Okay, Lately, I hadn’t blogged or done any Youtube videos. That can be two things, one, I am very busy with college and my college classes at Southern Connecticut State University keep me very busy and very active. The other is that my girlfriend Alexis, keeps me very busy and very deep into her. So I’ve been so busy, I hadn’t had any time for myself as well. The only time I ever have for myself is when I am at home in my own room and in my own queen size bed.

So all and all, Things are going fine with college. I know I’ve been studying hard and trying to pass at least four out of five classes. The hardest class I have to face is my Human biology class. The only class I have an iffy of passing is my Elementary Algebra class. The last test I took knock down what ever chance I have to pass the class, but I am hoping that I can pass the final exam and put me into the passing range. Other than that, I know I am going to be here year round and that includes summer school as well.

The other is that since I have a girlfriend and Alexis keeps me so deep into her with her infectious smile and laugh. Me and Alexis have been together since October. The only thing I am going to say is that were both into each other and very deep into each other personally and romantically. We see each other on campus alot and she lives off campus and I live on campus. Which is kinda cool, and on campus everyone sees me and Alexis as a dating couple and a relationships.

So anyway, I’ve been super busy on campus and with my girlfriend and because of that, I hadn’t blogged in while and I really gotta get back to blogging at least when I get a chance. So Now I have to get back and study for my final exams now, see ya later

Bioinformatics is a computer intensive field, so it is quite natural to find that experts in this discipline tend to post a lot of useful information on the web. In fact most professors teaching bioinformatics courses, book authors, and creators of important algorithms have extensive web sites filled with tutorials and educational information. The challenge is to locate the resources that you need for your personal education without spending months of your time surfing the web searching for these gems.

There is a clear need for an organized central resource that collects links to bioinformatics training material. The EXOME™ Horizon (EH) is an attempt to fill this need.

EXOME™ Horizon, an enabling service for Bioinformatics is a “Unified bioinformatics Learning Environment” that integrates the tools to learn, appreciate, explore and teach Bioinformatics in an optimal way. It facilitates the understanding of Bioinformatics among researchers and students.

The EXOME™ Horizon is an organized collection of Sequence Analysis tools, Structural Bioinformatics tools & Drug discovery tools, Comprehensive tutorials, In-built databases, On-line references, Sample test datasets, etc. In short everything that interested scientists/student’s need in order to train themselves in the emerging discipline of bioinformatics

EXOME™ Horizon is a service offering that consists of Sequence Analysis, structural bioinformatics and Drug Designing modules. EXOME™ Horizon uses workflow model through which a user can effectively and efficiently comprehend the procedural steps of sequence analysis, structure analysis and drug designing.

Listed below are just some of the areas in which training is conducted using EXOME™ Horizon:

Genomics -Sequence/Structure Annotation, Phylogenetic Analysis, SNP Analysis, Genomics/Comparative

Proteomics – Structural Bioinformatics, Protein Modeling and Simulations

Cheminformatics -Pharmacophore/QSAR Modeling, Combinatorial Library design, Molecular Docking, Structure Based Drug Designing, Toxicity Modeling and Prediction, Chemical Databases

Some of the salient features of EXOME™ Horizon other than the one mentioned above are as follows:

Client server architecture minimizes the cost per user.

Minimizes the hard ware requirement to a Server

User specific & secure work space

Comprehensive help menus for self learning

Limiting the use of internet bandwidth with inbuilt data bases- Nucleotide, PDB, PDBQ etc.

Interactive GUI removes the pain to learn and write commands to run an application.

Easy to understand the results/output through graphical representation and saves valuable time in understanding the application specific output

Nearly two years passed from the announcement that UConn would play Notre Dame until this past Saturday. During this time the conversation over these teams focused on sports business issues. Why wouldn’t Notre Dame play UConn at Rentschler Field? If UConn played Notre Dame at Giants’ Stadium, how would the gate be split? If UConn played Notre Dame at Gillette Stadium how would the State feel about lining Robert Kraft’s pockets, after he committed to move the Patriots to Hartford and later reneged? What gave Notre Dame the right to insist upon such special treatment?

On Saturday, none of those business issues mattered. UConn fans were spotted all over Notre Dame’s campus. Huskies fans were walking around the quad. Shopping at the enormous Notre Dame bookstore. Praying at the Basilica and the Grotto. Taking pictures of Touchdown Jesus. Tailgating in the parking lots. And Notre Dame fans and staff treated UConn fans with hospitality that defies explanation. We were no exception.

While waiting in line for former Notre Dame QB Tony Rice’s autograph, a Notre Dame staff member approached us to make sure we were enjoying our visit. When we disrupted the line by asking for a picture with Rice, the security guard didn’t only allow us to stop the procession – he took the picture for us – but not before asking former Irish running back Allen Pinkett to jump into the shot.

Sitting square in the middle of Irish country at the game, the Notre Dame fans couldn’t have been more courteous (although their displeasure with the state of Notre Dame football was overwhelmingly clear). After Dixon had not one, but two, fourth quarter scores called back for holding, a couple of fans apologetically explained that should the Irish win, it could only be because of good luck. After Dixon’s game-winning touchdown, the fans in our section stated that UConn deserved to win and wished us well. We didn’t hear a single fan use profanity during what was a frustrating game for the Irish faithful.

On more than one occasion, I’ve noted that the allure of playing Notre Dame is unbeatable mystique but a beatable football team. UConn proved the latter to be true. As to mystique, where else do the stadium ushers approach you and ask if they can take your picture, and even direct you so that the best angle of the stadium is captured? Where else can you meet a national championship winning QB, view seven Heisman trophies and then say a prayer at the Grotto or Basilica? Where else can attending a football game be such a fulfilling experience? Only at Notre Dame.

Notre Dame has more than mystique. Notre Dame and its fans have a genuine appreciation of the game of football and that appreciation extends to the treatment of the fans of the opposing team. That much was evident on Saturday. UConn fans not only witnessed the arrival of UConn’s Division I football program but did so with a historic and unparalleled backdrop.

Following the game, we stopped for a burger and beer at the legendary CJ’s Pub in South Bend. I emailed a colleague who was at the game, and asked if he was enjoying himself. His response: “Like no other!” He could have been talking about the game or the experience. Both were unforgettable.

But this game – unquestionably the most important victory of UConn’s Division I program – was not only for Jazz. It was for every UConn player. The Huskies lost a teammate, a brother and a friend in Howard. Their efforts to honor Howard on the football field fell just short in three consecutive, agonizing losses. At Notre Dame, however, there was triumph. There was relief. There were tears of joy. All on a campus at which football and religion are intertwined and sometimes indistinguishable from each other.

Following the game, Huskies fans congregated outside of the gates of the House that Rockne Built, waiting for the UConn players and coaches to emerge. Fans blended with family and friends of UConn players in a joyous scene. Autographs were signed, pictures were snapped, and hugs were exchanged.

In the backdrop of UConn’s post-game congregation, the Hesburgh Library bearing the depiction of Touchdown Jesus was lit against the night’s sky. Perhaps that reminded them of their teammate to whom they dedicated this win.

=============================================================

Dear Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center:

I understand that after two decades, Tech University Health Science Center
(TTUHSC) has not purchased cats for research from Odessa, Texas Animal
Control this year. I hope TTUHSC has joined over 90% of U.S. and Canadian
facilities that use simulated models for medical training courses.

I am surprised that TTUHSC relies upon old-fashioned animal experiments in
the first place. Please permanently replace animal labs with synthetic
models like simulators and manikins.

Though human-focused tools yield data more relevant to people, TTUHSC
courses have featured a drill in which students drive plastic tubes down
cats’ windpipes, causing them to bleed or swell. Constant intubation can
scar throat tissue and lead to collapsed lungs or death.

Cats have also undergone a procedure that pumps air into their chest
cavities. Trainees try to extract the surplus air via an inserted needle.

Animal-free learning methods cut overhead to confine, feed and destroy cats.
A timely New England Journal of Medicine article highlights the “very
detailed feedback and…more subtle measurement of trainee performance”
gained from virtual reality simulators. The article concludes: Inanimate
models are “safe, reproducible, readily available, and cost-effective.”

Moreover, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Heart
Association — the agencies that sponsor most pediatric life-support courses
nationwide — don’t promote animal use. They advocate synthetic models that
give students an accurate depiction of human, not feline, anatomy.

Please let me know if TTUHSC has, in fact, replaced live cat use in medical
training with superior and humane non-animal technologies.

Thank you,

There are any number of reasons why these are small graduating classes. The most likely is that the listed schools have only recently inaugurated their Biomedical Engineering programs. A number of schools took advantage of the Biomedical Engineering program grants by the now defunct Whitaker Foundation before it ceased to exist in 2005. The foundation supported the creation of at least 30 programs. Personally I don’t believe that a small graduating class has anything to do with the quality of a program. It would be wise for prospective students and their parents to ask about plans for accreditation at these schools.

I have no sympathies for those Students and Faculty at the University of California system who protested about a 32% hike in tuition. If they don’t like how much they are paying to go to college. They should have simply packed up and move elsewhere to get their education. Their are other states out their with far better college education at a lower cost than the University of California system. They whine and complain like little kids when they have to pay more to get their college education. That’s why California is going down the drain faster than any other state and they can thank their Prop 13 which doesn’t allow them to raise taxes. As a result, they are forced to cut services and programs in the state of California.

Just look at my University, I’m an in state student at Southern Connecticut State University and I only pay at least $20,000 a year to go to Southern Connecticut State University. The people at the University of California system whine and put up a temper tantrum like little babies complaining about paying too much. That’s why those people need a lesson in Reality and the reality is that if the State is short on money, they are gona have to raise taxes somehow to pay for all the things they want to have. They need to know that nothing is ever free or handed to you. They need to learn that the price of education is going to go up one way or the other. So they need to learn to suck it up and deal with the hike in college tuition.

Heck, if they want my advice. Two things they can do, one transfer to a community college and do the first two years their and then transfer to a 4 yr university. The other is if they can afford it, they can pack up and move to another state where they can afford the college education and pay at a lower cost. They need to stop whining and complaining like little kids. Heck over here they raise tuition and you don’t see college kids in New England complaining because we learn to deal with it and suck it up and deal with it.

It’s been long road to South Bend for the UConn football program. Twenty months ago I wrote my first article about the possibility of a football series between UConn and Notre Dame, UCONN-Notre Dame: How Far Should UConn Go to Play in the House that Rockne Built?. At that time, details of the contract negotiations between the universities became public and were subject to considerable debate. Especially the fact that Notre Dame sought a deal under which UConn would play its home games at Giants Stadium or Gillette Stadium, but not Rentschler Field. Members of the Connecticut General Assembly even attempted to pass legislation prohibiting UConn from playing home games away from The Rent.

What ultimately followed was a 1-game contract for a game at South Bend this coming Saturday. All bets are off for a long-term deal. Perhaps due to the fact that Saturday’s game might be UConn’s only trip to South Bend, there has been some terrific coverage of UConn-Notre Dame. Here are some of my favorites:

Jeff Jacobs of the Hartford Courant wrote a great article on UConn QB Zach Frazer’s return to Notre Dame in Frazer Needs To Stay A Kid At Heart At ND. If you read one article, read this one.

Desmond Conner of the Hartford Courant posed a question on his blog: What Does UConn-Notre Dame Football Mean to You. Check out the comments.

Although this article by ESPN.com’s Kieran Darcy is a few years old, it truly captures the experience of attending a Notre Dame football game: When Irish eyes are smiling

Sox & Dawgs has gathered some of the best links in its 11/18 and 11/19 “Paw Prints” posts.

Just when we think we have seen everything, the New York Times (NYT) surprises us with new and outrageous effrontery to suggest that the NYT be on a student required reading list. And, they intend to reward any professor with his or her (the professor’s) very own subscription for playing along with their circulation scheme.

Perhaps the NYT should promote for circulation through a fiction writing course. That, or stop their habit of slanting the news to support their views. It sometimes seems that every story in their newspaper is an editorial. It appears that the folks at NYT believe that wrong ideas eventually become so numerous that they conceal the right ideas.

Here’s the take from TIMESWATCH. Who else? At least one professor takes exception to the suggestion that he could be a toady for a rag.

The past two nights have brought two fresh events to the Connecticut sports scene. On one end of the spectrum, professional football visited Hartford in the form of the United Football League (UFL). At the opposite end, six college basketball teams kicked off a showcase of Division I teams not named UConn.

Inspired by the fifty-five year old “Philadelphia Big 5″, the similarly named Connecticut 6 is designed to shine a light upon the State’s mid-majors. But that’s not the sole objective of the Connecticut 6. A few weeks ago, when asked about the event, Yale coach James Jones spoke of the bond between the Philadelphia schools and their respective coaches. “They’re thick as thieves” said Jones. One could imply that the Connecticut 6 schools hope that, over time, a similar bond can develop.

But tonight, the focus was on the present. The focus was on Yale vs. Sacred Heart; Fairfield vs. Central Connecticut; and Quinnipiac vs. Hartford. The focus was whether the Connecticut 6 could drum up interest in the state’s mid-majors. Was it successful?

Much like Thursday’s UFL game, it is far too early to judge. Attendance appeared between 25-40 percent capacity of the 10,000-seat Arena at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport, thinning out before the final game of the triple-header. The games were competitive and spirited; Sacred Heart outlasted Yale, 92 to 86; Fairfield beat Central Connecticut 67 to 58; and Quinnipiac pulled way from Hartford for a 85-74 victory.

Also similar to the UFL, there is some room for improvement. Marketing efforts were sparse. It seemed that there was little mention of the Connecticut 6 from its announcement in May, to the recent launch of the Connecticut 6 website. Some fans mentioned being unable to locate the official website, and had trouble finding the actual start times for the games.

Scheduling conflicts also posed problems. As the Courant’s Jeff Jacobs noted before the event:

The Huskies open tonight against William & Mary and even if the Tribe only bring along Mary, there’s little doubt the primary attention will be on Gampel Pavilion. Forget UConn or anything on TV. There’s also No. 3 Cornell at No. 12 Yale in hockey, Harvard at No. 20 Quinnipiac in hockey and all sorts of high school football for competition at the gate. Affecting the Fairfield student crowd, there’s a 4 p.m. Stags MAAC semifinal soccer game, too. (Click here to read Jacobs’ entire article on the Connecticut 6).

Although not perfect, the Connecticut 6 has potential. The event moves to Mohegan Sun for the next two years, which should attract additional interest. With a year’s head start, hopefully the Connecticut 6 schools put forth a greater marketing effort for next year. Nevertheless, the Connecticut 6 is a welcome addition to the Connecticut sports scene. If the event can recreate a fraction of the success of the Philadelphia Big 5, the schools of the Connecticut 6 will have achieved something.

Why are there so many Mormons in Indiana?
The day started like many others in the month of November in New England, brisk, cool, not yet full on winter, but with the icy touch of december in the air, like a forewarning of the cold to come. I like many others were poor, educated but had no job to speak of, not since the war that is. The reformation, as many were calling it, was a dark time to be living in North America, very uncertain times. Most people felt like an item up for auction who would be sold to the highest bidder and then forced to adopt their lifestyle. Most, the unbelievables , as we called them, accepted this with a worried face and a weary mind but still trudged towards, what they thought, was inevitability. Not us, not the rebels. We were a group devoted to claiming land for their own and starting anew, the biggest problem was foreign forces who were also trying to claim the very same land for the sole purpose of expanding their empires, and was their way of “sticking” it to the country that they claimed, oppressed the world. The mission was simple, take back what was left of what used to be the northeastern U.S. Most of us had fled the cities and moved into more isolated locations in the New England woods. Mostly in what was once New Hampshire and Maine. The onsets of fall was rapidly turning into winter and the majority of us hadn’t yet acquired the necessary provisions to survive a harsh New England winter. Nevertheless our determination would be our source of warmth, for a while at least. When the USA initially began to fall apart the American people thought it would be best to withdraw any troops currently occupying foreign lands and bring them home to protect the extremely corrupt politicians who were the very ones who were bringing the once great nation down. That would have been easy if, the military didn’t turn on them. You see, that was a time of unbridled patriotism among most Americans who felt that what the founding fathers have done should be preserved and a return to Democracy, the way it used to be during the early times of the nation, should be taking place. Most, if not all, of the military felt that way and had simply turned their weapons on the politicians. Not a shot was fired though, until the politicians own elite guardsmen, the secret service, found this act of what they called treason, inexcusable. Since then everything has become all hearsay. Most of the TV networks were seized and ran all government propaganda, to embrace their ideals, to listen to what they had to say, and if not, be tried and executed for treason. radio stations were shut down, and all we had was ourselves and our beliefs, until… Until foreign powers began to invade the weakened country and began to claim land as their own. With no discernible military, most places across the country fell under foreign control. Some places fell faster than others, some places were still yet to fall. The scattered remains of the military dug in at certain locations, but most infantrymen went their own way, and simply fought with their local townsman to fight for their homes and states and protect what they believed was rightly theirs. I was one of those people. This particular part of the continent, the northeast, was occupied by the EU, European Union, mostly comprised of British and Canadian troops, so it seemed only fitting for us to call it the New American Revolution. Other parts of the nation called it something different, something more specifically tailored to their region, but in the end we were all fighting for independence once again. It was clear, that America as we knew it would never be the same. A large group of suburbanites gave into the occupying powers without a fight, these were the unbelievables, and were now considered British citizens, thus enemy civilians to us. I, and many other local people including my brother and a few of my hometown buddies were now holed up in a fortified bunker somewhere in New Hampshire. The weapons we acquired were mostly from dead Canadian troops and some were brought to us by military sympathizers to our cause, and others were merely sold to us from entrepreneurs looking to capitalize off of our conflict. Our location was yet to be discovered by the enemy but it was only a matter of time. Ammunition was low, but our skills were high, and compensated for the lack of the latter.

How’s this for the beginning of a story?
Currently I am a high school senior, I hate living in the South (lived here for 5 years) and I plan on going BACK up North. Living in a Republican run state has actually made me committed to 1. Compensating for this madness by living in a blue state (basically in the Northeast) for 15-20 years and then living in a Blue state for another 30 years of my life 2. Never voting Republican at all. I have seen tons of racism (out loud one too), poverty (everywhere), and tons of bigotry in this red state I live in. There is no diversity and MAN do I have to look real hard to find a good looking Latina or Asian chick BECAUSE HEY I am one of the few Asians in the state I live in. I hate the living in the state I live in so much that I am willing to never vote for the party that runs this state (republicans). Is that a good idea?

Is it good to vote against a party because you lived in a state run by that party?
Recently, I’ve been toying with the idea of moving up to Pennsylvania with my aunt, with parental permission, of course. I have a feeling it would cost less, and it would be easier to get accepted, and on a more personal reason, my aunt lives alone, and I would be there to take care of her. Opinions please? I actually really want to move there, but I know my parents will say no without good reasoning.

I want to go to an out of state college in the Northeast; but I live in South Florida?
Where can I find a responsible AKC breeder in the northeast who will sell me a boxer puppy without its tail docked. My wife refuses to get a dog without its full tail. Popular in Europe, but unable to find in the states.

Where can I find a responsible AKC boxer breeder in the northeast?
what species of plants would work as a local anesthetics in North America, preferably in eastern Canada and the northeast United States.

anesthetic wild plants north america?
- Your vice Presidential Candidate insinuated that people from the Northeast were anti-American. – Your most vocal pundit has declared that we should cut Maine from the United States. – Two candidates for governor of Texas support secession from the Union. And, the current governor has openly stated that it is close to doing it. – Now, in a state where you have 3 of the 29 congressman, many party leaders are supporting the Conservative Party candidate, instead of the Republican. – Now, rank and file members are calling the President of the United States a traitor. What is the point of this strategy? How do you plan to garner votes in states that you don’t think are American?I “dug up” these facts by reading Newspapers. Here are some examples of those stories: Palin, pro America http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2008/10/17/palin-touts-the-pro-america-areas-of-the-country/ Limbaugh, “saw off Maine” – http://www.pittnews.com/article/2009/10/19/green-snowe-queen Texas secession – http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/news/politics/topstories/stories/101409dntexsecession.3f3cb13.html New York 23rd – http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/washington/2009/10/family-feud-pits-convervatives-against-republicans-in-ny23-could-infighting-help-democrats.html “filling the White House with Maoists” – is the type of statements I’m talking about.

Can a conservative please explain Republican strategy?
My brother is getting stationed in Okinawa, Japan. Just wondering if I, being on the Northeast coast of the States, could I play PS3 online with him? Or are the servers separated into countries?Alright sounds like you can, cool! Thanks for the answers!

PS3 Online in Japan question?
1)south and northeast 2)west and northeast 3)midwest and northwest 4)west and northwest 5)south and midwest

On November 19th & 20th, students and youth all over the country will be taking action and calling President Obama to remind him that It’s Game Time and we need his leadership on climate and energy policy. We’re asking him to meet with young leaders, give a national address outlining his strategy and to attend Copenhagen in person.

President Obama is listening: He said he would attend the critical Copenhagen climate negotiations IF it is deemed necessary to clinch a deal. We know it’s necessary, so we’ve got to let him know it’s game time! Will you host a Call-in Day Event?

We can get this message across to Obama by getting our voices into the White House. When lots of young voters call in with a consistent demand, it doesn’t go unnoticed. We can make sure this happens by hosting Call-in Day events across the country.

Can you help make sure this critical message reaches Obama in the White House? Call-in Days are fun and simple. All you need is a couple of hours, a public location, and a small group of volunteers. See our Call-in Day Event Guide here.

I’m a huge supporter of college students keeping their Twitter accounts open to the public. One of the best parts of the site is the random and exciting exchange of information across the vast Twittersphere. When a person puts his account on private (to shield his or her tweets from the scrutiny of potential employers), that person is also limited to conversing within the comfortable boundaries of his or her followers list. I think that by being smart about what is posted, any college student can maintain an employment-friendly Twitter account that is open to the public.

The idea for the post Four Things To Avoid Tweeting About by Dan Klamm came because he got sick of hearing people talk about “damaging your reputation” by “posting bad content” on social networking sites. What exactly constitutes bad content? Dan decided to break it down into a few concrete categories of tweets that can hurt your chances of employment.

Top 20 schools which offer B.S. Biomedical Engineering degrees by graduating class size. These schools represent 1650 graduates. They represent about half the total number of B.S. BME graduates for 2008. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects approximately 300 new Biomedical Engineering jobs every year between 2006 and 2016. As can be seen there is a significant mismatch between the actual number of graduates and the projected number of jobs. Anyone interested in these programs should note that the size of a department does not necessarily indicate a high level of quality when it comes to preparing a student for a corporate career.

Applying to college isn’t usually something extremely difficult. I mean it is on some level, but it doesn’t really require much other than proof of grades, a transcript release, a recommendation or two, and an essay. I wish the same could be said about my experience. I have yet to apply to my colleges, which are all CUNYs, because CUNY has decided to allow fall admission applications starting Decemeber 1st. Alright fine, it gives me time to get organized. But here lies the problem: The transcript release form, the form that allows my school to send a copy of my transcript to the colleges I’m applying to, is due by November 12th. What the fuck CUNY?

To get a swish rather than a brick, you need the best possible conditions for releasing the basketball from your hand, say Drs. Chau Tran and Larry Silverberg, mechanical and aerospace engineers at NC State and co-authors of a peer-reviewed study.

The engineers used hundreds of thousands of three-dimensional computer simulations of basketball free-throw trajectories to arrive at their conclusions. After running the simulations, Tran and Silverberg arrived at a number of major recommendations to improve free-throw shooting.

First, the engineers say that shooters should launch the shot with about three hertz of back spin. That translates to the ball making three complete backspinning revolutions before reaching the hoop. Back spin deadens the ball when it bounces off the rim or backboard, the engineers assert, giving the ball a better chance of settling through the net.

Where to aim? Tran and Silverberg say you should aim for the back of the rim, leaving close to 5 centimeters — about 2 inches — between the ball and the back of the rim. According to the simulations, aiming for the center of the basket decreases the probabilities of a successful shot by almost 3 percent.

The engineers say that the ball should be launched at 52 degrees to the horizontal. If you don’t have a protractor in your jersey, that means that the shot should, at the highest point in its arc to the basket, be less than 2 inches below the top of the backboard.

Free-throw shooters should also release the ball as high above the ground as possible, without adversely affecting the consistency of the shot; release the ball so it follows the imaginary line joining the player and the basket; and release the ball with a smooth body motion to get a consistent release speed.
