spring is back, back again! Chanel; It’s so difficult to explain my love/hate relationship wit

spring is back, back again!

Chanel;

It’s so difficult to explain my love/hate relationship with the house of Chanel. I mean, there’s no denying it: mad props for the likes of Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel, who singlehandedly created a legacy for herself based on her self-taught designs and absolute drive for perfection. (My god, her designs were beautiful and classy.) And ever since then, her staple tweed jackets and suits have been twisted and turned for a variety of outfits, looks, and fashions. Chanel, as beautiful and wonderful and glamorous as y’are darlin’, sometimes I just have to wonder what the heck was Karl Lagerfeld thinking? I try to go into reviews as unbiased as I can, but with a name like Chanel, the standards are high and it’s rather easy to fall short sometimes. For this Spring collection, I get the vibe that Lagerfeld was channeling the 60’s. Don’t get me wrong, some outfits I absolutely adore and would die for; but some, well some are just… not working to me. (Note: the backdrop that the farmhouse setting gives is just marvelous. So much so, that some of the designs are rather drowned out, as opposed to emphasized like I think they meant it to be.) Below are a few favorites and few not-favorites. What do you beautifuls think?

oui above, non below

<img class="alignnone" title="Iris Strubegger for Chanel.

Collette Dinnigan;

Starting off dark, then becoming light before closing with dark, Collete Dinnigan’s Spring collection is a thing to behold! It gives one a sense of optimism, the feeling that dark times will always pass. Not only are the sheer fabrics free and flowing, the outfits look rather comfortable. I think I need to find myself a pair of those sheer black tights. The only no-no? The clearly visible boobies under the sheer fabrics; the effect is rather crude and detracts from the overall design.

<img class="alignnone" title="Jaine Schuh for Collette Dinnigan.

So to end this rather lengthy blog (I apologize profusely) on Karl Lagerfeld and Collette Dinnigan, I tip my hat off to you my good people, for a noticeable Spring 2010 collection!

Pattern blurb

Pattern: Boat Neck Sweater

Designer: Debbie Bliss

Sourced from: Baby Knits for Beginners

Knitted for?: Shona

Wool used: Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Aran in 300015

Purchased from: Cucumber Patch

Any problems with the pattern?: Not really, but I think the neck is too big.

Any modifications made?: Added 4 rows of treble crochet to bottom so it was nice and long to keep her cosy.

Washing and wearing: Do not let her eat her tea in this! 30 degrees is not really baby friendly.

Knit again?: Yes, but in different more easily washable yarn.

Next time, any changes to be made?: Smaller neck size.

Skills learned?: First ever jersey made so whole process was new.

General comments: Really cosy jersey for winter.

Today we headed to the ritziest part of town. I put my best, Chanel shod foot forward onto Rue Faub

Today we headed to the ritziest part of town. I put my best, Chanel shod foot forward onto Rue Fauburg St Honore – the fanciest shopping street in Paris.

In today’s day and age, actually, globalization took some fun out of shopping. No matter where you go, the shops are mostly the same. There are some gems, however, like the famous Collette, an institution more than a shop. The clothes here are presented on mannequins rather than the racks. Almost no racks are to be found – just the artfully outfitted mannequins. The featured designers that attracted my attention were Comme des Garcons, ever avant-garde, and very cool outfits by YSL , which warrants a trip to Woodbury Commons.

Another highlight was a visit to a miniature mall featuring meticulously restored antiques from the Louis XIX period through Art Nouveau and Art Deco – my personal favorites. This place was like a museum of decorative arts, only everything was for sale. That made it more exciting than a museum – the fact that all those treasures could be had if you had enough money.

Well, the antiques were out of our price range, so we walked to Fouchon where I bought and consumed a piece of art of a cake whose taste matched its looks. It consisted of a caramel and meringue heart surrounded by a perfect semi-globe of chocolate sprinkled with some gold powder for the full measure.

From there we walked to Le Marais for another falafel and, I couldn’t resist, some Middle Eastern type of sugar-covered zeppole that called my name out of another amazing pastry shop painted with frescoes.

But enough said of the gluttonous delights. My soul needed some nourishment too. That was provided by a visit to the Opera Bastille for the performance of L; Elixir d’Amour with the glorious Anna Netrebko in title role. Her tenor-counterpart, however, was not on par. He screwed up Una Furtima Lacrima, not hitting any of the high C’s and even, to my ear, taking a wrong note. But everyone else was wonderful, the production was very nice, rivaling that at the Met in the inclusion of moving vehicles and one live dog. The opera house is modern, minimalist, even austere, but pleasantly unobtrusive, and the acoustics was superb. Even in our nosebleed section, third row from the back, the sound was perfect and the view unobstructed.

Another great day in this great city.

Ok, first off… I would like someone to impale me with a broomstick. These are special. It’s kinda safe to say everybody remembers Reebok Pumps from back in the day, let alone all the recent re-releaseses. But what better opportunity than this to get nostalgic over some other short lived sneaks that are really only remembered by few….

The Regulator: The inflatable shoe craze of the early 1990s spawned this shoe, L.A. Gear’s answer to the Reebok Pump. The shoe featured a large pumping button on the tongue (much larger than the Reebok Pump’s was) and a switch on top that deflated the shoe when pushed to the right.

There is probably only a handful of people who can recall these. The pump on these shizens were like twice the size. But if you really want to go overboard….

Annet Malherbe (links) en Eva van Wijdeven in De Laatste Dagen van Emma Blank

De Laatste Dagen van Emma Blank

Regie: Alex van Warmerdam (De Noorderlingen, Ober)

Met: Eva van Wijdeven, Gene Bervoets, Annet Malherbe, Marlies Heuer, Alex van Warmerdam, Gijs Naber

Genre: Zwarte komedie

Vergelijkbaar: Adams Aebler (2005), Ober (2006)

Emma Blank is in de war. Ze is een sadist. Emma Blank is harteloos.

Gelukkig gaat Emma Blank binnenkort dood.

Hebberigheid

Beoordeling: ***

Sunshine Cleaning

Regie: Christine Jeffs (Sylvia)

Met: Amy Adams, Emily Blunt, Alan Arkin, Clifton Collins Jr, Steve Zahn

Genre: Tragikomedie

Vergelijkbaar: In Her Shoes (2005), Little Miss Sunshine (2006)

Typisch feelgood.

Beoordeling: ***

Kan Door Huid Heen

Regie: Esther Rots

Met: Rifka Lodeizen, Wim Opbrouck

Genre: Drama

Vergelijkbaar: Dancer in the Dark (2000), Secret Sunshine (2008)

Beoordeling: ****

Towelhead

Regie: Alan Ball (Six Feet Under, True Blood)

Met: Summer Bishil, Peter Macdissi, Toni Collette, Aaron Eckhart, Maria Bello

Genre: Coming-of-age

Vergelijkbaar: American Beauy (1999), Juno (2007)

Irving Penn Dies at 92: Pioneer of Modern Fashion, Portrait and Still-Life Photography

Irving Penn, a renowned master of American fashion photography whose more simple aesthetic, combined with an often startling erotic sensuality, defined a visual style that he applied to such varied subjects as fashion design, celebrity portraits and everyday objects, many of them now-famous photographs owned by leading art museums, has died at the age of 92. In 1943, Penn started contributing to Vogue magazine, becoming one of the first commercial photographers to cross the schism that had separated commercial from art photography. He did so in part by using the same technique no matter what he photographed: isolating his subject, allowing for scarcely a prop and building a work of graphic perfection through his printing process. Art critics considered the results to be icons, not just images, each one more artistically powerful than the person or object in the frame.

A notorious perfectionist, he traveled widely, carrying his own studio to the ends of the earth to photograph Peruvians in native dress, veiled Moroccan women or the Mudmen of New Guinea. Despite his appreciation for the art and craft of beautifully designed fashion, Penn later reached outside of the unreachable world it represents. To escape or perhaps contest it, in the late 1960s he started photographing crushed cigarette butts and street debris. He shot the cigarette butts in the same manner that he often photographed fashionable designer dresses, close up, with an intense graphic precision, against a white background. He then built his negatives into “platinum-palladium” prints, a meticulous and expensive process that involves repeated printings of a negative on one piece of paper to create an extraordinary sense of depth and richness. New York’s Museum of Modern Art found the cigarette butts exhibit-worthy in 1975. Far-sighted reviewers praised Penn’s ability to turn discarded objects into art, but the contradictions in his work still bothered some critics.

In 1950, while in Paris he went from a session of photographing the Italian sculptor Alberto Giacometti to photographing French butchers. His collection of more than 250 photos of butchers, bakers, street workers and others in the series entitled The Small Trades, was acquired last year by the J. Paul Getty Museum and is on view now through January 10th.

So check out the second hand of the watch. Ah yeah!

Michelle Pfeiffer is 50! That honestly twists my head a little to think that, but seriously, she’s 50. But take a look at these photos from the upcoming Miramax Films’ release, “Chéri.” Pfeiffer certainly doesn’t look too old to play the steamy, seductive role of Lea de Lonval in the film that reunites her with her “Dangerous Liaisons” director, Stephen Frears.

Michelle Pfeiffer and Rupert Friend in "Chéri"

“Chéri” is set in turn-of-the-century Paris, and tells a seductive and sensational tale, of a ravishing Parisian courtesan (Michelle Pfeiffer)who takes a naïve young man half her age (rising British star Rupert Friend), into her boudoir to teach him a thing or two about sex, love and women. But of course, he learns all too well out to be her perfect match. He doesn’t want to grow up and she doesn’t want to grow old and together they defy all of society’s rules.

Michelle Pfeiffer in "Chéri"

Their affair is pure pleasure – as they trade light-hearted romantic barbs and indulge in their delicious, upside-down chemistry — until they do the one thing that will make an outrage of it all, most significantly to themselves: fall in love. And gradually they each come to see there will be weighty consequences of this unusual affair. “Chéri” is a daring and sensual look at a Belle Epoque liaison, and shows what happens as sex, money, age, society — and unexpectedly, love itself – all come into play when desire heats up.

“Chéri” opens in theaters across the United States in late June, and will open in Oklahoma City and Tulsa in early July. Check online, or in your local newspaper to determine if the film is showing in your city.
