Do you want the good Kathy Griffin news first, or the bad Kathy Griffin news?

We’ll start with the bad … Kathy was set to host a show on ABC called Let’s Dance.  Turns out, no one wanted to dance, not even D-list celebs, so the show isn’t going to happen.  Moving on.

Now for the good news … My Life On The D-List will be coming back for another seasonon Bravo.  Season 6 will have 10 episodes, and it’s going to start filming in January.  And around the same time, Kathy is set to guest star on Law and Order: SVU.  Seriously.  With any luck, we’ll get a peek behind the scenes of filming.

With the production and publication of his so-called “documentary” Good Hair, Chris Rock has violated a carnal rule that many classy black people observe:

Keep it in the family.

It was revealed on October 7, 2009 that Rock’s claim to have gotten the idea for this “documentary” (which I will from this point on refer to as a “mockumentary”) from his daughter was a load of BuckandShuck.

In fact he was low down enough to steal the idea from an independent black female filmmaker named Regina Kimbell (see “Chris Rock sued over Good Hair film”). She showed her film at colleges and film festivals starting in 2006.

Kimbell had the right idea–she didn’t want her documentary on black women’s hair to be broadcast for all white people to see and to “marvel” at what black women do to their hair in a movie theater. She kept it in the family on a low scale and advertised it to the people who could really use this information.

Rock has chosen to advertise this mockumentary to mainstream white America. Does this sound right? Why exactly?

Why in the world does Joe or Suzy Smith of Anytown, White America need to have this information about black women’s hair? Other than to have a good old laugh at our expense?

Lord knows how some ignorant white people, even in 2009, can’t pass up the opportunity to have a chuckle at the expense of blacks. I was in the movies watching “Inglorious Basterds” a few weeks ago. Some young white kids all but hee-hawed when the Nazi “basterd” made a snarky comment about how “American Olympic gold can be measured in Negro sweat.”

So imagine the good old time the young good old boys (and girls) will have when they see black women on screen hating their hair, throwing weave in it, and getting joked on by Chris “The Coon” Rock. The man who is most notorious in the black community for playing “Pookie” in New Jack City (see it here)

Simply put, issues of black hair are not the business of white men and women.

It’s an Agenda

Classy black ladies, don’t be fooled. This is part of an agenda.

I strongly believe that Chris Rock produced this movie in the mainstream as a way to make black women look undesirable to all men, due to the increase of black women who now date outside of their race. For some reason he seems to have a deep-seeded hatred of classy black women, as evidenced by his comments about Mrs. Obama in his poorly rated comedy show “To Kill a Mockingbird” (see it here starting at 4:40).

How dare we black women attempt to date anyone but black men. After all black men are the only ones who understand why some black women add weave to their hair. I guess he felt the need to somehow “warn” non-black men against dating us because of our “complicated hair.” Po’ us.

He tells the world, not just in the movie, but in countless trailers, that you can’t put your hand through a black woman’s hair.

What an ignorant and untrue generalization. Many black women don’t wear weave. We love for our men to run fingers through our hair. It’s warm and soft in there.

Rock even has a few black people in the movie, both male and female, to back his case up. They were probably so excited to be in a movie that they didn’t have the time to really think about the gravity of their statements.

Stereotypes

This issue of black women and hair is particularly sensitive to me because of an argument that I got into with a white male colleague on this very issue. He had the nerve to  state that most black women wear weaves (among some other very ignorant comments). Yes, a white man.

I told him he was completely wrong and out of line. Out of all of my black female friends and close acquaintances (probably about 50), only one or two wears a weave.

I’m sure that today he’s just nodding his head saying “I told you so” in this mind after seeing the trailers for this ignorant Good Hair movie.

Not to mention that now black women all over America will have to go into work on Monday and have to deal with silly white people who saw the movie and will ask if it’s okay to ask to “touch” their hair to see what it feels like. BIG SIGH.

Parallels in the White Female, White Male and Black Male Community

To understand the absurdity and pointlessness of this mockumentary, we can liken it to Dane Cook doing a documentary on why white women burn their skin in the sun and tanning beds to look as dark as possible.

Why white women inject their lips and butts with collagen to look more like black women.

Why white women put weave in their heads, ala Jessica Simpson, to improve their looks. Oftentimes their hair is hard to manage, shorter, and thin, prompting them to wear weave the same as some black women do.

How do you think white women would feel about Dane Cook, a white man, exposing their flaws and issues on the big screen?

What about if Kathy Griffin came out with a documentary on why many white men use penis enlargement products? An exploration of how much money white men spend on penile pumpers and pills?

To take it to another level, imagine if the comedienne Monique did a profile on why so many black men don’t take care of their children?

Why over 2 million of Chris Rock’s black brothers are in prison? (About 10% of black men are in prison as compared to 1% of white men–see http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0881455.html)

What about why many black men are on the DL?

Then Monique could release the “documentary,” making black men look like sad, sorry, irresponsible fools, in a theater near you. Does that sound right?

For Shame

Shame on you Oprah, Tyra Banks, Wendy Williams, and all other black female talk show hosts who have had this buffoon on your television shows. He is degrading you to your face, yet still you choose to help him publicize this embarrassing film.

Shame on you Meghan Good and Nia Long for allowing him to use your images on commercials to sell this mockumentary to the masses. “You don’t touch a black woman’s hair…” SPEAK FOR YOURSELF Nia and Meg. I love for a man I’m dating to touch my real hair and run his fingers right on through it. You don’t talk for all black women.

I would say shame on you to Chris Rock, but in my opinion he is not a part of “us” anymore. He is not family. He has completely sold out to the white entertainment establishment by publicizing a movie that attempts to degrade and humiliate black women. He is no better than the Wayans brothers at this point.

So instead I just say “good riddance” to Chris Rock. You are an enemy of classy black ladies all over the world.

Karma comes back around Chris.

On this morning’s “The Doctors” they showed a video clip of a child laughing hysterically every time he ripped a piece of paper from a magazine. Apparently this video clip has gotten 17 million hits on the Internet. I have to admit, that watching the clip is infectious. It’s here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cXXm696UbKY  and at this point actually, Youtube says it’s over 25 million hits. It really is adorable.

There was actually precious little solid information about laughter in the segment. What there was amounted to Dr. Travis Stork’s: “Did you know that children laugh up to 400 times a day and we as adults only do it 6 to 8 times?”…and this…”Laughter is good medicine. Some people say it adds 8 years to your life, I’m not sure how they know that, but laughter is free. Do it as much as you can. Life is short.”

The show features four doctors talking about all sorts of medical issues from the life-threatening to the silly, sometimes using demonstrations; and they field questions from the audience to wrap things up.

You’d think Dr. Travis STORK was the pediatric specialist of the foursome, but no that would be Dr. Jim Sears. They also have a plastic surgeon, Dr. Drew Ordon, and a gynecologist, Dr. Lisa Masterson. Dr. Masterson is an alien among us. Clearly she is a member of an alien race that has taken up residence among the human race. Take a look at her. She’s attractive, but there’s just something about her. The eyes. See how far apart they are? She didn’t get it quite right, and thus to the discerning eye on the lookout for space aliens who have ingratiated themselves to earthlings, here is an example. She’s slipped in unnoticed like some sort of galactic witness protection program–and the way she cooly assesses the other doctors and the patients on the show…it’s as though she’s gathering data on our behavior all the while expertly maintaining an unflinching nonjudgmental exterior.

According to a March 1993 Mayo Clinic Health Letter, laughter aids breathing by disrupting the normal respiration pattern and increasing the breathing rate. It even helps clear mucus from the lungs. Laughter is also good for the heart, increasing circulation and improving the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to tissues throughout your body. A good laugh helps your immune system fight off colds, flu and sinus problems by increasing the concentration of immunoglobulin A in your saliva. And may possibly help control pain by raising the levels of certain brain chemicals like endorphins. Furthermore, it is a natural stress reliever.

Here’s a case of someone NOT laughing, or at least not laughing anymore when they previously used to laugh. Comedienne Sunda Croonquist’s in-laws are suing her because of the jokes that she has told in her act about them. The lawsuit, brought by mother-in-law Ruth Zafrin and her daughter Shelley Edelman, and Edelman’s husband Neil, alleges that Ms. Croonquist made false, defamatory, and racist jokes about them. 

They demand that Croonquist remove the offensive statements from her website, comedy routines, and recordings, to which Croonquist responds that she will drop the jokes from her comedy routine, but will definitely not pay any monetary damages.  The lawsuit is scheduled for a hearing on September 8th, while Croonquist’s attorney has filed a motion to dismiss.

I’m a little bit suspicious since by everyone’s admission the whole family, in-laws and all had been attending her shows, and laughing for many years. Even when those shows included jokes about them. Could this all be a publicity stunt for Ms. Croonquist?

Supposedly what makes the difference this time is that she has posted information on her website that makes Ms. Zafrin’s identity open to the public.

“They have laughed at the act before and now it has come to this” a Good Day New York interviewer pointing out, adding that Ms. Sunda’s mother-in-law, Ruth refused to be interviewed for the segment.

“How is she?” Sunda chimed in, “She’s single by the way, if anyone’s interested.”

Ms. Croonquist is biracial: her father is Swedish and her mother African-American. He mother-in-law is Jewish, but Croonquist points out that she is obviously not anti-Semitic because she converted to Judaism before even meeting her Jewish husband.  Her routines examine cultural differences and subtle racism in her husband’s family. There was one incident for instance when she met her future mother-in-law for the first time and Ruth Zafrin loudly told someone to hide her purse. And upon her future sister-in-law’s first meeting Sunda, Shelley Edelman said loudly within earshot, “She’s got light hair and light eyes. What kind of black person is she?” Croonquist imitates her mother-in-law’s accent regularly in her act and describes her sister-in-law’s Jersey twang as something like a cat in heat.

According to Joel Goodman, director of The Humor Project, Inc., people should laugh at least 15 times a day to stay healthy. A good hearty laugh he concurs, increases a body’s respiration and circulation, which strengthens the heart and keeps the blood pressure in check. It also bolsters your immune system and suppresses stress hormones.

So…this is a joke, right?

Sunda Croonquist, a comedienne from New Jersey, is being sued by her mother-in-law for jokes she has told about her in her act. Apparently Croonquist has been doing this sort of thing for years, but of late, information posted on her website has made it easier for folks to figure out exactly who the oft-joked about mother-in-law is. And she’s had enough.

Now…I’ve never heard of Sundra Croonquist (although with that last name, I can see why she went into comedy). And she seems moderately funny in the footage of her act and in the interviews I have now seen due to the publicized lawsuit.

But I have to believe that this is just a publicity stunt. Heck, it’s a good idea. If you are a comedian — or comedienne, in this case — who has been working the circuit for a while with little national exposure, why not fashion a reality show-esque moment that will pull the TV cameras your way? (Her husband is a lawyer…it’s not that far-fetched that they might have brewed up this idea at home.)

So, before we shed any tears that this situation is tearing their poor family apart, let’s consider if the courts, the media, and we, the eager viewing public, are possibly being used to help Sunda Croonquist’s career.

That’s just not funny.
