Sat on the bus thinking about song titles, because I had to check my iPod everytime a cool song came on, what the name of the song was. I don`t remember the song now – but it sparked the idea to set up top ten greatest song titles!

Now, this list holds my top ten greatest song titles, and when I made this list it also had to make sense how good the song was. Off course the song has to match the title. So here it is – what do you think? What would your top ten list be?

Again this is hardly new: but I don’t know how many people heard this, either.  (Thus risking the cultural irrelevance I so richly deserve.)

I just came across a new version of the Cobrastyle video by Robyn. I am very impressed. Check it out!.

Remember how reliably bad TV commercial music used to be? It’s hard to recall now because we’ve been blessed with years of iPod ads. The jingle would be a thing of the past if it weren’t an essential component of video-produced spots for local retailers (“Mel Farr to the rescue! Mel Farr to the re-e-es-cue”). This, of course, excludes the “lingle,” when an ad is punctuated by a choir singing the company’s logo and slogan. I don’t know if that thing will ever die.

Furniture depots and used car dealerships aside, ad music has mercifully evolved. I started to take note back in 2002, when one of my favourite bands, Ladytron, sold one of their little-noted instrumental tracks to a car commercial. Whether composed originally for the spot, or purchased from a musician, ad music just got better. I generally feel that the advent of the web gave way to a broader, more engaging musical landscape. It became easier for people to discover alternative bands and break away from the mainstream, especially with file sharing, iTunes, and eventually, Myspace. Right on cue, ad agencies picked up on the trend, and started to infuse their creative with what I can only assume were their own musical selections. The result is so effective that a query often found on Yahoo Answers is “what is that song in the new *** commercial?”

I think we really started to feel a shift with the iPod spots, like this one:

To me, it seems certain creatives had the sweetest job: scouring Myspace for the best background noise. It worked especially well when the music was incorporated into the concept.

Car commercials especially started to gain momentum. While people are still seeking power and performance, ads started to appeal to those of us who want a car to reflect style, dynamism, youth, and ourselves. In fact, a good friend of mine admitted that he bought his Volks as a result of this ad:

I think it’s especially effective when we’re taking about cars, of course, because that’s when we listen to music the most. You’ve got speed and mobility, set to the soundtrack of your life. And isn’t that what the idea of freedom really is? A selection of your preferences combined with movement.

I particularly like this recent spot. The build-up is executed flawlessly.

Right now, I’d like to give a shout-out to my buddy TS, who’s taken the time to read all of my blogs after noticing that he had 5 pages of catching up to do. TS admitted that he absolutely hates commercials. I think that’s a normal reaction to have. Truth be told, ad creatives also hate a lot of commercials. Thing is, agencies are often forced to comply with a client’s demands, which means that an entertaining concept quickly  turns into boring, indulgent guff. But every now and then, a client is willing to take a risk and allow creatives to have a bit of fun. The result is an ad you’ll likely remember for years and years. And yes, TS, even you have your favourites. Those entertaining ones have an impact on the choices we make, how we see ourselves, and how we perceive the world. Because it’s part of our daily routine, it’s actually quite inevitable.

And as much as we’d love to hate it, one company that allows agencies to take risks, a lot, is Coca-Cola. Based on this ad, the company is perfectly willing to sacrifice direct sales in favour of championing a particular lifestyle and demographic. Given its entertainment value, would you really switch to another channel, or would you wait until it was over? My guess is the latter.

On Selling Out

Shortly after seeing the Ladytron ad, I had the fortunate opportunity to interview Daniel Hunt, the band’s main songwriter. I asked him about selling “Mu-Tron” to the commercial, to which he aptly responded, “I think people would have be happier if we worked at Taco Bell and did music on the side. But the truth is, you’d have to be wealthy already to turn that down.”

There’s the rub. Ladytron, while they had a record contract, were still struggling. At the time, as now, they rely largely on shows as a source of revenue. To my understanding, they got a few thousand for the song, which they presumably shared between them, their manager, and whoever else. The investment was largely theirs, truth be told, and in its own way, the commercial became an ad for Ladytron.

Though we’d love to put artists in a category that’s holier than corporations, the fact is, they’ve got to eat too. Instruments are expensive, and with regular use, they require either replacement or maintenance. With file sharing and iTunes, a record contract just isn’t as viable as it once was. More than ever, musicians, even the really successful ones, go on tour and sell merchandise in the hopes of turning a profit, but mostly to generate an income. This is especially the case for alternative musicians, who, though they may be signed, aren’t benefitting from album sales in the same way as mainstream performers.

File sharing served a major blow to the music industry. While I’m certainly not expressing an opinion about file sharing specifically, I can support artists who agree to be part of an iPod ad. This is often the difference between insignificance and notoriety. And for an unsigned musician, that just makes business sense.

Although some of us got sick of hearing “1, 2, 3, 4″ repeatedly during the 2007 holiday season, most of us are glad that Feist got the kudos she deserved.

The other nice outcome in all of this is that audiences seem aware of how much musicians have been struggling in recent years. So attendance at live performances is statistically higher, and people buy more merchandise in support of their favourite artist.

And isn’t that how it should work? Shouldn’t an artist’s success be measured by their audience, rather than the company that backs them?

Fritania de las Dos Cejas

Jakiś czas temu dostałem od mojej przyjaciółki – Dżdżownicy link do takiego oto artykułu. Do linka dołączona była krótka notatka: “A może zrobiłbyś wpis o tym?”. Pomysł wydał mi się ciekawy, ale ponieważ w międzyczasie wpadło mi do głowy jeszcze kilka innych tematów na notki – odłożyłem go ad acta. Ale już się poprawiam Paulinka Tak jak obiecałem – oto lista pięciu moich ulubionych utworów z reklam. Od razu jednak zaznaczam, że “Blowin’ in the Wind” się na niej nie znajdzie. Nie dlatego, że lubię tej piosenki. Wręcz przeciwnie. Po prostu uważam, że powinna się ona na tym blogu pojawić (i na pewno kiedyś się pojawi) w innych charakterze. A teraz do rzeczy:

1. Sia – Breathe Me

Chyba jeszcze o tym nie pisałem na tym blogu, ale jestem zapalonym graczem komputerowym. Ostatnio co prawda nie mam jakoś dużo czasu na granie, ale jeżeli mam chwilę oddaję się tej rozrywce z przyjemnością. Jednym z moich ostatnich odkryć była gra “Prince of Persia”. Piękna historia, wspaniały design, a do tego taka konstrukcja całości, która pozwala czerpać radość z rozrywki bez zbędnych frustracji. Tytuł ten jest reklamowany w polskiej TV i choć muzyka z gry sama w sobie jest ładna – jako tło do spotu wybrano piosenkę Australijki – Sii. Piękny utwór, nieco melancholijny, ale idealnie pasujący i do spota i do klimatu całej gry.

2. Jose Gonzales – Heartbeats

Piękna piosenka z niezwykłej reklamy telewizorów Sony Bravia. Na pewno każdy z Was ją widział. Jeżeli nie, oto ona:

Warto zaznaczyć, że to nie jest animacja komputerowa. Twórcy tego spotu naprawdę wypuścili 25 000 piłeczek na ulice San Francisco. Pomysł szalony, ale przyniósł zamierzony efekt. Przez pewien czas tą reklama zachwycali sie wszyscy, przesyłali ją sobie na YouTube, komentowali. Z piękną warstwą wizualna spotu idealnie współgra utwór Gonzalesa, który jest akustycznym coverem utworu szwedzkiego duetu The Knife. Piosenka idealna na spokojny wieczór, albo relaks z książką i dobrą herbatę/winem. Zdecydowanie jest to również jeden z tych przypadków, kiedy reklama pomogła utworowi, zamiast mu zaszkodzić. Mnie również prawdę mówiąc bardziej podchodzi wersja Gonzalesa niż oryginał. Ale to już kwestia gustu.

3. Teddybears Sthlm & Mad Cobra – Cobrastyle

Kolejny świetny spot. Świetny, bo pomysłowy i nietypowy. Choć Heineken słynie z ciekawych reklam, które wzbudzają zainteresowanie. Kolejny przykład reklamy, która wypromowała piosenkę dwóch wykonawców, raczej znanych przez koneserów. Nawiasem mówiąc – to bardzo pozytywny utwór. No i doskonale pasuje do klimatu reklamy.

4. Amanda Lear – Enigma

Nie znacie tego utworu? A czy “Give a bit of Mmmmh to me” coś Wam mówi? Właśnie – Kinder Bueno. Enigma, to właściwy tytuł piosenki wykorzystanej w tej reklamie. Swoją drogą pomysł na tą kampanię był genialny w swojej prostocie – co robić, żeby sprzedawać więcej batoników dla dzieci? Sprzedać je rodzicom Bardzo zmysłowa reklama, do tego podkład muzyczny z dwuznacznym tekstem i voila!

5. Gianna Nannini – Meravigliosa Creatura

Ciekawą rzeczą jest jak daleko czasami przerabiane są oryginalne utwory, żeby mogły zostać wykorzystane w reklamie. “Meravigliosa Creatura” w wersji z reklamy Fiata Bravo w niczym nie przypomina oryginału. Podobnie, jak w przypadku “Heartbeats”, również tutaj bardziej podoba mi się aranżacja stworzona na potrzeby spotu. Tylko piękny mocny głos Niannini i smyczki w tle. Wersja oryginalna jest zdecydowanie za szybka i jakaś taka bez wyrazu. Ktoś, kto wpadł na pomysł tak redykalnej zmiany stylu utworu trafił w dziesiątkę. A poza tym fakt, że włoski samochód reklamuje włoska piosenka jest rzeczą godną naśladowania.

No i jak się Wam podoba ta lista? Coś pominałem, coś umieściłem niepotrzebnie? Jak zwykle wszystkie komentarze mile widziane

Net als menig student zit ik momenteel te stressen boven mijn cursussen. Aangezien ik niet kan studeren met stilte, ik heb echt nood aan achtergrondgeluid of ik ga ten onder aan de interne monologen met de stemmetjes in mijn hoofd. Daarom heb ik de radio tijdens het blokken aanstaan. Niet cd’s want dan let ik gegarandeerd op welk liedje volgt op welk en kan ik de gehele cd meeblèren (weliswaar een toonladder of twee ernaast, menig gestorven componist zou zich omdraaien in zijn graf bij het horen van mijn zangstem. En menig katachtige zou mij vervoegen in het gejank).

Het voordeel aan naar de radio luisteren is dat ik nieuwe muziekjes leer kennen. En het gedacht dat daarbij volgt is, zou dat liedje een videoclip hebben, en zou die clip iets interessant of geniaal voorstellen (denk: Ok go! – Here it goes again). Dus bij Dream on van Christian Falk en Robyn dacht ik, laten we even youtube raadplegen.

De Scandinavische Robyn heeft namelijk de eigenschap een beetje excentriek te zijn (getuige de kleren en het kapsel). Wel ik moet zeggen dat Dream On eigenlijk een heel mooie clip is maar oordeelt u vooral voor uzelf

Ook de clip van het aanstekelijke Cobrastyle van Robyn vind ik wel iets hebben (en dat heeft niets te maken met de mensen die hun kleren uittrekken, jullie vetzakken!)

Cobrastyle was in fact a track which used riffs and elements of older songs that you might be familiar with including “Bomdigi” by Erick Sermon.

Robyn went on to do a cover of it in 2006 for her EP The Rakamonie.

The track itself, was so successful it has been featured in countless ad campaigns and TV shows.

Dacă tot am zis de The Bunnymen, hai să zic şi de Teddybears. Şi cu ocazia asta mai postez o piesă la categoria “melodii antrenante pentru sesiune”. Teddybears Sthlm – Different Sound ( feat Malte Holmberg ). Din păcate nu are clip, aşa c-am postat improvizaţia cuiva. Piesa oricum rupe.

Pe oamenii aştia îi ştii probabil cu Cobrastyle, piesă folosită la reclama Heineken. Uite-o aici în caz că totuşi nu ştii despre ce vorbesc.

Funky, funky songs. De fapt, dacă stau să mă gândesc, tot albumul e aşa. Şi dacă tot vorbesc de album trebuie să ştii că îl cheamă Fresh! şi e lansat în 2005, şi te sfătuiesc să-l descarci că e foarte foarte fain. Numa piese de major boogie pe el. Zău. A! Şi altă chestie faină la Teddybears, e faptul că în concerte apar toţi cu nişte măşti mari mai mari. Ce măsti? În formă de cap de urs. Sunt aşa slick la costume şi cu capete cât luna plină.
