Não é quarta-feira, mas vamos com o mesmo espírito, arquivo morto, embora seja uma série mediana, tem uma íncrivel seleção de músicas.

Sinopse:
A detetive Lilly Rush (Kathryn Morris, Minority Report) é a única mulher da equipe de homicídios da polícia da Filadélfia, e logo fica responsável em cuidar dos casos arquivados — crimes que nunca foram resolvidos. Agora, ela interroga testemunhas desses crimes, cujas vidas mudaram muito desde então, utilizando as tecnologias atuais e encontrando novas pistas para solucionar os crimes antes impossíveis de serem solucionados. Mas Rush também se prepara para as conseqüências — que seu trabalho irá abrir velhas feridas e talvez leve os suspeitos a cometerem novos crimes.
Sempre que está num beco sem saída, ela pede a ajuda de seu mentor, o tenente Tom Stillman (John Finn). Também em sua equipe estão o detetive Will Jeffries (Thom Barry), que já está na polícia por tempo suficiente para ser o link de Lily com o passado; e o detetive Nick Vera (Jeremy Ratchford), um policial durão que é capaz de fazer de tudo para conseguir uma confissão.

Adam Lambert, J Lo levando um tombo… a transmissão da ABC do American Music Awards foi recheada de acontecimentos. A premiação atraiu 14.2 milhões de telespectadores e fez ótimos 5.5 pontos na demo qualificada 18-49. Essa é a maior audiência da premiação desde 2002 e a melhor demo desde 2004. Por mais menosprezado que seja, o AMA’s foi a terceira premiação mais assistida do ano, perdendo apenas para o Oscar e para o Grammy.

Mesmo com tudo isso, quem venceu a noite foi a… NBC. Pois é. A emissora exibiu seu tradicional Sunday Night Football. O jogo Philadelphia Eagles Vs. Chicago Bears atraiu 15.1 milhões de telespectadores e excelentes 5.6 pontos na demo qualificada.

A CBS invertou a ordem de exibição de ‘Cold Case’ e ‘Three Rivers’ esperando por audiências melhores, mas as coisas não mudaram tanto assim. ‘Cold Case’ (9.2 milhões e 2.o pontos) caiu um pouco em relação a semana passada e ‘Three Rivers’ (7.7 milhões e 1.6 ponto) teve a pior audiência de sua história. A emissora ainda exibiu ‘60 Minutes’ (15.7 milhões e 3.4 pontos) e ‘Amazing Race’ (11.8 milhões e 3.5 pontos).

Já o bloco animado da Fox esteve todo em queda*: ‘The Simpsons’ (7 milhões e 3.3 pontos), ‘Cleveland Show’ (6.5 milhões e 3.3 pontos), ‘Family Guy’ (7.4 milhões e 3.8 pontos) e ‘American Dad’ (5.5 milhões e 2.8 pontos).

Police suspect teen’s ‘02 slaying was gang related

New York (CNN) – Seven years ago, police asked Fabiola Saavedra to view photographs to identify a body they believed to be her 15-year-old sister, Brenda Sierra. She recognized a pair of hoop earrings and knew it was Brenda.

Saavedra had given her sister the earrings, studded with diamonds and sapphires, as a gift a few days earlier.

“Those earrings were on her ears in the photos cops showed me on that horrible Monday,” Saavedra recalled, sobbing.

The remains were discovered that October weekend in 2002 in the San Bernardino National Forest, some 50 miles from their home in East Los Angeles, California.

Carrying a backpack, Sierra left her house at 7 a.m. October 18 to walk the five blocks to her best friend’s house. Her friend’s mother planned to take the two sophomores to school together. She never arrived at her friend’s house. No one knew Brenda was missing for most of the day because a teacher who took attendance mistakenly marked her as present.

Cold Case messo al posto del fallimentare Three Rivers non migliora le cose. In calo la domenica FOX di serie animate.

  Non lo avevamo ancora incontrato, nemmeno in occasione del suo matrimonio, ed ora è arrivato il momento di conoscere il papà di Lily (Alyson Hannigan). Ad interpretarlo sarà l’attore Chris Elliott (King of the Hill, Tutti amano Raymond) e scopriremo come una sua strana ossessione lo abbia portato a non avere esattamente un buon rapporto con la figlia. Chris Elliott è solo un altro dei tanti ospiti di questa quinta stagione della serie che vedrà nei prossimi mesi anche Joanna Garcia (Privileged, Gossip Girl), Amanda Peet (Jack & Jill, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip) e che culminerà con Rachel Bilson (The O.C., Chuck) nel tanto atteso 100esimo episodio.
• Oprah Winfrey progetta un nuova serie con HBO
  Oprah Winfrey sembra avere molti progetti in preparazione per il futuro. La sua casa di produzione Harpo Productions (Il colore viola, Beloved, The Oprah Winfrey Show)  ha siglato un accordo con la HBO per produrre una nuova serie che si preannuncia molto piccante. Racconterà infatti di questa donna di Los Angeles che lascia la sua vita perfetta a Santa Monica, abbandonando marito e figli, per iniziare le sue avventure tra fantasie segrete e desideri repressi. Il pilot sarà scritto da Erin Cressida Wilson (Secretary). Questa sarà solo la prima di altre serie e miniserie che la Harpo produrrà insieme alla HBO.
• Cougar Town si ferma
  Non spaventatevi! Non si parla di cancellazione. La produzione della sit-com Cougar Town interpretata da Courteney Cox (Friends, Dirt) è stata fermata dalla ABC per venire incontro ad alcune esigenze di carattere familiare dell’attrice. Ci sono altri tre episodi già girati e dopo il telefim si fermerà fino a data da destinarsi.
• Katee Sackhoff ospite a “The Big Bang Theory”
  Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica, Nip/Tuck) sarà ospite nell’episodio in onda questa sera di The Big Bang Theory. L’attrice sarà impegnata in alcune scene con Howard (Simon Helberg) e interpreterà la sua donna “sci-fi” dei sogni.
• Abby Sciuto arriva a Los Angeles
  Ormai i crossover regnano in questa stagione televisiva. Dopo il successo di quello Grey’s Anatomy/Private Practice che ha risollevato di molto gli ascolti della seconda e quello tra le tre serie CSI della settimana scorsa, è arrivato il momento di NCIS. Anche se non si tratta di un vero crossover (quello arriverà in primavera), domani nello spin-off NCIS: Los Angeles apparirà il personaggio di Abby Sciuto (Pauley Perrette) direttamente dalla serie madre. Gli ospiti del programma della De Filippi erano Francesco Totti e Claudio Baglioni. Di quello di Giusti era ospite soltanto Emanuele Filiberto Di Savoia.

Su RaiDue è andata l’ultima puntata della sesta stagione di Cold Case che ha raccolto un ascolto di 2 milioni e 778 mila telespettatori con uno share dell’11.48%

Il programma di divulgazione scientifica Ulisse – il piacere della scoperta, in onda su RaiTre ha raccolto 2 milioni e 57 mila telespettatori con uno share del 9.31%

Il film 58 minuti per morire in onda su Rete4 ha guadagnato 1 milione e 514 mila telespettatori con uno share del 7.02%

Over the course of 13 episodes in 1993-1994, Cress Williams added drama, humor, athleticism and, perhaps most importantly, color to Beverly Hills 90210.  As D’Shawn Hardell, we saw Williams challenge Brandon (Jason Priestley), woo Donna (Tori Spelling) and show off some pretty smooth skills on the basketball court.  Since then, I’ve had the pleasure of seeing Williams appear on one of my favorite non-teen drama shows, Prison Break.

Williams was kind enough to discuss both with me:

TeenDramaWhore: When you joined Beverly Hills 90210 way back in October 1993, were you familiar with the show?

Cress Williams: I knew the show existed, but I had never seen the show. After I got the job I watched an episode. I was in the middle of finishing college, so I didn’t watch a lot of TV.

TDW: Your last appearance was just over a year later.  Did you keep up with the show after you left?

Williams: Other than watching it that one time to get a sense of it, I never really watched it again. After I finished on the show, I was done with school and fully involved in life and career.

TDW: On the surface, D’Shawn was just a basketball player who hassled Brandon.  In reality, you brought some much-needed diversity to the show.  Did that cross your mind at all?

Williams: Most definitely. I knew there wasn’t really any people of color on the show. In fact, when I met the assistant casting director at a little seminar before ever auditioning for the show, I pretty much blew it off because I didn’t think I had much of a chance of being on a show like that.

TDW: Are you actually skilled at basketball or was it the “magic of television”?

Williams: Basketball was and is my favorite sport. When I was younger I played a lot. So at the time of doing the show, I was in good shape and played it a lot. All the basketball stuff was me, not movie magic.

TDW: Do you have a favorite memory or episode?

Williams: 90210 was my first professional job, so all of it was a new experience for me. Mainly I just remember being a trained actor and knowing about acting, but not knowing about acting on television. Everyday was a learning experience.

TDW: Are you still in touch with the cast?

Williams: Not really.

TDW: Last year, you were on another one of my favorite shows, Prison Break.  What was it like joining a series that you know is in its last season?

Williams: Like 90210, I have done a lot of work on shows that had been in production for a while. I know how to step in and fit in on the fly. I really enjoyed playing a character so different from me and what I have played in the past.

TDW: Did you have to catch up on the complicated back story and conspiracy?

Williams: Not really. My character was a hired gun who was simply called in to clean up. A lot of the crew were big fans of the show, so they helped to give me any back story I needed.

TDW: You played a hit man, who ironically had his own unexpected death.  How do you approach a character like that?

Williams: Well, I saw the character as a man who didn’t really do what he did because he enjoyed it. I saw him as someone who killed because it was simply a part of who he is. He took no pleasure in it, and he never took it personal. It was all business. He was so good at what he did because he had a distance from what he was doing. I felt like if he could, he would love to be normal, but he couldn’t change who he was. So I tried to keep what I did acting-wise very simple.

TDW: What projects are you working on now?

Williams: Recently I just finished an episode of Cold Case, which [aired] in October. I am currently working on writing a future TV series of my own with a couple of friends. I hope it makes it to the small screen someday.

There was an inspiring story by Dan Barry in today’s “New York Times.” It’s on page A12 and titled “In Prison, Playing Just to Kill Time and Just Maybe to Help Solve a Murder.”

Yes, this blog entry is heavy but it’s also so danged intriguing about thuglife.

A couple near Columbia, South Carolina had a grown son who was working in a store called Superbikes Motorsports and he and three others were shot dead. The police have few leads and have let it go “cold case.” The parents have not. God bless everloving parents like these.

THERE’S A LOT OF INFORMATION INSIDE A PRISON. That’s the real kicker to this story. Knowing prisoners sit around playing cards a lot, these parents print up poker cards asking for leads. The cards have photos of murder victims in South Carolina. The ace of spades reads “Brian Lucas: Unsolved Homicide.” It gives some facts about the victim and the crime and then it gives a phone number for the prisoners to provide tips that might help solve the crimes.

So how’s this relate to Christmas? The father of Brian Lucas, who came up with this innovative approach is quoted as saying, “We would have talked to Santa Claus if we could.”

YES. YES. A thousand times YES. Anybody reading this know anything about Brian Lucas murder? What a great Christmas present it would make for his tirelessly probing parents if you could bring them any clarity about their loss.

And, how about a gift of cards like this created for other states’ prisons? As Mr. Barry writes, “Read em and weep.”

No, not the angry cougar on the right hand side.  The hottie on the left.  That’s Liz White portraying Annie Cartwright on the UK version (and clearly the superior version) of “Life on Mars”.  She’s not technically a cop, she’s a WPC.  It’s about all women could do via the police force in the 70’s in Britain.  Great show, check it out.  Don’t go by the TERRIBLE Americanized version.  (And let’s get one thing clear, I have no qualms with cougars.  Hot ones, anyway.  Cougars need love too.  Hot cougars.)

This is Keeley Hawes (voice of Lara Croft in the Tomb Raider video games).  She’s Detective Alex Drake in the “Life on Mars” spin-off, “Ashes to Ashes” which takes place in the ’80s.  There are some really great photos of her she did when she was younger in bondage and various stages of undress.  I’d post em, but I’m at work.  Maybe later.  Anyway…fantastic actress and not hard to look at either.  Another great series out of the UK.

Ad essere passata alla storia è infatti la sua cover firmata da Michael Andrews e cantata da Gary Jules che è diventata colonna sonora di importanti film e serial come Csi, E.R. – Medici in prima linea – Cold Case, Nip/Tuck, Smallville e anche per la pubblicità del videogioco Gears of War per XBox 360. SEEKING VICTIMS’ NEXT OF KIN

DESCRIPTION

As part of the Civil Rights-Era Cold Case Initiative, the FBI is currently re-assessing more than 100 unsolved or inadequately solved racially motivated homicides from the civil rights era. The FBI intends to notify the victims’ families of the results of the investigation. Unfortunately, however, due to the passage of time and the migration of many families, the FBI has been unable to identify the next of kin in 33 cases. The names and circumstances of these victims are listed below in hopes that the public may be able to provide information that can assist the FBI in locating surviving family members.

Atlanta Division:

A.C. Hall: A.C. Hall was shot and killed on October 11, 1962, in Macon, Georgia, after being identified by a Caucasian woman as the man who stole a pistol from her car. The woman observed a person breaking into her car and the police responded. The officers drove her and her husband through the neighborhood to find the perpetrator. The couple identified Hall as the person who may be responsible and after a foot chase he was shot and killed by the officers.

Arthur James Hill: Arthur James Hill was allegedly shot and killed on August 20, 1965, by an individual during an altercation with a group of Caucasian men in Villa Rica, Georgia. One of the men who shot Hill stated that Hill was pulling out a shotgun when Hill was shot.

Ernest Hunter: Ernest Hunter was arrested in Savannah, Georgia, on September 13, 1958. Later that day, he was shot and killed by a police officer following an alleged struggle inside the holding cell at the police station. Hunter was arrested after he interfered with the officer’s attempts to give Hunter’s wife a traffic citation.

Maybelle Mahone: On December 5, 1956, a Caucasian male shot and killed Maybelle Mahone in her home in Molena, Georgia.

Clarence Horatious Pickett: Clarence Horatious Pickett was beaten by a police officer on December 21, 1957, in Columbus, Georgia, while Pickett was in jail. Pickett died as a result of his injuries on December 23, 1957.

Birmingham Division:

Nathan Johnson: On May 8, 1966, two police officers in Alabaster, Alabama, stopped Nathan Johnson for driving under the influence of alcohol. Johnson was transported to the station where he allegedly struggled with one of the officers and was shot and killed.

William Lewis Moore: On April 23, 1963, William Moore was shot and killed by an individual near Attalla, Alabama. Moore, a postal worker from Baltimore, Maryland, and a former Marine had begun a solo march from Chattanooga, Tennessee, en route to Jackson, Mississippi, to deliver a letter to the governor urging the integration of the University of Mississippi.

Johnny Robinson: Johnny Robinson was a 16-year-old African-American who was shot and killed by a police officer in Birmingham, Alabama, on September 15, 1963, during the aftermath of the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing.

Columbia Division:

James Waymers: On July 10, 1965, James Waymers was killed in Allendale, South Carolina, after an argument with an individual regarding Waymers’ efforts to string electrical wires into the home of an African American.

Dallas Division:

John Earl Reese: On October 22, 1955, John Earl Reese, a 16-year-old African-American male was shot and killed along with two other African-American females by two men who fired several rounds into a predominantly African-American café in Gregg County, Texas.

Jacksonville Division:

Joseph Hill Dumas: On May 5, 1962, Joseph Dumas was killed in Perry, Florida, by a law enforcement officer who may have shot him accidentally during a traffic stop. Dumas and his family were detained during the stop in Taylor County, Florida.

Jackson Division:

Eli Brumfield: Eli Brumfield was stopped for speeding in McComb, Mississippi, on October 13, 1961. When Brumfield allegedly jumped from his car with knife, he was shot and killed by the police officer.

Silas Ernest Caston: Silas Ernest Caston was shot and killed by a law enforcement officer in Hinds County, Mississippi, on March 1, 1964.

Jimmie Lee Griffin: Jimmie Lee Griffin’s body was discovered on a local highway near Sturgis, Mississippi, on September 24, 1965.

Ernest Jells: Ernest Jells was shot to death on October 20, 1963, in Clarksdale, Mississippi, by a police officer after Jells allegedly pointed a rifle at officers who were attempting to arrest him for stealing a banana from a local grocery store.

William Henry Lee, aka, John Patrick Lee: Lee’s body was discovered near railroad tracks in Rankin County, Mississippi, on February 25, 1965. Lee may have walked away from his disabled vehicle to seek assistance.

George Love: George Love was shot and killed near Ruleville, Mississippi, on January 8, 1958, by police officers after Love allegedly shot and seriously wounded a Ruleville night marshal who sought to question Love about a robbery.

Neimiah Montgomery: Neimiah Montgomery stopped at a gas station on August 10, 1964, in Cleveland, Mississippi, and asked the attendant to put gas in his car. Montgomery allegedly refused to pay for the gas and attacked the attendant. A police officer shot and killed Montgomery when he arrived on the scene.

Jessie James Shelby: Jessie Shelby was shot and killed by a police officer in Yazoo City, Mississippi, on January 21, 1956.

Ollie Shelby: Ollie Shelby was shot and killed on January 22, 1965, while he was incarcerated in the Hinds County Jail in Mississippi.

Ed Smith: Ed Smith was allegedly shot and killed on April 27, 1958, in State Line, Mississippi.

Isaiah Taylor: Isaiah Taylor was shot and killed on June 26, 1964 in Ruleville, Mississippi, by a police officer following a traffic stop.

Mobile Division:

Hiliard Brooks: On August 13, 1952, Hiliard Brooks was shot and killed by a police officer over a dispute regarding whether or not Brooks paid his bus fare.

Rogers Hamilton: On October 22, 1957, one or two men came to Rogers Hamilton’s home in Lowndes County, Alabama, and took him out of his house. Hamilton got into the truck with the men. His mother found Hamilton’s body in the road. He had been shot and killed.

Bessie McDowell: Two men went to Bessie McDowell’s home in Andalusia, Alabama, in 1956 to collect a debt from an individual who resided with McDowell. When the individual fled, the men shot into the house and accidentally struck McDowell killing her.

James Earl Motley: On November 20, 1966, James Motley was detained by a police officer in Elmore County, Alabama, during a traffic stop. After an alleged altercation with responding officers, he was transported to the police station. He was later found dead in the holding cell.

Archie Wooden: Archie Wooden was sixteen years old when he allegedly cut his leg on the branch of a tree and bled to death in 1967 in Camden, Alabama.

New Orleans Division:

Izell Henry: Two individuals claimed that they found Izell Henry in a roadside ditch about a mile from his home in Greensburg, Louisiana, on July 28, 1954. They transported him to Lallie Kemp Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

David Pitts, Albert Pitts, Marshall Johns, Ernest McPharland: On July 23, 1960, an individual shot and killed four of his employees in Monroe, Louisiana.

New York Division:

Jimmy Powell: On July 16, 1964, Jimmy Powell was fifteen years old when he was shot and killed by a police officer in New York City for allegedly charging at the officer with a knife.

San Antonio Division:

Preston Bolden: On May 8, 1953, Preston Bolden was found dead in the vicinity of 419 Nolan, in the proximity of the 600 block of North Walnut Street in San Antonio, Texas, near a railroad track. Bolden’s neck was broken.

Ann Thomas: Ann Thomas’ partially-clothed body was found on April 8, 1969, near the intersection of Rotary Street and Hamil in San Antonio, Texas. She had been sexually assaulted and shot four times in the head.

Ladislado Ureste: Ladislado Ureste was found on April 22, 1953, by a police officer near Concepcion Park in San Antonio, Texas. He was taken to a local hospital where he died.

Cold Case has long had a reputation for it’s strong tie-ins with music, and although I’m a fan of the show, and also like how they often feature an artist’s songs repeatedly through an episode, I haven’t always been huge on the music they picked – for instance, last week we were treated to a bunch of Santana tunes. However, on the most recent episode, “Read Between the Lines,” we were treated to the music stylings of one MC Lyte, with her confident jam “Act Like You Know.” The song plays when Zeb takes Donalyn to meet with Andrews, and plays throughout her impromptu ‘audition.’  Click on the picture below to watch the scene in it’s entirety.

‘Three Rivers’ atingiu sua maior audiência! A CBS renovou cedo a série, e agora começa a colher os frutos. As chances de uma temporada completa são poucas, mas o episódio desta semana teve um crescimento de 11%, atraindo 8.5 milhões de telespectadores e fazendo 2.0 pontos na demo qualificada 18-49. O episódio teve participação do excelente e problemático ator, Mandy Patinkin.

‘Cold Case’ também foi bem e atingiu sua melhor audiência desde outubro: 9.2 milhões de telespectadores e 2.1 pontos na demo – um crescimento de 24% em relação ao episódio da semana passada, que por sua vez, foi o menos assistido da temporada até aqui. ‘Amazing Race’ abriu a noite da emissora com 11.6 milhões e 3.2 pontos, queda de 8%.

Quarta colocada na demo qualificada, a CBS não foi a única emissora a crescer ontem a noite: O Sunday Night Football na NBC ganhou a noite com ótimos números: 19.1 milhões e 7.5 pontos.

A ABC finalmente mandou muito bem em tudo: ‘Extreme Makeover’ (11.6 milhões e 3.6 pontos) subiu 20%, ‘Desperate Housewives’ (14.4 milhões e 4.9 pontos) subiu 11% para sua maior audiência em seis semanas, e ‘Brothers & Sisters’ (10.2 milhões e 3.2 pontos) que subiu 10% e atingiu sua melhor audiência em sete meses.

Já a Fox, segunda colocada na demo, não foi tão bem: dois de seus shows atingiram suas piores audiências na temporada: ‘The Cleveland Show’ (7 milhões e 3.3 pontos) e ‘American Dad’ (6 milhões e 2.9 pontos). Vale lembrar que ‘Cleveland’ vem sendo sacrificada pela emissora, sendo exibida em um horário diferente de onde estreou muito bem. A emissora também exibiu ‘Family Guy’ (8.3 milhões e 4.1 pontos) e ‘The Simpsons’ (9 milhões e 4.2 pontos).

It was one of the last days of Leigh’s summer break and mother and daughter had eaten breakfast together, reading the paper and talking about the coming school year.
Leigh planned to go to an open house at her new school that morning. She was waiting at home for her grandmother to pick her up. It was the first time she’d waited home alone.
As Vickie Felton left for work shortly before 8 a.m., bands of rain from Hurricane Andrew moved over Tupelo, and the Gulf Coast was under a hurricane alert. Worried, Felton called home. Nobody answered, so she hurried home after spending just a few minutes at the office.

Felton said that when she returned home, she found the garage door open, the light turned on. “That was very strange because the light doesn’t turn on unless someone triggers the door,” she said.

“I came in the house and there was blood on the side of the wall,” Felton said. “I started calling for Leigh and going through all the rooms,” she said. “Then I went into her bedroom.”
“Her favorite blanket was crumbled up on the floor and I was very scared,” she said. She ran into the backyard, checking the pool and the shed. There was no sign of Leigh.

VIRGINIA BEACH – Four years ago August 14, 18-year-old Mary Rachel “Shellie” Carson was found dead in some bushes not far from her home in Kings Grant. Her bicycle was nearby.

The case remains open as leads have gone cold.

While Va. Beach Police continue working on the case, Carson’s family remains hopeful her killer will be brought to justice.

She’s never far from their thoughts.

“I’m not sure you ever completely heal, but there’s a constant reminder almost every day, every hour of day, that something comes up that reminds you of your daughter’s death,” said her father, Bill Carson.

Mr. Carson believes the killer could still be in the community.

A private reward of up to $40,000 was being offered for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of Shellie’s killer. That’s on top of the up to $1000 offered by Crime Solvers.

An Incurable Grief
Alex Tillman’s murder hasn’t been solved. Neither have hundreds of other Miami killings.

Just after sunrise on a cloudy, autumn morning, a homeless man shuffles along the neglected Florida East Coast railway tracks that slice through Miami’s artsy, but still-blighted Wynwood neighborhood. A train hasn’t ridden the disused section of rail in years and the corridor is deserted, hemmed in on either side by bulky warehouses that block out the noise of the stirring city beyond. Tall, dry grass rustles like rice paper in the breeze and the man’s slow footsteps are the only other sound as he ambles along the wide, unkempt passageway.

Up ahead, just left of the rusted rails, something lying on the fringe of the overgrown foliage catches his eye. He moves closer, takes a few cautious steps toward the dark figure sprawled in the dirt, and makes a horrific discovery.

A young black man, badly burned, lies on the ground. His dark jeans and black tee shirt are torn. The left side of his face is so badly disfigured from the flames that engulfed him that even his loved ones probably wouldn’t recognize him.

The drifter alerts nearby warehouse workers, who stroll over to see the disturbing sight for themselves before calling 911. Police, crime scene investigators, homicide detectives, and a TV news crew materialize like characters in a TV crime drama. No wallet or cell phone is found on the victim and the medical examiners who turn up will have to use the small tattoo on the dead youth’s forearm to later identify him as eighteen-year-old high school senior Alex Tillman.

It’s Tuesday, November 4th, 2008. Presidential election-day. For the first time in 42 years, the City of Miami has just gone more than a month without a homicide. In less than 18 hours, throngs of triumphant men and women will spill out onto the nighttime streets of Wynwood, and nearby Overtown and Little Haiti, to publicly celebrate the news of Barack Obama’s electoral victory.

But even with the new president’s message of hope and change rattling the hearts of millions, one thing in Miami will remain relatively unchanged in 2008—the homicide clearance rate (the number of murders for which a suspect is arrested and charged).

Alex Tillman’s death will be one of 63 murders in the City of Miami in 2008 (the last year for which complete statistics are available), and will be one of 33 murders for which no one is arrested, placing the clearance rate at 48 percent—4 percent below the city’s ten-year average.

Over the last ten years, 334 murders in Miami, and 693 in all of Dade County, were either unsolved or uncleared by police. ‘Solving,’ in police parlance, means figuring out who committed a crime. ‘Clearing’ means having enough evidence to actually make an arrest.

On average, 16 out of every 100,000 Miami residents are murdered yearly, almost three times more than the national average. More than half of their killers get away with the crime.

Those unresolved homicides leave victims’ families drowning in fear, paranoia, nightmares, and depression. Parents dwell endlessly on their children’s final, terrible moments, tormented by their imaginations. Siblings peer nervously over their shoulders in public, expecting a faceless killer to appear at any moment. Relatives wonder, to the point of delirium, who is to blame and why their kin were taken. The victims await justice. The relatives bare psychological scars as deep as the wounds that killed their loved ones.

And the murderers walk among us.

Although a year has passed since her son’s death, Tawana Fairell still can’t sleep at night. She can’t concentrate, can’t shed her feelings of guilt, and trusts no one. She’s not the same person she used to be. She can’t even look at Alex’s picture anymore. She had to turn it around to face the wall. Not knowing why her child was killed is torture. Knowing that the killer, or killers, freely roam the same city streets where she and her family live, haunts her like nothing else.

Seated at a picnic table at Charles Hadley Park in Liberty City, the soft-spoken single mother of three boys speaks eloquently about her late son with a mixture of heartache and exhaustion: “Sometimes I think God sees how much I love my sons and is jealous and is looking for ways to get my attention away. Everyone tells me God doesn’t work like that, but I just can’t understand why my son isn’t here right now. I picture the worst. I imagine him screaming and calling out for me and I wasn’t there for him. I sleep with every light on in the house. I’m afraid he might come to me in the night with that burnt side of his face. I get headaches every night on my left side and my left eye gets blurry. I feel like I’m going crazy.”

Two days before Alex’s ruined body was discovered, Tawana got a call from him. It was a Sunday. They were supposed to meet at Dade Memorial Park cemetery in Opa-Locka to put flowers on her mother’s grave. Later, Alex wanted to go cast an early vote for Obama at Miami’s downtown Government Center. He called around 11 a.m. to say he was at a friend’s house and would be late.

“Forget it! Just forget it!” Tawana scolded him and hung up the phone, frustrated that Alex had broken his promise to be on time. That was the last time she spoke to her son. She tried to call him back later that day, but he didn’t pick up. “So I assume they already did to him whatever it is they were going to do,” she speculates, viewing that conversation now like a disastrous farewell.

At the time, local news media made a point to mention that Tillman had no criminal record, no gang affiliations, and wasn’t into drugs—all apparently necessary declarations to make when you consider that most murders in Overtown, where Tillman lived, are drug or gang-related, according to police. Only Miami’s nearby Little Haiti neighborhood produced more slaughtered humans in 2008.

But Tillman didn’t fit a violent profile and his killing, friends and family suspect, was likely motivated by something else altogether—jealousy. “He was a pretty boy,” his mother says. “The girls loved him and he loved them. Girls were his only vice. He especially liked Hispanic girls.” She sometimes wonders whether a spurned female admirer, of which there were many, had someone take revenge on him. Or, perhaps an enraged boyfriend caught Tillman with his girlfriend. “Maybe a girl’s father caught them together and did something to him out of prejudice. I don’t know,” she sighs. “I’m thinking all kinds of things.”

“He was definitely a lady’s man,” says Isaiah Bennet, Alex’s closest friend and fellow senior at Booker T. Washington high school. “He had mood swings sometimes, but he didn’t argue or fight. That wasn’t his style. Both me and Alex preferred Hispanic girls. They treat you better. Black girls would hate on us sometimes and ask why we like Spanish girls, but I don’t know anything about someone being jealous or upset with him.”

“By all accounts, he had no enemies. This surprised many people,” Miami Police Sergeant Armando Aguilar, Jr. told CBS4 this past July.

Yet, the viciousness of the crime suggests otherwise. The fire that charred Alex’s body, police say, was likely a sloppy attempt to conceal his identity, and is not what killed him. Sgt. Aguilar asked that the cause of death not be revealed, saying it would create “very serious problems for the investigation.”

Veteran Miami homicide detective Captain Nelson Andreu, who currently works at the West Miami Police Dept., explained that detectives withhold the cause of death in a murder case so they can test a future suspect’s knowledge of a killing and determine the extent of their involvement. It also helps them to eliminate bogus tips.

Suffice it to say, then, that Alex suffered a punishing end, inflicted by someone, or several people, with fury in their heart.

“I believe someone hated him,” his mother concedes. “I just don’t know why.”

The second of four boys, Alex Tillman grew up in two of Miami’s most notoriously dangerous neighborhoods, Overtown and the Brownsville subdivision of Liberty City (a.k.a. Brown-Sub). With a mostly absent father, and living as a constant witness to poverty, despair, and the sometimes violent reality of the streets that surrounded him, Alex stepped into manhood sooner than is usually scripted, becoming a father to his two younger brothers and a best friend to his mother, Tawana.

He’d help get his brothers dressed in the morning and drive them to school. His mother hated driving, so if she needed to go somewhere, he’d drive her, too. He told her he wanted to be a pediatrician and, the week before he died, Tawana took him down to Miami-Dade College’s medical campus to register him for night classes.

At Booker T. Washington high school, where he spent his junior and senior year, he joined 5,000 Role Models, a mentoring program for young minority boys at risk of dropping out of school. He figured it would look good on a resume later on.

For a while, he worked as a dishwasher at Casablanca Seafood Bar & Grill, not far from his Overtown apartment, and later at Taco Bell on Biscayne Boulevard and 36th street. If he had time, he’d tag along with his grandfather to weddings and funerals to assist him with his event photography business.

“He was very respectful, very well-groomed, would never be caught with his jeans hanging off his butt,” Tawana insists. “I had people tell me, ‘Your kids are Oreos. You’re trying to make them white,’ because Alex sometimes corrected people’s speech if they used too much slang or really bad English.”

She says the relationship she had with her son was wonderful. They’d go to the gym together. They even double-date sometimes. As a surgical assistant, she’d often have to work late, but she never worried about what was going on at home. And if Alex was the one to come home late, she’d call him on the phone and they’d talk until he reached the front door. If he found a new friend and started spending time with them, she’d get jealous.

“He didn’t want his friends to know, but he loved movies about couples breaking up and getting back together,” Tawana reminisces. “There were times he would come into my room, lay his head on my lap and talk to me about girls.”

“There were things he didn’t tell me, though,” she admits.

There were things, it seems, Alex didn’t tell anyone. Or, at least, things none of his friends wish to reveal now. Out of six acquaintances contacted for this story, only two returned calls and emails seeking comment. And, whether it’s a reluctance to snitch, a fear of reprisal, or an indication of something more sinister, only a very vague picture of Alex’s final days has emerged.

On Sunday, October 2nd, 2008, two days before his body was found, Alex called his best friend Isaiah, “Zayy,” around 1:30 a.m., after finishing the late shift at Taco Bell. He told him he had met a girl. She had come into the restaurant earlier that night. He was heading home and planned to meet up with her later.

“He liked to brag,” Zayy chuckled during a recent phone interview. “I was asleep on the couch when he called. He told me her name, but I was so sleepy I couldn’t remember it the next day.”

No one can confirm whether or not Alex actually met up with the mystery girl, but less than eight hours later, at 9:11 a.m., security cameras at his Overtown apartment building captured him strutting out the front door, draped in his dark designer jeans and black tee shirt, his red cap tilted fashionably to one side. He was supposed to be heading to Opa-Locka to meet his mother at his grandmother’s gravesite. But he made a detour, and when Tawana called around two hours later to find out where he was, he said he was “at a friend’s house.”

Which friend he was visiting remains unknown. “It couldn’t have been a guy’s house,” Zayy insists. “I would’ve known about it because we had the same friends.”

Alex’s steady girlfriend of a year and a half, Kayla, texted and called him several times later that day, but he didn’t answer his phone or return his messages.

When Alex didn’t come home that night, Tawana began to worry. But Alex was eighteen, a legal adult, and she figured he had stayed at a relative’s or friend’s house. She tried to call him, but his phone kept going straight to voicemail and she assumed his cell battery had died or he’d forgotten to pay his bill.

When he didn’t turn up at home or at school the next morning, though, she got scared.

And then, the call came that would send her racing through the streets of Miami in a panic.

A young lady called the Taco Bell where Alex worked. She was crying and said that Alex had been killed and badly burned. She called more than once, gave a false name, and spoke to more than one person, telling the same story each time. Store employees asked why she didn’t call the police. She said her parents would kill her if she did.

“When I heard about that call,” Tawana says, “I left my job and went straight to the police station. I didn’t even wait for my ride. I just started running.”

Police issued a county-wide BOLO (Be on the Lookout) via police radio and distributed a missing persons flyer.

Tawana went home and prayed, hoping that Alex would come strutting through the door at any minute. But another 24 hours would creep by with no news.

Police called the next day, around 2:30 p.m., and asked her to come back to the station to look at Alex’s phone records to see if she could identify any of the numbers. Once she was there, they revealed the real reason for calling her in.

They had found Alex.

“I lost it,” Tawana says. “I never felt anything like that in my life.” She begged to see her son, but the medical examiners wouldn’t allow it. They told her they don’t let family members view or identify bodies anymore. Eventually, homicide detectives on the case admitted they instructed them not to let her see Alex. “I’m glad they did that,” she says, “because I probably would’ve thrown up right there in the office or pulled all of my hair out.”

Everyone in Alex’s circle immediately fell under police suspicion and countless rumors about who was to blame quickly began to circulate. Some said a girl who was obsessed with Alex had somebody kill him because he rejected her. Others blamed a gang. One friend told a bizarre tale about a violent drag queen, later killed in a gunfight with police, who would admire Alex through Taco Bell’s windows while he was working. That story, however, could not be verified.

“There was a girl calling Alex’s cell phone in the weeks before his murder,” Tawana says. “She’d call and say, ‘I’m watching you. I know what you got on. And he’d be looking around like ‘Who is this? How do you know where I am?’”

Tawana thinks about that, and a hundred other details of Alex’s last weeks alive, struggling to remember things and trying to come up with information that might lead to Alex’s killer.

Alex’s paternal grandfather, Ernest Tillman, still can’t make sense of the killing. “His only downfall was the girls,” he insists. “He wasn’t violent or into drugs. That’s the only thing it could be. The girls.”

Standing on a dismal corner in Overtown, the midday sun in his eyes, dried blood and bullet casings at his feet, Miami Homicide Detective Orlando Benitez looks into a television camera and laments the main hurdle he’ll face in trying to solve the most recent shooting death to which he’s just been called: “The Overtown area doesn’t like to talk too much.”

Det. Benitez, who leads the Alex Tillman investigation, is one of several Miami detective stars on A&E’s reality television series, The First 48, which takes viewers behind the scenes on homicide investigations in big cities across America. The show’s title voiceover explains the premise this way: “For homicide detectives, the clock starts ticking the moment they are called. Their chance of solving a case is cut in half if they don’t get a lead within the first 48 hours.”

The First 48’s film crew trailed Benitez in the days following Alex’s murder, and even attended his crowded Overtown funeral at Trinity CME Church a week later. A&E won’t say if they plan to use the footage for a future episode. Likewise, Det. Benitez did not respond to repeated requests for comment on the case.

Captain Nelson Andreu, however, reiterated Det. Benitez’s on-camera gripe. During a recent interview, he cited lack of witness cooperation as the number one hurdle to solving homicides: “People are afraid of retaliation. They don’t want to get involved.”

The culture of ‘No Snitching,’ which differs from a fear-based reluctance to speak out, is also a major factor, especially in the small Overtown community where many people know each other.

Nationally, more people get away with murder now than in decades past. This despite advances in DNA technology and other crime-fighting tools. Last year, the Associated Press reported that the national homicide clearance rate dropped from 91 percent in 1963 to 61 percent in 2007.

In the City of Miami, where the number of murders has nose-dived from 177 in 1984 to 63 in 2008, the clearance rate has plummeted from 75 percent to 48 percent. In fact, in only four out of the last ten years has the rate risen above 50 percent.

According to Miami Herald archives, Dade County had 533 murders and a 55 percent clearance rate in 1982. Despite 305 fewer murders in 2008, the clearance rate was only 4 percent higher.

Those figures defy the logical expectation that fewer murders should mean higher clearance rates. Experts blame today’s larger urban populations, understaffed police departments, a flood of illegal guns, and drug, robbery, and gang-related crimes between strangers (which are harder to solve than “acquaintance homicides”) for the discrepancy.

Regarding Miami’s currently low rate, Captain Andreu says the problem often boils down to excessive workloads. “[That’s why] the first 48 hours are so important, because you want to solve a case before the next homicide comes in. At that point, you’ve got to put one down to pick up the next. So, sometimes cases get put on the back-burner through no fault of the detective. The problem is the sheer volume of cases.”

Crime stats and police occupational stressors, however, are mute to describe the long trail of living victims created by each slaying.

According to POMC (Parents of Murdered Children), a national organization with over 100,000 members, seven to ten people are stricken by grief after each murder, which means the ranks of Miami’s bereaved swells by triple digits each year.

POMC’s Miami-Dade chapter congregates twice a month, at the Hollywood and Miami Gardens police stations. Parents, spouses, siblings, children, and close friends of Miami’s slain gather to contend with their pain. Their family tragedies consist of deadly beatings, stabbings, shootings, violent rapes, and other lethal forms of cruelty. Some of their loved ones died recently, others were butchered decades ago.

Local chapter leader Barbara Koeppel, whose son was beaten to death with a brick, says, “Sometimes we won’t see people at our meetings for six months and then something will trigger them to come back again.”

Not all of the killings have been solved. “And some people have made peace with that,” Koeppel says. “They’ve come to realize that even after an arrest, trial, and sentencing, there will always be an empty place at the Thanksgiving and Christmas table.”

Tawana Fairell, however, isn’t ready to make peace with her son’s killing just yet.

Her incurable grief over Alex’s death is only the latest, and worst, in a string of heartaches. She lost her mother to cardiovascular disease a month before Alex. Her sister was shot in the head by a boyfriend eight years ago. Her father, upon learning that a man had raped a female family member, chased him down the street and tried to shoot him. He missed and did more jail time than the rapist for attempted murder. He died not long after being released from prison.

After Alex’s murder, police told Tawana not to go back to her Overtown apartment for the safety of her and her sons—in case the killer decided to target them, too. She moved around from friend to relative to coworker. When she finally did return to her apartment a few months later, she discovered that building management had removed and disposed of all her belongings for non-payment of rent.

“I was seeing a psychiatrist,” she explains. “I wasn’t in my right mind. I wasn’t even able to remember that I had a place where I needed to pay rent. My friends from work were taking care of me in shifts. It took me about three months just to start eating properly again. I had suicidal thoughts, because I wanted to be with Alex. The only thing that kept me here were my other sons.”

She has since found a new apartment, far from Overtown, and even managed to complete her education, earning a bachelor’s degree this past September in Healthcare Administration. But rebounding and relocating has taken a financial toll and she still has no furniture and shares an inflatable bed with her eleven-year-old son, whom she refuses to let out of her sight.

Every evening after work, she sits at the Liberty City park where he has football practice and waits for him to finish. His friends make fun of him, calling him a mama’s boy, because Tawana’s always at his side. And if he doesn’t have school, she takes him to work with her. “You have no idea how in love I am with my sons,” she gushes.

Yet, her chronic paranoia is stifling. “I can’t even take my boys to the movies at night because I’m scared someone is following me. That’s how petrified I am until these people are caught.”

She’s taking Lexapro for anxiety and depression. And another medication, too, but she can’t remember the name. And something to help her sleep. “It’s hurting me so much inside that my son is gone,” she says. “I think about it all the time.”

“I told the cops, if you don’t have leads, just tell me. But please don’t keep me in the dark. I call and leave them information that I come up with about the case, but I always get voicemail. I know I’m not the only case they’re working on, but I just want them to call me and tell me something, anything. I want to do everything I can to find whoever did this. I want to sit across from them and ask them ‘Why? What could he have done to you?’”

  Il progetto, ancora senza titolo, vedrà un gruppo di ragazzi di provincia appassionati di fantascienza che tentano di girare una propria versione di un famoso telefilm cancellato. In aggiunta, Charles sta lavorando anche a un progetto per FOX su una sitcom sci-fi dal titolo Boldly Going Nowhere.
• Nuova campagna pubblicitaria virale per “Fringe”
  L’episodio in onda di Fringe questa settimana sarà completamente centrato su l’Osservatore (Michael Cerveris), il misterioso personaggio calvo che è sempre testimone degli eventi chiave della serie e scopriremo quindi qualcosa in più su di lui.
  Per l’occasione la Fox lancerà una nuova campagna virale chiamata “Observer Week” che vedrà diversi attori vestiti come il personaggio (abito nero, testa rasata e valigetta in mano) apparire tra il pubblico di programmi Fox come la partita di domenica della NFL o del reality So You Think You Can Dance. Qualcosa del genere venne fatta anche l’anno scorso in programmi come American Idol e le gare NASCAR ma quest’anno la FOX andrà oltre. Gruppi di Osservatori infatti andranno in giro per diverse città (Los Angeles, Atlanta, New York, Boston e Chicago) e distribuiranno confezioni di salsa piccante in riferimento al fatto che il personaggio ne ingerisce enormi quantità ogni volta che appare nella serie.
• Kevin Murphy prende in mano le redini di “Caprica”
  Kevin Murphy (Mystery Science Theater 3000) è il nuovo showrunner di Caprica, la serie di fantascienza che racconterà le vicende avvenute prima di Battlestar Galactica. Inizialmente si era unito alla crew in veste di co-produttore esecutivo insieme a Ron Moore, David Eick e Jane Espenson. Murphy sta inoltre sviluppando un serial drama per la CW basato sul libro “Cheer! – Inside the Secret World of College Cheerleaders” che esplora il mondo e la vita delle cheerleaders. Caprica debutterà su SyFy nel Gennaio 2010 in USA ma l’episodio pilota è già disponibile in dvd.
• Trailer della sesta stagione di Dr. House
  Un paio di settimane fa abbiamo assistito anche noi qui in Italia al colpo di scena finale della quinta stagione di Dr. House che ha visto il protagonista rinchiuso in manicomio. La sesta in USA è partita ormai da due mesi, sta mietendo successo di pubblico e critica ed ha visto ritornare l’attenzione sul cast storico della serie. Di seguito vi propongo il trailer del primo doppio bellissimo episodio che ha inaugurato questa nuova stagione.

Sunday TV Nights are usually a disappointing way to end a weekend and start a week….networks need to spread the goods a little better throughout the week…never-the-less…this Sunday night’s docket was actually fairly entertaining with the likes of Battle of the Blades, Amazing Race and Cold Case taking over the screen. You can read my discussion and recount of the Amazing Race in my previous posting…but here is a wrap up of the other players tonight:

Battle of the Blades- It was the finale and the three remaining contestants took to the ice for the final time in competition.

Highlights:

• Douggy Gilmore as the sit-in third judge- He is Toronto royalty and he looked as dapper as a Hockey Prince should! Don Cherry would either be proud or jealous.
• Typical Canadian niceties exchanged in the Perfect 6’s across the board for each performance…no stand taken by the judges (disappointing but not surprising)
• 3 pretty impressive routines…it almost shows off the talent of the female skaters/choreographers more than the hockey (lugs) players. But I actually have seen serious improvement in the fluidity of each contestant…maybe it’s just the switch from the usual spandex into more casual jeans for tonights performances.

Prediction: Hard to call, but I’m going to try and take a stance (take note judges…) and go out on a limb.
I predict a Craig Simpson win (Jamie Sale is a Canadian darling, and Craig Simpson has charisma).

Results show airs tomorrow on CBC at 8pm.

Cold Case- Often lost in the sea of great Police procedural dramas, but this show has a nifty twist. Cold Case weaves its story back and forth through spaces in time (often multi- decades) to piece together stories that were long ‘cold’ or un-solved. The production value of this show is actually what makes it such an enjoyable hour to watch. No disappointment tonight. They drop red-herring after red-herring until the culprit you least expect gets whisked away as the ghosts of the ‘wronged’ linger and get their redemption. A very good sunday night show indeed…I just wonder if many people know to tune in…Sunday nights CBS 10pm –Try it next week.
