, from the refined jangly reverb guitars on the opener “Mirrors” to the eventual complex and bizarre depths the album will reach later on. There’s something for everybody here, great synth work, some stonery rock sections, even a weird ass section of groovy blues rock with horse sound effects. If you’re a fan of “progressive” music in the truest sense of the word, you have no excuse not to give this album a listen.

5. Devin Townsend Project – Addicted

While Ki was a sort of mellowing out record, Addicted is a lot closer to Townsend’s past solo releases. Amazing walls of sound, coupled with layers and layers of vocals and guitarwork that are all polished off with his excellent production skills. One song, Hyperdrive! was previously heard on one of my personal favourites Ziltoid The Omniscient, however it has been rerecorded here with female vocals. The addition of Anneke van Giersbergen’s vocals in this album are actually a great compliment to Devin’s arrangements, and provide a nice alternative to the usual vocal domination we get from most Townsend releases. Devin has been quoted as saying he’d “get offended by my own pretension and rock some good vibes with Addicted” and that is pretty much a summary of the attitude portrayed in this record. You can’t help get excited when every song ends with an exclamation point!

4. Matthew Good – Vancouver

In the middle of all my extreme music, there’s still room for well orchestrated alternative rock. Matthew Good’s newest is much more grand than the great-in-it’s-own-way Hospital Music, and we get instead incredibly expansive songs full of pianos and strings that seem to drift out into space. There’s a strange sort of simplicity in Good’s songs and yet at the same time one could hardly call a lot of these arrangements less than complex. The vocals are strong as always, and Good’s knack for writing both poignant and affecting lyrics is always on display. Overall the album feels much more upbeat than its predecessor, but it still hits some depressing points. It’s another quality addition to Good’s output, and songs like “A Silent Army In the Trees”, “Fought To Fight It” and “The Vancouver National Anthem” have all of the venom we’ve seen before, along with the more laid back atmospheres of the rest of the album.

3. The Mars Volta – Octahedron

It seems like every time a new Mars Volta album comes out, all reviews generally focus on the same thing. “It’s not Deloused”, “Nowhere near Deloused”. I swear to God I have never seen a review not mention/compare to the groups debut (this one now included) and it’s a damn shame. Guess what? This year the Mars Volta put out an album, and you know what, it’s good. It’s actually damn good. Octahedron is probably the most focused, controlled form of the band we’ve seen, and everything here works brilliantly. Some might complain about the slow start, but I feel the entire album works so well on a large scale. Every part necessary, building up and down as it just drags you along the soundscapes that have defined Omar and Cedric’s band for years now. The two songs Cotopaxi and Desperate graves in particular form a breathtaking chunk of the album, capturing the off the wall dynamics and excitement that embody the band.

2. Converge – Axe to Fall

This is how an album is supposed to start. Right out the gate Converge give us the awesome adrenaline inducing “Dark Horse” and they rarely let up afterwards. Up until fairly recently I hadn’t been much of a fan of the band, but after relistening to both this release and the seminal Jane Doe, I realized how great they really are This is probably one of the most “metal” influenced of Converge’s albums, but the hardcore elements are still present. The record is full of guest appearances from members of bands like Genghis Tron, The Red Chord, Neurosis, and many others. Occasionally the band stops to let you breathe, the last two tracks in particular having plenty of slow parts, but on the whole you’re getting an unrelenting album of metal tinged hardcore that has become their calling card.

1. Propagandhi – Supporting Caste

I can’t count how many times I’ve listened to this record this year. Aside from the ridiculous Mercyful Fate cover at the end, I love every song, and the overall album is probably the most satisfying I’ve listened to all year. Employing a thrash/punk crossover style extremely well, Propagandhi show that they can write both kick ass music and intriguing lyrics. I’m not an animal rights activist, but I still felt pity after “Potemkin City Limits”. Many Canadians might be interested in “Dear Coaches Corner” as it reams out Don Cherry while simultaneously questioning the true reasons behind our pre-game ceremonies. “Without Love” is an almost heartbreaking account of loss, something you wouldn’t think to find in an aggressive crossover record. There’s many different moods here, from the super serious political stuff to the tongue in cheek “Banger’s Embrace” about trips to see punk shows. Propagandhi have come a long way since the 90’s where they served as a Canadian NOFX soundalike. Now they have their own identity, and it’s damn solid one.

I do have to give it credit. It was the manliest-looking hatchback in the bunch.

Earlier this year, Dodge announced that it would give the interior of their compact hot hatchback, the Caliber, a makeover and then it would be no more. A part of me was happy to hear this news due to the poor market reception of the vehicle, but another part of me hurt for this little car that never had a chance to live up to its full potential.

The Caliber hit the scene in 2006 as a replacement for the aging Neon. Caliber was to offer a roomier cabin, more power, better fuel economy, more style, and greater functionality. It met all these goals (though some will disagree about the styling), but it fell short all at the same time. Why? Because Dodge did it all wrong.

Just like sending your child to school without books, paper, or pencils, Dodge handicapped the Caliber straight out of the gate. Forgiving the polarizing styling, things such as a cabin full of bland, hard textured plastics and an overall flat interior design practically forced consumers to look elsewhere. Sure, it had cute gimmicks like a drink cooler in the glovebox, lights in the cupholders, and an overhead lamp that doubled as a flashlight. But what good is any of that if the rest of it looks and feels like someone put the fewest number brain cells to work when coming up with the design?

The drivetrains were nothing to write home about either. The base 1.8 liter four cylinder engine was useless. The 2.0 liter made more sense as a base engine, and better still, the 2.4. I’ll even forgive Dodge for not letting us have the 2.0 liter diesel they offer to the Europeans. The problem is they decided to mate them through continuously variable transmissions (CVT) instead of just using geared automatic transmissions. The CVT was used as a means of increasing fuel economy. It did nothing but make them slower, and, if it broke, the whole transmission had to be replaced. If you could get one with a 5 speed manual, lucky you. If you could afford an SRT-4 version, I hate you.

It sounds as if I hate this car, but I really don’t. I am just angry that Dodge spoiled such a good thing. Caliber could have been a contender of high caliber (I’ve been saving that one for a while now. Can you tell?), but it was a pellet in a shooting range of 9mm and .45 bullets.

Dodge have teamed up with Fiat, who will be helping them develop a new small car to try and make us forget all about this red-headed stepchild of a vehicle. But those of us that love this mini-mini van will always remember it as a good car that Dodge murdered before it had a chance to breathe. In closing, I feel a familiar phrase from Top Gear best sums up the Dodge Caliber: brilliant, but rubbish.

At Cobalt, signs of the season are cropping up everywhere. Potted poinsettias lined up in the lobby.

At Cobalt, signs of the season are cropping up everywhere. Potted poinsettias lined up in the lobby. Miniature pine trees in the hallway. Baked goods and candy shared in the kitchen and on desks. And a big tree, decorated with colorful tags and bright lights with a growing pile of childrens’ toys underneath.

The holiday season is here, and at Cobalt that means we give a little more, financially and otherwise. In a previous entry we talked about Cobalt’s involvement in Northwest Harvest. In December, Cobalt is working with Treehouse and Childhaven, “two Seattle-based charities that do enormously important work for children and families. Children are the most vulnerable members of our society and the economy has pushed many more Washington families towards hardship,” in the words of CEO John Holt.

Cobalt has worked with both organizations in past years. This year Cobalt is donating $10,000 each to both Treehouse and Childhaven, and also matching employee financial contributions up to an additional $5,000 through December 23rd.

Decorated Christmas trees stationed throughout the Lynnwood and Seattle offices give employees the opportunity to make a more personal contribution to a child in need. The trees, part of a toy drive also sponsored by Treehouse, are hung with colored tags which describe presents Seattle children have wished for. Employees can choose a tag and purchase the presents themselves, then bring them in and place them under the big tree in the lobby to be donated. This is one small gesture that will hopefully make the holiday that much brighter for a child.

“It’s a thin line between fortune and despair,” said John Holt, “and I believe we recognize and honor our good luck when we reach out a hand to another.”

At Cobalt, reaching out with gifts from the heart is just one more sign of the holiday season.

If i’m not putting up news and information that you want to read, it’s kind of pointless, right?

So, I’m asking and encouraging you all to please leave comments, emails, anything at all. I’m even going to set up an instant messenger account (either on Yahoo or Skype) for those of you that would like to talk to me directly and exchange ideas. I would really appreciate the feedback. Constructive criticism is always welcome as well.

Earlier this month, we had the opportunity and privilege to host a due diligence luncheon for Geovic Mining Corp. (OTCBB: GVCM; TSX: GMC) in what has come to be known as America’s Finest City, San Diego, California. And we decided that it would be a heck of a lot cheaper for us to bring the Company to you than to bring you to the Company. To this end, we are pleased to provide you with Part one of a three part series featuring Jack Sherborne, the Company’s CEO and Andrew Hoffman, the Company’s Vice President, Investor Relations.

At the end of the third video, Jack summarizes the opportunity quite nicely as follows, “As you can see, we have no debt and we have cash in the bank, and we have a project that we’re very happy to talk about, and frankly it’s hard to find a whole lot of opportunities out there where you could have such a dominant potential mining project and basically can get it for not much more than the money that’s in the bank.” Enjoy Part 1, Part 2 will be available shortly. Click on the picutre below to watch the video.
