We have some lovely orchids in our bathroom that recently bloomed, and Bridget’s been after me to take a photo of them. Seeing as I’m still getting over this nasty cold that I’ve been fighting all week, which has been keeping me indoors and preventing me from heading outdoors for photography, I decided today was a good time to make an image of these flowers.

Until I started getting more comfortable with hot shoe flashes, I relied solely on natural light for flower shots (or any kind of still life for that matter….or any kind of photography for that matter….). The sun had already set when I started shooting the orchids, so natural light was not an option. Sometimes, you just gotta roll your own light! This shot was taken using the pop up flash on the D300s set to command an SB-900 high on camera left and an SB-800 low on camera right. Both flashes are firing first through dome diffusers followed by a light tent that is housing the flowers. I shot in manual so I could set a shutter speed that would prevent ambient light from effecting the exposure while setting an aperture that would give me long depth of field for this macro shot.

Speaking of macro, it’s been quite a while since I’ve used my Micro Nikkor 60mm f/2.8G lens. I forgot what an amazing piece of glass it is. Focus speed is absolutely silent and feels instantaneous, even in low-light. To think I considered selling this thing!

Once again, the photo looks amazing in Lightroom and just so-so on WordPress. Can’t figure out why!

In the movie, Galaxy Quest, Jason Nesmith (Tim Allen) is an actor who played Commander Peter Quincy Taggert, commanding officer of the PROTECTOR, on the Star Trek-like TV show Galaxy Quest. Now in syndicated re-runs, the Galaxy Quest cast make a living rehashing their stale old TV episodes.  Nesmith lives only for himself, content to use others to get what he wants. One day, Nesmith unwittingly agrees to make an appearance for real aliens, the Thermians, who have come to earth to recruit them to face an alien race seeking to destroy them. Getting the rest of his Galaxy Quest cast members to pilot a spaceship the Thermians have built based on the “historical documents” (past TV shows), they must fight a real intergalactic space battle. Towards the end of the movie, Jason Nesmith (Tim Allen) is confronted by the alien commander, Sarris, regarding the function of something called the Omega 13 device. Nesmith tells Sarris he doesn’t know what it does, but Sarris doesn’t believe him, saying “You think that I am a fool, that the Commander does not know ever bolt, every weld, of his ship?” Nesmith is forced to admit that he’s not really the “Commander”, just an actor pretending to be something he’s not. In I Samuel 15, the prophet Samuel confronts King Saul over the sin in his life.  Saul has chosen to follow his own instincts, instead of obeying God.  In verse 11, God says “I regret that I have made Saul king, for he has turned back from following Me and has not carried out My commands.”  In reality, Saul was never interested in following God – he was only pretending!  Here is how Saul responded to Samuel when confronted about his sin (15:24-25):

Saul answered Samuel, “I have sinned. I have transgressed the LORD’s command and your words. Because I was afraid of the people, I obeyed them. Now therefore, please forgive my sin and return with me so I can worship the LORD.”    

While Saul admits his sin, he shifts the blame to others. It’s not his fault – he was afraid of the people. They wanted him to do what he did – so he obeyed them. And, he wants Samuel to go with him, to put on a show, so that the people will believe that Saul is back in the Lord’s good graces. To the very end, Saul simply pretends to be “the commander”. But in reality, he’s just an actor. When Samuel won’t do as he asks, Saul sets out to destroy David, the man Samuel has been led by God to find as Saul’s replacement.  

Compare this to David and how he responds when confronted with his sin of having Uriah killed and taking his wife, Bathsheba, as his own. In II Samuel 12, his friend Nathan confronts him with the truth of his sin, telling him a story of a situation similar to the sin of David and asking him what the King felt should be done. In anger at the circumstances, David says (II Samuel 12:5-7)

“As the Lord lives, surely the man who has done this deserves to die. He must restitution for the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing and had no compassion.” Nathan then said to David, “You are the man!”       

Unlike Saul, David takes full responsibility for his act. After listening to Nathan enumerate his sins and the punishment he deserves to receive, David responds “I have sinned against the Lord.” (II Samuel 12:13). No excuses. No attempts to shift the blame or to have Nathan killed for accusing him. David simply accepts the judgment, along with the punishment he is due because of his sin. Why did David make this choice? Because, as “a man after God’s own heart,” David understood that he had violated the Golden Rule, which says (Matthew 7:12): 

In everything, therefore, treat people the same way you want them to treat you, for this is the Law and the Prophets.

David realized that he could either destroy Nathan, the man who called him out and exposed him as a fraud, or face the fact that he was not who he said he was, the “valiant warrior” God had called him to be.  

Ultimately, this lesson from David’s life is about how we live the Golden Rule. If we run around demanding that others apologize for this or that, if we criticize others for being too controlling, if we hold others to account for broken relationships – but destroy the Nathans among us who might hold us to our own standards – we are nothing but a modern day Saul. In the end, we become merely pretenders who play to the crowd – and blame others for our failings, saying “they made me do it”.

It’s not easy.  In the movie, Galaxy Quest, Jason Nesmith (Tim Allen) has to admit his failings in front of everyone who believed that he was the Commander. David, too, had to admit he had sinned.  

What about you and me?  Are we the “real deal”, or just an actor hired to play the part?

Even before you enter the gates of Baltimore’s Fort McHenry these days, it’s obvious that there is heavy construction activity going on in and around this popular national monument and historic shrine. As I write this, part of the entrance is blocked for a new sidewalk and curb installation and, just inside the gate, you are directed off to the right to a temporary parking lot. The old parking lot and the public restrooms have been removed and the site is being prepared for the construction of a new Visitor and Education Center, scheduled to open in the fall of 2011.

Meanwhile, the statue of Orpheus, an important figure from Greek mythology, revered for his association with poetry and music, and in this case dedicated to Francis Scott Key, composer of the Star Spangled Banner, was swathed for a time in scaffolding. Both Orpheus and the statue of Lieutenant Colonel George Armistead, commander of the fort during the British Navel bombardment in 1814, were cleaned and treated with a custom wax coating to seal and protect their natural green patina. The same wax treatment was applied to the Francis Scott Key Plaque near the sally port entrance to the fort itself. These chores have been completed. The statues and plaque are looking sharp and await the completion and re-dedication of the new and expanded visitor facilities. Who knows, perhaps that clear blue sky in the “AFTER” image of Orpheus is an omen from the gods, foretelling a happy on-time and under-budget ending for the entire project. Here’s what they have in store for Jeep:

“Subcompact SUV: A small SUV is planned in 2013, based on the platform for the next generation Fiat Panda Cross.

Patriot: Minor exterior and interior changes are planned for 2010. Production ends in 2012.

Compass: Minor exterior and interior changes are slated for 2010. The Compass will be dropped in 2012.

Compact crossover: The unnamed crossover will be developed on a Fiat Group platform. Sales begin in 2013.

Wrangler: A new interior is scheduled for 2010. A new powertrain will be offered in 2011.

Liberty: Minor cosmetic and interior changes are planned for 2010. The redesigned Liberty debuts in 2013, based on a Fiat Group platform.

Commander: U.S. production ends late in 2010. The Commander may be assembled outside North America for export markets.

Grand Cherokee: The redesigned Grand Cherokee and next-generation Mercedes-Benz full-size SUVs are linked at the hip. Vehicle development started when Daimler owned Chrysler. Component sharing is expected to continue for several years. The redesigned Grand Cherokee debuts in May 2010.”

Khattab, whose real name was Samir Saleh Abdullah al-Suwailem, was born in Arar, Saudi Arabia, in 1969 and was described as a brilliant student who would regularly score high percentage pass rates in school examinations.

At the tender age of 17, Khattab left Saudi Arabia to participate in the fight against the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. It was to be his first experience in war and the start of an illustrious military career that would span 14 years.

After the war ended against the Russians, Khattab refused to come home to his family, instead choosing to move on to another war zone. During the next 14 years, he subsequently only visited his family on two occasions, the last of them being 1993. This was after he was gravely wounded four times and was the lone survivor when a truck exploded.

From 1995, till his assassination, Khattab fought in Chechnya. He was to become the commander-in-chief of the foreign fighters who were now inflicting heavy losses on the occupying Russian Army.

“The Fiat-Chrysler partnership has been brewing since well before the economic meltdown and federal loan bonanza of late 2008, but it’s still taking shape as the automakers find ways to work to their mutual benefit. The combined companies’ new CEO Sergio Marchionne is set to reveal the future plans for both Fiat and Chrysler in just a week’s time but we already have much of the details on hand.

According to people briefed on the plans, Alfa Romeo is set to return as a volume player in 2012. Fiat will be here too, although the only model planned is the 500 minicar, which should in early 2011…

Don’t feel too bad Fiat isn’t coming here in full force. Chrysler will introduce several new models that rely on Fiat platforms and technology. The first of these will be a new mid-sized sedan from Chrysler based on Fiat’s C-Evo platform, followed by new hatchback and a compact Jeep. There will also be redesigned versions of the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Chrysler 300 arriving as early as next year.

Several models will be dropped from Chrysler’s U.S. lineup as well. These will include a number of Dodge models, such as the Caliber, Nitro, Avenger, and several Jeep models, too, such as the Commander, Compass, and Patriot. Other vehicles getting the axe include Chrysler’s PT Cruiser and Sebring.”

language today is the word FUCK. It is one magical word! Just by
it's sound you can describe pain, displeasure, love and hate. In
language FUCK falls into many grammatical categories, it can be

Algumas pessoas usam, outras não. Algumas nem dão falta. A verdade é que a maioria dos gerenciadores de arquivos provê ótimas funcionalidades que o Windows Explorer apenas sonha ter.

Em meados da última década do século passado (ok, 1995), um amigo (@nickemerson) me apresentou o Total Commander, hoje o MELHOR GERENCIADOR DE ARQUIVOS DO MUNDO. Dramático. Claro que na época era para mim apenas mais um file manager. Somente depois, com vários testes passando pelos mais variados gerenciadores é que fui concluir que ele é realmente, o melhor de todos.

Eu sei, todos tem os seus aplicativos preferidos, seu SO preferido, seu editor de código, etc. Porém, se qualquer file manager fosse melhor do que o Total Commander, eu tinha trocado na hora. Mas isso nunca aconteceu porque são os  pequenos detalhes que fazem a diferença. Testei pelo menos uns dez, e desses, selecionei dois que considero bons, além do próprio Total Commander.

Apresento então, aqui e agora, os três motivos do “Porque o Total  Commander é imbatível“.

#1 : Copiar arquivos

Numa cópia, quando um ou mais arquivos existem no destino, o usuário deve intervir na execução do comando. O Total Commander é o que tem a maior gama de opções dos três, incluindo duas que acho fundamentais, a opção  ”Substituir antigos” e “Renomear”.

#2 : Procurar arquivos

Todos os três apresentaram ótimos resultados na velocidade das buscas, muito superiores à pequisa padrão do Windows Explorer, porém o xplorer² falhou feio ao trazer menos resultados que o real na pesquisa (sim, em marquei a opção recursivo). Em todos eu busquei por *.dll dentro da pasta Windows . Dos três, o FreeCommander é o único que não traz o opção de busca por expressão regular. Ponto para o Total Commander.

#3 : Comparar arquivos

Apenas o Total Commander tem o recurso de comparar arquivos, como num diff visual, permitindo facilmente eu encontrar as diferenças entre arquivos. Ótimo recurso para programadores.

Essas três são, na minha opinião, os motivos principais que me levam a utilizar o Total Commander. Sem falar que ele tem dezenas de outros excelentes recursos como cliente ftp, split e join de arquivos, compactador de arquivos, sync de diretórios, etc, fruto de mais de quinze anos de desenvolvimento e novas implementações. Ele é shareware (como o xplorer²), mas sua única “limitação” é uma “nag screen” que aparece quando você executa ele, e só. Pode usar quanto quiser.

Também não quero que ninguém ache que sou só eu que considero ele o melhor gerenciador de arquivos. Por isso busquei na Internet sobre o que outros achavam. Segue abaixo um screenshot do resultado de uma enquete feita pelo famoso site LifeHacker.
