worn
telling stories
from people
that know the meaning
of pain
and knots of hunger
gurgling up from
empty stomachs
on baseless plains
featureless, flat
swelling, breathing
with that human power
to see inside
finding beauty in nothing
and love from indifference
I was once a child of ignorance
so that now my false wisdom inflates my ego
so that no one can hear me
so that in my intellectual prism
I am but
a prisoner
in the chains of spoken words

I’d like to talk about an issue that I’ve seen come up a few times over the years that I think every

I’d like to talk about an issue that I’ve seen come up a few times over the years that I think every musician who is ever endeavoring to travel and work abroad might experience. Let’s take a musician and we’ll name him John Smith. Now John Smith lives in Ny and has been called to do a festival in London for a week. Now John’s going to be there for a week for only 1 gig. That leaves for a lot of downtime. John has plenty of musician friends in Europe, one of them being a pianist that lives in Paris who happens to be a real aggressive hustler for gigs and he’s successful at it. John calls the pianist (let called him Jacques for now) and lets him know that he’ll be in London for a week for a festival and that he has a few days free. Jacques has some good paying gigs lined up already in Paris and would like to have John on those.

Now here’s where it’s gets tricky. John agrees to do these gigs. The festival organizers in London have already spent 900+ dollars to fly John over the Atlantic to the gig. So now all Jacques needs to do is buy a round trip ticket for John from London to Paris, which is relatively inexpensive (certainly cheaper than footing the bill from NY to London and back). This is called piggybacking on the behalf of Jacques. Now Jacques is ethically obligated to compensate the organizers of the London gig for the initial flight from NY.
Over the years, festival organizers have really started to crack down on this. Most agents work in a network and they all talk to each other so they know who’s playing where. If two agencies are presenting the same act during the same tour for that act, they’ll share the cost of airfare, especially for the U.S. based bands playing abroad (the cost to bring over a quartet or quintet is very expensive and it’s killed every prospect of me bringing my band abroad anytime soon, so I gave up trying to find work for my band abroad). Most acts that perform abroad from the U.S. have to have an “anchor” gig(s) (a gig(s) that covers for the plane tickets) to have any chance of making a profit on the tour.

So for all musicians looking to work abroad, when you do find work please be honest if you are playing elsewhere during your stay if you are questioned about it. Our reputations rely on this…

Until next time,

(Above: Shot of a mural painted on the back of the Lenox-Camden housing development homes in the South End. Expect way better photos coming in the form of a slide show; this was from the reject pile.)

That’s right, love coming at ya. Sorry I’ve been removed the past couple days. This post will be action/content packed, and you’ll even get another one on top of this (huh, literally). Here’s a recap of what I’ve been up to:

Writing papers, studying for tests, tutoring, tweaking resumes, gritting my teeth at Big Baby plays (already! He hasn’t messed up like this yet though), attending panels (meeting a journalist I look up to/that’s influenced me), motivating friends, and when I have time – some NBA 2K10.

Here’s some highlights/in-depth analysis of my week (no play-by-play):

1) I took the photo at the top of this post while working on a project for my Online Journalism class (the inspiration behind this blog), Thursday. I went all around Jamaica Plain (Centre St.) and a slice of the South End (Tremont area) shooting street murals for a slide show (alliteration, owwww). It was really astounding how much art is just lying around Boston if you open your eyes. I even found a torn down Shepard Fairey piece on Tremont St. (seen below).

JP was especially cool; I love/know a decent amount of the neighborhood since I did an ethnography a sociology report there two years ago. Although, I was saddened to see a lot of small businesses close from the last time I hung out there. (I also became sad when I overheard two little kids brag about what they stole from Stop & Shop, I considered going all Davey and Goliath on them, but decided not to.) I browsed the shelves of The Video Underground for a bit, and it was nice to see them still going strong. They didn’t carry Interstella 5555, but my man Modi of DCtoBC held that down.

2) I had an exam in my Coltrane class on Thursday as well. It’s a great course on the life and musical legacy of John Coltrane (re-evaluate your life if you needed that link to inform you on who he is). Even though it’s only been 3 weeks, I definitely appreciate jazz more. We had a listening portion of the test which required you to identify some of his music. My dude Casby was nice enough to lend me his iPod Touch full of Coltrane tunes to prepare. I was digging one joint in particular, “My One and Only Love” (I’ve included a link to listen below).

But while flipping through Casby’s iPod I found one of the most crucial playlist ever. It was a mix of Cape Verdean music, a good portion of them old school jams. I’m 1/2 Cape Verdean, but don’t speak Creole, so I have fond memories of the music but can’t remember any song titles. It was great to reminisce and I felt like I was delving back into my childhood.

I’ve assembled a little bit of music from Cape Verdean singer Gil Semedo below, two certified classics. CV music is sort of hard to find on the net, probably because our biggest claim to fame is half Cape Verdean Amber Rose (Kanye West’s girlfriend). There needs to be a power CV blog/site/connecting resource for the community. If I spoke my language and was connected to my culture I would make one One day I’ll get around to creating one, I may not run it, but I’ll start and have others take care of it. *Adds to future goals list*

3) And of course, last but not least, I’ve been creating. (Been particularly inspired while listening to Skyzoo’s The Salvation album – I’ve included a track from that below.) Working on the mega project – the evolved form of this Mr. Martins blog. I had some great ideas, and am steadily building towards what will be be an epic launch/voyage/endeavor.
