Epigenomics AG: First Blood Test for Colorectal Cancer Available in Germany

Epigenomics AG, a molecular diagnostics company focusing on the development and commercialization of in vitro diagnostic products for cancer, today announced that several German laboratories will start offering laboratory-developed colorectal cancer blood tests based on Epigenomics’ proprietary biomarker mSEPT9 on October 1st, 2009.

A blood test for colorectal cancer early detection that is easily integrated into an annual health check-up and does not require patient involvement is believed to be more acceptable to doctors and patients and has the potential to greatly increase the effectiveness of national screening programs. If tested positive in such an easy to use blood test, patients would be referred to a gastroenterologist for colonoscopy to confirm the diagnosis and initiate early treatment.

Epigenomics is a molecular diagnostics company with a focus on the development of novel products for cancer. Using DNA methylation biomarkers, Epigenomics’ tests in development aim at diagnosing cancer at an early stage before symptoms occur and thereby may reduce mortality from this dreaded disease.
The company is headquartered in Berlin, Germany, and has a wholly owned subsidiary in Seattle, WA, U.S.A.

I read the following article on Care2.com this morning. Many of us already know this but it is worth reminding everyone.

On Wednesday, July 22, the Cancer Project, an affiliate of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), a nonprofit organization that advocates vegetarianism and alternatives to animal research, filed a class-action consumer fraud lawsuit to require hot dog manufacturers to place warning labels on hot dog packages sold in New Jersey. The labels would read, “Warning: Consuming hot dogs and other processed meats increases the risk of cancer.”

According to PCRM’s press release, the lawsuit was filed on behalf of three New Jersey residents who purchased hot dogs without knowing that processed meats contribute to colorectal cancer.

Studies show that there is conclusive link between meat consumption and colorectal cancer.

The American Cancer Society even warns, “A diet that is high in red meats (beef, lamb, or liver) and processed meats such as hot dogs, bologna, and lunch meat can increase your colorectal cancer risk.”

New study results define adjuvant therapy for late colon cancer

Someone used the term MOSAIC to locate recently updated results from the multicenter trial of that name. They showed better overall survival for post-op patients with stage III colon cancer who received FOLFOX4 rather LV5FU2 without oxaliplatin.

Adjacent gene tops HER2 in judging anthracycline benefit in breast cancer

According to the bulk of the data, alterations in TOP2A—not HER2—are “the important predictive factors” in choosing whether to opt for adjuvant anthracyclines in treating breast cancer. So says an editorial in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute (JNCI).

Women with HER2-normal breast cancers should not receive anthracyclines, it adds, echoing the latest new report of an important association between HER2 and TOP2A (published in the same issue of JNCI).

Adding TOP2A further hones the analysis of when to opt for these risky adjuvants.

The study from Toronto found that women whose cancers had alterations of TOP2A showed major improvements in survival after an anthracycline regimen, while those with normal TOP2A genes showed no benefit whatsoever.

One of the genes often coamplified with HER2, TOP2A encodes a protein critical to several aspects of cell division. It is a known target of anthracycline.
