That’s right, every single T-shirt is available for $20 each with flat rate shipping of $5. I have heard a few Homage related rumors this week. First is that Homage founder Ryan Vesler has joined the OSU Women’s basketball practice squad and the other is that Homage will have a pop-up booth inside the Schottenstein arena for all the OSU basketball home games. I hope they are both true.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! I sure have a lot to bet thankful for recently. Namely, I thank my ge

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

I sure have a lot to bet thankful for recently. Namely, I thank my genius brain for figuring out this system that has been consistently correct 70-80% of the time. And I’m thankful that it works for basketball, football, and hockey. I’m sure it works for baseball as well, but that’s going to have to wait another 6 months or so.

So today was yet another good day for me. I won all 3 3-team teasers (2 7pts and 1 4pt). I lost my 1 straight wager for the NBA by 1.5 points. That technically puts me at 9-1 for the day but since it was only 4 teams in the teasers I’ll call it 4-1. I was 5-0 SU on those games. As for the NHL, I went 2-1 which normally isn’t bad but I tried to parlay them so it didn’t really work out for me. I’m still happy with it since I made money on the day and I’m still learning.

I apologize for being a little disorganized lately, and my posts haven’t been too in-depth. I’m still working the kinks out of my system and trying to get everything running smoothly, all while working 40 hours and exercising 14 hours a week. It’s tough to fit it all in but once I get everything sorted out I’ll be able to do the dirty work more quickly and have more time to write good posts.

Also, I know I haven’t updated the other pages in a while. I’ll get to that this weekend. I promise.

Anyway, here are tomorrow’s NFL, NHL, and NBA picks for tomorrow.

GB VS DET; GB -11.5 (BOUGHT 2PTS)

Surprisingly this is my weakest game of the three. You wouldn’t think I’d need to buy any points but I am a slave to my system so I do what it says. Stafford looked good last week but remember who he was playing. And remember how many points the Browns scored on them.

OAK VS DAL; DAL -13.5

This game scares me a little just based on how Dallas has been playing lately. I’m hoping they’ll be able to take advantage of the Raider’s beaten defense as they didn’t get much rest since their last game. Obviously Dallas didn’t get much rest either but a short week is harder on the defense than it is on the offense. And I don’t think Oakland’s offense is good enough to really “take advantage” of Dallas.

NYG VS DEN; NYG -6.5

The Giants are back on their feet while the Broncos can’t even find theirs. Giants will keep rolling while the Broncos keep falling.

I also parlayed these games as my system says they are strong. I played them in a 6pt teaser as well to hopefully offset some losses if they don’t quite cover the spread.

NHL:

Columbus vs Ottowa

Los Angeles vs Vancouver

It looks like the 2 US teams will not be so thankful tomorrow as they both are travelling out of the country and both are going to lose. I’m playing this as a parlay as well.

NBA:

CHI vs UTA; UTA -3 (BOUGHT 4PTS)

This is the only game of 2 tomorrow that has a spread out right now and the only way I can play it is if I buy 4 points. I cannot do that on sportsbook.com unless it is part of a teaser (they only let me buy up to 3). If the other game isn’t good enough to use in a teaser I’ll probably just let it go.

I just wrapped up another successful assembly and the students were exiting the gym. At this time, there are always a few students that break away from their classes and come over to ask questions or make comments about the program. On this particular day, a determined kindergartner came up to me with a stern look in her eyes, and she stated “I’m going to the beach this weekend.”

I was a little perplexed at this moment, for we just completed an assembly about the human body and nutrition that ends with me blowing up a giant engine. But from my experience, I know that students will share the most random facts of their lives, so I didn’t take offense. Instead I simply respond with a little enthusiastic, “Well, that’s nice.”

She then proceed with an order, “You and that (she points to the giant engine) are coming with me.”

At this point, I was simply confused. For I have had students tell me some of the craziest thing, but I have never had a student command me to the beach before. As a result, I said the first thing that popped in my head in an attempt for clarification, “Excuse me.”

From these 2 words and probably the stun expression on my face the kindergartner realized, she has made an error in judgment, and in an instant I saw her change her plan of attack. All of the sudden, her stern determined look was replace with a smile and giggle. And in the softest sweetest tone and with as much politeness that she could mustard, she said “I apologize … will you and that (pointing to the giant engine) please accompany me to the beach this weekend?”

With a laugh in my heart, I politely decline. Later I regretted this decision for who doesn’t deserve a weekend at the beach.

I’m spending the week in the Washington, DC area—partly for meetings with national and international

I’m spending the week in the Washington, DC area—partly for meetings with national and international organizations that COSI is affiliated with and importantly to also play grandpa to our little Leah

When in DC, you hear about multiple governmental announcements and stories each day—it’s part of life “inside the beltway.” I was glad to be here though and getting detailed news about the President’s announcement of his Educate to Innovate initiative in partnership with multiple companies and organizations. The announcement was of import to us at COSI and other science centers as the initiative recognizes the power of support for science investigation and learning not only in the classroom but in community resources as well.

And the objectives expressed in this new initiative mirror exactly how we see our role at COSI, as highlighted in the following statement contained in President Obama’s comments at the White House:

Everyone in this room understands how important science and math can be. And it goes beyond the facts in a biology textbook or the questions on an algebra quiz. It’s about the ability to understand our world: to harness and train that human capacity to solve problems and think critically, a set of skills that informs the decisions we make throughout our lives. So, yes, improving education in math and science is about producing engineers and researchers and scientists and innovators who are going to help transform our economy and our lives for the better. But it’s also about something more. It’s about expanding opportunity for all Americans in a world where an education is the key to success. It’s about an informed citizenry in an era where many of the problems we face as a nation are, at root, scientific problems. And it’s about the power of science to not only unlock new discoveries, but to unlock in the minds of our young people a sense of promise, a sense that with some hard work—with effort—they have the potential to achieve extraordinary things.

A video of the President’s announcement is available here:

The partners in this initiative include Time Warner Cable, our new sponsor of after school programming and special monthly science days that COSI will implement with their support. In addition to what takes place in the classroom, there are so many learning opportunities with the often non-productive (even destructive) time children and youth have out-of-school. COSI and science center colleagues around the country are developing more partnerships with schools and others to bring our special opportunities, engagement with science and technology, and resources to play an increasing role.

Coincidentally, the same day as the Educate to Innovate announcement, the Wall Street Journal published a special CEO Council report. Several Columbus area CEO’s—Michael Morris of AEP, George Barrett of Cardinal Health, and James Hagedorn of Scotts Miracle-Gro Company were participants—all partners and supporters of COSI’s educational efforts. The group defined and discussed top national priorities. Interestingly, the group of 100 top CEO’s in the U.S. concluded that “Education is an urgent national priority—well ahead of health care, climate change and financial regulatory reform…”

Wow, that says something.

We are linking with more partners locally and nationally to expand and enhance what we can do to support lifelong learning—building on that special skill set we’ve developed of linking and engaging people with the wonders and power of science and technology. You can see the variety of ways in which we’re putting forth our efforts by scanning our web site. My time in DC is partly to expand and link that through national and international partnerships.

During this time of thanks, I’m thankful that at COSI we have the talent and resources to make a difference. The challenge at times is knowing where to focus.

What do you think are the most important areas of learning for COSI to focus on?

What do you see as COSI’s most important, maybe unique, strengths to bring to the national priority of a scientifically literate and comfortable society?

I think about these questions constantly with our team here—any thoughts are always appreciated.

The glass is half fuller. $26 million short of a full roster and they’re collecting 7 of 8 points. Out-classed by Columbus for ~40 minutes only to pull up their socks and pot 3 5-on-5 goals in the 3rd to win, again, in regulation. Price is poise. Cammalleri continuing his campaign for the captaincy, and even Bergeron looking like maybe he’s doing what they signed him for (5 goals in under 20 games is not bad for a D). Always liked Antoine Vermette. not as much as my wife, who has an all-out crush on him, but I do like him. Pleks is among the top 20 scoring leaders in the league. Last time a Hab was up there? Let’s see if the pens will take the team back down to earth tonight.

By the way, I think the Latendresse trade warranted a separate Habs-o-meter post, but didn’t have time. Shipping him added marginally to the Habs-o-meter climb—I wish him luck, but it was clear that he wasn’t filling a role on this team.

If you missed Part One: The Preparation, check it out here.

Nancy and Andre began their wedding day at St. James Lutheran Church in Hilliard. It was beautiful! This little church had so much character. It was perfect for the intimate ceremony that Nancy and Andre had. I said in Part One, that Nancy was the calmest bride I’ve ever come across. She was at peace and content that the day had finally arrived where she and Andre would be joined together forever. It’s not good for the wedding photographer to get emotional at the ceremony….but I couldn’t help myself!! I was so overwhelmed by the love and happiness between Andre and Nancy, their families and friends. Enjoy their photographs.

I LOVE the photograph of Nancy with her Kleenex. She kept one conveniently in her dress and whipped it out at just the right moment. Laughter all around!

Again, the emotion was powerful! I love that Nancy is giving her mom a big, bright smile. I’m pretty sure this is the point I started welling up!

Sarah Palin’s Magical Mavericky Tour made a stop in Columbus, Ohio this week. Needless to say, all of that city’s brain-dead nutcases stormed the local Borders Books in an attempt to meet and greet the former ex-quitting governor of Alaska. Words cannot describe however, the lack of intelligence on display at the book signing. There has never been a lesser informed group of people assembled in one public place since all of those zombies congregated at the shopping mall in the George Romero film, Dawn Of The Dead? Okay, perhaps there were more brain-dead zombies at Glenn Beck’s Tea-Bagger protest in Washington, DC, but we did not get as good a look at their individual stupidity at that event as we did in Columbus. Please watch the video clip below to get a good taste.

Duh, “She’s the epitome of conservative-ness.” Bwa-ha-ha-ha !!!

“She’s someone that can make a difference but I never thought about it.” Slapping knees with laughter!!!

“I don’t know what she knows or doesn’t know. I wouldn’t know half the things anyone would ask me.” Huh?

“The politically correctness has got to get out now.” Please stop, you’re killing me.

In honor of the troops, please click on the song link below to familiarize yourselves with the tune and to have more fun singing along with today’s topical song parody.

BRAIN DEAD IN OHIO

(sung to the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young song “Ohio”)

Tin helmuts and Palin’s slummin’
Intelligence bought on loan
To Borders these fools are comin’
Brain-dead in Ohio

Add a few clowns to it
Columbus is such a strange town
People that aren’t “in the know”
Went to meet Palin and
They made some mumbling sounds
And they forked over their dough

Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na

‘Nother small town blew it
By letting Palin hang ‘round
Should have realized long ago
Don’t even know her, yet
They feel she is profound
They’re as dumb as Plumber Joe

These morons see Palin comin’
They can’t wait to hear her drone
When she leaves they will be bummin’
Brain-dead in Ohio
Brain-dead in Ohio
Brain-dead in Ohio
Brain-dead in Ohio
Brain-dead in Ohio
Brain-dead in Ohio
Brain-dead in Ohio
Brain-dead in Ohio
Brain-dead in Ohio
Brain-dead in Ohio

It’s become “one of America’s great reality shows.” This, according to Peggy Drexler, author and ass

It’s become “one of America’s great reality shows.”

This, according to Peggy Drexler, author and assistant professor of psychology at Cornell University, is the life of Sarah Palin.

“Reality TV has a formula,” says Drexler. “One of the surprisingly numerous guides I found to selling a reality show said that the key is the right mix of four elements: talent, love, torment and sex. Others pointed out that the most important thing is letting people watch other people fail at something they desperately want to do.

“Studies show that American Idol loses a large segment of the audience after the ritual tortures of the early rounds. Another attraction, the guides point out, is spying on our neighbors without risking a restraining order. We don’t necessarily feel their pain. We just like to watch it.

“One of the best story lines is to yank people out of their normal lives, and throw them into unfamiliar situations — think wives swapping families. It’s even better when you do it to a C-list celebrity — think Paris Hilton shoveling manure.”

This “reality show” passed through my home town a few days ago. I wouldn’t even be mentioning it except for the video that showed up on YouTube of people waiting in line to get a glimpse of Palin outside a local Border’s Bookstore – twenty minutes away from my house.

That’s too close to home.

There was an interviewer on the scene asking people why they support Palin.

They were also asked about Palin’s views on issues and policies. Here’s a few gems.

There’s SO MUCH more. Here’s the whole video.

Let’s face it: you can’t fix stupid.

Drexler describes her reality show comparison. “We take a C-list first-term governor from a state with a population the size of the city of Charlotte. She’ll have this hot-for-teacher thing going on; tight skirts, high heels, hair tied up in a twist. She’s a huntin’, fishin’, scrappy hockey mom, who tells it like it is.

“She’ll have a pregnant daughter. She’s hot. She’ll have a hunky husband who doesn’t say much. He’s hot. The pregnant daughter will have a boyfriend. He and the mother say they love each other, but as the story line progresses, they hate each other. He’s hot, too — kind of a young Donny Osmond, but buff. They’ll all live in the same house.

Later she writes, “The boyfriend will make the cover of America’s leading liberal magazine, space usually reserved for stars, models and politicians.

“Just when the audience thinks it’s over, she’ll write a book, which will sell out before it’s published.”

Towards the end of the article, Drexler writes, “She won’t rule out running for president, which gives us a bridge to a second season. She’ll hug Oprah.”

Drexler closes by saying, “It’s great TV.” This is where Ms. Drexler and I part ways in our thinking. I am not a fan of reality shows. I doubt that I’ve seen even one, beginning to end. My idea of great TV includes well-written and acted scripts, great character development, talented actors and actresses, great music, good lighting and sound – the works.

The “Sarah Palin Show” is the anathema to great TV.

Sincerely,

www.MichaelKontras.com

PS1 – Deepak Chopra wrote an article on Palin recently called “Fooling None of the People, All of the Time.” I think he’s right.

PS2 – Martha Stewart was asked about Palin in this brief interview.

I’m not a huge fan of Martha’s, but I agree with her statements here.

It’s been quite a while but the time has arrived for my post about DDUB’s ”I Got It” release party. This is the story of why (and how) I managed to drive 600 miles in one day, party with DDUB, meet the cast of The Lion King and, get back to Pittsburgh in one piece.

When Donnie Wahlberg released the dates of his IGOTIT parties, Columbus Ohio seemed too close to ignore. We decided that we had to go for it and we even managed to convince Maria to go! At first I did not realize that Columbus was 3 1/2 hours away from Pittsburgh but it really didn’t matter, a mid-week trip to see Donnie is ALWAYS a good idea!

The itinerary was confusing, the day was going to push me and we were excited. The first step was driving to Grove City to pick Maria up. 69 miles Then back to Pittsburgh to pick up Lauren and the essential Turners beverages. 69 miles

Loading the car with booze, iced tea, fake hair, stilettos, CD’s and makeup. Phone call from Mom to inform me that Dad was cutting the grass. (Clearly vital information that I needed to know while on my trip.) Then we were ready to drive from Pittsburgh to Columbus! 185 miles.

Things started out well. Frankenstein was using his scary boney hand and pointing us in the right direction. We had NKOTB on the stereo. We had more jewelry than Mr T or Joey McIntyre. It was a nice drive. Good scenery.

We made it quickly through West Virginia and into the state I wish we could give back to whoever we stole it from. I’m even willing to throw New Jersey in for a buy one get one deal. Countries interested, please inquire within. Anywho, I had already been driving for hours on end and things were getting more rural by the minute.

Eventually I stopped rapping to Nelly and pulled over for gas in the middle of Swaboda, Ohio. Not really sure what the name of that crazy little dusty town was but there were strange large trucks in a truckstop. I didn’t want to stay there too long. However, while Maria was buying fried chicken at the register inside, we found out that the next exit was fully stocked with McDonald’s, Wendy’s, Subway and any other non-horror movie restaurant that you could think of.

So we packed up our wagons and moved on down the road to the next stop. Judging by our mileage we knew we were pretty close to Columbus and we thought it best to get ready at McDonald’s instead of in my car in a parking garage. We scarfed some food, lugged our bags inside and prepared ourselves for meeting Donnie. (Read: Tips for Getting Hooch-ified in a McDonald’s) We premixed our victory drinks and loaded back up.

Finally we were on the last leg of the journey and we were bound for Columbus. For one reason or another, Frankenstein aka Nora the Explorer aka our GPS system did not believe that Sugar Bar existed. Nor did the street it was on according to FranoraGPS. So now, I was mapquesting the directions from my Blackberry while driving in the dark, in a place I’ve never been before.

Once into the city (and after taking a side trip to the White Castle headquarters) we quickly found the line of people standing outside and then scrambled for a parking spot. I found a parking garage and whipped the Buick into the first available spot. Then it was time to finish our makeup, spray the perfume and down the beverages.

After that much travel, apparently my sense of direction disappears and we started to walk the opposite direction in search of warmth and the Sugar Bar. I should have brought backup shoes because the 4 inch shoes I packed were not cooperating. Three sips into my adult beverage I fell and managed to rip the hole in my preripped jeans and scrape my knee. Luckily I was too cold to feel pain.

Then we asked a cab driver for directions to the bar, he provided them without ever looking away from Maria’s chest. We retreated to the correct location and got our spots in line.

Since this blog is turning into a massive book, I’ll summarize the driving part by saying that we stayed at the Sugar Bar until around 1 when my feet were numb and my hair was a matted disaster. Then we hoped into the car and headed back immediately.

There was no stopping on the way home. We had gas, food was overrated and the roads were clear. The music was blasting, our bladders were exploding and I managed to be back in my bed 23 hours after I had left and 10 minutes before my alarm went off. I then got back into my car and drove over my alarm until it was nothing but tiny, tiny pieces of plastic under my tires. 185 miles

The DDUB details follow in other posts…..

They catch up with Sarah Palin fans standing outside of Borders Books & Music in Columbus, OH. The reporters asks them why they like Sarah Palin, how they feel about her policies, and what they think about the country under President Obama. Lets just say the interviews are very interesting….and that these fans have the Fox News soundbites down cold.

Brief personal hockey background: I played hockey for 6 years when I was in elementary school, until

Brief personal hockey background: I played hockey for 6 years when I was in elementary school, until I was considered too small to move up to the next age division (Although I’m 5′8″ now, I didn’t break 5′ until summer after 8th grade. I weighed 70 lbs in 7th grade). I paid attention to the NHL in elementary school when I played but once I stopped playing I stopped paying attention. I tried getting back into it about 5 years ago but that only lasted for a season as it was difficult to follow it in an area with no pro hockey teams and no games shown on TV.

In essence, what I’m trying to say is I love hockey, I know the sport and the teams, but I’m not current on who is good, who is bad, the best players, etc. It shouldn’t take me long to catch back up though.

The main reason I’m getting back into it now is I believe my NBA system works on the NHL as well. I tested it on yesterday’s games and it went 8-2 without even having GF play limits set. (For NBA games, I have a GFN play limit set at 9. If the GFN is below 9 I don’t play the game. GFN for the NFL is 4 right now that that has given it a 5-2 record). Obviously that’s not a big backtest but it was good enough for me to try playing today’s game (since today’s GFN was pretty solid for it). So here it is.

By the way, it’s best to play the moneylines on NHL games and that so that is what my system is measuring instead of the spread. That is what I’m actually playing.

Columbus vs Montreal; Columbus +1.5, u-5.5

I had the pleasure of photographing one of the sweetest little girls along with her mommy and daddy. Hayden loves shoes and accessories almost as much as I do (my kinda girl!). We played in her house and outside at a nearby park. She was very energetic and so happy! Her house is full of love and I felt very honored to be there and to capture some of it on camera.

Hayden has the brightest little smile!

The one above is my favorite family photograph. We were about to walk out the door when I snapped this…turned out perfect! And unplanned!

Again, that hat just makes the picture…not to mention her sweet little expression.
