Ma diciamoci la verità, la maggior parte di essi sono pesantucci, soprattutto se non abbiamo un computer molto veloce.

Allora ti consiglio quello che io definisco il riproduttore migliore in assoluto: Media Player Classic abbreviato spesso in MPC, generalmente è un file eseguibile singolo, legge e riproduce i video che è una meraviglia, supporta numerosi formati e codec, anche DVD, può caricare sottotitoli e così via.

Se ti mancano dei codec ti consiglio di scaricare il pacco Combined Community Codec Pack che li possiede tutti e contiene al suo interno Media Player Classic Home Cinema (una versione vagamente differente del programma, ma tranquillo è uguale).

My inaugural post, a lengthy history (personal and generally) of MP3 players, was meant to lay the foundation for this post.  This shorter post.

MP3 player.  Doesn’t just roll off the tongue, does it?  And isn’t it funny how the word “iPod” has become synonymous with MP3 playing devices?  The same way a band-aid is both a bandage and a brand name.  The power of success, eh?  But what exactly does MP3 mean in the first place and is it important?  Well, let’s take a look!

MP3 is actually a shortened version of something else, which also doesn’t roll off the tongue:  MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3.  And we can make this even longer by turning MPEG into Moving Pictures Experts Group.  You can begin to see why “MP3″ took off.

MP3 is a codec, which is a piece of software that compresses and then decompresses (the “co” and “dec” of codec) data.  In this particular instance we are discussing the compression and decompression of data related to a file of music; a song.  MP3 is just one of many codecs that exist in the consumer electronics field as related to digital audio.  Some are open source and some are proprietary.  Some are lossless and some are lossy.  Isn’t this fun?  Even more weird terms to wrap our heads around, but I imagine if you are here, at this blog, you probably already know something about these terms and as such I won’t bother to explain what you already know (and if you don’t know you will find wikipedia and google to be your best friend).

What I really want to get to in this blog is what I call codec snobbery.  The notion that one codec is superior to another and that to use any other codec is simply a waste of time and shows you to be a fool who doesn’t understand anything about digitizing music.

Much is written about the various codecs in the market place and why one is better…no….superior to the others.  There are those who swear by open source codecs like Ogg Vorbis and FLAC.  Why be roped into someone’s proprietary mess when you can be open source?  Well, because the vast majority of MP3 players don’t support either Ogg Vorbis or FLAC…and neither do the mainstream digital audio software players (think iTunes, Windows Media Player, etc.)

Are there advantages to going open source?  Sure.  It’s free.  But last time I checked I’m not paying anything to download and install Windows Media Player or iTunes.  There is no cost to me to do such, so I’m not really certain I understand how these free and open source codecs are of some great advantage.  I mean, if they sounded notably better than the more well-known codecs (AAC as used by iTunes, WMA as used by Windows Media Player) then one might be able to make a better argument, but they don’t really sound any better than any other codec in the great scheme of things.

Of course, there are those who swear by AAC, WMA and MP3, which is fine as well.  But I think these folks are mostly steered into their given codec not by some allegiance to the codec itself, but by the player they purchase.  The iPod.  The Walkman.  The Creative Labs.  The Archos.  They encode their CDs in whatever codec their player will play and their software will recognize.  It really is that simple.  As a matter-of-fact, I think it would not be unreasonable to assume that better than 80% of all MP3 player owners wouldn’t even know what is a codec, much less at what bit rate they are encoding their music on their computer.

Yet there are experts and writers out there who want to convince us that FLAC is the only way to go or that WMA VBR (Variable Bit Rate) at a bit rate setting greater than 256 is the bees knees.  But short of using complicated and precise measuring devices to actually “listen” to music encoded by these various codecs at various bit rates and alternating between Constant Bit Rate (CBR) and VBR there is no way to know which sounds best.  And even then I would swear that blind listening tests using tens of thousands of listeners would be the only way to fully understand and appreciate which codec at what bit rate is the best.  And I think it’s pretty obvious this isn’t going to happen.

So what does one do?

For many folks they do nothing.  They go out and purchase the MP3 player they want.  They go home and use the software they like best that will work with their given purchase.  They probably don’t know how to change the bit rate and have never heard of VBR or CBR.  And they probably couldn’t care less.  It makes the whole issue of which is the best codec a horribly moot point.

I mean..think about it.  The iPod, while clearly the run away success of MP3 players, isn’t the best sounding MP3 player on the market.  Never has been.  Will probably never be either.  But that hasn’t hurt its sales in the slightest, has it?  Its success was built upon either criteria.  In other words it sounds good enough.

The average consumer (and by “average” I mean something like 99%) doesn’t care or probably even know about codecs.  They buy the MP3 playing device they want and they want it because it looks cool.  Or is popular and will impart popularity upon them.  Or something.  But it is something other than codec support.

So when the experts tell us we need to be concerned about such matters because it might make an infinitesimal difference in the quality of the sound of the music, I think they should sod off.  Unless the sound quality is noticeably better and can be had without any extra work on my part (having to find special software being the big one), then I don’t want to hear about it.  I’ll stick to WMA or AAC and be happy that I can quickly and easily create music for on the go.

I have got a flash videoclip that was ok but wanted to add music before publishing it on the company video channel on YouTube.  I had not the master file from the camera but only the edited flash .flv file. I tried to load the flash file into Pinnacle12 for adding the music but it doesn’t accept .flv files as input so googling [a lot] around I found an interesting article Flash Video Editing Made Simple where I got the link to RichFLV Video Editor that appears to be a free AdobeAir plug-in that installs automatically AdobeAir also. Within RichFLV I should have been able to edit my .flv file importing an mp3 music file and merging them together, but I hadn’t handy any mp3 file suitable for the job, since I always use the free music files available inside Pinnacle12.

Actually I could have probably been able to create an audio mp3 file by Pinnacle (more or less as the music background of an “ampty “video file) and import it into RichFLV, but I didn’t think of it and so I started looking for a different solution to my problem.

Inside the same Flash Video Editing Made Simple web page I found the link to download Super Video Converter and started a few trials to convert my .flv file into a format accepted as input by Pinnacle12 (avi, mpg, mov). I got error converting .flv into .mov or .mpg while Super worked fine converting .flv into .avi. Nonetheless I got stuck because Pinnacle12 could play the resulting .avi file in the preview window but not load in the editing (album) area.

Long story short I managed to have a .avi file that Pinnacle12 was able to load and edit with following setting for Super:

Then I have been able to add music inside Pinnacle12 and create a .flv file as output

Nowadays everything is in video format. We’ve of course got tons of video uploading sites, such as YouTube, Google Video, Revver, Blip.tv, but we also use it for a lot, not just entertainment. We use it to learn and to teach, for example. And lastly, it’s more and more present these days, what with mobile devices and general portability. We like to carry videos around on our iPods or BlackBerrys.

But sometimes you find an obscure video format, or one that your device isn’t compatible with, and that’s when you get trouble. You need a converter.

Introducing SUPER. SUPER converter, which stands for Simplified Universal Player Encoder & Renderer is a godsend. It can convert video, audio, and pictures. It features over thirty video formats, and over ten audio formats.

There’s a lot of software out there with many options, but no usability. Too much confusion. SUPER makes it easy by breaking everything up into categories and clearly identifying everything. You can choose to crop, to stretch, to use HQ, to use a certain audio format, to leave the audio out, the list goes on.

If you’re always watching videos and you need to convert some, look no further. SUPER is quite aptly named.

Don’t forget that if Quicktime is asking for a codec, you can look in the Info (command-i) about the movie to find out which codec it wants. (e.g. Meridian, DV100, etc.)

To obtain mp3 encoding capability in VirtualDub on a Windows 7 64-Bit system.

Programs:
VirtualDub 1.9.7
LAME mp3 Encoder

Guide:
Step 1: Unzip all the files in VirtualDub to its own folder.
Step 2: Right-Click on LameACM.inf and click ‘Install’

Restart VirtualDub, if you still aren’t able to access LAME mp3 encoding please continue…

Step 3: Go to Start and search for and run ‘regedit’
Step 4: Go to the registry path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SOFTWARE>Microsoft>Windows NT>CurrentVersion>Drivers32
Step 5: Change the entry labled: ‘msacm.l3acm’
From “C:\WINDOWS\system32\l3codeca.acm”, to “C:\WINDOWS\system32\l3codecp.acm”

Restart VirtualDub. If that didn’t work. I apologize this solution isn’t for you.

It always seems like there’s a standard, and then a third party comes along and makes it ten times better. Windows Media player is really great, but it doesn’t support enough formats. Same with Quicktime. The solution? VLC.

VLC Media Player is a great player. It’s got a good interface, and support many formats. It can play audio or video, as well as DVDs. It can be resized everywhere, while playing, with the vdieo adjusting automatically. But best of all, you can apply skins!

Ubuntu nelle sue diverse varianti (Kubuntu e Xubuntu le più note) è senza dubbio la distribuzione GNU/Linux che ha fatto più proseliti, soprattutto tra i newbie, per la sua estrema semplicità d’uso e per il suo “parco” software vastissimo.

Per Kubuntu potete visitare il sito dove è postato l’annuncio ufficiale di rilascio ed un (breve tour) che illustra le caratteristiche salienti di questa versione. Il sito per il download è questo.

In modo simile anche per Xubuntu potete leggere l’annuncio, visualizzare un breve tour grafico e quindi passare al download.

Su Kubuntu in versione live vengono riconosciute e montate le eventuali partizioni windows presenti, così fin da subito si ha la possibilità di aprire i propri file per testare le applicazioni presenti in questa distribuzione, non invece su Xubuntu.

La scelta di Kubuntu è adatta all’utente che sa quello che fa, quella di Xubuntu è invece adatta all’utente che preferisce non correre il rischio di rovinare il file system preesistente sul pc.

Dopo una rapida “esplorazione” ci si renderà conto che non è possibile visualizzare correttamente siti con contenuto flash, come ad esempio YouTube, e nemmeno potersi godere i propri file musicali ed i propri filmati.

Karmic Koala infatti non include i principali codecs audio e video (nemmeno flash) e nemmeno driver proprietari, quali ad esempio quelli della scheda video.

Ciò potrebbe far scoraggiare l’utente che sia avvicina per la prima volta al mondo GNU/Linux, ma occorre sottolineare che bastano pochi interventi perché Karmic Koala diventi perfettamente “usabile”.

I filmati che vi propongo servono soltanto a mostrare l’impatto visivo di queste due distribuzioni e fare una carrellata dei principali software che mettono fin da subito a disposizione.

Le durate dei filmati non corrispondono a quelle reali, infatti prima di postarli ho preferito cancellare i “tempi morti” di durata eccessiva, anche perché per la registrazione mi sono servito di macchine virtuali che non emulano a dovere le caratteristiche hardware dei pc in circolazione.

Kubuntu

Kubuntu e Xubuntu sono senza dubbio delle ottime distribuzioni (adatte soprattutto a chi proviene da windows) e le consiglio caldamente. Da quanto vi ho appena descritto, è chiaro che un intervento, seppur minimo, dell’utente è richiesto perché il sistema si adatti alle nostre esigenze.

Sekedar bagi bagi info, K-lite Mega Codec versi terbaru yaitu versi 5.4.0 sudah dirilis kemarin, software ini wajib bagi yang suka liat-liat film. Software ini mampu memainkan hampir semua jenis file multimedia.

Download Klite Mega Codec 5.4.0

MPEG Streamclip for Mac or Windows is a CHAMP at converting the H.264 footage! And it’s FREE.

One of the most common questions that I get from people regarding the new breed of HD-DSLR cameras is “What’s your post-workflow?”

Truth be told – most of it is actually extremely straightforward.  It does get fancy when you try to do some high end stuff- but that workflow applies to maybe one percent of people – so here is the simple workflow:

Simply put – all you need to do is to convert the native footage from the Canon 5D / 7D / 1D MKIV from the AVC H.264 format to a format that your computer and software will support.

For me it’s simple given that I work with Final Cut Studio – I work with Apple’s ProRes codec.  What this means is that I simply convert the H.264 footage to the higher quality (and less compressed) ProRes format. (Avid supposedly supports the H.264 format natively according to some post houses that I’ve worked with – but I admit to not being an Avid or Adobe Premier expert by any means.)

Why do you need to do this?  Well simply put – most software does not support the editing of H.264 footage natively – some do.  Final Cut Pro doesn’t – you’ll find that it can crash every few minutes – or worst – every few seconds.   You’ll find that the video is extremely choppy – and that it can be close to impossible to do frame-accurate edits.   The reason is simple:  the computer has to decompress this (compressed) footage on the fly.  And that takes a lot of GPU (Graphic card) power.    Older MacBook Pros and even the top end Mac Pro tower with the most expensive graphics card can choke on this task… ironically you’ll find that the new MacBook Pros do much better than the top-end Mac Pros… and that’s just plain silly.  Why?  Well the MacBook Pros have a H.264 chip built onto their graphics card!   This helps play all of the iTunes m4v files (movie files) more smoothly.

So how do YOU do it?

Well, there are MANY ways to do this.   You can use Final Cut Studio’s Compressor software – I create droplets and drop my files onto them.  Very very easy.

Compressor “Droplets” allow you to simply drag and drop your Canon files onto the icons… the software does all of the rest.

I’ve also converted the file within Final Cut Pro using either the Batch Export feature – or even the media manager menu.

Compressor is good – and easy.  But some of you may not own Final Cut Studio… so what do you do?

Well I recommend you look into the utility that has quickly become my absolute favorite way of converting my footage:  Squared 5’s MPEG Streamclip. Not only is it extremely easy to use (see Chris Fenwick’s most excellent video tutorial here) but it’s also often faster than Compressor and is much cheaper…

Much cheaper!

It’s FREE.  And frankly I don’t know why.  Because I would gladly shell out $100 bucks or more for this app. It’s that good.

I’ve found that the app is extremely fast (faster than compressor!) – it allows me to point it to folders and it will ignore all of the THM files and CR2s in the folder – and off it goes.   You can pause it in the middle of a re-compression batch should you need to shut down your laptop or unplug your external hard drive.  Basically it’s a dream.

Lately I find myself using two codecs most often – Apple ProRes 422 has always been my gold standard, and recently w/ the new FCP Studio I find myself using Apple ProRes Proxy – to do quick edits on my laptop.

Obviously – the size of the de-compressed files will depend on what codec (fancy word for video format) that you chose.  ProRes 444 will be much bigger than ProRes 422 or ProRes Proxy obviously.  Apple details the sizes somewhere on the web if you’re real curious. (OK HERE it is…) and in even more detail HERE.

Basically – to keep it simple – if you’re just getting started – just follow Chris Fenwick’s tutorial above – or decompress you H.264 footage into ProRes 422.  And you’ll be all set to get going in all of this.  Remember to always keep the ORIGINAL footage somewhere safe in case some incredible new technology comes out years from now – but work off of the ProRes files from that point on.

The codec works…and it doesn’t come at the cost of idle system resources.  That’s what makes this version a true winner in my eyes–the fact that it lets me watch QuickTime in my browser without the overhead of installing the full application.

It took me a while to notice the impact this app had, but it became clear on Saturday morning.  I was trying to watch some quicktime videos of the mac/pc ads (inspiration and guidance for my PC costume).  I did this on my netbook, where I hadn’t installed the codec..and the video wouldn’t play.  Grump: I was watching them a day earlier on the computer with QT Lite installed.

Luckily QT Lite was only a quick install away.  Well worth it at this point.

Raffael Rueckert is a DJ/Producer/remix artist from Cape Town. He’s remixed many of South Africa’s top alternative artists like AKING, Kid of Doom, Desmond and the Tutus to name a few.

His many projects include being a part of an electro synth-rock band called Tigerstrike, as well as being a part of a live act representing the individual and collaborative work of CoDeC and The Sound known as LAN.

He started out making music as “I’ve always been amazed at how different songs could create different feelings. When I started playing I realised that I could now make my own sounds that made me feel things; since then I’ve been hooked on creating and playing music, it’s like something I have to do, something inside me. I tried stopping once, which was terrible, I was so miserable.” He says reflectively “when I was a kid when my parents bought me a keyboard for my birthday. I’d sit for hours and figure out the melodies of any song I could remember, and even making up my own ones. I remember jamming away for hours trying out different combinations of beats, melodies and chords, I loved it so much!”

He knew the guys from LAN and Tigerstrike “through the skate/rock scene a few years back. Gerald (CoDeC) and I used to play together in a band called New World Inside which later became Fokofpolisiekar. Brett (from Tigerstrike) and I met in Joburg while on tour with one of my first punk bands. I only knew Jonathan and Chris vaguely until we started being in a band.”

He doesn’t have a favourite artist to remix as “every remix is different and they are all cool in their own ways. Some come together very quickly, like in one session even, others could end up taking a month, but it’s always new and interesting and fun.”

“It gets a bit crazy being in 2 bands as well as remixing songs” I am always really busy rehearsing, recording, remixing, DJing, photo shoots or promoting. It is a good kind of crazy though, doing something you love!”

“There’s new stuff happening all the time… a new Tigerstrike track has just been recorded, which will hopefully be released as a single along with a music video, so that’s coming up next, as well as more shows for Tigerstrike in September and October. I’ve also been very focused on the technical setup of LAN and promoting CodecVSTheSound and have neglected The Sound a bit, so I’m focusing on that a bit more by getting my music out through twitter and my blog site.”

He would like to expand and hopefully be “a really great producer, someone who can make anything sound really great. I’d like to meet a lot of artists and assist them in reaching their goals, and also help them expand their sound…my dream is to own a warehouse and turn it into a studio / music lounge, perhaps even a live venue. I’d have equipment set up and work on recording and producing artists and bands during the day and partying at night.”

His favourite song that he made with the two bands he is in, LAN and Tigerstrike, would have to be “Tigerstrike’s Disappear. It’s got that dark angst-driven feel to it, which I love, and the lyrics make sense to me.”

When performing, seeing people enjoying themselves, being part of something and being able to give those people something makes performing worthwhile. The anticipation building up to the show is also really exciting. It’s such a rush feeding off the energy of the crowd-having people sing your lyrics back to you…”

The funniest thing that happened at a shows “more in the rock bands I’ve played in (such as New World Inside) was when people would wipe out due to too much alcohol. I remember certain people having a little too much and then jumping around and falling over while playing. I still laugh out loud when I remember those incidents, it’s really funny. Once while I was DJing some dodgy drunk guy tried to stage dive and everyone just moved out of the way. Luckily he got away with some minor bruises, but the whole thing was really funny…”

A presença de um cirurgião-dentista nas equipes médicas de clubes e eventos esportivos pode ser a garantia de uma carreira de sucesso para o atleta? Esta foi uma das questões centrais discutida durante O 1° Fórum de Odontologia do Esporte para Atletas de Alto-Rendimento, que aconteceu em São Paulo, no dia 27 de outubro.

No Brasil, há a necessidade de uma conscientização das instituições de saúde, educação e esportivas para que sejam feitas campanhas públicas visando estimular os praticantes de esportes e, a comunidade em geral, a uma prática esportiva segura. Precisamos também avançar na questão do atendimento odontológico obrigatório durante as atividades esportivas para assegurar que os procedimentos imediatos frente a um traumatismo dentário sejam adotados. Novas pesquisas mais abrangentes devem ser realizadas neste campo, enfatizando as condições de saúde bucal de atletas amadores e profissionais. Durante o 1° Fórum de Odontologia do Esporte para Atletas de Alto-Rendimento, o Dr. Hiroshi Suzuki, professor da Universidade de Nihon do Japão, falará, pela primeira vez, ao público brasileiro sobre as contribuições que a Odontologia vem trazendo à prática esportiva no Japão. Além de Suzuki, os participantes do evento terão a oportunidade de ouvir o médico Dr.Wagner Castropil, ortopedista, especializado em Medicina do Esporte, que divide com o público sua experiência pessoal-profissional com o esporte. Entre 1985 e 1992, Castropil foi atleta da seleção Brasileira de Judô. Foi também integrante da Equipe Olímpica Brasileira em três olimpíadas: Barcelona (1992), como atleta, Atenas (2004) e Pequim (2008), como médico.“Para enriquecer o debate, convidamos também atletas que darão o seu testemunho sobre a importância da Odontologia do Esporte em suas trajetórias profissionais. Contaremos com a presença de Fábio Vanini, atleta de handebol do Esporte Clube Pinheiros e da Seleção Brasileira de Handebol; Cassius Duran, atleta olímpico brasileiro de saltos ornamentais; e por fim, Joon Sok Seo, nadador paraolímpico, especialista nas provas 50m, 100m e 4×50m livre, 50m costas e 50m borboleta, que além de atleta, também é cirurgião-dentista”, informa o cirurgião-dentista Alexandre Jun Ueda, coordenador do CODEC, Centro de Odontologia do Esporte do CETAO.
