Ten years after a deadly warehouse blaze in Worcester, researchers at a nearby college say they’re closer to developing a sophisticated system for locating firefighters who become lost or trapped in a burning building.

The effort at Worcester Polytechnic Institute began within weeks of the Dec. 3, 1999 fire at the abandoned Worcester Cold Storage facility that took the lives of six Worcester firefighters.

WPI scientists have been working on a system that can transmit precise information on the whereabouts of firefighters to commanders outside of a building.

Professor David Cyganski says the team is trying to overcome limitations of existing infrared and GPS technology.

The school is set to announce a $1 million grant for the project this week from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

September 29, 2009 Lady Justice To: Members of Congress My faith in my industry leaders and co-op

September 29, 2009

Lady Justice

To: Members of Congress

My faith in my industry leaders and co-ops is greatly shaken. This is why I muster enough confidence to write to you on my behalf and for the behalf of the hard working dairy farmers in our nation that have had to endure these difficult times and lay mercifully at the hands of those who are to be representing us and looking out for “best interests”.

I am a third generation dairy farmer married to a third generation dairy farmer. We have experienced highs and lows in the past but now the highs are very short lived and the lows carry on for months and months. Dairy farmers have been in the worst economic situation since the Great Depression. Yet, I sit here today and we are short milk nationwide with the price that we receive still below the cost of production.

Did our leaders not see this coming? We have just completed retiring many healthy cows because there was too much milk, yet we are now bringing milk from Kansas and Oklahoma to California. That doesn’t make any sense!

We do know that Kraft and Dean Foods both recorded record profits. We also know that retail prices for Cheddar was up 4%, Ice Cream up 5%, American Processed Cheese down 1%, Butter down 14%, Fluid whole milk down 20% (Q-2 2009 vs Q-2 2008). Yet the U.S All-Milk price to farmers down 47%.

Another injustice is the use of MPC’s in our domestic market. MPC imports are up and our milk price is down! It would make sense that we would restrict MPC’s from being used in our domestic supply. These MPC’s have a direct impact on our price at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange which is a thinly traded market. It would make sense to produce these MPC’s here in the United States.

We have been blessed to have $350 million allocated to help the dairy farmers. I urge you to use some of those funds to put dairy farmers on a level playing field with “Big Food”, co-ops, and processors.

Our milk price has not increase to date due to the “ample” inventory supplies. Dairy futures are driven by the NASS surveys. Only about 800 are required to report. With this reporting there is a two week lag time.

More disturbing to me is that there is NO AUDITING FUNCTION what so ever. Even a slight miscalculation of reporting is an indirect factor on our milk price. I would like to see some of the money allotted to help dairy farmers to go toward the implementation a mandatory auditing function and quite possibly to daily reporting which would add to much needed transparency and improvement of our price discovery. The Beef/Pork producers have daily reporting with an auditing function that has worked very favorable for their industry.

As in all business, a balanced supply for demand is needed. We already have a faulty price discovery system with inventory reporting that has no accountability. With those factors in place it takes away our ability for necessary triggers that we need to balance our supply with demand. Dairy farmers are in a different situation than most, as we can not just “shut down” and not produce milk at the drop of a hat, as the health and well being of our cows are at stake. I think that many have benefited from this lag and lack of supply triggers.

I am also asking of you all, to help implement a National Supply Management Program. This will enable us to stay in alignment with demand. Highs and lows are inevitable at times but this will be manageable and keep us from devastation. It would put us on a level field. It would put us in a situation of control in our industry and relieve dependence of government assistance and alleviate the need to retire perfectly good and healthy animals to balance supply with demand.

I am asking you to please consider these solutions. Allow us to help ourselves by improving and changing the systems that are now in place. As most can agree, what we have now is failing miserably. It is time for change in our industry!

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

I believe there is a serial killer in Canada based on the simularities of several girls that are missing in Canada and the United States.

Each has brown hair, brown eyes or hazel eyes, they are either 5ft 2 or 1 or 5ft 10 or 11?

This is a gut feeling that I’m having about these cases that if all are found deceased they will be tied in together.

I would suggest that the police and detectives take a look at several missing person cases with similar heights, and looks and compare the clues to each case, see what is similar.

In each case “DRAGON” is similar, this is either a boat race, a tattoo or a place of business.

I have added Mariam Makniashvili’s photos and video info onto the Jessica Neilson A Pyschic Investigation site. Because it struck me as odd that the girls all look similar in nose, eyebrow and hair.

Harold’s vision on September 20th, 2009 @ 830 am was of a greenish color van, plymouth voyageur driven by 2 hispanic men, georgia plates, Black and white plates (GY 684), girl tied up in back – alive – back seat – tinted windows. Shes wearing Jeans, Jean Jacket, Shoes (Black, casual big heels on back, dress club shoes (he described them in his vision) A shiny material on the shoes. She had blondish hair, the men are talking about doing something to her, she is okay but scared. They tried to go to a bridge (border) turned around. They were driving towards Montreal then turned and driving in the direction of British Columbia. Trans Canada Hwy near a field, bush, straight ever greens, truckers going by.

(I urge you to ask WHY? (antitrust.atr@usdoj.gov)

Ms Varney. Thank you so very much for your support. I am a third generation California dairy farmer married for 26 years to a third generation dairyfarmer NEVER have we seen business as bad as it is now and our loss has been great. I am not one that want subsidies or price support. I am grateful for those tools because without them things would be worse. I want to make a fair wage for our work. As you know, Our price is based on the CME which is very thinly traded with lack of transparency. I believe with all of my heart that their is NO way we can compete with the forces behind our price discovery system. I have been shut down by many but continue to push on. As my mother would say “something is stinkin’ in the wood pile”!

In California and other parts of the nation we are becoming short on milk. Many co-ops have requested dairy farmers to produce more milk with no assurance of our price going up (as of now, it takes about $17 per hundred weight of milk produce and we are receiving almost $11.00 average). The reason the milk price has not gone up more quickly (we were as low as $9.00 per hundred weight) is due to inventory reported in cold storage (cheese and butter).

As 30 day cold storage for cheese and butter they are required to report to NASS their inventories (There is approximately 800 facilities required to report). Their reports are available online. I had wanted to receive a copy of their audits of the inventories. I was told that there is NO AUDITING FUNCTION…none…none whatsoever!

I was shock and questioned why, if EVERY American reporting for taxes is accountable to report accurately because of the fear of an audit. Dairy farmers as most business are accountable to their banks by audits! Why would these companies be graced with the “honor system”.

I asked them at NASS and also AMS if ANY inaccuracy of inventory reporting could have an indirect factor on our milk price? The answer from both agencies was an astounding YES! I was told that it would take an “Act of Legislation” to get an auditing function in place.

I just can not figure out why? By not being subjected to a formal auditing function they are not required to the same accountability that every other American is bound too!

I want an auditing function in place for those cold storage reporters of inventories of cheese and butter. It is what is fair to dairy farmers and to consumers as the end price paid by them.

You can look further into my request and more about me by looking at my blog www.dairygoddess.wordpress.com Something just doesn’t seem right especially with the record profits of Dean Foods and Kraft as dairy farmers have been in great despair and the price to consumers has never been greatly reduced.

Sincerely!

By LAUREN ETTER ST. ALBANS, Vt. — The Justice Department’s top antitrust enforcer told

By LAUREN ETTER

ST. ALBANS, Vt. — The Justice Department’s top antitrust enforcer told a packed hall of dairy farmers here Saturday that increased concentration in the dairy industry merited a closer look by the department.

“Parts of the dairy industry have experienced extensive consolidation in recent years,” said Assistant Attorney General Christine Varney. As a result, “the potential for an exercise of buyer power has increased.”

Ms. Varney, who heads the Justice Department’s antitrust division, testified at the St. Albans City Hall before a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing held by Vermont Sens. Patrick Leahy, a Democrat, and Bernard Sanders, an independent.

At issue is whether or not some of the largest players in the dairy industry, including Dean Foods Co. of Dallas, a large milk processor, and Dairy Farmers of America Inc., a Kansas City, Mo., dairy-farmer cooperative, are exercising too much power in the market and causing farmers’ milk prices to be depressed. Mr. Sanders contends that Dean Foods controls up to 80% of the fluid-milk market in some regions of the country.

In a statement, Dean Foods says it buys less than 15% of the nation’s supply of raw fluid milk and 60% of that comes from independents and cooperatives other than Dairy Farmers of America.

“To suggest that we control the raw-milk market, or that we are the cause of low milk prices, makes no sense. For most of the milk we buy, we pay a price that is regulated by USDA, plus premiums,” Dean Foods said. The company said it hasn’t been contacted by the Justice Department regarding this issue.

Dairy Farmers said in a statement that while it is a major player in the industry, its scope and influence are often “inflated and misrepresented.” The cooperative said that in 2008, it marketed 61.2 billion pounds of milk, representing 32% of the total milk marketed in the country.

Dairy farmers nationwide are coping with historically low milk prices after a 36% drop in the past year to the lowest level in three decades. In 2007 and part of 2008, dairy farmers enjoyed high milk prices as a booming global economy boosted demand for milk around the world. Dairy farmers expanded their herds to cash in. Then, with the onset of the recession, demand for milk weakened and dairy farmers were left with an oversupply of milk, which depressed prices.

The dairy farmers that packed the town hall expressed frustration. “These are critically terrible times,” said Kylie Quesnel, 28 years old, a dairy farmer near St. Albans.

“While it is difficult to point to one cause of the dairy farmer’s plight, Dean Foods is posting record-setting profits” while “the prices for dairy farmers are at all-time lows,” Mr. Leahy said.

At the hearing, both senators asked Ms. Varney what type of action the Justice department would be willing to take if regulators found anticompetitive practices in the industry. “There is no doubt that we will prosecute that kind of activity should we find it,” she said.

Write to Lauren Etter at lauren.etter@wsj.com

Infrastructure: RORO Links the Philippine islands By Riza Olchondra Despite the Philippines’ richnes

Infrastructure:

RORO Links the Philippine islands

By Riza Olchondra

Despite the Philippines’ richness in natural resources and agricultural products, a lack of infrastructure to bridge the archipelago’s many islands has resulted in uneven distribution of wealth.

This results in the ironic situation where both farmers and consumers go hungry. In Manila, for example, shortages in one product is not surprising anymore, while farmers in places like Mindanao often sell nearly at cost in nearby markets because they lose more to spoilage during shipping or don’t have enough stock for a whole container load.

Good thing, then, that Roll On Roll Off (RORO) Project, an infrastructure that is expected to link the different islands of the country.

The Philippine Ports Authority ( PPA) and the Maritime Industry Authority (MIA) are overseeing the project’s operations.

Seeing the ports and systems in place, private company Aboitiz Transport System (ATS) has pioneered a total supply chain service. Under its RORO program farmers can ship their goods, in bulk and retail-size quantities. FRUITS OF VISION

ATS’s 2G0, a supporter of the government’s Nautical Highway project through its RORO service, has also lent its expertise to the Department of Agriculture’s (DA) programs.

ATS has introduced the service to Mindanao fruit growers, among others.

RORO is a service that allows the loading and unloading of self-driven vehicles onto the vessel which results in increased efficiency and speed-to-market.

“We have simplified the process of distribution. With RORO, fruit shippers can reduce their post-harvest losses because we have cut the number of steps it takes to get their produce to the market,” Jerome Santos, sales manager for 2GO Solutions said.

“RORO is key to 2GO’s long-term goal of lowering our country’s total supply chain cost” company Chief Operating Officer Mike Camahort said.

2GO’s RORO was launched in 2004 and has significantly grown since then.

“The reception in the market for this service has been good as it simplifies the way of doing business,” Camahort added.

HUNGER ADDRESSED

2GO also worked with the DA when it launched its Less than a Container Load (LCL) service via the department’s Barangay Food Terminal (BFT) and Bagsakan sa Palengke initiative.

2GO’s LCL service allows farmers to ship small volumes of perishable products as often as needed.

“Through the LCL, 2GO can transport vegetables, poultry, meat, fruits and ice cream with a low minimum requirement of 0.5 cubic meters. It’s very suitable for small and medium businesses,” 2GO president Sabin Aboitiz said.

The company said that even big businesses can benefit from the LCL service.

Through the LCL, farmers can consolidate demand requirements and load them onto the 2GO cold-reefer trucks to be distributed to all areas via ATS’ RORO service.

Through this partnership between 2GO and the DA, farmers are able to send their goods without the need for middlemen which greatly lowers their costs.

Farmers are given a competitive edge in the Luzon market thus empowering them to sell not only at the farm level but at the wholesale level as well.

Meanwhile, Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap stressed the importance of 2GO’s role in the department’s programs to connect farms to markets.

“2GO is very critical because we definitely need a logistics handler to move commodoties. If you don’t partner with the handler, they can give unreasonable rates. 2GO has given us a very competitive offer for the Mindanao growers and we are able to negotiate directly with them” Yap said.

2GO’s supply chain service, launched in January 2007, completed 2GO’s line of services which starts from the release of goods from the manufacturer/producer to the delivery of products to customers and their various selling channels as well. The Cold Chain LCL marked the entry of 2GO’s supply chain into the movement of perishable commodities.

Cold chain, a temperature-controlled supply chain, is an uninterrupted series of storage and distribution activities under a given temperature range. Cold chains are common in the food and pharmaceutical industries and also some chemical shipments. 2GO is offering this service as a new option for customers to send smaller volumes of cargo that require cold storage. Customers will no longer need to worry about filling up a truck or container first because by sending smaller volumes of their cold chain cargo, they can ship more frequently.

2GO piloted its Cold Chain service in October 2007. Since then, the service has grown continually and now helps expand the distribution reach of players like Mekeni and Creamline, among others.

“Aside from serving corporate customers, we dream of putting the farmers and fishermen in touch with retailers in the markets. We want to make fresh produce and seafoods more affordable for consumers and more profitable for farmers and fishermen,” adds Michelle Aboitiz.

Enabling the Cold Chain services are the CRYO companies – Reefer Van Specialist Inc. (RVSI) and Reefer Trucks Specialist Inc. (RTSI) – which the Aboitiz Transport group came to wholly-own last June 2007.

CRYO has been in the business of refrigerated transport since 1982 and has been a trusted partner of the Aboitiz group for years, making the acquisition strategic.

“CRYO has over a hundred reefer containers and 50 reefer trucks which will be used for 2GO’s Cold Chain LCL. This enables 2GO to offer farmers, fishermen, food manufacturers and processors, and SME’s (small and medium enterprises) a more cost-efficient way of shipping their temperature-controlled cargo,” says 2GO Cold Chain VP-COO Michelle Aboitiz.

CRYO national operations manager Manny Arcilla said the LCL started in Boracay, Cebu, and Davao and will continue in Cagayan, Manila and other ports “to encourage clients to experience the solutions provided by 2GO.”

Demand Audits of Cheese/Butter Cold Storage Inventories!

Call Dairy Programs Office of Chief Economist John Mengle 202-720-4664

Whether you are responsible of taking care of 100 cows or 10,000 cows, at the end of the day we are accountable for their well being and production. As business owners, we are accountable to our banks, co-ops, and government to report accurately our numbers of production and income. We are subjected to audits from any of these entities to report accurately at our expense. After all our compliance, our product is recorded and documented. The milk we produce then leaves our dairies and our end price is left at the hands of those who purchase and manufacture our product for profit.

I ask this very simple question. Why are those who purchase our product and have the responsibility to report those inventories, (Cheese/Butter), to the government (NASS Cold Storage) NOT required to have scheduled and mandatory audits? No audits, none…ever! Even a slight error in this reporting can have an indirect affect on our milk price. (Some of these companies have reported record profits this past quarter).

It then brings me to ask another question, who is opposing these audits? If they are following proper reporting procedures as set by the guidelines then I do not see why there would be opposition to comply with audits.

I am urging each of us to contact legislation, co-ops, and industry representatives to demand that reported government inventories have mandatory audits from an outside agency. I am grateful for MILC and other government assistance. I would like to see some of that money go towards these audits. It would assist in supply vs. demand triggers that eventually hinder our bottom line.

At the end of the day our price, as in any business, is based on market demand. We must work towards the stabilization of our supply to be sync with demand. I don’t know of any business that wants the burden to produce more to remain unprofitable.

Call for mandatory audits of Cold Storage inventories!

Thank you!

Trying to hang on to my “Pollyanna” but some things just don’t seem right!

I have spent two hours this morning calling Washington DC! Since word of Kraft and Dean Foods record profits last quarter and dairy farmers record losses, I have been perplexed! I have been bothered for a very long time about our price discovery system it’s accuracy and transparency in light of it being so thinly traded.

Our co-ops are stating that we are “short” milk in California they are worried about contracts. Yet we have not seen our milk prices rise or even the futures move yet. I am asking WHY? I mean if we are short and our product is needed…wouldn’t we get more money? The answer stated is always the same, “they have too much in their inventory”. So it begins to nag me again. Who’s inventory? Who’s reporting? Who is auditing?

So after many calls I got to speak with Mr. Colwell. He handles NASS Cold Storage Reports and explained who they survey. They only survey long term cold storage facilities that hold cheese and butter for more than 30 days. They don’t require distributors or exporters to report. He admitted that questions of “ownership” have come up. For example when it was purchased but held for aging. I asked if these reporters are subjected to audits. He stated “There is NO auditing function in place”. It is the “honor system”. I don’t know, I hate to be cynical, but I have a HUGE issue with this! Our banks audit our facilities! Do they think that greed and corruption could not breed when the reporters have no accountability? Any fraction of misreporting inventory is an indirect factor of the price we get!

We need to take action! I was told that we could request an “authority to audit” but might be declined due to funds. I can assure you that price support / MILC money would be better invested by the auditing and making these facilities accountable for their reported inventories.

I have left a message for American Marketing Services, Chief Economist of Dairy Programs, John Mengle (202)720-4664 to call me. I am going to directly ask what it will take to get a formal audit of cold storage inventories! I suggest that you do the same. If they get enough pressure, quite possibly, we can know the true numbers in the inventories and obtain an unbiased audit report!

Please forward this on and contact your co-op reps, industry reps, anyone that can put pressure for these audits. These audits are our right. It is our livelihood at word of those making record profits while we struggle to feed our cows!

PLEASE sit back no longer! ACTION is what we need!

School begins tommorrow and I will be doing my posts in the evening from now on. I will also no long

School begins tommorrow and I will be doing my posts in the evening from now on. I will also no longer be posting on weekends.

We are very busy planning for more cold storage in our basement. Cold storage is the perfect way to keep food for a preparedness program. Once the space is ready, food can be stored with no inputs from fossil fuels and regardless of what is happening to the grid. Vegetables and fruits that store well are beets, carrots, turnips and apples. Cabbage, leeks and Brussel sprouts also store well this way. Believe it or not, many hard cheeses, hard salamis and hams also store well as long as the space can be kept at a constant cold temperature and free of vermin. The closer you can keep the temperature to 38 degrees, the longer your food will last.

We have a corner of the basement that has a high window. Our plan is to build walls and insulate them and the ceiling with r-36 batting . The floor is already damp. Bruce is running a vent from the window to the floor to bring in colder out side air. We can block the vent if it gets too cold. I will store produce in individual bins between layers of dry leaves. It is critical that any produce chosen for long term storage be in perfect condition and checked regularly. I would go so far as to suggest that you plan menus each week that utilize your stored produce. It is so easy to forget about it and then find yourself with a mess to clean up and bins of wasted food.

Potatoes and onions need a different kind of environment. Both can tolerate somewhat warmer temperatures but need it dryer. Squash and pumpkins like it warmer yet. In fact, we have had good luck storing them in an unused bedroom.

Be sure any food you store has been properly cured. I hope you have a good book on this subject in your library. There are lots of variables and it’s important to do it right. I lost a whole bunch of potatoes my first year gardening because I didn’t know that they couldn’t be stored with apples. The ethylene the apples give off turn the potatoes green.

We actually had a totally different idea for our cold room but the best laid plans as they say. It pays to be flexible, Once Bruce had built a room for the new freezer, he realized how much easier it would be to replicate that on the other side of the basement than to build a whole new set of hinged stairs. it will also be easier to regulate the temperature and retrieve the produce.

It occurs to me just how lucky I am to have a partner with the kind of skills Bruce has. If I didn’t, I would be looking for a friend or neighbor I could swap skills for food with. I know people who do this stuff as a single but I couldn’t. I need husband and children to get it all done.

Just to end on a really happy note. We just finished a fabulous dinner with corn, potato, kale and leek soup with home made bread. The entire meal came from our garden except the milk in the soup and that came from a local farmer. I usually add white fish to this soup. I gave Bruce a whole set of fishing gear for Christmas. I think fishing gear is something every family near a body of fishable water should have in their storage supplies. I would love to have my own fish in the freezer.

General Data has supplied bar coding, wireless data collection and advanced labeling system and tech

General Data has supplied bar coding, wireless data collection and advanced labeling system and technologies to warehouses and distribution centers for over 25 years. Our customers know that our team of experts can develop data collections solutions that solve some of the most difficult challenges.

One of our customers, a large commercial baker and retail supplier of frozen bakery goods, was working with General Data to improve their existing bar code data collection warehouse operation, order picking process, and inventory control system. Their current processes used legacy portable handheld devices to batch collect information. They asked General Data to design a solution that:

supported real-time data collection to eliminate batch uploading and downloading

included data collection devices designed to operate in a cold environment

increased scanning ability to improve productivity

increased shipping capability to handle more, higher volume orders

adhere to a strict, limited budget

Keeping the customer’s objectives in mind, our team of experts were developed a solution that incorporated low-temperature fork-lift mounted wireless terminals built to operate in cold environments. Wireless access points were installed that worked with the existing wireless backbone to achieve maximum wireless coverage for the warehouse operation. A custom software package allowed for real-time data collection.

The result? Real-time data collection eliminated batch uploading and downloading, saved once wasted labor hours, adding up to a significant savings in labor costs. Installing forklift mounted terminals improved picking and shipping efficiences, allowing shipped product per day to increase from 100 pallets to 135 pallets, ultimately increasing our customer’s ability to handle more, higher volume orders.

Frozen food manufacturers and third-party logistics providers (3PL) know cold storage facilities create unique challenges for data collection equipment and wireless networks. Moving in and out of the cold all day creates condensation. Condensation causes computer screens to fog up, keyboards to seize up, and internal parts to corrode. This leads to significant reductions in productivity and increased repair costs.

LXE’s MX7CS is the lightest, smallest handheld data collection computer made specifically to withstand the rigours of cold storage facilities.

These changing elements – cold air, frost and condensation – create specific challenges for rugged mobile computing equipment. LXE recently published an informative white-paper that describes how these conditions impact mobile computer performance and what to look for when evaluating a device for use in cold storage.

You can read LXE’s “The Cold Hard Facts About Using Mobile Computers in Cold Storage Environments” (PDF) white-paper here.

Mobile computers must be adapted for cold environment use with heaters, housings, components and peripherals. Without these adaptations, mobile computers are at significantly elevated risk for failure, which can put your business at risk for lost productivity as well as unnecessary repair and replacement costs. Frequent battery changes and devices periodically being unusable because of condensation problems can also drive up operating costs by reducing productivity and threatening on-time performance.

It has about 53% of arable land – land available for cultivation of crops as compared to a measly average of about 11% for the rest of the world. It has some feathers in it’s cap as the second highest fruit and vegetable producer in the world, 6th largest producer of fish and such like but still doesn’t make up to the top 10 food exporting countries.

If it weren’t for some severe infrastructure and technology issues, there is actually stopping for this gigantic food bowl. With large tracts of arable land, inexpensive labour and high-quality produce tumbling out of the barns, there is a potential so huge that sometimes, the scope and scale is almost unbelievable.

However, if one had to point out at one single single reason as to why the Indian agricultural industry is such a laggard when pitted against the global standards, it could be the pathetic state of the logistics, distribution and and an inefficient supply chain. India faces an acute problem of large amounts of food wasted away due to the lack of a proper cold storage, cold chain and frozen food distribution system.

If only this was in place, huge amounts of food could have been processed into some kind of value added foods and sold both locally and abroad.Annually, there is usually a large amount of such agricultural produce that is waste away. If there were cold storage systems, efficient cold chain, logistics and distribution companies, it could have been possible to process these primary products into newer, secondary products and resold to consumers locally and internationally. A strategy needs to be carved out for the growth of this industry and a lot of investment action is yet to see some real action.

Investment in cold storage, cold chain distribution, installation of food processing plants across the country, applied research on harvesting technologies an a rapid development of the food retail industry are all necessary steps that would ensure an organic growth in this sector.

What is Cold Chain?

A cold chain is basically a logistics system, which helps in maintaining and providing a series of facilities for ensuring ideal storage conditions for the persihables from the point of origin to the point of sale. A well developed and efficiently organized cold chain reduces wastage, spoilage and helps keeps the perishables intact thereby helping to maintain the quality of the harvested food products ultimately making the whole system cost effective to the farmers and that which ensures top-notch quality to the end user.

We have a concrete slab foundation with basement. We used a section of our basement—framed it (paid a friend who needed some cash for this work), vapour barriered it, insulated it with formaldehyde free insulation and put a sealed door on it. Adhered the plastic to the concrete with acoustic caulk and sealed the seams with vapour barrier tape. We drilled two holes in the masonry at the top (the only places we could) for air to come in and vent out. We are still having problems getting the temp. exactly where we want it but had great success storing organic apples from November through April. We use about two apples each a day so we bought 300 apples locally. We lost a total of 6 apples. Not bad!

Cost: framing, labour plastic, insulation, used metal door $800

So, evidently a year has passed since I was last doing this… This Bungie day is much more dull

So, evidently a year has passed since I was last doing this…

This Bungie day is much more dull for us gamers though; last year we got a free map – Cold Storage, a ViDOC, podcast and, in what we thought was going to be tradition… a Bungie Day theme and Gamer Picture pack. We’ve been given a theme and gamer picture pack every year since 2007.

Way to break that streak.

So, I hear you ask — What are we getting this year?

The “Bungie vs. The World” playlist. It’s a playlist consisting entirely of community made forge-maps on Foundry and [mainly] Sandbox which makes the Mythic Map pack a must.
The reason for the name of the playlist is that Bungie employees will be playing for the majority of the day tomorrow and if you beat one of their teams-of-four in a game you earn Recon armor.

Screenshots of the 3 other Mythic maps including Heretic — confirmed as a near perfect port of Midship from Halo 2.

A Bungie Day podcast.

The last two items on that list I didn’t think we’d be getting when I first wrote this, so it’s looking a bit better now.

I wasn’t expecting another free map, I knew that was one-off, but I was looking forward to a Bungie Day NXE theme — the previous one’s look rubbish with the new dash. Sadface.

Oh well, only 77 days till Halo 3: ODST is released.

/

* They haven’t said there won’t be a theme or gamer picture pack, its just that this time last year we knew there would be one.
