Questo signor Dio dev’essere un personaggio davvero sadico, per decidere di privare l’uomo della coda. La coda avrebbe evitato all’uomo anni e anni di guerre e violenza, ma soprattutto avrebbe reso molto più semplici ed immediati i rapporti con le donne.

Pensate. Verrebbe completamente eliminato il figadilegnismo dalla faccia della Terra. Le donne non potrebbero più tirarsela, venendo tradite in continuazione dal movimento della propria coda. Hai poco da fare la sostenuta, se comincia ad agitarsi furiosamente.

Inoltre, l’uomo timido avrebbe finalmente vita facile. Niente più goffi tentativi di approccio, niente più “dove ti ho già vista?”, niente più “posso offrirti da bere?“, niente più “hai da accendere?“. Una scodinzolata e via. “Oooh, ma com’è dolce. Diamogliela”.

Certo, non mancherebbero le situazioni imbarazzanti (“ti piace QUELLA? You sick pervert!“) ma niente che non possa essere risolto ubriacandosi.

Per non parlare dei politici! Ora, pensate tutti ad un politico a caso. Sì, proprio quello. Immaginatevelo di fronte ad una domanda scomoda. Una risposta a coda alta sarebbe sufficiente per dimostrare che ha ragione lui ed è convinto di quello che dice. Ma se la coda finisse in mezzo alle gambe, la maschera cadrebbe senza possibilità di replica.

La teoria finale, dunque, è che se non abbiamo la coda è colpa di Berlusconi.

Ovviamente non stiamo parlando di un’acconciatura, bensì di un prolungamento posteriore della colonna vertebrale. E non stiamo parlando di una codina a scopetto per tenere lontano le mosche dal fondoschiena, bensì della famosa coda lunga. Uno pseudopode snodato, che vi permetta di esprimere quelle gestualità caudali fondamentali come: scodinzolare, mettere la coda tra le gambe, e arricciare la coda a forma di punto interrogativo. Ma non fermiamoci qui: la coda oltre che bella è anche fondamentale per l’equilibrio e la locomozione, può essere uno scudo, un’arma e – inutile dirlo – una rivoluzione sessuale.

Ma prima di addentrarsi nello specifico, se si sta valutando l’opzione coda, le domande fondamentali da farsi sono le seguenti:

Nuda o pelosa? Certo, la coda nuda è bruttina da vedersi e vi fa sembrare un ratto, ma anche quella pelosa che effetto può fare, se poi per il resto siete glabri come normali homo sapiens? E dove deve finire il pelo? Alla base dell’osso sacro, o risalire su per la colonna vertebrale? Vale la pena rifletterci (1).

Obbediente o senziente? Vale a dire, la vostra coda fa solo quello che le dite di fare, o ha un grado di autonomia? Fa quello che dico io, sarebbe la risposta più semplice, ma non sottovalutate i vantaggi di una coda indipendente che rifletta il vostro lato più animalesco.

Naturale o cibernetica? Ovvero, preferite che la vostra coda sia il risultato di una mutazione umana o pensavate a una protesi cibernetica? In molti considerano la coda naturale più elegante, sebbene sia meno resistente e non possa essere usata per deflettere i colpi del nemico, ma considerate questo: un arto cibernetico è forte solo quanto la parte del corpo a cui è saldato. Per cui una coda cibernetica può essere usata come frusta, o come arto prensile, solo se il vostro osso sacro è in grado di reggere la sollecitazione (banalmente: se vi appendete a un ramo usando la vostra coda cibernetica, vi verrà comunque un gran mal di schiena). Molto spesso conviene accontentarsi di una coda naturale abbinata a una muscolatura lombare adeguata, e magari pensare a dei piercing affilati sulla punta per massimizzarne il potenziale offensivo.

its been a hell of a week with its ups and downs, lets just say that.

so since urbanite is literally a week away, rehearsals for carlton’s project group “purpose by design” have been getting more and more intense. driving back home from highwood on the interstate, i was rear ended by an out of control car that blew out a tire. most importantly, no one was injured (minus a bruise on my elbow, which may not even have been from the accident at all, but i’m not even sure haha), and as an added bonus, my car hardly incurred any damage – just a busted tail light, flat tire, and a bumper thats hanging off the car. i am so thankful for being able to still have control of my car even with a busted tire going 60 mph. seriously, my car / tank has saved my life numerous times.

this week has been mad busy with dance too. last sunday, i taught the fusion company class (video to go up soon! i promise!), tuesday was CODA co class, and yesterday ben and i put the finishing touches on our collabo piece that we gave to kapwa modern at loyola. they are going to be performing their set which includes our piece at I-nite tonight, and Nite in Manila at northwestern univ on sunday at 3 PM.

also, for some reason, literally every choreographer in chicago decided to have a workshop on saturday, and me, ben and matt are no exception. representing redef, coda, fusion, and refresh, we cover a variety of the dance world both at NU and in the chicago scene. i’m gonna be teaching an older piece that i’ve taught 2 or 3 times before, but never to the NU audience. the workshop is totally free, which is basically unheard of in chicago. workshops cost money to set up rental space, to get choreographers in, etc. NU historically has had a difficult time training for dance since evanston is worlds away from any dance studio, so refresh is really doing a great thing for the community by bringing us chicago choreographers to come thru and share a bit of what we do. please, by all means, join in invite your friends. if you’re not already in the fb group, hit it up, and im sure ben will make you an admin, like he did with everyone else lol. and, if you like the flier that i made and need something done, hit me up flier making is my new passion, and is almost as fun as coming up with new choreography haha.

Un consiglio: provatelo un giorno in cui avete un progetto da realizzare davvero, non solo per cazzeggiare. Se lo guardate con diffidenza e/o aria di sufficienza, potrebbe non catturare la vostra attenzione. Usatelo seriamente e vedrete Peccato solo che non abbia nulla per “iniziare da zero” e vincere il panico da “foglio bianco”… ma per quello potete comunque farvi dare un’input da iWeb, o dai mille siti di template (più o meno gratuiti) che circolano in rete.

On a fundamentally basic level, the Coda is a dictionary of affordances.

How Don Norman defines affordances through a specific example:

The coda screen “affords” us to click through the links, because we infer that they are links and therefore should be clicked. As we subconsciously surrender to this robotic action, we discover something more: the links lead to new links (and so on and so forth) that contain and exhibit information and explanations. We now are armed and ready with the knowledge of the history of each image and animation that is used throughout the Ballad. By visiting the Coda page, we have now been given the many answers to the many questions we had by swimming through the poem’s many pages. Just as the poetic agent was previously defined as a legion–the fragments of the poem that are portrayed on each HTML coded page are also a legion by nature. (My name is Legion for we are many.) Each page leads to a new page which ultimately leads to the encyclopedic Coda at the end, which also leads to a multitude of pages about each artist, mathematician, etc. that was included in the image variety.

In regards to the images themselves, they very much coincide with the diction and style of the Ballad. This is resonant with Susan H. Delagrange’s article “When Revision is Design”, specifically the section on Disambiguation. Delagrange tells us that new levels of lucidity in regards to how an image (especially in a scholarly web article) relates to the text are preferred over ambiguous relationships between the two realms. Strickland’s Ballad is tedifously concerned with allowing the image and text coexist with one another effortlessly. The above screen shot appeals to this ideal; the “twirlies” associated with the second line are equally present within the swirling lines of the seashell in the image. Also, the coloring in the image are matched up to the HTML font color code in the verse.

i download the infamous Coda and install, it works like the way it suppose to be! i know now why it received Apple Design Award 2007!

i woke up with a huge pain in my right knee, and throughout the day i just tried to keep weight off of it, and the pain mostly went away by the end of the day, but it just felt weak. there are way too many of us. people with permanent injuries, ppl who need surgery, ppl who are currently recovering from surgery…its one of those things that i realized about what we do. our bodies will only allow us to do it for so long. might as well go all in while you can still can.

carlton and i were talking about this at rehearsal last night, those little injuries really prevent your mind from performing normally. now i have to choreograph for sunday:

and i’m teaching the collabo piece that ben and i worked on to kapwa modern in a few hours. you remember when you were in elementary school and would run and knee slide everywhere, and fall off of everything in the playground and never get hurt? those were the days. i want to be invincible again lol.

in case you miss the sunday fusion workshop, ill also be teaching it at CODA company class tuesday. the collabo piece will also be taught again at some point in the near future.

so a certain unnamed nightclub venue spends too much time thinking about how theyre the best club in ann arbor to think about treating ppl right…but they did pour some cheap strongass drinks. 3 dollar jager bombs? unheard of in chicago.

basically, these bar nights turn into some form of a shitshow…this year, it was mostly just people getting thrown out of the club, people throwing up, and all kinds of hilarious shit documented on camera lol.

see how everyone is wearing skinny jeans? i said i never would, but i had to buy myself a pair. mine arent really all that skinny, but theyre still restrictive enough that i fear for my reproductive health everytime i get out of a car.

and everyone was clearly still drunk / hungover for the 4 classes the next day. our good pals from the D, joey and justin, came thru to take classes, but had to leave before we went out to go eat. altho pizza house has some seriously badass food (and amazing fuckin chicken tenders) they need to cook faster, damn haha. we got home late as hell, even if we spent a part of the drive in chicago running red lights lol. see what happens when teddy stops driving and SOMEONE else takes over?

This is gonna be the first instalment of a track-by-track rundown, so you can learn a little bit about each of the songs!  I’ll cover the first ‘arc’ of the album today, which are tracks 1-6!

1. Open

This is the album intro!  I wanted the title to have two meanings, one which was obviously the album intro being the ‘opening’ of the story / journey, but also for it to encourage listeners to enter the album with an open mind, open attitude and open heart.  The idea of “open your body / open your mind” was to combine the physical and mental, as some of the album songs are very much about physical sentiments such as sex, money and fashion; others are more to do with thoughts, emotions and relationships and our feelings and beliefs surrounding those situations.  It was also meant to have a somewhat mysterious feel, which is why my voice stutters and distorts at various parts. “I’m coming in” is your sign to get ready!…

2. All Night Long

…as I ask at the beginning of this song, “Are you ready?” The journey is beginning!  I wanted the album’s opening track (i.e. this is the first song proper) to be a slow, sexy song for two reasons: I thought it would be striking to open the album with a slower song, as all too often the temptation is to go in boom! bang! bang! with your uptempo.  I wanted the album to rise and fall in a more genuine way, and not to be front-loaded with club numbers.  I think that interspersing the album with uptempos, midtempos and slower songs throughout makes it more genuine and ultimately more engaging and cohesive.  This song was inspired by two songs: “Discipline” by Janet Jackson – but I hadn’t actually heard the song at this point! I’d read that there was an S&M theme, that it was a dark, slow song and I was inspired by those thoughts to make a song that I thought sounded like the essence of ‘discipline’ (hence its namecheck in the lyrics – “I exhibit discipline”); and “Mary Jane” by Mary J. Blige, from her seminal My Life album.  The hook of the song is a resung version of that song’s hook (which I’m aware is not the original use of that hook anyway, but it’s the version I’m most familiar with), but I slowed down the tempo and tried to do something a little bit different with it.  I also was tempted by the idea of putting this song first as it’s the most explicit, sexual song on the album – it’s the perfect start to the night-time, as Quiet Storm was largely inspired by the nocturnal, both in its soundscape and artwork.  And by getting the sex out of the way, we can focus on deeper things!  This actually being one of the very first songs I completed for the album, I don’t 100% remember how the beat breakdown came about now, but I love it and I felt that it was a really striking way to end the song… The breakdown is picked up by one of the songs at the album’s close, which also makes the album come full circle.

3. If I

Another one of the first songs I wrote for the album, this is probably the most dance-based song on the record, and it has a very nocturnal, dark feel again, as emphasised by the harmonies at the beginning which are nearly-but-not-quite off-key! It gives the song a mysterious introduction, which combined with the dance beat, makes it sound almost menacing.  The subject matter explores the fact that we all go to such lengths to please other people, and what would happen if we were just who we naturally are, rather than striving to meet others’ expectations?  At the end of the day, I’m just a young guy who wants to have fun and be happy and enjoy life!  Isn’t that what everyone wants?  Why should I put myself out for you?  What would happen if I did to you the things you do to me?  How would you feel about that?  That’s the main thematic of the song, and it’s one of the songs main uptempos.  The repetitive hook is actually quite en vogue now, but at the time of writing it, I really thought I was onto something and I felt that it was a little bit fun and kooky (as well as quite hot)!  But I generally liked the combination of the pulsing beats and the quite revealing lyrics: we all feel like a prisoner of other people’s “unrealistic expectations” and pressures at times, and although by living up to them we keep the peace and excel, to what extent do we sacrifice ourselves?  We all need to cut loose sometimes.

4. Hook Boy

I love this song!  It was a song I wrote lyrics to quite early on, but I just could not get right for ages!!!!! Ultimately, it was one of the last songs I completed for the album, as it was in work-in-progress stage for possibly a year!  This song is about swag, and also about songwriting prowess – I am still learning and honing my craft when it comes to singing, writing and producing, and I appreciate that on Garageband there’s only so much I can do. But at least I have total control of my music, and I’m pretty pleased with what I produce at this stage.  I can say, hand on heart, that this album is something I am very proud of!  And to be in charge of all these aspects of my music is very important to me, as it pisses me off to see certain stars who’ve made it big without much talent to speak of.  So I’m bigging myself up on this song, and although you could read it in terms of sexual prowess or swagger, to me, it’s really about being the best singer and songwriter I can be, and trying to offer something fresh.  Being a “hook boy” refers to being able to write a decent, catchy hook!  But as the coda of the song says (where the beat changes and becomes a little more complex – another end-of-song development I love!), sometimes people take your ability for granted, and at the same time as we may be skilled and have swag and talent, we have to make sure that people don’t take us for a ride without appreciating who we are and what we do.  We need to be proud and confident in ourselves, and it’s nice for others to recognise that, but we also need to make sure that people don’t take advantage of us.  So there’s an extra layer in there.

5. Focused (Interlude)

This interlude is thrilling to me because I finally got some harmonies exactly how I wanted them – there are about six layers of vocals in this!  It’s short and sweet, and essentially segues between the three beat-driven songs we’ve had so far (slow, deep sexual beat; mysterious, menacing dance beat; midtempo, stuttering beat) and the next song which will be the album’s first proper ballad.  ”I’m too focused on the beat, gotta focus on the melody!”

6. Secret

This song is one where I wanted my voice to stand out, and that’s why it starts off acapella – I wanted it to be a stark contrast to the songs which came before, and to really be melody- and vocal-focused.  A good melody can make or break a song, and I wanted the heartfelt nature of this song, the album’s first romantic track, to really come through in the melody.  I also wanted a song which was vocally-driven, as I want to reinforce that I am a singer and confident vocalist first and foremost.  I was inspired by Delta Goodrem’s “Believe Again” – although that song has a more electronic, dance undertone than this track, I loved how the beats and effects built up through the song, so that was something I sought to replicate here.  After the second verse, the beat chips in, and it’s sorta off-kilter (not a straightforward 2/4 or 4/4).  It drops out again completely for the bridge, leaving my voice to carry the song to its finale.  I wanted to emphasise the vocals and the vocal melody line as the spine of the song, especially as the lyrics are so romantic and heartfelt.  It’s quite possibly the most purely optimistic song on the record – it’s a very positively romantic song not coloured by heartache, and brings the first arc of the album to a satisfying close, while seguing into the next songs…

Up until now, all-electric vehicles have been placed squarely in the domain of the rich; few can afford the $109,000 Tesla Roadster, and even the company’s upcoming “economy” car, the Model S, will cost over $57,000. With the exception of neighborhood electric vehicles–often just golf carts resembling small electric cars–EVs have been out of the range of the masses. That may all change with the Nissan Leaf, scheduled for release in late 2010. Nissan says the car will be priced affordably, in the range of a C-class sedan, which means we can expect it to cost anywhere from $25,000 – $35,000.
When released, the car is expected to go 100 miles on a charge with a top speed of at least 76 mph–more than enough juice for most everyday driving. The car can be charged up to 80% of full capacity in less than 30 minutes with a quick charger, and can be charged in regular 200V outlets in about eight hours.

By the time it hits the streets, the Leaf will already have competition in the form of Coda Automotive’s EV, expected to be released fall 2010. The mostly Chinese-manufactured car also goes 100 miles on a charge and has a similar top speed of 80 mph, but it probably won’t be nearly as mainstream as the Leaf. Coda’s EV will initially only be released in California, and even when it expands to the rest of the country it will be marketed primarily over the Internet. That makes it more of a niche car than the showroom-ready Leaf, which has the added benefit of a familiar brand name.

Chances are that Nissan will reveal a more sophisticated EV–perhaps one with a higher top speed and range–in the near future. But by releasing the Leaf, Nissan is at least beginning to bring the EV dream down to Earth for many consumers.

Well, I tried to take the day off, but spent the first 3 hours of the morning on work emails, accompanied by tea and whole grain toast with Blue Diamond honey almond butter. I can not get enough of the stuff!  Not sure what the rest of the day will bring, but it is shaping up to be another beautiful fall day here in Boston. Tonight we are heading to our neighbors’ house for a fire in the backyard and to share one of our bottles of Domaine Moulin Tacussel Chateauneuf du Pape from the last Bin Ends fine wine flea market. Heading to another one this Sunday!

But before I head out for the rest of the day, a restaurant review!

I had plans on Wednesday night to meet up with an old friend at Post 390 which I have been dying to try again after our good experience on their third night open. Apparently they are doing quite well, as it was a 2.5-3 hour wait! Hungry and not really able to eat dinner at 10 on a work night, we decided to talk a short walk to Coda, conveniently located at the corner of Dartmouth and Columbus in Boston’s South End/Back Bay area.

Coda is a friendly neighborhood place. I had only been there once before for drinks and an appetizer during the last summer Olympics. At the time, a woman came in with two small children, a little panicked because her car had broken down in the city. The bartender sat the kids up at the bar, made them Shirley Temples, and put on the Olympics for them. Other Coda staff helped the woman with her car, and a neighbor stopping in to pick up food also took a look at the car. I instantly loved the way everyone at Coda went out of their way to be helpful.

Wednesday night, we were ravenous and looking for a cozy place to catch up. Coda turned out to be perfect, not too crowded when we arrived so we got a great corner window seat, complete with comfy pillows in the booth. To celebrate mid-week, I ordered a glass of Mionetto prosecco, one of my favorites. My husband ordered a Nitro Stout which was sooooooo good! It tasted like coffee and chocolate, all toasty and delicious. I love my prosecco, but the stout was definitely more seasonal.

For my meal, I ordered two appetizers which I often do. I like smaller portions, and ordering two small dishes allows me to try a couple of different flavors. I was very happy with my choices, sugar pumpkin soup with sage brown butter and  brioche croutons and the zucchini beer fritters with paprika aioli.

The soup was creamy and delicious, exactly what I wanted on a cool fall evening. The brioche croutons were slightly crunchy, but softened in the soup, making for a yummy bready-ness. The fritters were to die for. They had tons of shredded zucchini and a nice dough. Dipped in the smoky, spicy aioli, they were super comforting and delicious, a very nice treat indeed! My friend got Coda’s signature mac and cheese which was a very large portion, enough for lunch the next day, and the hubs had steak frites which he devoured. The fries were SO good, very thin and crispy, heavenly little bits of salty potato.

The Interface:

Coda

Coda has an amazingly simple to use interface. If you’re like me and you’ve used Dreamweaver before you’ll know why I prefer this app to Dreamweaver. I feel that Dreamweaver has a cluttered interface that’s hard to navigate. With coda you can easily switch between tabs. You can edit your site, Preview your site or even add new CSS properties. In the sidebar of Coda you can view all files that are located in your sites folder. If you have to many files and just couldn’t be bothered scrolling all the way down to look for an image/document you can just head up to the right hand corner of this application and search for it! I just find that Coda is really laid out well. It’s just so simple to navigate through all the features of this application.

The Features:

Coda comes with many amazing features such as the ability to read Ebooks on how to edit HTML, PHP and much more. When you purchase this app and you select the Books tab you will be presented with four excellent books on how to edit the four main languages of the web (PHP, CSS, Javascript and HTML). If you want you can also add your own books that are hosted online. You can add covers, an author, a description etc.

If you head over to the CSS tab you can add new CSS properties by just clicking the add button and editing the info under the drop-downs/Text boxes to the right. You can easily style your text add backgrounds to your site or just fiddle around with your DIV tags with the settings to your right.

Under the Preview tab you can view what your site will look like in Safari without having to open up any separate applications. I find this very useful when I want to see whether my HTML tags are correct or not. It’s definitely way better than what I had to do before when I was just using Text Edit to create HTML files. I always needed my internet browser open to Preview any changes and it didn’t automatically update the page for me. I had to reload the page in the browser.

Under the sites tab you can view all the websites you are currently editing. Coda creates some wonderful looking previews for you that can be resized using the slider at the bottom of the window. If you connect your site to a domain name in Coda you will actually see a preview of the site from online rather than from a Local directory.

Plug Ins:

If you navigate through the developers site you will come across a page devoted to third party plugins. You can add many more brilliant features to Coda using these plugins.

I love spending my days looking through these Plug ins to see if I can find any cool ones. One of my favorite Coda Plug Ins available is definitely the AuotHyperlinks third party plug in. What that add on does is it automatically converts raw URLs and Email Addresses to links instead of me having to write the HTML tag for links.

The Icon:

Before I finish off this post I must express my love for the Coda icon. It’s such a High Quality icon. It seems to me that all Mac icons look amazing. I find that Windows icons can really look crappy a lot of the time. Mac users and Developers really do spend their time making their icons.
