Portfolio as an intro - Portfolio als eerste kennismaking

My blog is getting kind of top-heavy… Can’t really expect anyone to go through it all in one go if they haven’t been around from the beginning

So already a while I was playing with the idea of some sort of portfolio by way of introduction. The biggest problem was what to choose… Photos hardly ever come to me one by one… they come in batches. And they come from all directions – events, people, streets, nature, music, situations… No way I could put all that in a portfolio. Take the best? Well, the best is the last good one till I get out on the streets again… So my choice has turned into something like closing my eyes and pointing at pictures. I hope it may give an impression of what I like to do… and there is a lot more if you have the time to look around

This time no link to something or other – just go to the top of the sidebar and there it is (Sorry! Could not help splitting it all up a bit again)…

Mijn blog begint wat topzwaar te worden… Ik kan van niemand verwachten dat ze dat allemaal in een keer doorlopen als ze niet vanaf de eerste uurtjes erbij waren

Daarom speelde al een tijdje het idee door mijn hoofd om als introductie een soort portfolio samen te stellen. Het grootste probleem was daarbij dat ik niet wist wat kiezen… Foto’s komen niet een per een mijn weg kruisen… ze komen gewoonlijk in pakken. En ze komen van alle richtingen – evenementen, mensen, straten, natuur, muziek, situaties… Onmogelijk om dat allemaal in een portfolio te steken. De beste foto’s eruit halen? Bon, de beste foto is gewoonlijk de laatste die ik goed vind tot ik terug de straat induik… Mijn keuze is dan wel zo iets geworden van ogen sluiten en met de vinger naar foto’s wijzen. Ik hoop dat het een idee geeft van wat ik graag doe… en er is nog veel meer als je de tijd hebt om wat rond te snuffelen

RAW, Lightroom... The Examples (De Voorbeelden)

So here we come to the last part of the RAW, Lightroom saga… a few examples to give you a better idea of what you can do in black & white. There is a lot more of course like working in color and also the different modules you can use like the very professional looking Slideshow, Prints, Website possibilities… And the management of your ‘photo park’ with the aid of e.g. keywords.

My little saga is meant as a lightfooted introduction. If it tastes like more, just ask Google for some more about RAW or Lightroom or both…

Zo, hier zijn we dan aan het einde van mijn RAW, Lightroom saga… enkele voorbeelden om je een beter idee te geven van wat je kunt doen, vooral in zwart wit. Natuurlijk is er nog veel meer zoals kleuren, de verschillende modules van de heel professioneel uitziende Diavoorstelling, Print, Website toepassingen… En het beheer van je ‘foto park’ met bvb trefwoorden.

Mijn kleine saga is bedoeld als een lichtvoetige inleiding. Als je zin hebt in meer, vraag Google om meer over RAW of Lightroom of beide…

Christmas Market - Kerstmarkt

After my last, rather dark posting prompted by the commercial merry-go-round that around Christmas reaches its speed limits and the difference between the ‘haves’ and ‘have nots’ seems even more painful than usual, I felt kind of guilty as there still is another face to this period of the year as well whereby families and friends get together and enjoy each other’s company… So I took a stroll through the Christmas Market…

Na mijn laatste, nogal donkere post, ingegeven door de commerciële mallemolen die rond Kerstmis zijn snelheidslimieten bereikt en het verschil tussen diegenen die wel of niet kunnen volgen nog pijnlijker lijkt dan normaal, voelde ik me toch wat schuldig. Tenslotte heeft deze periode van het jaar ook een ander gezicht waarbij families en vrienden samenkomen en van dit samenzijn genieten… Zo ben ik dan maar even gaan wandelen op de Kerstmarkt…

Christmas has arrived in Antwerp as well and has been welcomed by a Light Parade and the traditional Christmas Market that offers drinks, food and possible presents… On one of the coldest evenings so far and blown off my feet by the overly loud announcements and music I still persevered long enough to get a photographic impression

Kerstmis is in Antwerpen aangekomen en werd verwelkomd met een Lichtparade en de traditionele Kerstmarkt waar drinken, eten en mogelijke geschenken worden uitgestald… Op een van de koudste avonden tot nu toe en omvergeblazen door de veel te luide meldingen en muziek heb ik het toch nog lang genoeg volgehouden om met een fotografische indruk thuis te komen

The title might give you the idea that everybody went home and the slaughter of the Keyserlei (= Lindelei) trees is yesterday’s news. But nothing is further from the truth. First of all, each time I pass there, I am shocked anew to see the emptiness where once there was green life and I am sure I am not the only one. Then, while Groen! is going the official way to keep the same scenario from repeating itself, the people who fought so valiantly for the Keyserlei trees got together as well with their own claim that the city should stop chopping down trees. And it is not an empty thought as other decades old and perfectly healthy trees have already been felled and more is planned, the newest I heard of being the trees at the riverside. The reason why they have to go? Simply that they are impeding the view on the quay and the river from the side streets…

It is not only in the city that things go very wrong. The Forest of St Anneke and Noordkasteel that has escaped already once from complete annihilation are still very much in the danger zone. Schoten, one of the green communities surrounding the city, may see 400 trees disappearing along the channel – and almost just around the corner from where I live, a whole forest bordering on the well-known Kalmthoutse Heide (Heath of Kalmthout), a safe haven for a lot of animals and a passageway to another part of the heath for those same animals, has been sold to a contractor by the Province of Antwerp to be turned into a building site against the protests of many, the Kalmthout community included. And the list just keeps on growing…

In the meantime a short impression of yesterdays gathering that, I certainly hope, will be growing…

Misschien wekt de titel de indruk dat na de slachting van de Keyserleibomen (= Lindelei) bomen oud nieuws zijn. Maar niets is minder waar. Ten eerste, telkens dat ik daar passeer voel ik opnieuw de schok van de leegte te zien waar eens groen leven was en ik ben zeker dat ik niet de enige ben. Ten tweede, terwijl Groen! langs de officiële weg probeert om een herhaling van het Keyserlei-scenario te voorkomen kwamen gisteren de moedige vechters om het leven van de Keyserleibomen terug bijeen om hun eigen eis dat de kaalkap in de stad tot een einde moet komen, kracht bij te zetten. En het is zeker geen lege gedachte. Andere tientallen jaren oude, gezonde bomen zijn al tegen de vlakte gegaan en meer wordt gepland. Het laatste dat ik heb vernomen zijn de bomen aan de kaai van Antwerpen. Waarom? O, ze staan maar in het zicht vanuit de zijstraten…

Het is niet enkel in de stad dat het fout loopt. Het Bos van St Anneke en het Noordkasteel dat al eens aan totale vernieling is ontsnapt, zijn nog steeds heel dicht bij de gevarenzone. In Schoten langs het kanaal zouden 400 bomen kunnen verdwijnen – en ongeveer achter mijn hoekje, bij de welbekende Kalmthoutse Heide, is een heel bos dat aan de daar levende dieren een doorgang naar een ander deel van de heide en een veilig onderkomen biedt, door de provincie verkocht aan een aannemer om er een woonzone van te maken – en dit tegen herhaalde tegenwerpingen en protesten in, o.a. van de gemeente van Kalmthout. En de lijst blijft maar aangroeien…

Ondertussen een korte indruk van de bijeenkomst van gisteren waarvan ik zeker hoop dat het een groeiend succes kent…

Stop Poverty - Stop Armoede

World Day of Protest Against Poverty – and an action in Antwerp. The topic of the action > equal opportunity for all children to get an education.

It was a colourful mixture of all ages and origins that had come together on the Groenplaats. Several speakers accentuated the fact that a good education was the first step to leave poverty behind, this including a good knowledge of the language in the case of migrants from foreign countries. And as education does not come cheap there should be a coordinated effort to make a better future possible for the younger generations.

Though I agree with that point of view, looking around me I could not help seeing that there are very different aspects to this problem. While concentrating on education, pointing to a future for the youngsters, there are also those who are homeless now, living in the streets or moving from one shelter to the other in winter, dragging around their few possessions around in bags, a cart, who themselves have fallen off the bigger cart already some time ago for so many different reasons as there are people. More and more of them as society seems to shake at its roots these years, excluded from what is considered a ‘normal life’. Or the unknown, unseen poverty that hides behind a window with drawn curtains, behind a smile or anger to hide the shame… also the hopelessness of someone who did have a good education but has the wrong kind of name to find a job he/she studied for…

Especially when an older woman, walking with a cane and at that moment dangerously swinging her cane around and shouting they did not know what poverty was, left the gathering disgusted with it all, I realized this action was but a drop on a big pile of hot stones. But then, every shower starts with a drop, does it not?

Stop Poverty – Stop Armoede

NEDERLANDSE TEKST:

Werelddag van verzet tegen armoede – een actie in Antwerpen. Thema van de actie > gelijke onderwijskansen voor alle kinderen.

Het was een kleurrijke mengelmoes van alle generaties en achtergronden dat zich op de Groenplaats had gevonden. Verschillende sprekers legden er de nadruk op dat degelijk onderwijs de eerste stap is om uit de armoede te geraken waarbij goede kennis van de landstaal een grote rol speelt. Daar onderwijs wel geld kost, zou een gecoördineerde inspanning voor een betere toekomst voor de jongere generaties moeten zorgen.

Hoewel ik het hiermee eens ben, toen ik even rond mij zag, werd het me weer eens duidelijk hoeveel verschillende aspecten het probleem armoede heeft. Terwijl een groep zich (terecht) op het onderwijs en de toekomst richt, zijn er ook diegenen die nu op straat wonen, zich van een opvangthuis naar het ander slepen met het weinige dat ze bezitten in zakken of een karretje, mensen die al langer geleden de trein hebben gemist om zo veel redenen als er mensen zijn. Een groeiende groep nu de samenleving meer en meer wordt dooreen geschud, uitgesloten uit wat een ‘normaal leven’ wordt genoemd. Of de onzichtbare armoede, verscholen achter gordijnen, een glimlach of woede om de schaamte te verbergen… ook de hopeloze zoektocht van iemand die wel over voldoende kennis beschikt maar de verkeerde naam heeft om de job te vinden waar hij/zij voor heeft gestudeerd…

Vooral toen ik de oudere vrouw zag die haar stok gevaarlijk zwaaiend en woedend riep dat ze niet wisten wat armoede was en de samenkomst verliet, wist ik dat deze actie maar een druppel op een hoop hete stenen was. Maar – begint niet elke regenbui met een eerste druppel?

Keyserlei Trees to be cut down - Keyserlei Boomkap

Probably due to a bigger issue being protested in Brussels and all over the world this saturday not so many people seemed to have shown up for this protest action. But a lot of talking and explaining was going on between the protesters and the curious passers-by about why the trees should not be cut down…

Waarschijnlijk was er wegens de grotere protestactie en betoging in Brussel en over heel de wereld op deze zaterdag niet zo heel veel volk komen opdagen. Maar er werd veel gepraat met de nieuwsgierige passanten over waarom de boomkap op De Keyserlei moet tegengehouden worden.

Ghent - House of Alijn

The location of this small but very nice museum in the centre of Ghent started off its life in 1363 as a hospice to take care of the poor, the sick and the old, set up by the family Alijn. During the 16^th century additions were made to the original buildings and even a chapel was built. From 1926 on it went through several stages of being a centre for studying all aspects of folklore with different unions and groups. Ten years later a puppet theatre found a home on the premises and is still there to our days. In 1962 the museum took its final shape and was named Museum of Folklore. But after the 2nd WW,by lack of means and a vision through the years, this little gem turned into a sleeping museum , showing little initiative and renovation. There did not seem to be any strategy of gathering interesting items and information. Till the city of Ghent realized this and changed the management. A thorough reorganisation in 2000 brought new life into the museum, the name changed to House of Alijn and as in today’s society where so many different cultures are trying to live together, folklore had acquired a new meaning, the new name now also stands for an open door, an open mind and a new orientation, a wish and will for a broad public involvement.

When I visited the House of Alijn with a merry bunch of senior citizens, just by mistake I had the chance to walk through it alone and take a few pictures before finding the group and the guide…

De locatie waar dit klein maar zeer aantrekkelijk museum zich bevindt was oorspronkelijk een godshuis om de armen, de zieken en de ouderen te verzorgen, gesticht door de familie Alijn in 1363. Tijdens de 16de eeuw werden verdere gebouwen en een kapel toegevoegd aan het al bestaande gebouw. Vanaf 1926 gaf het complex onderdak aan verschillende verenigingen en groepen als een centrum voor de studie van volkskunde, vanaf 1932 onder de naam van het Folkloremuseum, in 1962 omgedoopt tot Museum voor Volkskunde. Ook een poppentheater vond zijn weg naar deze gebouwen en is er tot op heden. Maar na de 2e wereldoorlog leek dit museum bij gebrek aan middelen en visie in slaap gevallen te zijn en vertoonde weinig initiatief of vernieuwing – tot het Gentse stadsbestuur in 1997 voor een frisse wind zorgde. Met nieuw personeel en een nieuw beleid werd gewerkt om de grote achterstand in te halen. De naam veranderde in Huis van Alijn en daar folklore in een samenleving waar verschillende culturen naasteen leven van betekenis was veranderd, werd een open geest naar de wereld toe en een nieuwe oriëntatie, de wens en de wil om met een breder publiek te communiceren de drijfveer.

Toen ik het Huis van Alijn in het gezelschap van een groepje vrolijke senioren bezocht kon ik door een vergissing even helemaal alleen door het museum lopen en was in de gelegenheid om wat foto’s te trekken voordat ik de groep en de gids terugvond…

Het begon met ‘teasers’ zonder veel informatie. Ergens had ik gelezen dat dit de vervanging zou worden van de Duiker dit jaar en was nieuwsgierig…
