Ok, own up! Who persuaded us all back in January that Shrove Tuesday was on the 19th of February? Well, none of us minded as we got to eat lots of citrussy cakes and pancakes all over again. A fantastic array of goodies adorned the table as we all helped ourselves to a varied choice (although, as usual, we took a lot more home with us!) To any partner who doesn’t come to the Club and doesn’t ‘get it’ I challenge you not to understand when your loved one returns with far too much cake for one person to eat. Many of us now return home to our partners and are simply met with ‘where’s my cake?’ Oh well, it’s nice to be appreciated!!

Here’s what was baked with photos to follow:

Provencal Pancakes with Salsa. Vegan
Key Lime Pie
Lemon Drop Muffins
Jaffa Cake Cupcakes
Lemon & Lime Sponge
Lemon Everything Cake
Lemon Cake. Vegan
Lemon Scotch Pancakes with Sultanas & Cranberries. Vegan
Lemon Curd Cheesecake
Lemon Sandwich Cake
Grapefruit Marmalade Cake
Lemon Cheesecake with Lemon Jelly & Frozen Grapes
Orange Syrup & Almond Cake
Chocolate Orange Muffins

Last Tuesday, 10 members of the cake and pudding club met at the Youth Centre in Collingham. If I do say so myself, it was a great success. The Youth Centre was a perfect place to hold the club, just the right size, with a working kettle and plenty of cups and saucers! Now we’ve figured out how to turn the heating on, the next meeting should be a warmer affair. For 2 hours we ate and chatted about baking, ourselves and everything in between. It was great to hear the feedback from everyone and I felt so pleased that everyone had been excitedly telling their friends and colleagues that they were attending the club. I began by telling everyone how I came by the idea and why I wanted to set the club up (outlined in the “About” section of this Blog) then everyone introduced themselves and said what they’d brought….

Emma – Bread Pudding

Sara – Eve’s Pudding with Almond Custard

Sam & Lucy – Banana Muffins, Lemon Drizzle Muffins

Heather & Harriet – Victoria Sponges

Kat – Vanilla Cupcakes

Sara – Blue Peter Banana Cake

Amy – Cornflake Tart

Katie (me) – Cherry Cake

I ensured that I’d only eaten a packet of Wotsits for my dinner to leave lots of room for cake! Most people had come on an empty stomach to ensure that much cake could be scoffed! I only managed 5 varieties before I gave up. Luckily we were all able to take some home with us. My husband was very pleased to see all the yummies which I returned with and soon helped me polish them off.

I’m very much looking forward to the next club to be held at the Youth Centre on Thursday 17th May, 7-9pm. Theme this time is Royal Tea Party. Read into that how you wish, whether it be something Jubilee related, perhaps Alice in Wonderland or just a tea party favourite.

Apologies for the brief write up, I’m recovering from minor surgery and I’m not quite with it but I wanted to make sure I’d written something. The only cure for me – plenty of cake and pudding!

Kat suggested that everyone could have a go at Blogging so I’ll bring details of how to sign up for this Blog to the next meeting. Heather suggested that we all bring a recipe to share at the next meeting so do bring one (or many!) if you would like to.

I’ll end with some photos from the night…

I’ve decided to try to start a Cake & Pudding Club in the wonderful village of Collingham near Newark in Nottinghamshire. I moved to Collingham nearly 2 years ago and haven’t really met many people in the village. Like in many villages there seem to be many excellent and regular activities in the daytime but I have struggled to find any in the evenings when I am at home.

I love to bake and had heard about “Cake Clubs” so investigated the idea but found the rules too restrictive. After speaking to my neighbours I decided on a cake AND pudding club with few “rules.” Personally, I sometimes struggle baking traditional cakes but get on much better with cupcakes, tarts and puddings.

The idea is for attendees to bake a dessert based on a theme and bring it to the Club. My general aim is for myself and others to meet new people and socialise, swap recipes, share tips and chat about absolutely anything whilst eating cake. I plan to hold an event every 4-6 weeks. I’ve come up with a few ideas and tips that will help guide bakers when they attend the Club…

From door to doorstep back and forth via Quarry Lane and biscotti, 2*2 espresso, waiting while the river flows over the confines and wheel bearings man argues over-biting ‘has-been’ and puma attired bus wasted wasters threaten a frown too far. A nice moment getting charged on caffeine and almond bakes before the complacent barrier of death’s bus queue makes the journey hazardous seem. Ten apologetic minutes might feel stretched ad finitum, but fur merry friend waiting to gallop upon that heath and rugged wilds. Where once men and women of the clothe did run their course this lent to go on pilgrimages and gathered in the corn or apple falls by hallowed eve.
To walk over towards Sicklinghall and behind Woodhall back through Linton Common, Millbeck and Collingham Wood I notice we lag by 2pm and most footfalls speak of getting back for a recharge of our bodies before you return to your first home: 11 miles.

Wetherby is apathy: where pubs were once fun there is now stagnant piss water and un-brushed linoleum.
