Today I came into possession of these amazingly ordinary white canvas shoes… for less than $8 each. I’ve taken home two pairs – i’ll keep one white but the other will soon feel the wrath of my paintbrush!

After a bit of brainstorming, I retrieved a scrap of a memory an image that I loved. A red heart face, slightly wonky, that some fashion label had used on a t-shirt. It also had no mouth yet reminded me of the “Woo Hoo” heart on the Sims 2!!  (…and my geekery is revealed!)

I Googled, Googled and Googled some more before I finally – FINALLY – found the original image on a Comme des Garçons t-shirt!! Hurrah!!

I already have a bottle of red ink, with a label wich claims it to be suitable for fabric, and i’m sure I can pull a black Sharpie from somewhere so i’ll get to work as soon as I find a blank hour in my calender! I’m not decided if I should do a discrete design on each shoe, or if the greater design should span across them both.

Se em seu perfil Tavi já diz que “espalha pétalas negras na soleira da porta de Rei Kawakubo e faz serenatas para ela em rap”, dá para imaginar a emoção da garota – que, caso você não saiba, tem apenas 13 anos.

Comme des Garçonsa (CdG) partnership with Apple Records recently released a line of handbags, t-shirts and button down shirts featuring The Beatles. That’s right, you can now cruise around Tokyo arm-in-arm with John, Paul, George, & Ringo. When I first heard about the partnership I was excited but now….*sigh* Personally to me, WHAT’S THE POINT? It’s looking pretty plain and normal. It doesn’t look anything rock-ish or Beatle-ish at all. If it was priced at USD$25 a pop probably I would consider since it is CdG, but USD$115 for a t-shirt and it looks like this—-

Doesn’t it look like one of those t-shirts you get in a goodie-bag attending an event? OMG…did anyone smacked Rei Kawakubo’s head on the pavement before this was designed? Oh mio dio!!!! The ‘too-simple-for-the-cash’ designs also spread into fugly looking bags and the average button down shirts. Call me cheap, but I ain’t paying for anything if it looks like this…

Pocket-sized blogger Tavi Gevinson is taking the fashion world by storm the way only a 13-year-old can: by using words like “shooooozzz”; drinking her daily dose of Nesquik; attending NY Fashion week as a special guest; and and flying to Japan to party with Comme des Garçons.

Wait… what? How the eff did she pull that off? Let’s do some research.

I checked out her blog style rookie and I found it shockingly astute. This chick knows fashion. She knows music. She knows designers.

And not the obvious ones, rather she likes art-house fashion designers like Rei Kawakubo and Viktor & Rolf. We’re talking progressive designers that I didn’t start obsessing about until I started hawking clothes (aka working in retail) and pouring over style.com at the ripe age of 23.

See example of her emerging brilliance in this post: sophie loves mac and cheese dinosaur, which sounds like the name of a garage band aspiring to be like animal collective.

And she just keeps rising up.

As posted on Huffington Post, sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy (the designers behind award-winning label Rodarte) said they got in touch with Tavi after they discovered her blog laced with personal photos and thoughtful musings on the world of fashion and design. The sisters invited the lil’ blogger to sit front row at their show, with less important people (like celebs and fashion writers/editors) sitting in her shadow.

“Tavi makes you think about things differently, makes you see things differently,” said Kate in her interview with HuffPost.

Yes, I agree that’s true. She is fresh, cute and delightfully girly. She has an impressively strong voice. She’s also intelligent and paradoxical: She posts carefree photos of herself and her other teensy friends posing like models in thrift-store threads on playgrounds,  yet she’s also burdened by an old soul’s perceptions of the sad, superficial world of teendom.

In her words: I admire those who can hit a volleyball or kick a soccer ball and be really committed to practicing stuff. I could never do any of these and am bitter that I am forced to try to every day. I am also bitter that a volleyball hit me smack dab in the face last week, causing my glasses to fall to the floor, causing me to go to the trouble to bend over to pick up my also bent spectacles. My crooked glasses served as a sad metaphor for what the nerd’s place is in a room full of physically talented individuals.

However… (there is always an “however” with me…)

In her article for the Guardian, Eva Wiseman writes, “Gevinson’s blog was initially assumed to be a fake created by fashion insiders because it was so professional, and features analysis of magazines and photographs of her daily outfits.”

And on the site Virtual Jerusalem, T. Litvin writes, “Tavi’s blog is currently pulling more than four million regular readers, and it’s easy to see why the fashion world initially believed it to be a fake written by a much older and more experienced person.”

Well we know she doesn’t have four million readers but…

Well, which is it? Is her blog a fake or an inspiration? I must admit, this thought did creep into my mind. How did we determine it’s not fake again? I missed that part.

Please don’t get me wrong; I really don’t want it to be fake! Just look at these delightful photos she’s taken of herself:

Amazing, love. I absolutely am buying into her world. There, I’ve said it.

Ya know… If I had to pick between a Comme des Garcons show and a Victoria’s Secret show, I’d pick the latter. I like hoe shit what can I say…

It would be fun, have Bellinis  first, The Fishy would have to help me to my seat, because, I’d be dancing/happy/buzzed and about to fall. The music would be pumping, gooooood times.

Love these little sweaters… Might try a DIY

I have been to The Grocery Store twice, both times i have left the store empty handed, however not because i couldn’t find anything but because I have a tendency to gravitate towards the items that does not fit into my student budget. Unfortunately.

Tucked away in Laurel Heights, The Grocery Store carries more economical clothing and accessories than its sister store Susan’s, a high end store located just about a block away, yet the price point is above what the average person might spend on a t-shirt or jeans. In their defense, this is all quality clothing and the designers they carry are lesser known and therefore something you cant find just anywhere in SF.

If you are looking for colorful, printed or dramatic clothing this is not the store for you, as most of what they carry are solid colored garments yet still eye catching and with excellent character. Cool jackets from Maria Cornejo and Jeremy Laing, to sweaters from Comme Des Garcon, tshirts by James Perse and miscellaneous diffusion lines such as Miu Miu and D&G, The Grocery Store have the best clothing from the hottest upcoming designers as well as the already well established ones.

Just  a word of advice, if you do happen to overspend on clothing and have a terrible anxiety attack later, know that the store does not do returns, only store credit is accepted. My only wish is that they would create a website to better update their customers on when new merchandise hits the store, but i assume this is also part of the allure of The Grocery Store, not ever knowing what exactly is in the store attracts customers even more often to assure they are not missing out on anything.

The fashion blogger we all love, Tavi Gevinson aka the Style Rookie, is going to meet Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garcons. Word has it that she’ll be the guest of honor at the fashion house’ holiday party on Friday November 27 at the 10 Corso Como store in Tokyo.

Call it what you want, but Tavi is a testament that dreams really do come true.

The brand, mintdesigns was launched in 2001. They have been in Tokyo Collection since ‘03 S/S. The awards they won include the Moet et Chandon New Designer’s Award in 2005. In 2007, mintdesigns garage store opened in Shibuya PARCO. They presented their collection in the 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT THIS PLAY! show. In 2008, they presented the opening show at São Paulo Fashion Week for ‘09 S/S. Both designers currently hold positions as guest professors at the Faculty of Art and Design at Osaka Seikei University. In 2009 they presented their collection at the Milano Salone TOKYO FIBER ‘09.Mint Designs turned out a dainty crop of dresses featuring details such as shimmery stripes, textured fabric and quirky graphics. One frock featured a darling print of tiny Charlie Chaplins, while another showcased circular cutouts along the sides.

The Beatles have announced a collaboration with COMME des GARCONS to create a collection of bags and clothes. The collection will be designed by Rei Kawakubo using inspiration from the works of The Beatles.  The first part of this long-term partnership consists of t-shirts and  handbags.

The collection is available on November 27 at the Dover Street Market.

So I posted a few months ago that this collab was coming down the pipe. Here they are.

Not what I expected and I am underwhelmed.

Will not buy.

When it comes to fashion, I usually opt for understatement. I like clothes that whisper rather than shout. However, every now and then, I fall in love with an item that speaks a little more loudly than what I am accustomed to, which deviates slightly from my normal preferences. This season, the odd object of my affection is none other than that much lambasted symbol of female domesticity, the apron.

I actually prefer Rei Kawakubo’s version: the formality of the wool pinstripe fabric contrasts nicely with the idea of the apron as work wear. Plus, the McQueen version is a little too “Daniel Day-Lewis in Gangs of New York” for me.

I think what attracts me to the apron is that it introduces a very androgynous silhouette. From the front, it actually looks like a dress–a sort of pinafore for men. However, the utilitarian detailing–studs, pockets, zippers–gives it an edge and prevents it from looking a little too, well, quaint.

Although it’ll prove to be an interesting addition to any wardrobe–think of the layering possibilities–there is one huge setback: the price. P21,000++ for a wool apron (or P100,000++ for a leather one)? Only if Santa decides that I’ve been a really good boy this year and gives me one.

What extraordinary times we are living in! The iconoclastic Comme des Garcons will collaborate … with two houses at opposite ends of the fashion spectrum!

Starting today you can indulge in CdG’s capsule collection for H&M at select stores (US locations include NY, Chicago, LA and SF). It also launches H&M’s second store in Tokyo – brilliant marketing coup as H&M strikes again with a top designer at reasonable prices! CdG acolytes especially those who have lost their shirts in the recent stock market crash can now renew their wardrobes at recession prices – $25 to $130 for most pieces. Don’t wait too long though, H&M designer collections tend to get sold out almost the day they arrive at the stores.

BFash editors wonder though whether CdG will lose its cachet by straying far from its intellectual, unconventional approach in riding the H&M designer-of-the-day bandwagon.

She’s in a Comme des Garcons trench/poncho thing. Hot or what!? Her kids are so ‘cool’! Seriously!
