As a brand new police officer, Theodore Tate’s first case involved the murder of a little girl in an abandoned slaughterhouse. The killer was caught, then himself murdered by the child’s father, who was jailed for fifteen years. In this time Theo has been a PI, again a cop, and again a PI, just barely paying his wife’s medical bills. Then, on a cold March day, the news comes in of a particularly gruesome murder, then, frighteningly of yet another.

Meanwhile, the whole Christchurch police department, including Tate and his former partner and friend, Carl Schroder, attend the funeral of a fellow officer, which ends up with a whole lot of booze floating around. Tate is a recovering alcoholic and the only sober one capable of taking on the investigation when the detectives are called out. It isn’t long before connections are made linking these murders with what happened fifteen years before, and so the manhunt is on. The stakes raise when a doctor also connected to that old case is kidnapped, along with his three young daughters.

I’ll admit it took me days to get into this story. I don’t like books about wanton killers. The book’s tone is mostly dismal and dark. Most of all, I really dislike books written in present tense, which this one is, and I don’t like to go into the killer’s point-of-view. When I began the book, I would read one to three pages at a sitting before going on to something else. But then a funny thing happened. I found a few more pages slipping past, then a chapter or maybe two. By the finale, I couldn’t wait to see how the story played out.

Mr. Cleave is a wonderful writer—although I’d still rather skip the present tense, which even at the end I found intrusive. Your mileage may vary. The plotting is terrific. Motivation behind the acts of violence is chilling, yet at the same time fascinating. Most of all, as with all extraordinary books, the characters are compelling. Even the children, one a baby, will grab you and not let go. Still, while Theodore Tate is an excellent protagonist, I believe the killer stole the show.

Lynn Kimbrough with the Denver District Attorney’s Office said Domonique Huntington, 26, was convicted of sexual assault.

The arrest and conviction is the result of work by Denver’s Cold Case Project.

“The assault occurred in February 2008 when the two men offered a ride to the victim, a 26-year-old woman, but instead of taking her home they drove to an isolated area where they both sexually assaulted her,” Kimbrough said in a statement.

DNA evidence collected at the time of the assault led to the identification of Huntington and Liphford as suspects.

Huntington will be sentenced in June.

A variety of new pieces of information including new voice recordings.

Bit late if you ask me… If it is indeed the voice of the East Area Rapist/Original Night Stalker, do you honestly think it would have been better to release all the voice recordings as soon as you had them so someone might have actually recognized him? What are the odds someone will remember the voice of someone they know back in the 70′s and 80′s?

Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Haviland said Michael Hoy made the admission Tuesday in Flint federal court during his sentencing for an unrelated gun crime.

Haviland said Hoy admitted to helping a friend move the body of Katie Cook, saying he helped out because he was afraid the killer would turn on him.

Mount Morris Township police Chief Scott McKenna, who heads the investigation, said he’s a “little floored” by Hoy’s disclosure.

Cook was 23 when she was last seen in August 2005. She disappeared soon after moving into her boyfriend’s home on Haven Street near Saginaw Street, police said.

In the years after her disappearance, investigators continued to follow leads, but still couldn’t find Cook. A break in the case came in 2012, following the arrest of Hoy’s ex-con brother, Gerald Hoy, on drug and gun charges.

According to court records, Gerald Hoy told ATF agents that he obtained five fully automatic firearms from his brother, Michael Hoy. He also told agents that his brother admitted to him that he helped bury Cook’s body.

Gerald Hoy’s tip sent police to Bloss Farm, on Reid Road near Morris Road in Gaines Township, where they spent 15 days combing through countless acres of land, searching for any sign of Cook. On Aug. 7, nearly seven years after she went missing, police found Cook’s body, which was positively identified through dental records.

Investigators then began focusing on Michael Hoy, who reportedly signed a written agreement with prosecutors, promising to help convict the man who killed Cook.

Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said the man Michael Hoy named as Cook’s killer has not been charged in her death, and is in custody on an unrelated assault with intent to murder charge in southern Missouri.

Michael Hoy was sentenced Tuesday to one year in federal prison after pleading guilty to one count of illegally possessing an unregistered machine gun. Gerald Hoy is still awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty to being a felon in possession of firearms.

Michael Hoy has not been charged in Cook’s death.

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – A cold case murder has been cracked more than 20 years after a man was found stabbed to death in Land Park.

Investigators say blood left behind helped crack the case, and linked the suspect to the crime.

Manuel Morales was last seen dropping off friends from a fashion show.

“I could not figure out what happened; I never could,” said Coco, Morales’ best friend.

The unsolved murder of Morales tormented Coco for nearly 25 years. She’s painstakingly gone over every detail, every last memory, haunted by Morales’ strange mood the last night she saw him alive on October 18, 1988.

“Finally, I said, ‘Manny are you OK?’ And he kinda took him a minute and he said ‘no, I’m not,’ ” said Coco.

She never got the chance to ask why. The next morning, homicide detectives discovered Morales’ body wrapped in a sheet in a Land Park gutter. Morales had been stabbed multiple times.

Decades passed without a single arrest being made.

“I’ve gone over it and over it in my head,” said Coco.

Now, Sacramento police say they finally have their suspect: Stanley Grow.

Police say they matched his DNA with that found at the murder scene.

Grow was arrested as he was leaving his North Highlands apartment. The elderly manager at the apartment says he’s like a son to her. And Grow’s upstairs neighbor was shocked at the murderous secret Grow allegedly hid for a quarter century.

“Nothing like that made me think he could commit something like that. He was a cool cat,” neighbor Troy Blast said.

Coco didn’t recognize Grow from his mug shot — a stranger to her, who police say took someone she loved dearly.

“I don’t really have words other than if that’s who did it, I hope justice is done because, Manny deserves it,” said Coco.

According to court records, Grow has an extensive criminal history, including robbery and drug charges.

Police say they still have not yet established a motive.

Investigators have had an age progression sketch done of a person of interest in the murder of elderly Aventura man Irving “Al” Sicherer.

When his daughter Bev looked at the drawing, she couldn’t help but wonder if the man in the drawing had something to do with her father’s murder.

“He looks mean.  He’s ugly,” said Bev Sicherer.  “It’s weird, it’s like you can see the meanness in his soul, just by the picture.”

“This is what we believe the person of interest might look like after 12 years,” said Aventura Police Detective Olga Burns.

The age progression sketch done based on surveillance video that shows Al and young man at an Aventura Publix in July of 2001.  Police believe Sicherer may have picked him up at the beach or a gay bar.

Later the two were seen on surveillance video at Sicherer’s condo building.  The guy vanished and Bev found her dad viciously beaten and stabbed in his apartment.

“There was blood from one end of the apartment to the other, spattered all over,” said Bev.  “I leaned down and I do remember his eyes were open and I said, ‘you know, daddy, I’m so sorry.’”

The killer left behind some vital clues, fingerprints and DNA.  Aventura police waited for years for a DNA hit and they thought they had a partial match from a Michigan prison inmate.

That turned into a dead end, so they’re back to the video of the kid who walked hunched over a bit, with the tattoo or birthmark near his right elbow and this new age progression sketch.

“Maybe he was visiting somebody here during the time 12 years ago,” said Det. Burns.  “Maybe somebody recognizes him.

It’s a long shot, one Bev hopes will pay off.

“My heart will never give up my brain sort of gave up,” she said.   “It’s more realistic.  Twelve years, I don’t know.  But in your heart you never give up.  You always want to see justice.”

California authorities and agencies in Florida, Kentucky, Missouri, Louisiana, Texas, Georgia, Ohio and Mississippi are reviewing cold case files after DNA evidence connected Little with the deaths of three women in Los Angeles.

Despite having a 100-page rap sheet with criminal charges in 24 states over 56 years, Little has served less than 10 years in prison on assault, burglary, armed robbery, shoplifting and drug violations.

Little – a former boxer – would allegedly deliver a knock-out punch to his victims and then strangle them, according to LAPD Detective Mitzi Roberts.

“Once we knew what we were dealing with, which was a violent offender, a serial killer, then it became very important for us to get this guy in custody,” Roberts said.

One of his alleged victims, Carol Alford was found murdered in a South L.A. alley on July 13, 1987.

“I still miss my mom like yesterday,” said daughter Brenda Gordon. “I remember everything that happened.”

Alford along with two more victims – Audrey Nelson, 35, found on Aug. 14, 1989; and Guadalupe Apodaca, 46, found on Sept. 3, 1989 – were all found manually strangled, according to investigators.

Little is due in court later this month for a hearing linked to the three charges, but no trial date has been set. If convicted, Little would face a minimum sentence of life in prison without parole.

In 1983, Samuel Williams was found shot near railroad tracks in the 4000-block of Wabash Avenue.

His injuries were fatal.

Detectives never found a suspect in the shooting.

The announcement came just hours after a man confessed to a 1990 murder in New Jersey that had also remained unsolved.

On Wednesday, Oct. 2, 1996 around 2:45 a.m., police responded to the 1700 block of Hope Street, where they found the body of Anjeanette Maldonado.

During the investigation, Philadelphia police were able to match DNA obtained during the murder investigation to that of the DNA profile of a convicted felon from Florida.

On Monday, April 1, 2013, 46-year-old Rafael Crespo was officially charged with Rape, Murder, Sexual Assault and related offenses for the murder of Maldonado.

Crespo is currently in jail in Bowling Green, Florida.

Dear friends, family and followers: here is how I spent my Spring Break. I’ve been hold up in a McHenry County courtroom. But I believe in all things there is a lesson to be learned.

My take away? Always tell the truth, know who your friends are and who your friends’ friends are and who your kids’ friends are. Be mindful of your words and actions. Humans are complicated.

Soon I’ll update this blog post with an end of the day recap from today/Monday in court. Remember there has never been a body found. This is the tragedy in this twisted, lie-ridden tale of sin and redemption. Tomorrow each lawyer will give their final closing arguments to jurors. Then the jurors will deliberate. Mario Casciaro’s fate will finally be determined – after more than 10 years since Brian’s disappearance, one perjury trial that ended in an acquittal, one murder trial that ended in a mistrial.  Mario, 29, faces 20 to 60 years in prison.

The Carricks will never know what really happened to Brian. One of 14 children in this large, Irish Catholic family. Very sweet, kind people. They will forever have a hole in their hearts, an empty chair at their Christmas table. They will also always have an empty chair where mom, Terry, would sit. Brian’s mom died months before seeing an arrest in her son’s murder.
