How to Crack a Bar Code

The bar code patent celebrated its 57th birthday this year. According to the Telegraph, a couple of Drexel grad students came up with the bar code as a novel way to uniformly encode product information on goods. Initially, Norman Joseph Woodland and Bernard Silver envisioned the bar code as a series of concentric circles rather than parallel lines, but in 1974 a pack of Wrigley’s chewing gum began the first item sold with the coding style we recognize today.

It isn’t too difficult to read a bar code to see what numbers those black and white lines represent. For the common Code 39 bar code, Wired’s how-to guide recommends following the decoding method devised by crackerjack student Jonathan Washington. After testing out the method myself, I can attest to its simplicity.

Basically, you look at the bar code as a series of narrow or wide black lines with narrow or wide white spaces between. Using Washington’s technique, a narrow black line translates to a 0 and a wide line stands for 1. Narrow white spaces are simply place holders between those 0s and 1s, and a wide white space is a dash (-).

These are the numeric codes you need to know, thanks to Wired:

•   0 = 00-110
•   1 = 10-001
•   2 = 01-001
•   3 = 11-000
•   4 = 00-101
•   5 = 10-100
•   6 = 01-100
•   7 = 00-011
•   8 = 10-010
•   9 = 01-010
•   * = 0-110

Notice the asterisk at the end of that column. Each bar code number begins and ends with an asterisk, so that should give you a head start decoding.

The UPC code that you see on packaging isn’t quite the same as a standard bar code. As I learned from How UPC Bar codes Work, manufacturers obtain unique bar codes by first filing a request with the Uniform Code Council that generates and sells companies their own codes. In addition to the manufacturer code, the UPC code also details the specific item (i.e. 6 oz. frozen orange juice concentrate). Snopes also explains that the first three numbers of UPC codes translate to country codes; however, the country refers to the company headquarters and not necessarily where the item was originally produced.
