Washington, Nov. 14: If US company Terrafugia has its way, the world’s first road-registered, air-wo

Washington, Nov. 14: If US company Terrafugia has its way, the world’s first road-registered, air-worthy, flying car could be on the highways and in the skies by the year 2011.

The firm’s new vehicle is called the Transition Roadable Aircraft.

Personal aircraft have been on Terrafugia’s drawing boards for years now, but this latest project combines road and air transport needs.

The prototype is still going through testing and approval processes, but it really does fly and drive.

As it is categorized as a light sport aircraft, the Transition only requires a sport pilot licence in the US.

At the heart of the concept are folding wings that tuck in neatly beside the cockpit for road use. They are deployed and folded from the convenience of the cockpit.

The plane to car transition is stated to take less than 30 seconds.

The vehicle, would allow the driver and a passenger to drive to the airport, hit the runway after deploying the wings, fly to their chosen airport and then drive to their destination, which sounds like the ultimate in modern travel.

Terrafugia also note that while other personal aircraft become grounded in bad weather, the Transition will shrug off stormy skies and simply take to the road, which means days of being stranded at the airport would be history.

Having driven home from the nearest airport, the Transition can be easily stowed away in an average garage; so there’s no need for a hanger.

For the safety conscious, there is a safety cage, crumple zone, side impact protection and the owner can also have a full vehicle parachute, not recommended for use on the freeway.

The flying car, which would cost 195,000 dollars, would be officially launched in 2011. (ANI)

Cockpit guitarist talks about the band’s success and plans

Alicia Blü, guitarist for the all-female group Cockpit, will be the special guest on the internationally syndicated Hard Rock Nights from November 6-12. Preparing for an opening slot with the Supersuckers in California, Alicia takes a few minutes to talk about Cockpit’s debut EP, “Mission To Rock,” placement of the band’s music in television shows, and her favorite guitarist, Doug Aldrich.

Cockpit’s press release shows some of the major influences on their style and sound: “Heavy Judas Priest-style guitar riffs? Check. Bass lines stolen from Motörhead and KISS? Check. Fat, punchy AC/DC drums? Check. What more could you ask from a band that promises the return of rock? How about anthem-esque hooks, tasty guitar solos and choruses worthy of an arena? Check, check and most definitely check.”

To learn more about Cockpit, visit the band’s website at ilovecockpit.com, Myspace at myspace.com/cockpit, and Twitter @cockpitrocks.

Last week the story broke about a Northwest Airlines flight that got diverted and missed its intended destination by oh about 150 MILES. Now I have absolutely no sense of direction. I’ve lived in the same city for more than 10 years and still get lost. But 150 miles? Are you freaking kidding me?

Wait it gets better. So naturally, everyone’s wondering what were they doing? How could this happen? Were they sleeping? Were they hurt? Was it a terrorist? I mean this is a post-9/11 world we live in, we have to take these things into consideration.

These brainiacs, Captains Timothy Cheney and Richard Cole, adamantly denied sleeping on the job. They instead, initially, say they were engrossed in a heated argument and lost track of time. A HEATED ARGUMENT? Are you freaking kidding me? Was that really the best you can do? At least if you said you were sleeping you could get some sympathy points, dillweeds. Oh the poor pilots they’re so fatigued and overworked.

It turns out these geniuses were on their laptops. Other than them reading this blog there is no excuse that will fly with me on this. It’s totally unacceptable. So, one of you couldn’t fly the plane while the other surfed for porn? I’m just saying.

Now I confess I occasionally use my cell phone while driving. It’s not a habit (I’m not Maria Shriver for crissakes). But occasionally the need to send a text or make a call coincides with me being in my car. (When you live in a city that tops the worst commutes list annually this tends to happen). I realize this is dangerous and I’m not proud of it, but this is altogether different. There were hundreds of lives in your hands, literally. Thank God no one was hurt.

The craziest thing is the airline has no policy against this. So who knows how often this is happening. I don’t even want to imagine that the person piloting my plane is playing Mafia Wars on Facebook. It’s frightening. The airline industry has enough of a stigma for being unsafe with plane crashes and drunk pilots, these guys are not helping at all.

I hope if anything good comes out of this mess. I hope that the FAA will review the policies and institute measures to prevent this from happening again. I mean it would seem pretty obvious to me that surfing the Net and flying the plane don’t exactly fit well together, but hey what do I know.

You can read more about this story here.
But the fun part was the party afterwards, I got to know people from other pharma companies, especially someone from Japanese pharma company, like Takeda pharmaceutical.

I was just going through some things on my computer and just thought I’d share this here. This was taken back in June when we were in the Philippines. Sydney and I were pretty eager to watch a cockfight so we were brought here. We didn’t feel too welcomed, mainly due to the fact that all eyes were on us and our cameras in a pretty shady place. This literally took place about 5 minutes from where we were staying in Solsona, Ilocos Norte.

Apparently, they train these roosters for about two years before a fight like this, for a fight which lasts for less than 20 seconds. Everyone places bets for about 10-15 minutes before the fight, and apparently you could win a couple of thousand dollars IF I do recall correctly… Someone told me you could win up to 80,000 PHP, which is equivalent to roughly around $2,000 CAD.

Happy Belated Thanksgiving.

When I heard about that North West Airlines flight that bypassed the Minneapolis airport and kept on

When I heard about that North West Airlines flight that bypassed the Minneapolis airport and kept on going…for another 150 miles, two thoughts immediately flashed through my mind:

1. What if they didn’t have enough fuel?

2. Pilot Fatigue?

Now those pilots say they were having a “heated discussion” about airline policy. Some people think they were sleeping. Whatever they were doing, that was scary!

I’ve been really afraid of flying since Lockerbie, because I was in London, and had just passed through Frankfurt around that time. Since then, airplane crashes and near misses have only reinforced my fear.

Hearing about that incident where pilots, TWO pilots, just let the plane fly itself to wherever on a straight line is not very reassuring.

I decided to look into Pilot Fatigue…and found a report from NASA (America’s National Aeronautics and Space Administration). The NASA report outlines the findings from a study the agency did on pilot fatigue and its implications for aviation safety.

The Deputy Associate Administrator in the Office of Aero-Space Technology at NASA testified at a Congressional Hearing on Pilot Fatigue in August, 1999. 10 Years ago!

He told the Aviation Subcommittee of the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, United States House of Representatives, that Pilot Fatigue is a significant safety issue in aviation.

He testified that: “Rather than simply being a mental state that can be willed away or overcome through motivation or discipline, fatigue is rooted in physiological mechanisms related to sleep, sleep loss, and circadian rhythms. These mechanisms are at work in flight crews no less than others who need to remain vigilant despite long duty days, transmeridien travel, and working at night when the body is programmed for sleep”.

According to the NASA official: “Flight crews routinely respond that fatigue is a concern, often admitting to having nodded off during a flight and/or arranging for one pilot to nap in the cockpit seat”.

• The crewmembers napped one-at-a-time in a three-person cockpit with minimal disruption to normal flight operations and no reported or identified concerns regarding safety. The benefits of the nap were observed throughout the critical descent and landing phases of flight. The planned nap appeared to provide effective and acute relief from significant sleepiness experienced by crews in three-person nonaugmented flight operations.

• He told Congres: The Fatigue Countermeasures Program submitted a draft advisory circular to the FAA in January 1993 on “Controlled Rest on the Flight Deck.” Regulatory provisions that would sanction the appropriate use of planned cockpit rest remain under review. Several non-U.S. air carriers have already implemented the procedure.

Congress apparently asked NASA to conduct the Study. NASA’s Ames Research Center created a program to examine whether “there is a safety problem of uncertain magnitude, due to transmeridian flying and a potential problem due to fatigue in association with various factors found in air transport operations.”

Researchers came up with a number of recommendations and countermeasures to address Pilot Fatigue in the cockpit.

Is anyone (Sixty Minutes, Oprah?) asking if the FAA implemented those measures and how many US CARRIERS HAVE SIGNED ON?

Do I have to stop blogging and go do some investigative journalism (which I was trained to do)? I’m sleeping – blogging is much easier! Just like Networks/Media Outlets are sleeping – because it’s also much easier to hire bloviates who promulgate spin, opinion and bull – instead of dealing with FACTS – which by the way are inconvenient things!

If they were indeed arguing, or “heatedly discussing” – maybe those two should NOT work together anymore? Please argue while having a drink (preferably orange juice) at a club – NOT up in the air where it causes you to go 150 miles off course.

I also found this article that appeared in USA TODAY in JUNE. 2009.

Airlines, pilot unions and federal officials have until September first to develop new rules to limit fatigue among pilots, the Federal Aviation Administration said Wednesday in an unusually aggressive move to reach agreement on one of the industry’s most contentious safety issues.

The National Transportation Safety Board has cited fatigue as a factor in several recent crashes, including a February crash near Buffalo that killed 50 people.

The board revealed last month that both pilots on that flight had not gotten a full night’s sleep before the accident.
The NTSB lists combating fatigue as one of its “Most Wanted” safety improvements.

FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt called on airlines and pilot unions to begin meeting with federal officials by July 15 to come up with recommendations on how long pilots can work each day.
The committee will have until September to present their findings, Babbitt said in a news release. “Now is the time to push these initiatives forward,” he said.

An effort to get unions and airlines to reach a compromise in the 1990s failed, leaving 50-year-old rules that scientists who study fatigue say do little to promote safety.

Under current rules, pilots generally can fly up to eight hours a day. Their workday, which includes time on the ground between flights, can extend up to 16 hours. There are no restrictions on flying during the middle of the night or making numerous takeoffs and landings.

Curtis Graeber, a scientist who has studied pilot fatigue for nearly 30 years, said that research can better predict how long pilots should work than simple hourly limits.

Factors such as how many days in a row a pilot has worked and whether rest periods allow for a good night’s sleep should be used to limit flying time, Graeber said.

Airlines in Europe, Australia and New Zealand have begun adopting such rules. Graeber said he is not hopeful that the groups can reach agreement in this country.

“Getting that kind of consensus has proved challenging in the past,” he said.

Pilots have rejected attempts to extend the amount of time they can fly and airlines oppose changes that would restrict scheduling.
Airlines and the Air Line Pilots Association say they support the government’s effort.

DO YOU NOTE THE SENTENCE BEFORE THE LAST? > Pilots have rejected attempts to extend the amount of time they can fly and airlines oppose changes that would restrict scheduling.

Why not just put a squadron of fighter jets on standby – to escort runaway planes…and bill the airlines/Pilots Union?!

That would get somebody’s attention!

(Please remember: I’m ONLY posting on SUNDAY’S now, due to other commitments).

“In 9000 Metern Höhe und vor den Augen von 100 Passagieren haben sich Piloten und Flugbegleiter einer indischen Fluggesellschaft einen handfesten Streit geliefert. Nachdem eine Stewardess den Kapitänen sexuelle Belästigung vorgeworfen hatte, ging das Personal aufeinander los – mit Faustschlägen und Beschimpfungen, wie eine Zeitung berichtete. Das Cockpit sei zeitweise unbesetzt gewesen.”

We have finally moved to London! “Hackney Road, better let it be known…” The lyr

We have finally moved to London! “Hackney Road, better let it be known…” The lyric from 240 doesn’t have the same ring to it, but now we’re not too far away from what will hopefully be a bunch of brand new open mics and venues to play! We intend to get on it as soon as possible, but money will hold us back to start with. It’s good old fashioned home drinking time again! Speaking of home drinking, today is Puma’s birthday! Sadly the poor sod has been summoned to work… It’s hard to believe I know; his first day of work at his new job is a Friday…his birthday…our first day in our new house… The Man is heartless for sure. Luckily for me, I still don’t have a job! Hooray! I continue to assault the internet with my particular brand of knowledgeless of all fields. The only downside is that I literally cannot afford to eat… My last three pounds went on a sandwich, bottle of peach Iced Tea and a reduced to clear chocolate Swiss roll (25p bargain!). Not the best investment, but it was a tasty first night in London treat!

We’re planning a house warming party to celebrate Puma’s birthday, but sadly we don’t really know enough people to make it a party… So it’ll be more of a…conversation. Perhaps even a monologue if things get really bad! We’re going to try to find something to do that is fun and free, but London isn’t famous for being cheap. It’s famous for ROOOOOOOOOCK! Or…pretentious indie bollocks, as it would appear nowadays.

News news news, let me see. Tales From Cardigan Road is now up on Facebook, Myspace, Lastfm and AmazingTunes. We might make some extra changes when we have the time. We’re also planning to make some stripped-down versions of the songs, so that people considering booking us as an acoustic act have a more accurate demo to go by. Don’t get me wrong – we LOVE the crowd-orientated, multiple guitars, clarinet backing version of Bears! It’s just not really fair for us to get gigs based on the false assumption that we bring a ship full of musicians everywhere we go. If only.

For Puma’s actual birthday (tonight), we’ll probably do something cheap. Normally this involves drinking cider and then going to Cockpit, but London doesn’t have Cockpit…so we won’t be doing that. We may go to a friend’s gig in Camden though, so we might see you out there if you’re around. Basically we need to spend some time sniffing out the good places to play.

For now, I should probably do something to earn money. I should also start on those stripped-down demos. Eating and drinking should probably be on the agenda, but my share of the three grand we just paid for this house has left me somewhat…weakened. Want to see what we each had to pay to live her for this first month? Of course you do..

Luckily – famine fuels rock! That’s what they say, isn’t it?

Ah
