16.11.09 - Head or director? Becoming it is not easy. Well, at least twelve years of professional experience are quite a lot, but the job seems to be be quite important – being Head of Technical Training Department at the EASA in Cologne, Germany. This is an EU institution and the deadline of this job offer is Monday, November 16. I wish you really good luck!

The next job is, instead, addressed to all of you who are specialized in economics. It is a post of Market Infrastructure Expert at the ECB, the European Central Bank, which – if I am not wrong – should be based in Frankfurt, Germany. Closing date is  Tuesday 17 November.

Finally, my last book for the Fall Into Reading Challenge 2009.  I made very good time despite adding two more books to the list.  But early as it is, I’ll have to wrap up as the Holidays draw near and my chances to read more books decrease as things are starting to get hectic.

I’ve wet my feet in breadmaking and I’m experimenting on perfecting scrumptious cinnamon rolls and ensaimadas (Filipino brioche) for gift-giving.    As I’ve never baked anything except for the occasional brownies, I forsee myself ambitiously wrestling with bread recipes, baking my day away, and snatching up my book only in between rising times.  So, let’s see how many more reviews I can dish out.

This book was a great finale to the challenge, albeit  a dark and brooding one.

The Story :

Ruth bas Elazar Saul is daughter of the chief rabbi of the Jewish quarter of Cologne and a very good midwife with very unconventional methods.  Her  advanced  midwifery skills coupled with her studies in Kabbalah, taints Ruth’s reputation with suspicions of witchcraft in an era paranoid about heretics and devil worshippers.

She becomes the unfortunate target of the malevolent obsession of a Spanish friar and head of the Inquisition to Cologne.  Solitario takes his vengeance on an unknowing Ruth simply because she is the daughter of the woman who had jilted him and shredded his pride many years back.  Ruth is tried for witchcraft; but in the process gains the interest of the cleric, Detlef  von Tennen, cousin and close aide to the Archbishop of Cologne.

Detlef falls madly in love with Ruth and does everything in his power to avert her fate.  He succeeds and both start a love affair that in its time,  was unforgivable to both Jews and Catholics alike.  Amid this difficult union, Ruth and Detlef must struggle to live in a dangerous century at war with new philosophies threatening to overthrow its established beliefs, power and social structures.

The Review :

The book opens with “a woman writhing in labor”  which gave me the correct impression that I’d have a toe curling time with this one.

Learner is  an intense,  graphic writer who writes with a sensuality that is both raw and elegant.  Her torture scenes feel  horrendously realistic ; her descriptions of everyday life and her characterizations are rich and intimate, full of vivid details of seventeenth century Cologne, its lifestyle, its predominant psyche, and its prevailing social and religious atmosphere.

This novel is first and foremost a microcosmic representation of  a Europe inexorably marching toward the Age of Enlightenment, torn at one end by traditional society clinging tenaciously and fearfully to established institutions of power, thoughts, and morals and on the other, by radical philosophies and emerging new acceptances by free thinkers or the libertines of that time.

Solitario, the Spanish  Inquisitor, is the embodiment of the 17th century Roman Catholic Church, an institution reacting dangerously to threats to  its centuries-old European dominance by the emergence of new thoughts, values, mores and the new Protestant religion.  He is obsessed about bringing onto the Inquisition table  the Jewess, Ruth, and the breakaway cleric, Detlef, both of whom represent radical opposition to the faith which have begun to erode the Church’s right to absolute power.

Stories like these make me glad I was born in the 20th century, where we have education, modern conveniences, good medical knowledge and practices, and in most parts of the world, respect and freedom for all sorts of religions and ideas.  Imagine living in fear of torture and death because your ideas are heretically opposed to the prevailing beliefs of a Church which hold both  secular and spiritual domains in its grip.

It was also interesting for me to find out that Judaism has its own brand of occultism.  It has its own demons, grimoire, incantations, spells, and talismans.  The Kabbalah is practiced by a certain Jewish sect which does not find ready acceptance in the general Jewish populace; but nevertheless is a recognized albeit esoteric branch of the Jewish religion.

To Read Or Not To Read :

I have read reviews that slam this book for its love angle and gratuitous sex (which I didn’t find unwarranted at all).  The romance here is simply a support angle to the overall story of the book and is not the author’s point at all.  So if you are looking for a nice historical romance,  pass this up; this novel would be way out in left field.

However,  if you just want a well written story with a good historical background, The Witch of Cologne will be just the thing.  Although, be prepared for a very dark and somber tone (well matched with the era) throughout its entirety and for a substantial amount of graphic elements assiduously detailed in this book.

In A Nutshell :

Learner’s unconventional writing style marries quite well with her  objective of presenting a glimpse of medieval Europe in the cusp of social change, a dark and fearful transition for many,  when institutions of power, both political and religious, clawed desperately to maintain the status quo.  The story poses intelligent questions, some of which must have influenced how modern Europe evolved.

Don’t let the suggestive cover fool you into thinking this book is a shallow, sleazy read.  The book has the complexity and depth that makes it interesting and well worth your while — a perfect example  to heed the the adage:   “Don’t judge a book by its cover.”

Is Pherlure cologne a scam or the “real deal”? The sad truth is most pheromones don’t work. If you’re going to spend money on something to get you more women, you expect it to work! So, let me begin my revealing review of Pherlure Cologne.

Pherlure’s Bold Claims

Pherlure pheromones come in a large bottle and claim to sexually attract women, make women sexually aroused, and get you more sex. This is exactly why I decided to try it. I decided to test Pherlure cologne against 6 other pheromones to gauge its strength.

First Impressions of Pherlure

The first thing I noticed right out of the box is this stuff smells awesome! Chicks have come up to me and remarked how good I smell. It only takes a couple sprays for this stuff to work. There’s other pheromones that smell good too but I am not sure if they have real pheromones. I wore Pherlure for a week and tried it at restaurants, clubs, work, and even the gym. Here’s what I noticed; more eye contact, smiling, flirting, and light touching.

I bought Pherlure for one reason – to get laid. These are the only results that really matter.

Reality Check: real pheromones will attract women but you still gotta close the deal if you wanna have sex! The good news is that with the right pheromone, you have a months supply of “liquid panty remover”. If you think you’re gonna be reeling in some hotties back to you pad, I recommend adding a few squirts of Pherlure inside your car and in your bedroom.

Of the 10 girls that approached me, 7 showed a strong interest in “getting to know me”. Isn’t it nice when science can help the average guy get laid!

It was hard to believe that “human sex pheromones” actually worked and could get me laid – but my experience proves otherwise. You won’t catch every girl but your batting average will significantly improve. If you want to attract women with pheromones, than you want the most effective one.

The sad truth is the quailty of the pheromones on the internet varies greatly.

With Fury Tanya Ury takes on the role of one of the Three Furies, also known as the Erinnyes, or Eumenides, the so-called Avenging Goddesses of the Antique, who avenged heavy crimes. She carries a suitcase full of scripts and articles written by her grandfather, Alfred H. Unger, which had mistakenly been delivered to her home address and not the City Archives ten years ago, and which she kept. At the “hole”, the location where the Cologne City Archives once stood, she reads one of these articles about Cologne, from 1948.

The Lights Go Out In Cologne...

First it was Honda. BMW soon followed suit. Now, after a brief and altogether forgettable stint in Formula 1, it’s Toyota’s turn to bow out of auto racing’s pinnacle championship series. I for one was disappointed to hear the news as I had always held high hopes for the Japanese team (based out of Cologne) to become one of the sport’s super powers. Much like Honda and BMW, Toyota successfully integrated breakthroughs in their Formula 1 R&D into their road fleet… hell, its one of the major reasons, if not the major reason, that car manufacturers throw their caps and millions upon millions of dollars, euros, pounds sterling and yen into the ring. One need only think of the F1 engineering advances that have been integrated into Ferrari’s production car platforms to understand the possibilities attainable by constructors in the sport. However, despite one of the championship’s consistently highest budgets, and despite employing some of the most innovative minds in the automotive industry, they could never build a winner.

Lets look at the facts to see just how exactly this kart hit the tyre wall:

2002: Panasonic Toyota F1 makes their debut in Formula 1. Allan McNish and Mika Salo take to the track as the team’s first drivers though, unfortunately, manage only two points collectively on the season. In other news, Michael Schumacher delivers an absolute gem of a season, winning yet another drivers title.

2003: Toyota brings in Brazillian Cristiano Da Matta from ChampCar and Frenchman Olivier Panis from BAR to shake things up in the driver department. It works, sort of, as the team managed 16 points in the championship, good for… well it was good for 8th place. At least they beat Minardi. Too bad Michael beat everybody.

Panis Prepares...

2004: Toyota ran Panis and Da Matta for the second straight year… and finished 8th again. While there were some bright spots it was a season marred by disqualification at Montreal and involvement in an industrial espionage fiasco with Ferrari.

2005: Jarno Trulli and Ralf Schumacher join Toyota and results markedly improved. Ralf and Jarno snared five podium finishes between them, and managed to score points in all but one race culminating in 6th and 7th place finishes respectively in the drivers championship and securing a 4th place finish in the constructors championship. Far and away the best team the Japanese stall ever put on the road.

2006: More setbacks, and especially disappointing because the team was unable to build on their results in 2005. 6th place finish in the constructors.

2007: A complete write-off. 14 points… total. Ralf leaves Toyota.

Ralf Walks...

2008: A new star is born in Timo Glock and the team has high hopes for the combination of experience and skill between their two drivers. Toyota managed to squeeze out 55 points and finish in 5th place in the hunt for the constructors title.

The Long Goodbye

2009: Glock and Trulli get out to a blistering start scoring 3 podiums between them in the first 4 races, before petering off in typical fashion. Despite the introduction of a groundbreaking (and FIA loophole exploiting) double diffuser, the team could manage only two additional podiums en route to a 5th place finish in the quest for dominance in Formula 1 construction. Following the end of yet another mediocre season, and taking into account their embroilment with the FIA ,which almost saw Toyota split away from F1 and join a rival championship series, in conjunction with Toyota’s first financial loss EVER, the team decided to take its final bow.

One Final Note:

Keep in mind that despite Toyota’s wish to leave F1, their exit may not be as easy as one might imagine. The FIA is currently investigating the legality of Toyota’s decision to forgo the 2010 season, despite having signed on in a last minute agreement to ’save’ the sport last spring. In any event, should that investigation turn cold, and given the cyclical nature of the sport, I am quite certain that Toyota will eventually wander back to Formula 1… This writer hopes it will be sooner rather than later.

Perhaps, this could be my best shot of the Cologne Cathedral and resulted also from the photo tour with a friend of mine.  You may perhaps assume that it is a HDR-Image, but you’re wrong. I used several pictures and the mask technique to avoid overexposed areas because no current DSLR is capable to cover such a large dynamic range and a HDRI-attempt plus Tone Mapping reduced the brilliance too much, which was somehow not my cup of tea.

I’m going away again tomorrow. Actually, that’s not strictly accurate (but when has this blog ever been?). This time I’m not just going away, but being sent away. Work is sending me on a seminar. A two day seminar… the two days being Friday and Saturday(!) in Cologne. So we (my colleague and I) are leaving tomorrow straight after work. Annoyingly, I should have been going to Vienna with Jan this weekend – it’s a friend of his 30th birthday and there’s a party. But it cannot be helped. At least I’ll get to see the Cologne Christmas market though… it’s supposed to be nice.

And now I have to go and figure out a way to get 2 pairs of socks washed and dried in time for me to pack them in my going away for the weekend bag. The radiators shall be on full blast tonight methinks…
