In August, we entered the 2009 college football season with several assumptions. We figured the Florida Gators would not be challenged by anyone in the nation (mostly from looking at their schedule). Lou Holtz told us Notre Dame would be national champions. And we heard all kinds of other nonsense.

But here are 10 things that we actually learned during the season, whether we assumed them to be true in the preseason or not.

- Charlie Weis is a pitiful head coach. When hired in 2005, Weis proclaimed at his opening press conference that his team would have, and I quote, “a decided schematic advantage against all opponents.” With that arrogance, you’d think he would lead Notre Dame to victories over teams like Navy and Connecticut. Weis landed the top recruit for the 2007 season in Jimmy Clausen, a kid who won the California state championship all four years in high school. If Weis can’t win with that kid, then that “decided schematic advantage” needs to go back to the NFL.

- Captain Bobby Bowden of the SS Florida State has made it quite clear that he is willing to take his own ship down, just because he also built it. Even if he can no longer remember the names of his crew.

- It’s time for the “small schools” to man up and join a real conference. TCU could instantly make the Big 12 the best conference in college football if they replaced Iowa State in the Northern Division. The Pac 10 could finally have the 12-team conference and a conference championship game if Boise State and Utah joined.

- The SEC Championship Game has been coined “The Real National Title Game,” even though the winner has to beat Texas, likely better than Alabama and Florida. If Colt McCoy were an SEC quarterback, he’d be a shoo-in for the Heisman Trophy, and the Longhorns have won Big 12 games by an average of 21.5 points. Look at their schedule — it isn’t a joke.

- Speaking of jokes, Florida’s schedule. The Gators have played one (1) ranked team all season, but continue to be lauded as the greatest team with the greatest leader ever in Tim Tebow. Maybe the SEC just stinks this year. Would I be praised if I stepped into a junior high football game and beat a bunch of little kids?

- The “U” isn’t back. Miami has gone 9-3 this season and has a shot at a 10-win season, but we can’t call one of the most successful programs in college football history “back” when they finish third in their own division of the ACC, which is absolutely a crappy conference this year.

- Michigan is only getting worse, not better. We’ll leave it at that.

- Georgia Tech will win a national title before Georgia does. They have the coaching, they have the discipline, and they have the athletes. Georgia may be just 12 hours into a 365-day session of bragging rights, but that doesn’t change the fact that they may be sitting at home watching the Jackets play for a FedEx Orange Bowl in January.

- Cincinnati is now the best team in Ohio. I’ve said it all year and I’ll say it again — the Bearcats could have won several of the major conferences in college football this season. They are good. And no, Brian Kelly will not take that Notre Dame job when it opens up.

- Southern California has had a tough year, but they are always one of the classiest teams off the field. Watching them run up scores can make fans dislike their style of play, but if you knew why they do it, maybe they would get more leeway. The Trojans are always bringing in children with debilitating illnesses or injuries and allowing them to be a part of the team. They rally around these kids at team practice and score touchdowns for the kids who will never have the chance to play the sport. If you watched “College Gameday” yesterday, you saw the story of 7th-grader Jake Olson, who was made an honorary member of the team as blindness set on. And before you say the Trojans are done being a national contender, don’t forget about how they lost their tailback, Stafon Johnson, who nearly suffocated during a weightlifting accident early in the season.

With one week to go and then the slew of bowl games, we have plenty of time left to learn more about the 2009 season. But this is why the game is played — because occasionally we are wrong in August.

First off, I hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving break around these parts and also congrats to both the Bucs and the Lady Bucs for getting wins against North Alabama on Saturday at Canale Arena. The Bucs will be back in action Monday against Alabama-Huntsville in another doubleheader at Canale Arena. We’ll be back on Monday night for another episode of STGS with one of the Grizz Girls.

Later this afternoon, the University of Memphis will name LSU assistant Larry Porter, the first African-American to coach the football program in their 97-year existence.

Last week, when Western Kentucky hired Willie Taggart, also an African-American and a former Hilltopper quarterback, I said on this very blog that in order to pump energy and excitement into this football program, you’re going to have to get someone who understands the community and most importantly, knows how to recruit.

Porter fits that same description, given the fact that he’s been national recruiter of the year twice as well as part of a national championship squad in 2007 with LSU plus coached five 1,000-yard rushers in stints at LSU, Oklahoma State, and Arkansas State and he played football here in Memphis.

He knows how it feels to be on the playing surface of the Liberty Bowl on autumn Saturdays, understands what the Tiger football faithful go through after wins and of course, losses.

While this isn’t Terry Bowden or Tuberville, but one of the many stars who played for the Tigers, I will say this, should Porter put together an excellent staff, shake as many hands with members of the Memphis community and most importantly, build a fence around the Memphis area and get top recruits, then the Tigers could be on the road towards respectability in Conference USA.

With under a minute remaining, USC was leading crosstown rival UCLA 21-7 Saturday night. The Trojans seemed content to run out the clock when Bruins coach Rick Neuheisel called a timeout. Returning to the field, USC faked a run directly into the line of scrimmage and quarterback Matt Barkley threw up top to a wide open Damian Williams. Williams scored untouched on the 48-yard touchdown bomb. Final score: USC 28 UCLA 7.

After some USC taunting and sideline celebrating, a fight nearly ensued (see above video.) The LA Times claims the late score by Pete Carroll’s squad left the “city inflamed.”

TIM TEBOW THROWS FOR THREE TOUCHDOWNS AND RUNS IN TWO MORE IN VICTORY OVER FLORIDA STATE

Tim Tebow may just win a second Heisman Trophy after all.

Playing in the final regular season game of his career, the Florida quarterback accounted for five touchdowns in a 37-10 victory over arch rival Florida State. A record crowd of more than 90,000 attended Senior Day in Gainesville. Tebow completed 17 of 21 passes and may have finally pushed Seminoles coach Bobby Bowden into retirement.

According to the Miami Herald,Bowden “acknowledeged for the first time” that he may not return as the Florida State coach next season. The Seminoles finished 6-6 this season. At his post game press conference, Bowden admitted he would do some “soul searching” about his future.

Here we are in the last few weeks of the college football season, and as has been an annual occurenc

Here we are in the last few weeks of the college football season, and as has been an annual occurence, the BCS arguments have been circling the airwaves.

I am a huge opponent to the BCS, the main reason being the lack of consistency and logic. Here are some random thoughts that I have on the BCS.

Mark Richt, head coach of the Georgia Bulldogs, scheduled a game at Oklahoma State for the opening weekend of the 2009 season. Oklahoma State was 6 point favorites, as they were picked by many to have a 1 or 2 loss season and head to a BCS bowl. Georgia lost that game 24-10.

On that same day, Florida was hosting Charleston Southern in Gainesville, and Alabama, to their credit, was playing Virginia Tech a few miles up the road in Atlanta.

Looking back, even if Georgia would have run the table after that game, it is unlikely they would play for the BCS Championship game.

Obviously, Mark Richt wanted to play a tough game, and get his players valuable experience against a top team before they step into conference play in the toughest conference in the county.

The question becomes, what benefit does Georgia really get from playing this game? If Georgia scheduled a cupcake at home instead of the game at Oklahoma State, and went undefeated in the SEC and won in the SEC Championship game, there is no way that they would not play for the National Championship. So where is the benefit in playing a tough game that first week?

The same question can be asked to USC, who played on the road at Ohio State in week 2. Teams like USC and Georgia do not need that signature win to put on their resume to boost their BCS number. If they run the table in their respective conferences, they are going to be in.

The BCS system basically encourages coaches of the big time programs to schedule all cupcakes outside of conference play.

A team like Virginia Tech is in a different situation in playing Alabama in week 1, because the ACC, while a major conference, is not known as an extremely tough conference. Running the table in the ACC would not guarantee Virginia Tech a spot if 2 other teams in better conferences went undefeated.

But for a team like Alabama, Florida, Georgia, or USC, I just do not see the point. So Mark Richt, a guy who wants to toughen up his football team and play a legitimate game in the opening week, really is penalized for going out and doing that. That is certainly not my idea of a logical system.

Then we talk about Boise State. Chris Peterson, following his win over Nevada, was asked his thoughts on the BCS. Peterson said that hopefully the BCS does the right thing, implying of course that his team, Boise State, should get the nod in the title game. My response is one of disbelief. Boise played a great game at home against Oregon. Peterson thinks that they should get in, over a team like Florida who battles every single week in conference play?

Yes, give Peterson credit for building his team up above the competition in his conference. Give him credit for avoiding letdowns that so many teams encounter throughout the course of the year. Give him credit for scheduling Oregon in a game that allowed Boise to showcase their talent against a stronger school. I’m sure Peterson believes that he has a team comparable to the powerhouses in the country. However, does his team’s resume show that? Absolutely not.

Having said that, much of the blame should not fall on Boise State. You cannot blame Boise for the conference that they play in. I’m sure they would love to change conferences, but it is not as easy as simply wanting to switch. Furthermore, why would a top team schedule Boise State? Maybe they could get a middling team in a major conference to schedule them, but a few of those wins would still not be enough to propel Boise. Frankly, I am surprised that Oregon agreed to play a game at Boise to start the season.

In order for Boise to be completely respected, they would have to continue to blow out teams in their conference, while at the same time scheduling 3 bigtime out of conference games. Does anyone see Pete Carroll banging down the door to play Boise in a no win, everything to lose situation? How about Urban Meyer?

The BCS says to Boise, you need to play better teams and show us more during the season. Yet at the same time the BCS says to these better teams, run the table in your top conference, and you will be in the BCS Championship game. The BCS says to these better teams, avoid the potential upset in non-conference games.

It’s a circle that simply does not meet. It is completely flawed logic.

College football is a past-time on Saturday’s in the fall. People gather around their living rooms, bars, and stadiums across the country, rooting their teams on. It is a billion dollar industry in this country. There is no excuse for the current BCS system. None at all.

If there was currently a playoff, and someone suggested this current BCS system to take the place of that playoff, the person suggesting that would get laughed out-of-town. It seems as though these schools and decision makers are so used to confusion and illogical scenarios, that they simply do not care anymore. It’s as though they have an addiction, and they are too far gone to realize how senseless their actions are.

(BCS now at the podium)

Hey Urban Meyer, continue to play Charleston Southern and run the table in the SEC, and we will have a spot waiting for you. Avoid teams like Boise State who could destroy your season while you really have nothing to gain from beating them.

Hey Chris Peterson, you don’t have a spot until you schedule a team like Florida and beat them. Here’s Urban’s number, I just got off the phone with him…Good luck.

Hey Mark Richt, forget about starting off the season against a formidable opponent, just schedule the cupcakes and wait for conference play to build your resume. Who cares if your QB needs experience? It’s the BCS Mark!

Hey all coaches….We are ranking you based on a points system. So you know how Herm said, you play to win the game? Forget that…You play to improve your ranking!

Hey Mack Brown…While you are playing in your Big 12 championship game, Jim Tressel and his Buckeyes are actually home enjoying football on ESPN’s family of networks. Oh yeah, good luck against Nebraska!

Hey Urban, remember when Lane Kiffin played that game like a scared puppy, and you just kept running the ball because you knew they had no chance to score? You know, you were playing to win the game. Screw that, run up the score, and impress our computers!

Thus is the logic of the BCS. You draw your own conclusions.

Thanksgiving. Endless food. Rivalry football games. Top that. You can’t. If there is one thing

Thanksgiving. Endless food. Rivalry football games. Top that.

You can’t.

If there is one thing about the rivalry weekend that is certain, it is that nothing is certain. Just ask the ACC. We’ll start out east, in Carolina, with what we learned.

In case you didn’t already know, the ACC is bad. Really bad. The only reason North Carolina got ranked this week is because there was no one else. It might be true the conference beat itself up the same way the Pac-10 did, but the difference is that the Pac-10 won some non-conference games. The ACC, if you recall, started the season with a blowout loss by Virginia Tech outside of conference, lost two games to TCU at home and had those early slip ups against FCS competition. Today, the season closed much like it started, with South Carolina easily beating Clemson and Georgia taking down Georgia Tech. For the Gamecocks, it really was easy. After C.J. Spiller opened the game by taking the kickoff back for six, USC took over, scoring the next 24 points by rushing for 228 yards. During the day, that North Carolina team lost to N.C. State. Ouch. Then as the lights came on, it was the marquee game, Tech and Georgia. A Bulldogs team that was squarely in the bottom half of the SEC all season, with losses to Kentucky and Tennessee, took care of business, using a much-maligned defense to beat Tech. That means that both participants in next week’s ACC championship game lost to second-tier SEC teams on Saturday. Not good.

The Big Ten doesn’t belong. Best part about this weekend? No Big Ten games. And no one noticed. The 12 pm E.T. time slot was significantly better without a sloppy Iowa-Indiana matchup with no flash and no real competition. The conference as a whole, from top to bottom, simply does not belong.

While it has been somewhat of a down year for the SEC, the top of the conference is on a level it hasn’t seen in a while. Yes, Auburn should’ve beaten Alabama, but again, rivalry game. And guess what, despite having their best back and one-time Heisman candidate shut down, ‘Bama took care of business, like they’ve done all season. And Florida played one of the worst defenses in the country, with the numbers to show it. But remember at the beginning of the year, we pointed out that Florida had lost to an SEC West team for the past several years in a row, but obviously didn’t this year. Take that along with Alabama making it through the rugged West undefeated and you have one helluva game set for next week.

Boise State belongs in the BCS. They can thank Oklahoma State, but they belong there now. The Broncos are 12-0 and overlooked. If they weren’t overlooked, Kellen Moore would be a Heisman candidate. This team deserves a trip to Glendale for the Fiesta Bowl, not down the street to their own bowl game. And, should Texas lose the Big-12 championship game, TCU belongs in the national championship game.

No one really knows how good Texas is – yet. The Longhorns have literally just been taking care of business, easily. Texas A&M is going to pretty good next year, on offense at least and again, it was a rivalry game, in College Station. Have you ever been at your best in College Station? Not possible. It will take a game against an SEC opponent for Colt McCoy to validate his career. He needs a “Vince Young moment“.

The Pac-10 is the conference 1A in 2009. If the SEC is the best conference, which isn’t such a slam dunk as usual, the Pac-10 is definitely 1A. From 1-9 this is the one solid conference. ASU lost on a last second field goal to Georgia. UCLA won at Tennessee. They took care of the Mountain West. Washington played with LSU for four quarters. USC won at Ohio State. And then the teams beat each other up every week. Except, again, one.

Which leads to the worst big six conference team in America: Washington State. Here is the most telling stat: Washington State (1-11) did not lead a single game for a single second in regulation all season. Yes, they have a win, but they needed a late touchdown to tie the game against SMU and send it into OT, where they won. They came into the final week thinking they might have a chance, but instead were shutout in Seattle for the first time since 1964. Washington toyed with WSU, dominating them 30-0 in the Apple Cup. The Cougars are now 1-17 in the last two years in the Pac-10 and just 3-21 in Paul Wulff’s two seasons. This is how bad it has gotten for WSU: at one point Washington knocked both of WSU’s healthy QB’s from the game and, not wanting to put their prized freshman into the game, the Cougars inserted their backup punter.

Finally, Toby Gerhart should be the frontrunner for the Heisman. Now, this should be qualified with this: Colt McCoy should win the trophy. McCoy is the winningest quarterback in college football history. Unbelievable that he hasn’t won the Heisman. No, it isn’t a lifetime achievement award, but it isn’t like the guy has bad numbers. In the rivalry game he scored five touchdowns and ran for a career high yardage total. He plays big in big games and has put up some crooked numbers. He should win. However, based on 2009 alone, Gerhart is the man. He just plays bigger as the games get bigger. Against Notre Dame today he went over 200 yards, again. He ran for the game-winning touchdown and that came after throwing for one earlier in the game. A big bowl game (240 yards or so) will give Gerhart 2,000 yards rushing. He is that good. Another Pac-10 guy could split the west coast vote, Jeremiah Masoli, but it should be the big Stanford back. And it will be hard not to look at that head coach, Harbaugh, as coach of the year.

Plus, finals is less than three days away. Hooray.

On the flipside, The Ladyfriend is still going strong. I miss her something fierce, but I am looking forward to spending quality time with her in NYC. So I’ve got that going for me (if you didn’t get the reference, see Caddyshack).

I know, I know. It has been an extremely long time since I dropped my last post. My apologies. Thing

I know, I know. It has been an extremely long time since I dropped my last post.

My apologies.

Things have been busy around my house the past few months. My wife and I got married, I’ve been working a lot lately, and I’ve also been going to school in the evening. All of the above consume my life on a daily basis, leaving me no time to do anything.

On another note, this College Football season has not been as great as I thought. A lot of new teams showed their colors and were introduced to the Top 25, and others ended up being a dud (UGA, Auburn, USC, Oklahoma, etc.) and didn’t do all that well.

Auburn, my favorite team, started off this season at 5-0. With their new head coach, the program was under a lot of heat from the Tuberville fan-crowd. After this great start, Auburn started to play some competitive teams; all of them coming from the SEC. Needless to say, the only three teams that Auburn beat in the SEC were Miss. State, Ole’ Miss and Tennessee. Their loss to Alabama was a hell of a game, and I’ll give it to them, but they should have been playing like that all season.

The University of Georgia bombed this whole season. Once thought of as Top 10 contender, UGA has fallen to a 6-5 season, losing to the likes of OSU, LSU(4), Tennessee, Florida (1), and Kentucky. Their new starting QB, Joe Cox, leads the SEC with 18 touchdown passes this season, but has also thrown the second most in interceptions (11). Let’s not forget the amount of penalties that occur during UGA’s games, either. They’re averaging 70 yards in penalties a game, the second year in a row that they’ve done this.

Now onto to good stuff…

UGA is playing GT tonight in their annual rival game, also known as, “Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate.”

And “hate”, it is.

So far tonight, UGA has rushed for over 300 yards. Freshmen Waushan Ealey has carried the ball over 160 yards, averaging 10.6 yards per carry.

Amazing.

Out of nowhere, UGA has pulled their defense together and stopped everything GT has thrown at them. GT has a combined 266 yards, 148 rushing and 118 receiving.

With 12 minutes left in the 4th quarter, it’s tough to say what will come out of this game. UGA lead GT 17-3 at the half, but it should also be mentioned that UGA lead GT by 16 at the half last season, ultimately loosing 45-42.

I’m pulling for UGA, but there’s way too much football left to played.

On another note, here are my ‘Not-So-Top-25′ upsets of the week:

West Virginia 19, #9 Pittsburg 16
Oklahoma 27, #12 Oklahoma St. 0
South Carolina 34, #17 Clemson 17
N. Carolina St. 28, #24 N. Carolina 27
Miss. St. 41, #25 Ole Miss. 27

And finally, here are my ‘Almost-Top-25′ upsets of the week:

#2 Alabama 26, Auburn 21
#3 Texas 49, Texas A&M 39
#19 BYU 26, #21 Utah 23

The ‘Not-So-Top-25′ upsets are reserved for Top 25 teams who suffer a loss during regular season. ‘Almost-Top-25′ upsets are for Top 25 teams who come within 10 points of a loss.

The first Gators-Seminoles rivalry game I ever went to was the last game that Tim Tebow, Brandon Spikes, and 23 other seniors on the Florida football team ever played at The Swamp.

The boys did not disappoint at all. A 37-10 victory, with both the offense and the defense putting on a show against the hapless Seminoles. Five touchdowns by Tebow, and an interception to end the game for the Seminoles. Meyer and Bowden against each other yet again, in what was probably Bowden’s last game in Gainesville.

Just seeing all the Florida seniors take one last sprint out of the tunnel before the game kind of sent chills down the spine. It felt surreal knowing that this was the last time this team will ever play with each other at The Swamp, but by halftime, the Gators managed to make it feel like “business as usual” with that 24-0 lead.

I stuck around longer than usual after the game to see the team gather one last time around the Florida band and sing the alma mater and fight song. Knowing that this was the last time the tradition will occur this year at home brought about the realization that this is the end for football at The Swamp until the spring football game. With no Tebow, no Spikes, no Stamper, no James…

But thankfully, they made the night memorable for themselves and every other Gator fan in the world with their performance against the Seminoles.

Beyond the game, I especially enjoyed the juxtaposition of orange and blue and garnet and gold all over campus. Fans in orange and blue socializing with friends in garnet and gold during the tailgate, then the same sets of fans nagging each other in the game (although with more of the egging by the ones in orange and blue.) It was priceless seeing the multitude of flashing camera lights go off toward the end of the game, all trying to catch one final image of Tebow in a Florida Gators uniform at The Swamp.

It was enjoyable hearing the Florida band and Florida State band play the national anthem together, but I couldn’t help but chuckle a little at how FSU’s color guard managed to still keep smiling while the crowd right in front of them showered the Seminoles with boos.

And I even saw Chris Fowler take in some football, before passing by my row to exit the stadium and prep for the college football post-game show.

After seeing a UF-FSU game in person, I finally feel like I have a real appreciation of the rivalry. Back when I was young and living in Illinois, I considered the Florida-Florida State games unimportant and wondered why their fans were so crazy about this series.

Now I understand it.

By Ben Linton

Lets put aside this 2-10 record. Throw out the 19-17 loss to Boston College. Whats more important right now is where the direction of Maryland football is heading. The obvious goal is to make it to the ACC Championship, but how do they get there? Athletic Director Debbie Yow and Coach Ralph Friedgen will discuss the future of Terps football on meetings Sunday and Monday, which will give us a clearer picture. For now, all we can talk about is next year and what we can expect.

The team only loses 14 seniors, and returns a load of talent, including Running Backs Da’Rel Scott and Davin Meggett, Wide Recievers Torrey Smith and Adrian Cannon, and Linebackers Alex Wujciak and Adrian Moten. Quarterback Jamarr Robinson showed flashes of greatness in his two starts, and may be a stud in the future under center for the Terps.

But all of that means nothing if the Terps can’t block. The Offensive Line was obviously a mess this year and huge part of the reason Maryland was not successful. The only loss is Center Phil Costa, and Left tackle Bruce Campbell will return and possibly be a pro prospect. But the development of the other lineman will be key to Maryland’s success in the future.

The defensive line wasn’t very impressive either this season, and losses three starters. Big A.J. Francis will be the only returning starter in the middle, so somebody else will have to step up. The secondary also loses three starters, with Cameron Chism the only returning player.

So it looks like Maryland will have to rely on recruiting, and it starts on the lines. Last year Maryland had the 26th best recruiting class highlighted by four-star Guard Pete White, Defensive End De’Onte Arnett, Cornerback Travis Hawkins, and Running Back Caleb Porzel. The only player to see action was Porzel, so im guessing the other three redshirted.

How does the class look this year? Take a look for yourself. Four star OL Nathaniel Clarke and DE David Mackall higlight the class, so it looks like the Terps are hitting the right spots on the recruiting trail. However, you can’t just have one good player on the line, you need at least two or three so the group plays well as a collective unit.

But when a team endures a 2-10 season, obvious changes need to be made. It will cost $4 million dollars to buyout Friedgen to fire him, so I don’t know if that is a possibility. I say just keep him around for one more year. You can’t fire Franklin since he’s the head coach in waiting, and if he’s not coach by 2011 you owe him $1 million. Not worth it. Can’t fire DC Don Brown since it was just his first year and he hasn’t had the chance to recruit players to fit his system. But something needs to be done. Something has to change. Or else Maryland may be stuck in its losing days for years to come.

The schedule next year is not very favorable either. The Terps open with Navy at M&T Bank Stadium, then take on Eastern Michigan at home. They end the non-conference with a trip to Morgantown and rival West Virginia. The conference schedule includes games at Miami, at Virginia, at Clemson, at Boston College, and home games against Florida State, Wake Forest, NC State, and Duke. Tough sledding for the Terps next season.

There are a lot of questions surfacting in College Park, and these next few days will give us a lot of understanding about the future of Maryland Football.

Game Recap

Pittsburgh received the opening kickoff and moved the ball 47 yards on 12 plays to the Notre Dame 17-yard line. The drive stalled and Pittsburgh kicked a 34-yard field goal.

After swapping possessions three times Notre Dame tied the game with a field goal a third of the way into the second quarter. Neither team could muster much offense. And then Jonathan Baldwin, Pittsburgh’s highly talented receiver, made his presence known. He caught two passes from quarterback Bill Stull for 57 yards, the second resulting in a 36-yard touchdown and a 10-3 Pittsburgh lead that it would never relinquish.

The second half featured Pittsburgh’s talented two freshman running backs as it built a seemingly insurmountable lead. After a field goal on its first possession, backup Ray Graham spelled starter Dion Lewis. His 53-yard run to the 2 on the first play of the series was nothing short of spectacular. Stopped in the backfield, Graham rerouted his run outside, and with his increasingly familiar spin-move, Graham made Notre Dame’s Sergio Brown look like a first time roller derby contestant. He cold fell down on his backside. Graham then punched it in from the 2 for a 17-3 Pittsburgh lead.

Notre Dame finally scored a touchdown on a 1-yard run by Jimmy Clausen to end the third quarter, but missed the extra point.

On its next possession, Pittsburgh returned to its featured tailback, freshman Dion Lewis. Lewis rushed for 13 yards, and after a 16-yard Stull pass to tight end Dorin Dickerson, broke a 50-yard run for a touchdown while Notre Dame’s Brown again botched a tackle and fell down. Pittsburgh made the extra point for a 27-9 Pittsburgh lead.

Not to be outdone by Baldwin, the man with the best name for a Notre Dame athlete, Golden Tate, single-handedly tried to resurrect the hopes of the Fighting Irish. In the span of two minutes, Tate caught a touchdown pass from Clausen and returned a punt 87 yards for another. After a failed two-point conversion, Notre Dame trailed 27-22.

The anxiety among the Panther faithful had risen immensely. I heard all around me grim ramblings of Pittsburgh falling apart at the end like it had against North Carolina State.

This anxiety reached a crescendo with Pittsburgh facing a third-and-one at the Notre Dame 41 with 4:27 remaining. Stull mishandled the snap from center. Guard John Malecki recovered the fumble. Pittsburgh coach Dave Wannstedt faced the decision of going for it on fourth-and-two or punting the ball. Wannstedt, however, placed his trust in his recently energized defense. It had become a strength of the team. After a few restless moments the punt team came onto the field.

More anxiety. More dread. More gloom. Golden Tate stood near the 10-yard line awaiting the football. The Fighting Irish, and Clausen, had rallied for four comeback wins in the fourth quarter this year. “Kick it out-of-bounds.” Tate wouldn’t get the opportunity to put Notre Dame ahead. The punt sailed into the end zone.

The game’s critical, and somewhat controversial, call came with Notre Dame facing a third-and-sixteen from its own 27-yard line. Clausen took the snap from center and dropped back to pass. In the process of being sacked the ball came out forward. The officials ruled incomplete pass. Then it was announced that the play was under review. The conversation in the stands was: O.K. The officials want to see if his knee was down and where to spot the ball if there was a sack. Nobody expected what came next.

Clausen had fumbled, possession Pittsburgh. The call on the field had been reversed. Everyone around me was dumbfounded, except for some Notre Dame fans who had been long convinced that the fix was in because of “Big East officials.”

The Panthers regained the ball at the Notre Dame 28-yard line with 2:10 remaining. After two rushes by Lewis for 17 yards, Stull was finally able to take a knee. Final score: Pittsburgh 27, Notre Dame 22.

Prologue There was concern. Sure. There was doubt. There was anxiety. Pittsburgh was off to its best

Prologue

There was concern. Sure. There was doubt. There was anxiety. Pittsburgh was off to its best start in 22 seasons. Could the Panthers beat Notre Dame in consecutive years? It hadn’t happened since 1986-87.

It was a big game for Pittsburgh. It was in prime time and the featured game on ABC. After all, this game was against the most storied program in the history of college football.

The previous time Pittsburgh hosted Notre Dame was at Heinz Field in 2005, the coaching debuts for both Pittsburgh’s Dave Wannstedt and Notre Dame’s Charlie Weis, where the Fighting Irish dominated and doubled up the Panthers, 42-21.

The Panthers football program had fallen on hard times, and except for a few fleeting moments, were not discussed among the elites in college football since the 1982 season when Dan Marino was wrapping up his stellar collegiate career.

True. There was the default, but earned, Bowl Championship Series game following the 2004 season against Urban Meyer’s Utah team that promptly stomped the Panthers, 31-7, in the Fiesta Bowl.

Notre Dame went onto a BCS game after that season and again the following season where they were pummeled in each, loosing 34-20 to Ohio State in the 2006 Fiesta Bowl, and 41-14 to Louisiana State in the 2007 Sugar Bowl.

By 2009 the roles had reversed. Pittsburgh entered the game 8-1, and had turned a corner. The Panthers were slowly making inroads back into the conversation of elite teams.

Since Pittsburgh knocked off West Virginia, 13-9, in Morgantown in 2007, and erased the Mountaineers hopes of a shot at the National Championship, the Panthers had won 17 of 23 games.

Pittsburgh was ranked #12 in the BCS standings, #8 in the AP poll, and #9 in the Coaches poll.

Notre Dame entered the game 6-3, and had just dropped out of the rankings entirely after a stinging home loss to Navy. Notre Dame was a program that entered the season with hopes of a BCS bowl game. Some even projected a matchup in the National Championship Game.

Every ticket in Heinz Field was sold. Fans quickly snapped up the additional standing-room-only tickets. I had never seen so many fans in the stadium. The official attendance number, 65,374.

Game on.

Sorry for the slow (ok…nonexistent) posts over the last few days. Chalk it up to sleep deprivation and the holiday. We had some ideas for posts, but due to the above reasons plus apathy we decided against them. So this is what we’re thinking: what will probably be a long(er) quick hit series of our take on the many, many things we’ve missed. Let the bullet pointing begin.

Retired?

- Allen Iverson to retire…kinda. We’re honestly kinda sad to see AI hang them up, if he actually does. It seems obvious to us that he’s still got something left in the tank, but playing in Memphis wasn’t going to help anybody. Some of his old coaches reportedly want to discuss his future with him, and we’re all for that. If, and this is a huge if, he can get in the right mindset to come off the bench and be a team player, he could be great off the bench for a contender. If he’s actually done, then he’ll go down as one of the best pure scoring guards in NBA history. Points wise, he’s the second highest scoring active player, behind only Shaq (Kobe will likely pass him soon). We’ll remember him as a dominant player, and one of the few guards we recall who could totally take over a game and carry a team (along with Kobe).

- Thanksgiving NFL Action. The Lions did what they’ve recently done on Thanksgiving, and lost. But looking beyond the score, we think Jim Schwartz and the Lions might be building something there. The foundation is there. Playoffs in two to three years. The second game of the day reminded Raider fans everywhere that Bruce Gradkowski, is not that good, although he certainly is better than JaMarcus Russell (not that hard). The Cowboys looked good, but not great in winning an easy game. The last NFL game of the day, seen by approximately 9 people because it was on the NFL Network, provided a lot of insight into who both teams were, and are. The Giants have no idea who they are, as they appear to be a power running team who can’t run the ball – it looks to us like Brandon Jacobs aged 10+ years over the offseason. We’re not exactly sure what to make of the Broncos – the passing game looked good against the Giants secondary, but who hasn’t? The running game was solid if unspectacular (more carries for Knowshon please). Defense looked good, in shutting down a talented, in enigmatic Giants offense. We like them to finish up at 10-6 (7-4 now, with two left against KC and one against OAK)

We Only Talk About Stafford to Post Pictures Like These...

- College Football Rivalry Weekend. A lot of these games are close, which is why we love this weekend, even if the games aren’t great on paper. #3Texas and Texas A&M staged a classic shootout that prevented our nap on Thanksgiving. Auburn and #2 Alabama went down to the end yesterday afternoon. West Virginia took down highly ranked Pittsburgh in The Backyard Brawl. Boise State and Nevada also kept us up late last night (we’re suckers for blue turf and some pistol offense). Right now we’re watching South Carolina try and hang on at home against a vastly superior Clemson team (ranked #18) [UPDATE: South Carolina just rubbed it in a little, throwing a TD pass on 4th and goal with 2:40 left, now 34-17]. Mississippi State is taking #25 Ole Miss behind the woodshed in the Egg Bowl. Oklahoma is beating #12 Oklahoma State in the Bedlam game, which we’re all for since it ups Boise’s chances for a BCS game. Coming up later today and tonight, #1 Florida hosts Florida State and in the best named game of the year, #7 Georgia Tech hosts Georgia (game is called “Clean, Old Fashioned Hate” – just better than the “Holy War” between BYU and Utah – also played today). These games make college football, and we try to watch them all.

The Iron Bowl

- The Heisman Trophy. We’ve debated doing a full post on this, but we’ll shorten it up to get it in this post. We think Mark Ingram might have cost himself the Trophy with his game against Auburn yesterday(16 carries for 30 yards). Colt McCoy, on the other hand might have won it for himself with a dominant performance on Thursday night (470 total yards, 5 TDs). We personally don’t think that Tebow belongs in the conversation based on numbers, but he’ll be invited at the very least – based on his leadership, his ministry, and his ability to yell in the locker room. We’d vote for John Nesbitt (QB – Georgia Tech), Ndamakong Suh (DT – Nebraska), or CJ Spiller (RB – Clemson) before Tebow, and maybe one of them will manage to pull an invite.

We think we’ve covered most of what we missed. We’ll have our NFL picks on Tuesday, along with a preview of next weekend’s “championship weekend” in college football. We’ll also try to get up some College Basketball Stuff, as we’ve totally neglected that so far.

After a chilly, foggy Friday, the weather gods have smiled on Moscow today — it’s a beautiful day for college football and basketball! The Vandals will take on Utah State at 2 p.m. in the Kibbie Dome and Eastern Washington at 7 p.m. in Mem Gym.

For the 7-4 Vandals, they’ll be looking for a Senior Day to remember as Idaho closes out its best regular season in a decade and looks ahead to its first bowl since 1998. After two ugly losses, QB Nathan Enderle should be back in action and ready to lead the Vandals to a momentum-building victory over the 3-8 Aggies.

We’ll bring you all the action from the Dome with play-by-play commentary, analysis and chat at Vandal Nation Live, starting at 1:30 p.m. with our pregame show. Tip-off against the Eagles is scheduled for 7 p.m. Our game preview is here.

This Weekend in the WAC

New Mexico State takes on San Jose State at 5 p.m. in Dick Tomey’s best remaining chance at getting a WAC win before retirement. Navy visits Hawaii in a game the Warriors must win to keep their slim bowl hopes alive. We’ve got the lowdown on all three of today’s WAC contests here.

Yesterday, Boise State beat Nevada, 44-33, to clinch at least a share of the WAC championship. Louisiana Tech and Fresno State are idle.
