Friendly Neighborhood proved to be a great choice for our group as it was comprised of not only a large residential community with parks and schools, but also areas booming with industry (Okay, not quite booming; buzzing maybe?). The busiest street in the neighborhood was Willamette, with shops and restaurants lining the street from 22^nd to 28^th. The great thing about this part of Friendly was the number of local stores that seemed to be thriving midday Saturday.

Metropol, Ashley’s, Turtle’s Bar and Grill, Mulligans Pub, and Fina Taqueria are just a few of the restaurants that can be found in this area. That’s not to say there weren’t any large businesses. Standard stores such as McDonalds, Hollywood Video and Rite Aid also shared the sides of the street with local shops. However, possibly because of the recession there were a handful of stores that had gone out of business or had “For Lease” signs displayed.

One very noticeable empty building was a pink and purple one that Susie thought had originally been an exercise facility for kids – it would certainly explain the loud colors. After exploring Willamette we continued to College Hill where we encountered some of the more expensive looking houses in Eugene.

This neighborhood was not only limited to the well-off though, as some smaller houses were found on the same streets. There were several churches that we found, including a Catholic School. The other school in Friendly is called Thomas Jefferson Middle School which is connected to the Westmoreland Community Park.

As we were passing by the school we noticed a Frisbee game underway and stopped to take pictures of some of the people who make up the community. Aside from Willamette, 18^th Street and Chambers, Friendly Neighborhood was a fairly quiet residential area. There were very few apartment complexes (mostly near Willamette) and not much new development in the way of houses. An empty lot full of weeds and graffiti showed the stark contrast between places such as campus or downtown Eugene where developers quickly snatch up properties.

Of course amid the grays and cream colored houses, we found the normal flavor of Eugene when we were exploring too. Houses with strange lawn decorations and décor, a boat on top of a roof and intricate fences were abundant.

This Saturday, our group went out to the Friendly area of Eugene, which encompasses 18th through 30th Ave. and High through Chambers St. It appeared Willamette was the liveliest area of the neighborhood, the street lined with bookstores, bakeries, restaurants, and other local businesses. One of these businesses was the South Eugene branch of 13th Avenue’s Glenwood Restaurant. There were also bigger chain restaurants such as McDonald’s located on the street.

College Hill was a quieter, mostly residential area consisting mainly of small houses. It seemed to be a generally middle class area although there were a couple of bigger houses, and towards the edge of the neighborhood there was a school with some kids on the playground. There were a couple of parks in the area, one dedicated to the primary purpose of Frisbee golf.

There weren’t many people wandering around the residential neighborhoods, but I did encounter a couple of good-natured young kids walking home from school who actually agreed to let me, the crazy girl with a camera, take their picture.

Near Friendly St. stood the Friendly Street Church of God, which was relatively quiet on that somewhat dreary afternoon.

The surrounding streets were made up of homes, the architecture of which varied from classic to curious. One seemed to be somewhat precariously held up by posts, while another mimics the feel of a Berkeley bungalow.

Another house had a VW Bug parked on the front lawn, which is representative of the character of this neighborhood and the people living in it.

Overall, the Friendly neighborhood seems diverse and dynamic. I’m looking forward to learning more about it!

Over the weekend, my group and I set out to see the sites and people of Friendly neighborhood in Eugene. The neighborhood is located between 18^th and 30^th avenue and Willamette St. and Chambers St. We found that the neighborhood was rather diverse. Willamette St. and Chambers St. served as the commercial distract. Restaurants, local shops, and chain stores lined both streets. Willamette St. was a constant buzz with traffic and stand buyers.  Some of the local restaurants located on the street were The Glenwood Restaurant and Turtles Bar and Grill. There was a line of people patiently waiting outside of The Glenwood to be seated for their delicious breakfast.

A few streets over from Willamette St. is a smaller neighborhood referred to as College Hill. It was very peaceful, quite, and there was little movement happening around the houses. The homes were small, but had character and charm. Each one was different from the other, and it was obvious that many of the homeowners took pride in how their home looked.

Farther down the hill and around actual Friendly St., the homes definitely still had character. There was one house that suspended an old canoe or rowboat from the house for protection on their deck. Another house had a spectacular fence surrounding their front yard. It was made out of some wood that is able to bend and twist to form into some interesting figures. This part of the neighborhood was similar to College Hill. It was quite with the occasional hum of a car engine starting up or a bicycle rider gliding by us.

The Friendly Street Church of God sat in the neighborhood, along with the Westmoreland Community Park. Near the park there was a middle school bustling with parents and kids arriving and leaving from Kidsports games. There were also some young adults playing a game of ultimate Frisbee near the school

Ok.  I definitely killed off a fair share of brain cells this past weekend by watching a ton of pointless TV.  Did anyone else watch the College Hill: South Beach marathon on BET?

No?  Well, that’s expected since the majority of you actually have things to do with your lives.  Unfortunately, YAKWII does nothing.  Absolutely nothing.  Yeah…I’m awesome.

But getting back to what I was talking about…yes, I did watch most of the College Hill marathon.  That sh*t was funny as hell to me!  My college experience wasn’t as nearly as entertaining, so it was interesting to see these kids who are (supposedly) making it through school without even thinking about touching a text book.  All the chicks on there were cute too.  I like that little sexy ass, barbie-like chick Milan.

She didn’t do sh*t but sit there and look cute all day.  Hey Ms. Milan, if you want to kick it with a dude who has zero expectations for you to do sh*t but just sit there and look cute all the time, you need to holla at YAKWII!  I’m that dude.  I don’t give a f*ck.  Shorty can come thru the crib anytime!  I be here all day, every day!  Drinkin beer.

But on the real, if any of ya’ll personally know shorty or knows someone who knows shorty…put me on!

Also this weekend, I watched Fight Club twice on Spike TV.

Great f*ckin movie!  After getting all amped up from watching the movie, I started my own fight club.  However, it really didn’t go too well since I was the only person there to participate in my fight club.  And since I had no one to fight, I’m now definitely breaking the 1st and 2nd rule of my fight club, which like the movie, is to not talk about my fight club.  However, since no one but me knew about my fight club, I had no choice but to talk about my fight club.  However, even after talking about my fight club, no one is interested in joining my fight club.   That makes me sad.  Honestly, I don’t want even want to participate in my fight club anymore.  Moving on…

Of course I got my fix of Cheaters this weekend too!  Love this show!

This is the only show that is even more trashier than Maury, Jerry Springer, old episodes of Richard Bey and Cops – combined!  Even though he is quite possibly the most dull person in life, I think Joey Greco is the MAN!!

Imagine showing up at the bar with Joey as your wing man??  You definitely gettin buns that night! Chicks will flock just to take a pic with Joey.  So you just fall back and holla.  Next thing you know, you and Joe are riding the London Bridge.

I’m already bracing myself for the hate mail, but punks jump up to get beat down, so type away. 

To be honest, I didn’t watch all of the seasons of College Hill and never took an interest until the Virgin Islands episode where homegirl from the V.I. got beat with a espadrille (!) in her own hood by the hungry-looking girl from LA (that’s west coast for you).  the latest season, filmed in the all-too-conducive-to-higher-learning South Beach, has me in love with this show, purely for its ridiculousness and coming to the grim realization that if I was still at Howard back-slidin’, I would have known someone just like every one of these people. 

Quite simply: Black folks that don’t know each other can’t live together anywhere aside from a dorm, and especially not seven-deep when no one has rent to worry about.  I thought it was just n***alicious that an entire episode of the show was basically The Mystery of the Stolen Ribs.    I was glued to the screen.  As much as people would like to front, you woulda jumped in somebody’s a** too for the same offense…I was hungry the whole time I was watching it.  You gotta at least give them credit for including some kind of positivity, though, since college is about mastering the work-life balance.  The cast visited a museum in Key West showcasing the findings of a crashed slave ship and also gave up a trip out of the country in favor of helping a single mother of two to get back on her feet, providing her with a new fully-furnished apartment.  All this was interspersed with fights (somebody even got mushed, which I loved, and let it slide), flirting, girl-on-girl attraction, and the ongoing antics of Kyle, the most effeminate Black male on TV today (can’t ever really touch the brotha from Revenge of the Nerds or dude from Mannequin) next to Miss Jay from America’s Next Top Model.

Some would like to claim that their Black college experience was 100% enlightenment and positivity like Cornel West was your freshman roommate or some sh*t, but here at The Shaka Shaw Show, we keep it 100% greazy, as I have stated before, so f**k that.  My HBCU experience was roughly 80% ignorance.  Besides that, there was about 10% enlightenment and the other 15% (thanks for the math skills, Dr. Goodlet…took this man’s class twice and had to withdraw both times because I don’t speak or understand patois) was spent in the A building trying to get registered and validated.  Be for real.  You mean to tell me you never got stupid drunk at a club or party during college?  Really?  You never had a beat-a-n***a-with-a-shoe moment?  Either you didn’t attend an HBCU or I didn’t know your lame a**.  Everybody knows college is a time for youthful exuberance and outright debauchery.  The social aspect (making and learning from one’s mistakes) is all part of the college experience and it’s ridiculous for people to expect that just because the show has Black students on it, it should be held to an unrealistic standard just for the purpose of makin’ us look good to Brad & Chad.  A slave mentality if I ever heard of one.  How about we stop worrying about what “others” think about us on TV and just look at it for what it is: Black ENTERTAINMENT Television.  You want news?  There’s always CNN.  You want to watch Eyes on the Prize on a continuous loop?  I’m sure your local PBS affiliate can accomodate you.
