I’m sitting in a little coffeeshop in the neighborhood I used to live in. I come up here to work sometimes: it’s one of the few places in DC where there is both decent wireless and a good croissant. So I don’t mind particularly the long-ish trip through Georgetown and up Wisconsin Ave. There used to be a good cafe within walking distance of my apartment, but it closed a few months ago, much to the collective dismay of all the people like me who used to go there and spend $2 on tea so we could sit in a bustly, not-too-loud, sufficiently “indie” place for six hours and stare at our laptops.

I don’t like coming to this shop as much as I used to. After about 9 in the morning it fills up with people doing the normal coffeeshop things, by which I mean they are talking to friends, buying muffins for their kids that are too young still for school, reading, participating in some kind of physics study group, etc. Only one other person here is on a laptop, and I find I resent this a little. The vibe here is not what I want it to be. It reminds me that I’m taking up a whole three-person table with my computer, that if I’m laughing it’s because I read a funny xkcd comic, and that I have headphones in. Why come to this public place and sit alone?

I mean, I have reasons. Counter-intuitively, the noise helps me focus. Like I said, the croissants are pretty good. And if I spend too much time trying to write/work in my apartment, I will eventually be tempted to take a nap, which is impossible here.

I could extend this post into some kind of comment on modernity (aided by the literal name of the shop, up there in the title– that’s not fiction) and it wouldn’t surprise you one bit, I bet. But I’m not sure I have anything more to add right now than that I’m sitting in a place full of people but I’m very much isolated even as I send out a blogpost that you are reading, and that doesn’t seem like a very modern complaint at all. So, you know. Carry on.

Oxford – “a bookish kind of place”

Oxford is a conservative, bookish kind of place where intellectual ideals are the common currency and pursuit of excellence the holy grail.

The Bodleian Library

Old Schools Quadrangle

Was will man mehr?…

Kulinarisches

West Cornwall Pasty Co.

The British Library – The world’s knowledge

The British Library - The world's knowledge

Neben den dauerhaften gibt es auch wechselnde Ausstellungen im Angebot, momentan zum Beispiel die beiden wirklich ansprechend konzipierten Points of View – Capturing the 19th Century in Photographs und In a Bloomsbury Square: T.S. Eliot the Publisher. ^^

Idea Stores – Library Learning Information

The Idea Store proposals are designed to draw all three themes together in a way that captures the best traditions of the library movement and the education sector but presents them in an exciting way, one that draws in new users and retains existing users. The Idea Stores will also be located in a different way – at the heart of our neighbourhood shopping centres, near or beside supermarkets wherever possible. We want a visit to the library and lifelong learning centres to become a regular part of people’s lives – to act as a focus as well as a resource for the whole community. The Idea Stores will engage people our current facilities don’t reach.

idea store ohne "library"

Well, I only have a little over 48 hours to go until my first flight leaves Detroit. I am excited and overwhelmed at the same time. This is my first European adventure, and I certainly have enough stuff to do in the next 2 days to make it busy.

Steven Hagar reported yesterday on the Cannabis Cup Blog that the Cannabis Cup weather forecast calls for temperatures from a high of 54°F on Sunday, Nov. 22, to a low of 47°F on Thursday, Nov. 26. Showers are expected every day of the week. Looks like I should make sure to pack my umbrella. I don’t mind the weather in The Netherlands, even at the worst of time, it is still better than the crap we get here in Michigan. At least my other destinations this year have a better climate. I will be travelling to Las Vegas and the Florida Keys before the end of the year.

A couple of other announcements were made, including a limited seating concert at the Melkweg Old Hall on Nov. 25 at 8 p.m. The first 200 people that show up at the door with a Cannabis Cup judges pass will be admitted. Magic Heart Genies will be moved to the Melkweg Max and will open for Barrington Levy on Wednesday night.

Well, I should be packing something, I hope to see you all in Amsterdam! If you are not attending, I expect to update this blog at least nightly.

Good news has reached us. In the city of Portland the first “Amsterdam” style Cannabis Café has been opened. Portland has (sort of) legalized the possession of Marijuana under an ounce(a little under 30 grams).

The Cannabis Café has opened it’s door at precisely 4:20 p.m. last Friday afternoon and is the first coffee house in Oregon catering to licensed users of medical marijuana.

The new cafe, run by the Oregon branch of NORML, went into operation just weeks after the Justice Department announced that people who use marijuana for medical purposes and those who distribute it to them will not face federal prosecution, provided they act according to state law.

It looks like nearly every other coffeehouse in town, with Wi-Fi access, Coffee, soft drinks, trays of Marsee Bakery pastries and sandwiches. The only difference is that shiny silver Volcano vaporizers are plugged into outlets lining the tiled bar and the familiar smell of medical marijuana patients using their “medicine”.

The comparison to an Amsterdam coffeeshop doesn’t really hold up, as you can’t actually buy your weed IN the Cannabis Café. Anne Saker from oregonlive.com explains:

“The only people permitted in the Cannabis Café are those licensed to smoke who also hold membership in the lobbying group Oregon NORML. Patrons will be charged $5 a day. They can bring their own or smoke donated marijuana. Oregon law says medical marijuana may not be sold.”

Does this mean that for $5 a day a member gets free “donated” weed? So without actually buying the weed you still get to smoke weed? Great!

Below a video of the opening of the Cannabis Café in Portland.

I was sitting down in a cafe to read and noticed something interesting. The walls were bare. All the artworks for sale had disappeared. They usually rotate after a week and another series show up. They are never that bad but never that good also. I don’t want to call them amateur but usually are somewhere between a serious student and someone who has taken the time to try but basically missed the mark. They do qualify as artwork but not artwork in my view. That is my ambigious view that I don’t care to explain. They had disappeared and I had never noticed the walls empty. The walls looked horrible. They were only empty and nothing was wrong with them. Huge walls stretching from where people sat to the ceiling with nothing looked something was needed to be installed and construction was going on. The walls were shocking to me. I had never noticed how a simple wall with a few pieces of odd artworks (for sale) can add atmosphere to a place. I always thought the artwork were the least interesting of the place but without them I realized how much they actually add to the place. They were missing for a few days I assume because some new artworks had arrived next time I got there. These have the work and a second frame with a poem each. I find artists irritating people and what is more irritating is when I am told I am an artist myself. I cannot think of myself as an artist. I guess what bothers me is that I am a perfectioninst and half-ass artworks have features that can be fixed with little effort but are not.

I am finally updating the blog. Its been a few months and for that I am sorry. I have been on a path

I am finally updating the blog. Its been a few months and for that I am sorry. I have been on a path on refocusing some priorities in life, work has changed a few paths, fate has changed a few more, and God is sending me down some other ones I’m not even too sure about yet.

One thing I wanted to type about was specifically yesterday. Jon Acuff’s Stuff Christians Like blog yesterday was just… crazy. I woke up with a feeling. I read his blog about trying to raise 30K by the end of the month to support building a Kindergarten in Vietnam. It was a crazy idea. I decided I need to donate Friday when I get paid.

Something else was speaking to me yesterday as well. God was challenging me to do more. At first I thought He was referring to the donating on SCL. Then as the day went on I started having these visions coming into my head. About ways to grow a ministry locally. Ways to help the Underground Cafe establish a new home. Ways to maybe help a church plant another location. Ways to give myself and share in making a difference in the community by serving Christ.

The scramble of ideas has become more clear. I refined an idea for a start up coffee house/art gallery/community outreach/concert venue/church-that’s-not-a-church building. Its far from a unique idea, I’m sure. But I can’t think of anything quite like it around here. To borrow a phrase I found in researching, its ” an office for creatives. ” Not just arts, but for people passionate about their craft, be it photography, jewelry, art, music; but for people who are passionate about follwing in the ways of Jesus, and in trying to help invest, and grow the kingdom at the same time.

Not a bad idea, right? The possibilities. IF only it can happen.

I dont know a few things as of yet. Mostly, I don’t know where exactly top begin. I don’t know how to bring the resources together. I don’t know the first thing about starting a church, or how to pitch to a church that may want to expand. I don’t know the building (but I thing south or east sides locations are prime). I don’t know where all the money will come from, or who will even run it. But Yesterday the idea was presented and refined for me, and I think its one worth following up on.

So if not me, then who? Well, I do know that God is behind me on this one.

Part of faith is being tested and believing in what is unseen.

Part of it is obedience.

Part of it is knowing that impossible is nothing with God.

So by the end of yesterday something crazy happened. That end of the month 30K goal on SCL was reached in ONE DAY. And I woke up with my mind focused on going for my run and drinking coffee, and spent part of the day scouting suitable buildings.

And if SCL can raise 30k through social networking in ONE day, I think I can somehow coordinate this.

John 15:5 – I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing.

Outras perspectivas do pátio interno do Begijnhof.

Valeu a experiência!

Less than 2 weeks to go till the start of the 22nd High Times Cannabis Cup!! I am very excited, a little nervous, and a bit overwhelmed. I pulled my suitcases out of storage, and over the next week or so I will start packing. Clothes first, then electronics and computer equipment. Cameras and phones will be the last to be packed.

This weekend I also hope to finalize my itinerary for the 8 nights I will be in Amsterdam. The first day I am there is going to be by far my most hectic day. I arrive in Holland on Saturday, November 21. My flight lands just shortly before noon. From the airport I have to pick up my mobile phone from the rental center, make my way to the hotel to check in around 2 p.m. and still make it to the PowerZone before 5 p.m. to pick up my judges pass. This seems to be the only way to even come close to being able to hit all the coffeeshops. If I can get my pass and get a little head start Saturday evening, I will be ready for the kick-off on Sunday.

I hope this trip will be as amazing as I expect it will be. This is my first trip to Europe and I plan on making the most of my time there. I will post more as my itinerary becomes more solid.

I thought of this not-so-novel idea when I was previewing this Friday’s movie (that which will not be revealed now, but does tie into this week’s theme of feeling *alive* : ). Something that struck me was this beautiful, tight knit relationship the heroine of the film has with her neighbors. They care for one another, know each other’s intimate joys and pain, and most every day, share coffee. This got me thinking about this simple thing of sharing coffee. Of meeting with friends or neighbors simply to share a coffee, and nothing else. There is this wonderful opportunity– of time and connection that occurs when we aren’t pre-occupied by the busy-ness of our lives, or the preparing of a meal or event, that is typically associated with gathering . It’s sort of a break from that busy-ness, to just connect without agenda. It’s hard to make time for this seemingly ‘extraneous’ activity of meeting for coffee… but when we actually do… how wonderful it is. Now that’s, the stuff of life. I’m now thinking of all the people I could share a good long coffee date with…

We had a mission, a purpose with our trip: The van Gogh museum. Of course it took us half the day to get there what with the detour, the iron lizards, the stop at the coffeeshop and a lunch break at Three Sisters.

The weather was relentless yesterday with heavy winds throwing our umbrellas around but what tourist was ever stopped by a litte bad weather?

Me, Christina and a whole chunk of other tourists had to pose in the I AMsterdam sign at the museumplein. Of course by then we were getting a bit tired and wet even though umbrellas and rainponchos (Pauliinas kermitgreen poncho keept flying up so she was not really keept dry much by it). Lucky for us we had made it and had only to figure out where the entrance was (again, tourists, haha).

Museum was nice. A bit to much people though, like masses of them crowding infront of the pages so it was hard to actually see anything. I guess a rainy day, add a sunday to that, makes a perfect day at the museum. A little less wet with a begining hunger we went out on a hunt for dinner. Amsterdam is beautifull at night.

Would happilly walk into a coffeeshop to buy an umbrella. To my defense it said souverniers – the fact that there was signs saying coffeeshop on both sides of “souverniers” I completely ignored. You see when on a mission I only see what it is I am looking for and yesterday it was an umbrella. Sure I did find it a bit weird that people where sitting drinking beers in the entrance (Christina said they were all smoking I must have turned on tunnel vision cause I completely missed that detail) and the souverniershop looked more like a shop for a football team or something so I was allready turning to leave when a woman asked what I was looking for. “Uhm, do you have umbrellas?” yes they did but only big ones. With a bulldog on it. So, thinking that I don’t want to offend anyone if it infact was some footiesuporters shop or whatever, I asked if the bulldog stands for anything “Eh, Yeah, he” was the reply I got so I thought uhm ok.

Christina was kind enough to enlight me when I came outside very happy about my new big umbrella. My coffeeshop umbrella. Haha. And of course … that explains the womans responce to me asking what the bulldog stands for.

I’m such a tourist.

The High Times Cannabis Cup is held annually in Amsterdam and is one of the most famous cannabis eve

The High Times Cannabis Cup is held annually in Amsterdam and is one of the most famous cannabis events among cannabis smokers and cannabis-oriented businesses. The public is exposed to a large variety of marijuana strains which they then help to judge. A team of VIP judges decide which seed company brought the best marijuana, while the judges-at-large decide the Cannabis Cup, best new product, best booth, best glass, best hash and best Nederhash.

According to the official Cannabis Cup FAQ the Cup is always held in Amsterdam during the week of Thanksgiving (U.S.). The 22nd Cannabis Cup will be held from November 22nd-26th 2009. Pre-registration begins on November 19th and 20th for those of us who will be in town a few days early. The benefit of early registration is avoiding the long lines that typically form on opening day, and also to get a head start on the coffeeshop crawl. All registration takes place at the PowerZone.

This year there are 29 coffeeshops entered in the Cannabis Cup. There are also 33 seed companies that have submitted their wares to be judged. High Times also reports that there are several stand out companies that have racked up many Cups. The Greenhouse leads the pack with 60 Cups. Barneys and De Dampkring follow with 46 and 23 Cannabis Cups respectively.

Also every year a distinguished member of the marijuana community is inducted into the Counterculture Hall of Fame. This year at the 22nd Cannabis Cup, Thomas King Forcade, the founder of High Times magazine will be inducted into the High Times Counterculture Hall of Fame.

And lets not forget the great music at the Melkweg! This year we will hear great music by Gomez, Slightly Stoopid, Los Marijuanos, Yellowman and Barrington Levy. On Thursday night Jefferson Starship and Quicksilver Messenger Service will play at the Awards Show.

Finally, there is the reason many people attend the Cup. With cultivation seminars held by many of the big players, speeches, movie screenings, book parties, and meet and greets, there is no shortage of things to do at the expo held at the PowerZone. It is a very busy 5 days and nights in Amsterdam.

Less than 3 weeks until the start of the 2009 High Times Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam!! This will be my first time to Amsterdam and my first Cannabis Cup. I have received the confirmation for my judges pass. I will be placing my vote for the best marijuana in the land. There are 29 coffeeshops participating this year, and I would like to sample the marijuana entry for all of them. I would love to judge the hash, but I have a hard time believing that I am going to be able to smoke 29 grams of weed in the 4 days of judging, let alone that much in hashish.

This blog will have pictures, descriptions and my thoughts on each entry that I am able to judge. I hope to be able to post with my BlackBerry using WiFi in the coffeeshops that have it. I will also update the blog every evening with anything that I might not have been able to post due to not having WiFi. I will not have cellular service for my BlackBerry and am going to have to rent a local mobile phone while I am there.

This adventure is something that I have spent most of my entire adult life waiting to do. I have purchased my airline tickets, hotel room and judges pass. I also hope to have a €200/day budget for marijuana and food. Maybe if I can impress enough people with my journalistic skills, I may get some sponsors to help absorb the cost for next years Cup.

My U.S. Airways flight leaves Detroit on Friday, November 20, 2009 and arrives at Schiphol Airport in The Netherlands on Saturday, November 21. My base of operations will be the Best Western Blue Square Hotel. This hotel is outside the city center but it was a fairly inexpensive western style hotel. It also has free WiFi which is pretty important to me. I will be staying in Amsterdam for 8 nights and hope to not only smoke some fine herb, but to also visit some of the cultural attractions the city has to offer.

I hope to see you all there! If you are interested in meeting up to judge a strain, let me know. I am always looking for new friends. I expect to be meeting up with friends from the U.S. and Canada, and hope to meet new smokers from Europe and around the world.

For several years I’ve lived in the Netherlands, and for the people that still don’t know: marijuana is illegal there. But only de iure. Because of the so called “gedoogbeleid” (policy of toleration), the posession and growth of small quantities of the stuff is not prosecuted.

In praxis the drugs are only sold in coffeeshops. This also is subject to the gedoogbeleid, meaning it’s illegal but tolerated. Any self respecting Dutch city has at least one coffeeshop, not just Amsterdam.

I first met Jesse Gonzalez downtown on jury duty. Jesse could pass for Al Pacino’s brother, but this story isn’t about him, it’s about where he led me.

Cheese enchiladas, a grip of rice and beans, tortillas, and a grail awaiting my coffee

The judge broke us for lunch, and we walked up Broadway in downtown San Diego to his market, but we didn’t stop there. He urged me through the stockroom, down a dark hall and into the kitchen of his mother Teresa’s restaurant next door. Soon I was seated at the counter of the 12th and Broadway Coffee Shop with the house specialty before me: a plate of cheese enchiladas drenched in sauce, paired with moist rice and beans, and a steaming mug of coffee being poured.

Plato says the perfect diner exists only as an ideal, but Plato’s dead, and he sure as hell never had Teresa’s homemade salsa. Everything here is coffee-shop eternal, from the room-filling Formica counter (horseshoe-shaped so the luck stays in) to the staple platters on the Mexican-American menu. The north windows open onto Broadway, and the patrons are as diverse as they are seemingly untouched by time. 12th and Broadway is everything a downtown diner should be.

When Jesse put that plate in front of me, I wasn’t even hungry, but after a languid half-hour watching the world come and go, I had licked the plate clean and downed more than three mugs of coffee. Jesse inveigled me into quick service on a produce run for aguacates y tomatoes around the corner at a wholesaler’s, but not before I got a warm peck on the cheek from Teresa as she cradled my face in her hands and told me she loved me.

That’s customer service.

At 83 years old, Theresa runs meals and greets customers like she did the first day she worked here 54 years ago. Jesse’s sister Connie and her husband Larry barely know me, but they confide in me across the counter.

This is a family restaurant, defined: Owned by a family, and run by a family, complete with toddlers weaving between the busy legs behind the counter.

You can have breakfast for lunch here, and on my second visit I ordered a late trucker’s breakfast, one fork-and-spoon-at-noon, hog-choking, double-slabbed delivery of eggs over-easy, crisp and juicy bacon, hash browns that ached potato, side of buttery toast, and of course coffee from that wonderful drip tasting every bit of what must be tens of thousands of cups poured. Once again, I was a good boy and cleaned my plate, leaving only a dribble of coffee and half a piece of buttery white toast, only because I forgot about it.

Jesse in action, making change...not!

Days later I tried the chile rellenos, and found them sweet inside so I trucked some salsa over and stung ‘em. There’s a mushroom-jack omelet for vegetarians, and the chilequiles are crisp, not soggy and dead. Tall burgers abound, and the fries are planks, golden and salty.

Father Rasura from Logan Heights sat next to me for lunch on St. Patrick’s Day. He’s been eating here 40 years, so you know it’s blessed. He and Teresa were born the same year, and they both still read the morning papers at the end of that coffee-shop lunch counter where the luck stays in.

. . . . .

12th and Broadway is cash-only, but you can eat like a constable here for the price of a side of onion rings at Denny’s.
