სტატიის ავტორი: academic_punk

The Codex Gigas (English: Giant Book) is the largest extant medieval manuscript in the world[1]. It was created in the early 13th century in the Benedictine monastery of Podlažice in Bohemia, and is now preserved at the National Library of Sweden in Stockholm, where two librarians are needed to lift it. It is also known as the Devil’s Bible due to a large illustration of the devil on the inside and the legend surrounding its creation.

Codex Gigas – The Devil’s Bible had an hour long show on the National Geographic TV channel and it was also noted in their National Geographic news. A search of the internet produced only a few illustrations from within the book Kungl. biblioteket in Stockholm so I took the best one available of the famous Devil and cleaned it up for better web quality viewing.

The Devil from Codex Gigas

I don’t know what other people see in this picture but I see a clawed monster-man red in tooth and claw with some entrails hanging out of his mouth and the top half of a former human perched on top of his head to form a macabre head ornament. The opposable claws look more like a predatory bird’s talons than human fingers. The extra set of eyes I see as those of a former victim still in the head of the original owner. Or perhaps my following very different rendition is more appealing or scarier.

Devil's face from Codex Gigas

This shows just how different a few selections on the photo effects controls can vary the outcome especially when helped along by my fevered patternicity. This image is cropped from the source, which was from the original site in Sweden, and is probably much closer to the original appearance of the face. The original coloring has faded and been overlain with centuries of haze so the colors I have inserted are problematic. The artifacts removed were only ones of age and the attempt was to show you the image as clearly as it would have been done had the original artist been doing the clean up. There are some clean-;up things which probably chould be done, like reddening the upper lip and reducing the greenish overcast but what bothers me the most is the wide band of light source glare running across the eyes.

I’ve noticed a lot of searches for the Codex Gigas torrent leading people to this site, to their dismay, perhaps, because there’s nothing here but linguistic acrobatics. No longer! I aim to give the public what they seek! I had no luck finding the Codex Gigas after I read that article, but today I did a little digging and found a site that reveals the entire manuscript by way of extremely high resolution photos. I imagine a patient and crafty fella or dame could compile a torrent of this book, but this will suffice for now; I’ve a mind to have a copy of that myself. The content fools me into thinking it’s comprehensible, but not so, thanks to my marked lack of education when it comes to foreign languages, especially one as Bohemian as this. It’s called the Devil’s Bible only because there is a page length drawing of the ol’ splitfoot, in diapers, to boot! More accurately, this book is an historical tome detailing the stories of Israel, and even includes a full copy of both testaments in the Holy Bible. But let’s not detract from its majesty with histrionic fits over semiotics.

Ladies and Gentlemen, heeeeerrreeee’s the Codex Gigas!

La noche oscura,
en las sombras inertes
repta rápido.

La mente en caos,
un suplicante triste
le hace un ruego.

Metamorfosis,

Inútil sueño,
el inútil soñador
Está ardiendo ya.
