Joi am fost for the first time la Comedy.show.

     * Mai multe informatii despre ei ,despre bilete, rezervari si cum ajungeti in La Scena, gasiti pe site-ul Comedy.show.

A few months ago, I bought tickets for a show for a date night for my husband and myself. Our date

A few months ago, I bought tickets for a show for a date night for my husband and myself. Our date nights are few and far between, and we were both looking forward to this show last night. But with my aunt’s death early yesterday morning, we weren’t sure if it was appropriate to go or not. Does one go to a humorous show on the day a loved one has died? But, we knew my aunt was in heaven, we knew she loved to laugh, and we knew that if we could ask her what to do, she would say, “Go to the show!”

So, we went. And we had a marvelous time.

What was the show? We watched John Cleese, of Monty Python fame, perform a one-man show consisting of him telling stories about his life in comedy television. The show was held in the Fox Theater in downtown Redwood City, an old historical landmark theater. JJ and I went early and had supper at a fabulous little Italian restaurant about two blocks from the theater. It was a good thing we did, because when we came out and walked to the theater, the line to get into the show stretched for two blocks in the other direction! If we had been trying to park right before the show, we would have had to park quite a distance away. We were both pleased about that. And the food was wonderful at the restaurant!

The show itself was — hilarious!! We laughed and laughed. Apparently, John Cleese and his wife recently divorced VERY unamicably. He has to pay her $20 million, leaving her richer than him! He talked about this at the beginning of the show, explaining to the audience that he’s doing these shows simply because he “needs the money.” After spending a little time hilariously ripping on his ex-wife (and her lawyer), he began to talk also hilariously about his childhood, his early years in TV, his time with Monty Python, his award-winning show Fawlty Towers, and a bit about the movie he wrote “A Fish Called Wanda.” He wore a simple pair of jeans with a collared yellow shirt and a jacket, and the props on the stage consisted merely of a small table and chair with a glass and water pitcher on the table, a podium on the side of the stage, and a projection screen hanging in the middle, onto which various pictures were shown that connected to what he was talking about.

Here are a few interesting/funny highlights that I can remember from the show:

When he was ranting about how much he has to pay his wife in his divorce settlement, he mentioned various female celebrities and how often he could have married and divorced them and paid them settlements that would have equaled the $20 million. He said something to the effect of this: “I could have married Pamela Anderson 2 and 1/3 times. I could have married _____ 3.4 times. I could have married this woman from Fremont (and he showed a picture of some minimally attractive woman) 200 times.” – except that he couldn’t get out the end of the joke because he was laughing so hard at the picture of the woman from “Fremont” [a city right across the Bay]. It was hysterically funny, especially because Cleese was buckled over laughing himself. It was SO funny!

He was the only child of his parents, born after they had been married 13 years. They hadn’t been planning to have children, so John’s arrival was a bit of a surprise.

He made the joke that he was born to parents who were “poor, but honest – the worst kind of childhood of all.” The way he said it was so funny!

He made a lot of jokes about his childhood hometown of Weston-Super-Mare, in England. He said it was a town where absolutely nothing ever happened. However, it did get bombed in WWII; Cleese said the Germans bombed it simply to prove that they had a sense of humor.

When Cleese graduated from high school, he applied and was accepted to Cambridge. However, for some reason there was a glut of graduates (I forget why), so he had to wait two years until it was his turn to enter Cambridge. During those two years, he was offered a position teaching 10 year old boys at his old elementary school, and he took the job.

He met Graham Chapman at Cambridge, and they were doing comedy together almost from the start. Cleese studied to become a lawyer.

He somehow (I forget how) ended up in a musical on Broadway right after his college graduation, even though he couldn’t sing a note. Under order from the music director, he mimed the words along with the rest of the men in the chorus. One night when he did try to sing along a bit, the music director noticed and sternly reminded him after the show, “No singing!”

Recently he asked his fellow Pythons what their favorite “silly” scene from the “Flying Circus” shows was, the the unanimous choice was the fish slapping scene.

The “Black Knight” scene in the movie “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” (the one where Arthur lops off the arms and then the legs of the Black Knight, even as the Knight refuses to acknowledge defeat) was one that every producer of the movie wanted to take out. However, when the movie was shown to preview audiences, that invariably was one of the people’s favorite scenes, so it stayed in.

Michael Palin can make Cleese laugh more than anyone. Cleese shared a story of the time the Pythons were performing live in the Hollywood Bowl, and Palin changed a line in the “Dead Parrot” sketch, which completely cracked Cleese up. He was laughing so hard he couldn’t remember his lines, and when it was his turn for a line, he turned to the Hollywood Bowl audience, who filled in the lines for him.

Cleese is apparently very anti-marketing and anti-political correctness. Every time he mentioned marketers, he loudly spat onto the floor. He also said that political correctness has ruined a lot of good comedy.

In the lobby, there were T-shirts for sale that said “I Saw John Cleese Perform” on the front, and on the back of the shirt it said “Just Before He Died.” JJ and I thought those were pretty funny. Other T-shirts for sale had silhouette images of Cleese in various poses of his “silly walks,” and on the back it said “Alimony Tour – Year One.” There were also autographed hats that said, “What Would JC do?” It was all very funny.

At the end of the show, when his “time was up,” he took a few questions from the audience. There was a microphone ready on one side of the floor, and people lined up in the aisle to ask him a question. He took about 5-6 questions, and they were all good questions from people who were much bigger Python fans than I am. But one of the questions I remember: Someone asked about the PC-ness of the song “Never Be Rude to an Arab.” It made me go home and dig out my Monty Python Instant Record Collection CD and listen to that song; it is most definitely NOT a politically correct song!

All in all, it was a really fun evening, and it has made me want to dig out my video of “The Life of Brian” and watch it again. I’ve also never watched “The Meaning of Life” after an aborted attempt with a friend in high school; maybe I’ll give it a try again. I know it’s full of black humor, but perhaps it will strike me a little differently now. Our local PBS station also often plays old episodes of “Monty Python’s Flying Circus” — I’ll probably watch those a little more closely, too.

It was fun to get out, fun to go to something that made us laugh, and it was just fun to see a famous person — in person! At the very end of the show, Cleese mentioned that he recently moved to an apartment in San Francisco, so who knows? Maybe he’ll be around in this area a little more. Then again, I know a number of other celebrities live in SF, too, and I never see them either. I’m not one who moves in celebrity-ridden circles, you know.

Nash sleeps in my bed one night in six month’s, and now he thinks it is his bed. Last night he got into my bed hours before I was going to sleep, it was like he was positioning himself, and saying hey buddy, first come first position. At about 9pm he got into the bed, and spread out all over the bed. He did get out of the bed later, and we played for a little, then went for his late evening walk, but as soon as we got back to the apartment, he darted back into the bed, and I know I am blind, but I could swear he had an evil smirk on his face. I was still up for a bit, and Nash was camped out in my bed. Finally I was ready to go to bed, and as usual, I was afraid to look at the clock, because if I don’t know what time it is, then I am really not up that late. I had to put my comferter back on my bed, and I flung it all over the bed, and over Nash, and he didn’t budge. I decided to sit on the couch, and watch a little more tv, and Nash just camped out underneath the blankie. It was like he was in a cool little fort, or camping out in a tent. Finally, I wanted to get into bed, and I didn’t want Nash to get all fidgety while I was asleep so I got him to come out from underneath the blanket, and he repositioned himself on top of it. He was kind enough to move over when I got into bed, but then he started running all around me, and was standing over me, and I’m like, sorry dude this isn’t going to work. He was then standing on my right, and was standing on the cliff of the bed, and I’m trying to tell him to go to the other side. I even tried picking him up to move him to my left with no luck. Eventually, he understood, and crashed out on top of me a little on my left. I thought when I got a guide dog that I would tell him what to do, but I think even after six month’s we are still trying to determine who the boss is. Even though it is only three in the afternoon, I am thinking about getting into bed, hey, I got to get my spot for tongith before Nash gets his!

8pm @ The Bath House Cultural Center

My Sister in This House, which often echoes Jean Genet’s The Maids, is based on an actual incident that took place in the French town of Le Mans, France in the early 1930s. It centers on the lives of Christine and Lea, two servant sisters attached to the Danzard household. The Danzards’, mother and daughter, are models of petit bourgeois idleness and severity. While suffocating under the weight of the Danzards’ authority and the rigid lines of class distinction, Christine and Lea have only each other to cling to. This pressure cooker atmosphere – part psychological study and part thriller – results in a haunting and stunning emotional explosion.

Betty's, worth travelling east of Yonge. Hoegarden. haha. As a low-key belated birthday celebrat

Betty's, worth travelling east of Yonge. Hoegarden. haha.

As a low-key belated birthday celebration, my sister V invited her friends to a Wednesday evening comedy show at Betty’s on King (240 King Street East). Betty’s is a cute and casual local bar in close proximity to the converted warehouse spaces of St. Lawrence Market; this is called home to many a Bay Streeter and East End Hipster (moderate to high hottie quotient because y’know when there’s beer, there’s boys to be found). Every Wednesday night, Corktown Comedy hosts a free show on the 2nd floor featuring an open-mic lineup of amateur to professional local and foreign jokesters that test out material or kill the crowd with improv.

Here are my knee-slap funny highlights of the evening:

Beer trivia – The host of the evening Brian Coughlin cajoles with the crowd and offers free beer if he’s in a good mood. If you’re a pretty girl in the front row, you might get a free cocktail on the house. Mmm, drinks taste so much better when they’re free.

Ron Josol – This Filipino kid has been killing me with comedy since I was a tween. Ron is a local talent who performs comedy professionally around the world. You could tell he was a real pro because he didn’t lose his cool when he blanked on his jokes.

Uncensored and uncut – This ain’t no Yuk-Yuk’s. If you don’t like foul language, it’s best to call it a night and tuck in early. If you haven’t heard every cuss word in the dictionary, this will be a true education.

Sketch – Gay sex jokes, unapologetic ethnic observations, overzealous hipsters that haven’t been laid in a longx3 time and ex-girlfriends that would ‘do anything’ in the bedroom. Everything is fair game.

The Catman – Quote of the evening: “I ordered chicken. I gave my cats the dark meat and I had the white meat.” At which point L puts her head on a table to silent laugh in spasms and I lose it. We probably laughed the hardest because it was the most random statement ever.

Awk-ward Moments - Self-deprecation saves the day. “So that joke died. I’m just gonna walk off stage now.”

Paul Reuben appeared on Jay Leno to have a chat about his sex addiction and the new Pee Wee Herman show coming back (no pun). Pee Wee’s also on Twitter @peeweeherman and already racked in 10,000 followers. On the show, He states it has new material as well as the classic Pee Wee Herman many grew to love from the 80’s. Paul Reuben suddenly stopped the show after a successful run during Saturday Cartoon Time slots, when he was caught in a movie theater exposing himself. He took the charge and landed a few roles in movies that were kinda rough around the edges, such as a marijuana dealer in blow, compared to Pee Wee’s Big Adventure with the cute “inspector gadget-type” bike. Them were the good ole’ movies with no one brave enough to take that same role today, lol. Thanks for reading, comeback for more trendz and look around for popular post.

Today for Dorians I have a choir retreat at a church in Tacoma. I think it’s just us socializing, eating, and hanging out. We might sing a little, but I don’t know if we will get around to it. It goes from 1-5 this afternoon, but I’m in a car that is leaving early so I might only be there until 4:30. We’ll see. I’m looking forward to it because I think it will be good bonding time with the rest of the girls. We need that if we want to work as a cohesive ensemble. Plus I like making friends. Weird I know, but sometimes I want to be social. Anyways, just wanted to say what I was doing. Also, I really do have to write my paper. I didn’t last night because I went to a student run improv comedy show. It was really good! They were super funny!

I should never drink. I talk too much and cry too often. Everything was great last night. I got high

I should never drink. I talk too much and cry too often. Everything was great last night. I got high and a little drunk before the comedy show, got exceptionally drunker and higher afterwards and went to a cast after party, which was great. Jan and I got to talking. Jan is Addy’s roommate. I have a crush on her. She has a boyfriend. I’m in a state where I can’t do anything. So we both do nothing. Anyway.

We’re sitting outside the party talking and some other people are listening, whatever. The conversation gets more intense and more personally and leads to me crying in front of Joss (which is a dorm by the way) with people moving to and fro. And then we walk a little further, she tells me:

“God, you….If I didn’t have a boyfriend….” I didn’t hear the rest of what she said or don’t remember it, but either way it was sexual. And then there was more VERY revealing talk. I cried, i think I made her cry at one point. Yes I think she cried when I told her how I thought about killing myself on Thursday night, the whimpy slow way with my 12 anti-depressant pills that have been building up since I stopped taking them. She begged me, told about the beautiful things in life, the beautiful things in life.

Yes, I know these things. I don’t need to be told them. I love and recall the happy moments. And there are moments where I am blissfully happy. And then sometimes, I get tired of trying so hard. Being myself every day takes so much more effort, so many more choices. And of course I falter, because I have no idea if I’m actually “being myself” or just pretending.

Why do I do this to people? Ambush them with my baggage and dirty laundry? How do I still have friends?

And why is it that everyone knows my name and thinks I’m hot? Stop it, Vassar College. Back off.

Pretty please, with sugar on top?

I love to laugh, and whenever I get an opportunity to – I take it. The Real Heavy Weight Comed

I love to laugh, and whenever I get an opportunity to – I take it. The Real Heavy Weight Comedy Jam is coming for one night only. On the 26 September at Emperors Palace, the laughs start. The lineup looks good and after reading through some of the comedians profiles on the 94.7 website I am convinced that it is going to be awesome.

The Real Heavy Weight Comedy Jam

You can get your tickets from Computicket, if they are not already sold out. I should also just warn our younger audience that the age restriction is PG16. One of the acts I am looking forward to is Starship Improvise, they do a “whose line is it anyway”, using suggestions from the audience.

Anyway, check it out for yourself, all the info is on highveld.co.za there is even some old video footage of Chris Forrest, David Kau and Conrad Koch – gives you a laugh to get you going.

Insider Out.
