Like Someplace I’ve Been Before

Abstracts… the area in between familiar and unfamiliar space.  It’s that place that conjures dreams that you just can’t quite remember. Déjà vu and premonitions could happen here.  A space that is familiar enough to make you start thinking, but not so familiar as to let you off the hook. If you’re going to think here, you’re going to have to struggle through to the answers, if there are any.

Maybe that’s why so many people, myself included, find abstracts difficult. Because for me, perhaps more than any other style of art, the story in abstract art is more dreamlike and less narrative. It either grabs you out of the gate or it doesn’t. Maybe abstract art is more about the story that YOU (the viewer) bring to it.  

When I finished this one, the little artist’s voice in my head said “It’s done!” but my logical, left-brained side spoke up and said “It can’t be done! Where are the shapes? Where is the pattern? There is nothing here!”

But through this process I have learned to let the little artist’s voice be louder. And I have also discovered that for me, all my paintings start as an image, as daring colour splotches while the story and thinking come after.

Xtina’s alphabet bunting is now available as colourful flags / pennants. Screen printed with letters and images and threaded onto wooden hangers, with a vintage button at each end and a hanging ribbon. Display them on their own or together in a group – combining symbols and initials to make up little messages.

Even though Silver Parrot’s bracelet challenge has officially ended, I have made another bracelet inspired by the photos she posted – this time without polymer clay. I like the colour scheme, so I plan on making a matching lariat today – I won’t be able to post it before tomorrow, it is too dark now to take pictures. This bracelet was hard to photograph as well, I had to tweak the colours in photoshop, trying to get the colour of the gemstone beads quite right. The jade is still not green enough, the aventurine too red (same beads as in the butterfly bracelet), the turquoise a little too intense, and I can only hope that I didn’t turn the background too yellowish.

The inspiration for the colour scheme was this caterpillar of a Swallowtail butterfly (possibly Papilio polyxenes or Papilio joanae? I’m not sure):

The woods of Ireland are so beautiful in the Autumn/Winter time, they are something we should treasure and value, home to numerous species of plants and animals, so why not get out and talk a walk in your local woods, bring the dog of a walk, get the children to collect the colourful leaves to make a collage, gather moss and cones to make some christmas decorations, enjoy the tranquility and take in the nature all around you. You may also come across some of our built heritage such as walls or bridges. The photographs above show the remains of a walled garden and a beautiful bridge which are also part of our heritage. Many of the woods in Ireland are owned and managed by Coillte. So wrap up warm, wear your rain jacket and explore your local woodland.

Yesterday, before I went to sleep I was remembering old cartoons I used to watch when I was a child, heidi being so old and one of them.  Not sure any of you remember it, or saw it when you were kids but that inspired me to put this outfit together. Heidi wasn’t a redhead and lol, I don’t plan to look 5 years old here, but I had little images in mind like praries, wood shacks, quilts, big chunky socks and wedges and honey colors, trying to make  a sweet look, quirky and discretely odd. The odd detail being in the leopard bra peeking and contrasting with the checkered dress and other patterns. I guess I wanted a look that expressed an artsy girl’s, carefree spirit, inspired by folklore-ish culture. Dunno if I’m expressing myself clearly, but I can never explain how I see clothes anyways. pft. I am going redhead for a few days and I’m loving it. Muahs, Happy saturday. <3 Uma

दिनांक ११ नोव्हेंबर. सकाळपासुनच टिव्ही वर बातम्या सुरु होत्या. की आज म्हणे वादळ   येणार . गोव्याला -  जायचं होतं. सकाळपासुन टिव्ही ला चिकटुन बसलो होतो.सारख्या बातम्या पहात होतो.गोव्याला जायचं होतं. विमानतळावर फोन करुन पाहिला  तर कळलं की सगळ्या फ्लाईट्स लेट आहेत.सकाळची पहिली फ्लाइट गोव्याला लॅंड न करु शकल्यामुळे परत मुंबईला आली आहे. त्या नंतर एकही विमान गोव्याला गेलेले नाही.जाम वैतागलो. … काय करावं? मिटींग महत्वाची होती, म्हणुन कांहीही होवो , जाणं भाग होतं.

एक मित्र पण यायचा होता बरोबर, म्हणुन त्याला फोन केला आणि सरळ एअरपोर्ट ला पोहोचलो.आम्हाला चेक इन करुन विमानात नेउन बसवुन ठेवलं होतं.  चेक इन केल्यावर पण दिड तास टेक ऑफ घेतला नव्हता.

नंतर कॅप्टनने अनाउन्स केलं की वादळ पार झालंय, आणि गुजराथ कडे गेलंय आणि एकदाचं गोव्याला निघालो आम्ही. ही आयुष्यातली  पहिली वेळ होती विमानात बसल्यावर भिती वाटण्याची. सारखं वाटंत होतं की कॅन्सल केलं असतं तर बरं झालं असतं   . वातावरण इतकं ढगाळ होतं की त्यामुळे एअर पॉकेट्स निर्माण होऊन आकाश पाळण्यातल्या सारखं वाटत होतं..वाईट वातावरण असलं की थोडे गचके बसतात.. पण त्या दिवशी मात्र अक्षरशः बैलगाडीत बसुन प्रवास करतोय असं वाटंत होतं.

गोवा म्हंट्लं की लोकांना ( स्पेशिअली ऑफिसमधल्या समिष खाणाऱ्या आणि पिणाऱ्या ) काजु -बाटलितला- आणि पाकिटातला आठवतो. ऑफिस मधे पण गोव्याला टुर ला जातोय म्हंट्लं की लोकांच्या चेहेऱ्यावर एक वेगळाच भाव असतो , ऑफिस मधे. आता मस्त पैकी काजु खाउन पिउन या.. मासे खाउन या.. !अशा शुभेच्छा ( थोड्या जळक्या पण ) ऐकायला मिळतात.

जे मासे खाणारे आहेत ते तर नेहेमीच अरे गोव्याला अशोका मधे जा रे मडगांवला, किंवा शारदाश्रम चुकवु नकोस वास्को चं.. असे बहुमोल सल्ले पण देतात.काजु अर्थात मला खुप आवडतो, पण कोलेस्ट्रॉल वाढु नये म्हणुन जरा कमीच खातो.

बाटलीतली काजू .. म्हणजे फेणी मला अजीबात आवडत नाही. एक तर त्याला तुम्ही कांहीही म्हंटलं तरी ती देशी दारु. घेतांना पण पायनॅपल जुस, ऑरेंज जुस, किंवा कोल्ड ड्रिंक बरोबर घ्यायची, म्हणजे वास वगैरे कमी होतो. पण जर कधी चुकुन घेतलीच, तर दुसऱ्या दिवशी घामाला पण तो एक दारुचा वेगळाच दर्प येतो. आय ऍम नॉट द फेणी पर्सन..

पण खरी परिस्थिती अशी असते की कामा व्यतिरिक्त दिवस भरात अजिबात वेळ मिळत नाही. अगदी सकाळी एक तास स्वतः साठी मिळतो.. तो प्रभात फेरी करिता वपरतो. रात्रीच्या वेळेस मात्र थोडा वेळ मिळतो. गोव्याला गेलो की कोलवा बीच वरचं हॉटेल ग्रॅसिऍनो कॉटेजेस आहे तिथेच उतरतो. त्यामुळे रात्री कोलव्याच्या शेर ए पंजाब  मधे जाउन एखादा दिड आर सी + तंदुरी चिकन ( मस्तं असतं इथलं. आणि सध्या डायटवर असल्याने फक्त तंदुरी चिकन आणि फिश चालते. सध्या तंदुरी किंग फिश आहे ८०० रुपयांना ) हादडलं, की दिवस संपतो..

प्रवास वर्णन हे ज्याने प्रवास केलाय त्याच्या व्यतिरिक्त इतरांना खुप कंटाळवाणं होतं. पुलंची एक गोष्ट ऐकली होती.. त्यात दिलं होतं की लोकं प्रवास करुन येतात, आणि मग कोणी भेटला तर त्याला अगदी जवळ बसवुन ते फोटो दाखवुन कंटाळा येई पर्यंत माहिती सांगुन बोअर करतात. हे वाक्य इतकं पक्कं बसलंय मनात की मी प्रवास वर्णन कधिच लिहायचं नाही हे ठरवुन टाकलं. आणि आज पर्यंत तरी आपल्या निश्चया प्रमाणे लिहिलेलं नाही-पण पुढे लिहिणार नाही असंही नाही. ( पुलं नी तो लेख लिहिला होता, पण प्रवास वर्णनं पण लिहिली आहेत ..  )

आजचं पोस्ट हे पण प्रवास वर्णन नाही. मी वर जे लिहिलंय कि गोवा म्हंटलं की लोकांना काय आठवते ते.. माझं पोस्ट आहे गोवा म्हणजे माझ्या दृष्टीने काय आहे ते.. गेल्या कित्तेक वर्षात शेकडो वेळा गोव्याला आलो असेल. एक कलरफुल व्हायब्रंट शहर म्हणुन गोवा माझ्या मनात पक्कं बसलंय. इथले लोकं , इथले टुरिस्ट …सगळे कसे निरनिराळ्या रंगात रंगलेले दिसतात.

आता परदेशी टुरिस्ट चा विषय निघाला म्हणुन सांगतो. परवा कारवारहुन परत निघायला रात्रंच झाली. जवळपास ८ वाजले होते. रस्त्यावर दोन परदेशी तरुणी उभ्या होत्या- लिफ्ट मागंत. ड्रायव्हरला म्हंटलं, अरे थांबव .. इथे त्यांना रात्री काय साधन मिळणार? तर ड्रायव्हर म्हणाला, की या मुली रशियन टुरिस्ट व्हिसा खाली इथे येतात आणि देहविक्रयाचा धंदा करतात. मी क्षणभर आवाक झालॊ ऐकुन… कुठल्याही ऍंगलने त्या मुली तशा वाटंत नव्हत्या. ड्रायव्हर म्हणाला.. साब रातको फ्लाईट आता है रशियासे आनेवाला.. आनेके बाद इनको छोडने जाओ , तो बोलती है .. जो चाहिये कर लो. पैसा नहीं है…. !! काही गोष्टींवर विश्वास ठेवणं किती कठीण आहे नाही?? कलंगुट बीच पासुन २० किमी वर असलेल्या एका बीच जवळच्या हॉटेल्स वर या मुली रहातात. बऱ्याच लोकांनी तर तिथे घरं घेउन ठेवली आहेत भाड्याने.. असो… विषयांतर झालंय.. तो एक वेगळा विषय आहे…मुद्दाम त्य बीच चं नांव दिलेलं नाही इथे.. !

गोव्याला गेल्यावर एक गोष्ट लक्षात येते, ती म्हणजे इथल्या लोकांना रंगाचं असलेलं वेड. काय खरं वाटत नाही?  विमानातुन बाहेर आल्यावर एअर्पोर्टलाच काही गोवनीज लोकांचे पुतळे लावलेले आहेत ते बघा.. सगळ्यात मस्त म्हणजे स्मोकिंग रुम ( हो गोवा एअरपोर्टला स्मोकिंग रुम आहे, आणि बाहेर स्मोकिंग केल्यास शिक्षा पण होऊ शकते. ) जवळचा तो एक हुक्का पीणारा… मस्त आहे एकदम.. इथे पोस्ट करतोय बघा….

गोव्याला आलो की सगळी कडे हिरवळ .. तांदुळाची शेतं, आणि नारळाची झाडं. अधुन मधुन बॅक वॉटर.. प्रत्येक गोष्टीचा आपला स्वतःचा एक निराळाच रंग आहे. बरं हे रंग कमी आहेत म्हणुन गोव्याचे लोकं गोव्या मधे आणखिन जास्त रंग भरतात, आणि ते पण असे की “रंगात रंगुनी रंग माझा वेगळा” असे..  अख्ख्या भारतात पहायला मिळणार नाहीत अशा रंगात घरं रंगवलेली दिसतिल गोव्याला.

बरं हे रंग इथल्या गोव्याच्या स्वतःच्या रंगाशी इतके बेमालुम पणे मिसळून जातात, की ते गोव्याचा अविभाज्य अंग आहे असे वाटते. असं कुठेही वाटत नाही की हे घर ऑड मॅन आउट आहे म्हणुन.इथे कारवार च्या रस्त्यावर जातांना एक घर चक्क काळ्यारंगात रंगवलेलं दिसलं. त्याचा पण फोटो काढला होता, पण तेंव्हा कार चालत होती म्हणुन तो बिघडला.

नजरेला बोचणारा भडक गुलाबी रंग पण इथे घराला दिलेला दिसतो, पण याचं आश्चर्य वाटत की गोव्याला तोच रंग अजिबात बोचत नाही नजरेला.. उलट एक वेगळंच सुख देउन जातो.  पिवळा जर्द रंग असलेली घरं, इथेच दिसतिल , इथे घर कुठल्याही रंगाचं असो, त्याला एक दुसरा रंग कॉंबिनेशनमधे वापरलेला दिसेल. पिवळ्या बरोबर पांढरा तर अगदी कॉमन आहे. एखादा शॉकिंग पर्पल किंवा फ्लुरोसंट हिरवा पण घराला लावलेला दिसेल.

कांही जुनी पोर्तुगिझ घरं असे रंग ल्यायल्यावर नजरेला पर्वणी असते… या संपुर्ण पोस्ट मधे तुम्हाला माझ्या नजरेतुन गोवा दाखवतोय.. बरेच फोटो आहेत, पण जरा वेगळं पोस्ट म्हणुन जरा जास्त फोटॊ पोस्ट करतोय..आता पुढल्या वेळेस गोव्याला गेलात की ही रंगांची उधळण जरुर अनुभवा…

I’m loving the feeling of warmth in pieces like ear muffs and scarfs and big comfy coats and boots lately. Yeah, not as much as in rl, since I can still feel the cold but one of my favorite things is dressing accordingly to the seasons in sl. In winter I love seeing pixel snow and layering like a mad girl and in the summer..wear as less as I can..even though there’s exceptions here and here. So Antonia Marat’s contribution to fifty lindens friday just made my day. Couldn’t come in a better moment and it was all I needed to put this together and feel like a lil’ bear. Hope you have a great weekend!

Back in the swing of things! getting it all together. Now just trying to get through all the Madagascar shots so I can get them burnt onto DVDs and send them around the world.

Gekkonidae

So there are a LOT of geckos in Madagascar. 10 endemic genera even! That means a lot of diversity. I just wrote a 1500 word essay on their evolution, but I’ll try not to go into it. Basically, they’ve been isolated for some 90 million years. That means they are unlike anything anywhere else on the planet. They took up specialisms and went crazy, and there ensued the beauty of today’s species.

Hemidactylus platycephalus

This was the first gecko we saw on the whole trip. Upon consulting the edition of Glaw and Vences that I just received, it appears to be H. platycephalus, one of the only introduced species we saw.

Phelsuma grandis

This is one of the most common species in the north. They are on every banana tree. Most of you who know me will know what they look like, because I own one.

Phelsuma abbotti checkei

This is the other species of Phelsuma found in the same area of forest. They are less common and more shy, because they are much smaller.

Interestingly, the only other genus found in the actual forest where we were besides Phelsuma was the one that is supposedly the hardest to find, Uroplatus. I have a feeling there were other genera about, but that we never came across them because for the most part our eyes were upwards pointing.

There are two species of Uroplatus found in the dry deciduous forest in the north (from what we found). I am assuming that almost all of the species we found were U. henkeli, but I don’t really know, because the species recognition is extremely difficult.

I think this individual is actually a Uroplatus sikorae:

And that’s basically it from the geckos! Hope you enjoyed the heavy image load. These were basically what I went to Madagascar to see, and I got really really lucky. Unfortunately, there were no U. giganteus to be found, but we tried.

The next and quite possibly the final instalment from the Critters series is Birds. It’ll be short, but I got one of my favourite shots from a particularly cooperative birdy.
