Speaking at a Nesta panel this morning in London, Twitter co-founder Biz Stone stated that long-rumored premium corporate accounts for the most popular microblogging service will come by year’s end.

Although business accounts have long been a source of speculation for the site’s monetization plans, it’s not true that all business accounts will be charged for using the service. Instead, the premium accounts will feature additional analytics data and enhanced features.

Back in August, they said they were in the first phases of rolling out these accounts.

Also on the panel, celebritwit Stephen Fry criticized the move. According to Clickz:

He . . . said he didn’t intend to be “anti-commercial,” but that if Twitter becomes “annoying to users” and there was “a sense of being guided by a big corporate brother,” the company risks alienating its user base.

Which, of course, is a good point. Fry also asked about the possibility of display ads (specifically annoying banners), which Stone dismissed: “the plan has always been to create a [revenue] model that would be native to Twitter.”

Additionally, economic concerns, coupled with the focus on health care reform, will likely mean more fines in the health insurance sector, she said.

?Health insurers are under rigorous scrutiny and state regulators are working hard to show that they are policing those under their jurisdiction and protecting the consumer,? Donovan said. ?As a result of state action, we?re seeing insurers make changes that benefit the consumer, such as trying to minimize the swelling ranks of the uninsured by changing eligibility requirements in health insurance policies.?

Kevin Byrne, senior regulatory consultant at Wolters Kluwer Financial Services, says the struggling U.S. economy has also elevated internal fraud threat concerns, since tough economic times can cause more employees at financial institutions to resort to fraud on top of the financial crimes already being committed against an institution by outsiders.

?The stakes are high for institutions since an employee with inside knowledge of the firm?s workings can drain tens, if not hundreds of thousands of dollars from legitimate customer accounts in a very short time,? said Byrne. ?Many institutions are starting to realize that by investing in the people and technology up-front to stop internal and external fraud losses before they occur, they can actually improve their bottom line in the long run.?

Byrne said that as part of these efforts, some institutions are beginning to connect their anti-fraud and anti-money laundering investigation units. In doing so, he says both have access to more up-to-date customer information that they need to do their jobs more effectively.

The Obama Administration?s latest actions lend themselves to an atmosphere of legislative competition, says Edward Kramer, EVP of regulatory programs at Wolters Kluwer Financial Services. ?There is a race in Washington D.C. right now. It?s a race by legislators and regulators to see who can do more to protect the American consumer.?

One of the leading consumer protection topics is privacy, and securities and banking industry regulators have even teamed up with the Federal Trade Commission to protect consumers, notes Ted Dreyer, senior attorney at the compliance and risk management firm. According to Dreyer, eight agencies across various financial services industries are working together to create one common privacy notice that institutions must share with all of their consumer customers.

?The new model privacy notice will likely be ready in 2010, and is intended to look a lot more like the nutritional labels you see on the side of cereal boxes, versus the text-oriented brochures that are given out now,? said Dreyer. ?The idea is to create a cleaner, simpler explanation for the consumer of how an institution is protecting their personal information, and how consumers can exercise their rights to opt-out of some sharing of their information.?

ROLLING STONES frontman MICK JAGGER made a surprise appearance on stage with U2 on Friday (30Oct09) during the second night of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame concerts in New York City.

The first show on Thursday night (29Oct09) saw acts including Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, Jeff Beck, Sting and James Taylor take to the stage at Madison Square Garden.

Friday’s (30Oct09) show opened with Jerry Lee Lewis singing Great Balls of Fire, and went on to host a number of big name collaborations including Jeff Beck with Sting and U2 with the Black Eyed Peas.
The night built up to a climatic finale with Jagger, Fergie and Will.i.am all joining U2 to sing Rolling Stones hit Gimme Shelter, as Jagger entertained the crowd with his trademark dance moves.

Jagger stayed on stage to help U2 perform Stuck in a Moment You Can’t Get Out Of, before the Irish rockers closed the show with their hit Beautiful Day.

Earlier in the night, heavy metal rockers Metallica took the stage with Lou Reed for two songs, before Ozzy Osbourne joined them to belt out Iron Man and Paranoid.

Aretha Franklin also performed a number of her hits, teaming up with Annie Lennox to sing Chain of Fools.

NEW YORK — YouTube’s webcast of a U2 concert was watched by nearly 10 million people, the video site’s largest streaming event ever.

The Google-owned site said that the concert was watched around the world. It was shown live from the Rose Bowl in Pasadena on Sunday.

Chris Maxcy, head of music partnerships at YouTube, called the event “a big win” for the site.

The full 2 1/2-hour concert is available on YouTube. The rebroadcast video has been watched by more than 1.1 million viewers.

You know what’s missing from your social business profile on LinkedIn? Your tweet from yesterday, “Just remembered how much I like pickles.” Twitter and LinkedIn have anticipated your whim—today they’re announcing a partnership.

Okay, seriously, plenty of real business information is shared on Twitter. Depending on how you use the service, this really may be just what your profile needed—proof that you’re engaging with others in your industry, sharing helpful information, and have the know-how to do your job.

On the other hand, Twitter has also become an easy way to promote yourself—both in touting your abilities and giving yourself an actual promotion, to “guru.” Not everyone tweeting, and not everything said on Twitter, can be taken as evidence of expertise/guruosity/genius.

But don’t worry; if you’re tweeting so much to cover up the fact that you have nothing to say, you don’t have to add Twitter to LinkedIn. The New York Times reports:

LinkedIn’s 51 million members will now be able to send status updates — such as the fact that they are looking for an analyst on a certain topic, or posting a job opening — to Twitter on a case-by-case basis, and vice versa. People will also be able to add a section to their LinkedIn profile that contains their most recent tweets and view other people’s tweets when searching LinkedIn.

While this may get Twitter some more tweeting action and professional credibility, I think it’s probably an even smarter move for LinkedIn. LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner “wants LinkedIn to be the hub for all professional conversation,” according to the Times—and this looks like just the way to do it.

But remember, if your Twitter profile has more about your cat than your clients, it may not be a good idea to include that in your professional profile.

Google first announced is Chrome operating system in July. Open source and targeted at netbooks, the OS could launch within a week, according to TechCrunch.

Although TechCrunch reports that Chrome will probably only be available for certain targeted netbooks in the coming launch, it may not be ready for even that. In its original, official announcement, Google said it would open source its code later in 2009, with devices coming to market in the second half of 2010.

Despite TechCrunch’s reliable anonymous source, this rumor may be more speculation and confusion than drastically moving up the launch timeline. Launching the OS to the open source community—part of the planned development process anyway—has always been part of the plan. And recently, some netbooks (such as one from Acer) have already come to market with a Google operating system—Android, the Google mobile OS that’s slowly taking on the smartphone arena.

Google Chrome will be better suited to a full-sized computer than Android is, however. Google wants their lightweight OS to be able to start quickly with a minimal user interface.

If you’re really that eager for Chrome, PC World reminds us that a developer build is already ready. But remember, even if Google launches the source code next week, can we say compiler?

Meanwhile, Google is also premiering a new programming language this week. “Go” is touted as dynamic as Python and safe as C++. Any coincidence that it comes out this week?

Real time and local mobile search are two of the major hot spots in search today. and now they’re coming together. We’ve heard more and more about OneRiot now that their rumored deal with Yahoo has been confirmed in testing—and OneRiot is bring real time (and social) to mobile, this time through a partnership with mobile search provider Taptu. Says MediaPost,

People can search on their phone for real-time news. “You hear there’s a hurricane and want to read the latest buzz on your mobile phone,” says Tobias Peggs, general manager of OneRiot. “So, you do a search for ‘hurricane,’ but you don’t want to see the Wikipedia page. You need quick access to real-time news.”

As a refresher, OneRiot aggregates comments and links from across many social sites, including Twitter, in real time. Taptu is using OneRiot’s API to provide the real time results.

The next question with real time search is if and how it will be monetized. OneRiot’s general manager had more to say to MediPoast about that:

Peggs says the next step to serve up ads in real-time results means developing additional services through the company’s API. The move to improve relevant ads will provide the ability to “quickly scale up” and support partners the size of Microsoft and Yahoo.

And, of course, they’ve already begun working with Yahoo. However, currently it seems like advertising on real time search would be less profitable, since there are probably fewer real time commerce searches than information searches.

Neither Microsoft’s nor Google’s deal with Twitter applied to mobile search.
