My husband has a way with words.

He came home today a little frantic. He needed to take a quick shower and head back out the door to make his 4:45pm doctor appointment. We normally shower together, and today was no exception.

(An advantage to having a carpenter/contractor as a husband? Extra large, travertine tiled shower stall with two facing show heads. Value? Priceless.)

Shower time is used to recount the day’s events. Bitch and moan when called for, comfort and bolster when needed. It works for us.

Our shower conversation this afternoon went something like this:

“This might be the visit,” my husband said.

“Visit for what?”

“THE visit. You know, when they prod my spinkter.”

I gasped, and placed a hand on his chest. “Oh no, honey. If you don’t want them to do it, just say no. You don’t have to. What’s the worst that can happen? Nothing!”

He wasn’t convinced. “What’s the alternative? Grandfather died of colon cancer, Unlce of prostrate cancer. I’d rather be prodded than rot from the inside out.” He smiled his devilish grin at me and added, “I’ll ask for the two finger special.”

Uncomprehending, I smile wanly back at him, and continue soaping. He started talking about work, turned off his shower head, and got out to dry. I stayed in, not quite finished (ok, yes, I take twice as long). He keeps talking as he heads out the bathroom to change. I don’t quite hear any of what he said after “two finger special”. Realization dawns like a full moon on a cold night.

“Two Finger Special!”

My honey-bunny pops his head back into the bathroom. “You just got that?”

(Ok, it was funny at the time. :shrug: )

I felt that kidney stones were the culprit causing me so much pain and the fever. I was adamant that these were the worst stones I had ever had. Finally, my road journey had ended and arrived at the hospital. Being a part of a small town in Branson and owning my business there, much to my surprise word had spread about my illness quickly. During my intake at the hospital, over a dozen people were there waiting at the hospital for me to get home to Branson. I knew when the doctor told me that the waiting room was full of people praying, God had sent them to lend support because of the obstacles I would face.

Searching for answers and leading the doctors in the wrong direction telling them about kidney stones almost took my life. Multiple tests were run and the pain was so extreme I could only sweat and pray for God to take me home. After several hours of suffering and dozens of people holding my hand and praying for me, the time came when I was all alone. Honestly, I was feeling better and knew God had given me the relief that I desperately had prayed for. At that moment, my doctor rushed into my room. He explained that I had an abscess in the colon. The reason I was feeling relief was it had started to burst. If I did not have surgery I was going to die, and he was very concerned if I would make it through the surgery. If I did pull through, it was now evident that I would have a colostomy at 35.

I was devastated. The only thing I knew to do was to start getting my affairs in order. Immediately, I contacted my business partners, public relations people, and show promoters to let them know the situation at hand. The hardest task was calling my parents and telling them, knowing they would not get to Branson before the surgery and that I might not see them again. I had no idea that the storm was not over we had just barely begun.

47 visitors had registered at the nurses’ station that day. People from all walks of life, including celebrities praying for my future and God’s will. Some people that I barely knew, they maybe had performed or worked on one of my shows. With only an hour from surgery the social worker and my pastor started praying with me, knowing that the odds are not in my favor to pull through. At that moment the reality of a colostomy hit me like a rock. I was 35, never married, and no kids. No one would ever want someone with a colostomy. Little did I know how God would humble me to my knees and rebuild my whole life through a stomach wafer and a bag we call a colostomy. Still an hour before surgery the uninvited guest had not shown itself to me. I just wanted to give up and go to be with Jesus. Little did I know I was still on a mountain top and the valley had not even approached me.

The attitude we have when we face a challenge is what gets us through life. Did I ever stop to think how lucky I was to live in a country that had medical technology? Did I think about how blessed I was to have the ones who loved me there reaching out to help me? Did I think about others who have it so much worse than a colostomy? Sometimes we are selfish in the storm and forget how good we have it.

If the smell of beets makes you gag but you simply can’t get enough sour crème and chive potato chips, your Mom may be to blame — and not because of what she fed you growing up. Several studies show that food preferences may be set even before you’re born, as early as 13 weeks after gestation. And those preferences derive from what your Mom ate while you were in the womb.

The cancer cells have a solidify in general with gland-forming cells of colon cancers. Nearly all adenocarcinomas of the bladder are invasive. Less than 1 per cent of bladder cancers are small-cell carcinomas. Chemotherapy for these cancers is of the same kind to that used for small-cell carcinoma of the lung. Cancers rarely start in the muscle cells of the bladder. It is a very helpful tool to keep track of the bladders behavior.

Intestinal disease genomics and how hedgehogs cause arthritis… Genetic Clues to ‘Belly Aches’

Intestinal disease genomics and how hedgehogs cause arthritis…

Genetic Clues to ‘Belly Aches’ in Children: The largest genomic investigation into early onset inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis involved the efforts of an international research team. In total, genetic information from 3,400 children with IBD and 12,000 healthy children were compared. This study resulted in the identification of five genetic regions associated with susceptibility to pediatric and adolescent IBD. The team is now taking a closer look at these regions to try to identify the specific proteins that may explain why or how the disease develops. Another question that they would like to address is why some individuals develop IBD early whereas others develop it later in life. Two Toronto researchers, Dr. Anne Griffiths (Sickkids) and Dr. Mark Silverberg (Mount Sinai Hospital), contributed their expertise to the study, which appears in this week’s issue of Nature Genetics.

Colon Cancer Susceptibility Genes: In another intestinal disease research project, scientists noticed that different strains of mice exhibited different levels of resistance or susceptibility to colon cancer induced by a chemical carcinogen. Using genetic studies, the determining factor was mapped to a specific region in chromosome 3 that they designated as colon cancer susceptibility locus 3 (Ccs3). Within this region are about 94 known genes and they have identified a subset that are expressed at high levels in the colon. What is also interesting is that Ccs3 in mice is homologous to regions in human chromosome 1 and 4, which also contain genes known to be associated with inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal cancer. This mouse model will be a very useful tool for future studies on the pathogenesis of colon cancer. Dr. Philippe Gros led the research team at McGill University and published the study in the journal Oncogene.

Hedgehogs are Key to Osteoarthritis: An unexpected discovery may hold the key to solving painful osteoarthritic disease. Elevated expression or activity of a group of proteins called Hedgehog resulted in the development of osteoarthritis in mice. In simple terms, the balance of this signalling pathway in chondrocyte cells determines whether they go on to make cartilage or bone. In the animal model of osteoarthritis, Hedgehog levels are high and there is less cartilage being produced from the chrondrocytes. Obviously, Hedgehog becomes an immediate pharmacologic target for the treatment or prevention of osteoarthritis. You may find it strange that this study on a disease primarily affecting adults is from The Hospital for Sick Children but it just shows that research is full of surprises and you never know where it may take you! Dr. Benjamin Alman and his research team reported their study in the online edition of Nature Medicine.

Pathway Signalling Antibody Production: A key signalling pathway required for the efficient production of antibodies was identified recently and verified using knockout mice. A receptor on T cells called ICOS (Inducible Costimulator) is required for their conversion into a specialized type of T cell called Tfh cells (follicular B helper T cells). As the name implies, their role is to help B cells make the right antibodies to the target. Dr. Woong-Kyung Suh’s team at Institut de recherches cliniques de Montréal discovered that ICOS activates an enzyme called phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K), which eventually leads to the release of factors that trigger the formation of Tfh cells. With this knowledge, researchers may find ways to tweak the system to suppress (in autoimmune disease) or enhance (in infectious disease) antibody production as required. The study is reported in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

NCCAM (NATIONAL CENTER FOR COMPLEMENTARY AND ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE) is sponsoring a 5-year study of grape seed extract for prevention of colon cancer. The study, being conducted at the University of Colorado – Denver, is based on a number of promising lab studies of this botanical substance.

Here’s an excerpt from the abstract of this study:

Colon Cancer Prevention by Grape Seed Extract

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second most common cause of cancer deaths in humans, and about 5% of the US population will develop CRC in their life times. Overall, CRC growth, progression and metastasis involve a gradual accumulation of genetic and epigenetic changes over a period of years. One approach to control CRC growth and metastasis could be its prevention by phytochemicals present in diet and those consumed as dietary supplement, which inhibit one or more events of neoplastic stages and reduce overall cancer risk. Grape seed extract (GSE) is a widely consumed dietary supplement in the United States for its several health benefits, and is a rich source of standardized phytochemicals known as proanthocyanidins. [...] We anticipate that proposed studies will identify GSE as a mechanism-based dietary supplement agent for the prevention of CRC, and will establish its in vivo efficacy in pre-clinical CRC models. As a practical and translational approach, the long- range goal of these studies would be to define and establish the usefulness of GSE for the prevention and intervention of human CRC.

I’ve eaten like crap all day. It’s not necessary causing a horrible day bathroom-wise, it’s just made me feel funny. Maybe just a little “off.” But some days, I need to do this. To remember I’m still human, and experience what I have to be thankful for.

In the season of Thanksgiving, I have much to appreciate. This entire year has been full of fear, suffering, pain and readjustment from a second colon surgery and second diagnosis of cancer. But looking at the experience that happened almost a year later, I am in a much better place than I ever thought I’d be.

I’m able to still enjoy life. I let myself heal after surgery for a few months and tried to keep my physical activity to a minimum and eat very little, bland food. But after awhile, I started feeling better.

I can once again eat the amazing onion rings at the cool bowling alley. I can visit “Kansas City’s Top Mexican Restaurant” and have a decent evening following the meal. I can go to boxing class again and run three miles. Sure, I’ve “gotta go” more than other people. But it’s so worth it now that I can finally live again.

There’s a lot of grumbling to be had when you’re a semi-colon. It does make life harder some days, and is a huge pain if you combine the wrong food with the wrong stress level on the wrong day. But other times, it’s really not so bad. And thankfully for me, those other times are becoming more frequent than not. And for that, I am very, very thankful.

Yesterday was my father’s birthday. I celebrated by making a trip to Walgreen’s to purchase a 238-gram bottle of Miralax, two Dulcolax tablets and a 64-ounce bottle of Gatorade. Today I’m home trying to get all that into my stomach so I can wait, uncomfortably, for the inevitable result.

My father didn’t make it to this birthday—or any other birthday in the last 18 years. He died of colon cancer when I was still raising babies and just starting a magazine. He was 67.

That age doesn’t feel so far away anymore. Which is why I’m putting myself through today’s preparation for tomorrow’s colonoscopy.

It’s my second one and it’s three years overdue. I had my first at age 45 because of my “family history,” as the doctor so subtly put it.

This isn’t an easy thing to schedule. There is, of course, the avoidance-of-unpleasant-tasks aspect of it. There is the where-do-I-find-two-whole-days-of-time aspect of it. And there is, of course, the what-if-they-find-something-scary aspect of it.

But that’s why you do it, of course, because if they do find something they can typically take care of it before it becomes a problem.

And I have a lot more living to do than I can pack into the 14 more years my dad had available to him when he was my age.

If you have been to out to dinner in America in the past couple of years, you probably noticed that the size of the food portions are enormous! It is no secret that people are eating much more than they used to.

In 1980 14% of the American adult population was obese; by 2000 the figure reached 31% (The Obesity Society). That is a lot is fat people with lots of physical ailments due to the extra pounds. Indeed, look at the statistics on obesity:

58 million Americans are overweight;

40 million Americans are obese;

3 million Americans are morbidly Obese’

80% of Americans over the age of 25 are overweight;

78% of American’s not meeting basic activity level recommendations;

25% of Americans live a completely sedentary lifestyle with no exercise;

76% increase in Type II diabetes in adults 30-40 yrs old since 1990;

80% of type II diabetes related to obesity;

70% of cardiovascular disease related to obesity;

42% breast and colon cancer diagnosed among obese individuals;

30% of gall bladder surgery related to obesity; and

26% of obese people having high blood pressure

In the United States, the consumption of calories increased from 1,542 per day for women in 1971 to 1,877 per day in 2004. The figures for men were 2,450 in 1971 and 2,618 in 2004. At the same time, many people have stopped walking, biking, and exercising due to work demands, televisions, computer games and the internet.

The majority of those unneeded calories are coming from carbos, such as soft drinks and drinks with high fructose corn syrup. Increased consumption of sweetened drinks has contributed significantly to the raised carbohydrate intake of most young American adults over the last three decades. The consumption of fast-foods has tripled over the same period. It is a dentist and cardiologist’s nightmare.

Various other factors also may have contributed to America’s increased calorie and carbohydrate intake:

In 1984 the Reagan administration freed up advertising on sweets and fast foods for children – regulations had previously set limits.

Agricultural policies in most of the developed world have led to much cheaper foods.

The U.S. Farm Bill meant that the source of processed foods came from subsidized wheat, corn and rice.

Corn, wheat and rice became much cheaper than fruit and vegetables at the market place due to farm subsidies to huge companies such as Archer Midland Daniels.

Research from Brian M. Riedl at the Heritage Foundation showed that nearly three-quarters of subsidy money goes to the top 10% of recipients Some subsidies are positive – that is money is paid for increased production, while other subsidies are negative where tax revenues are given to farmers in exchange for not growing a particular commodity.

For years the animal milk industry has told us that milk is good for us. This was because one ingredient, calcium, is required by our bodies. What the milk industry has never explained is what all the rest of the ingredients in animal milk do to our bodies. Numerous studies, including ones conducted by the animal milk industry, have shown a direct link between consumption of animal milk products and a loss of bone density, not a strengthening of them. There goes the number one selling point, so what’s left? Maybe habit, and the investment of industry. Consumption of animal milk has also been linked to heart disease, cancers, obesity, allergies, diabetes, and other health conditions though, so like stopping smoking, it’s time we began asking ourselves why we are letting advertisements run our lives. Why are we doing this to our bodies, to the environment, and certainly to the animals themselves? Consumption of animal milk has been linked directly to breast cancer, ovarian cancer, colon cancer, and prostate cancer. Here’s a recent press release from the chairman of the Cancer Prevention Coalition. Smoking doesn’t kill you immediately; it’s a slow painful death. Despite this knowledge people find it difficult to quit because they’re addicted. Consumption of animal milk has also been linked to health risks and terminal disease, but in this case quitting is much easier: there’s no addiction to break, only habits. Now almost all markets have products such as almond milk, soy milk, rice milk, oat milk, or others that come in a wide variety of flavors (yes, chocolate too!) and can be used in coffee, on cereal, in recipes, in baking, in anything just like the animal milk we grew up with.

Our parents’ generation smoked, but our generation learned better. Our parents’ generation drank animal milk, but our generation learned better.

December 1, 2005 my career was on top of the world. I was working with some of the biggest celebriti

December 1, 2005 my career was on top of the world. I was working with some of the biggest celebrities, in the country music industry, and had just finished the first national homecoming for Vietnam veterans that gained world exposure and turned out to be a history channel documentary. My mother’s health was still good enough to travel and a few months earlier my parents were my guest at Operation Homecoming USA and rubbing elbows with all of the Joint Chief of Staff to the President of the United States. In January 2005, I had directed and produced the Inaugural Ball for the President and First Lady.

I was just finishing a grueling tour- Nashville, Branson, Chicago, Davenport, Branson, Nashville, and on to Loveland to surprise my mom and dad for Thanksgiving all over a nine day stretch. God was already preparing me for the guest I hated for many years prior to December 2005. I look back on the tour and God let me see all the people that meant a lot to me and were close to my heart. My busy family, that never has much time for me when I travel, had all the time in the world. I remember thinking as I headed back to Branson after a great holiday how fortunate we were to spend time together. Everything was great as I parted back home knowing I needed rest before my military USO tour that would start five days before Christmas.

Amarillo, TX 2:00am it was evident to me that the uninvited guest had arrived not knowing hours from that moment my life would change forever. My temperature was 104 degrees and my focus was on home because I knew that something was crippling me on the inside. All by myself I traveled across Oklahoma praying to God that he would let me make it home, as God spoke to me through the radio- through song. I passed out in a rest stop bathroom. When I came to a man would not help me telling his son I had too much to drink. They thought I was drunk.

The only way I was able to make it to the hospital from that trip was through my faith in God. I knew I was extremely sick. I really was in so much pain my doctor was amazed I lived through the journey home. Prayer, scripture, and God’s voice got me home nothing else. All the teaching from my past kept running through my head along with memories from my childhood. If you really believe in God and really need his help he will see you through was clear to me that day. Even when you know there is a storm ahead, he will carry you to the storm and will help you to face your Uninvited Guest. When God is preparing you for a storm in your life who do you call out to? Who do you trust? Do you pull over to the side of the road and die or do you keep your eye focused on the solution and keep driving? Do you let the others who ignore your cry for help convince you to give up? The attitude that you choose and your faith will see you through!
