I think this is supposed to be funny. What with the horrible singing, bathrobe, and the inappropriate groans. However I think it fails to be anything more than bad. This is not the only commercial he did for Sankyo but it is by far the worst. His cousin Sophia did Lost in Translation, earned an Oscar. Nic does it for real and earned my hatred.

Oh who am I kidding? Sophia earned it with Lost in Translation too.

I Love That Commercial! - Target's Black Friday Ads

If you’ve been watching TV the last week or so, you’ve probably seen this series of commercials, advertising Target’s post Thanksgiving weekend sale. They feature comedian Maria Bamford, playing two (twin?) sisters who are both going to be shopping at Target during this year’s Black Friday madness. One is a perky, aggressive, Type-A personality and the other is more homely and laid back.

My wife and I have seen Maria Bamford perform her comedy routine a few times, in L.A. and at Coachella a few years ago. She’s a founding member of the Comedians Of Comedy, which also includes Patton Oswalt and Brian Posehn, and she’s always hilarious. Her actual personality is not exactly like either of the sisters in the ad, but I hope she gains some new fans from these spots.

Since there have been a series of them airing, I am posting a few of the best ones below.

Have you seen it? Chase has a new business credit card commercial out for entrepeneurs. It’s a typical pitch, nothing terribly earth shattering in the presentation except for one disturbing detail – the band Yes apparently authorized Chase to use its classic song I’ve Seen All Good People to plug its new plastic. I say apparently, because I would guess the band, or at least Chris Squire and Jon Anderson the band members who wrote the song would have had to grant Chase the rights to it for use in an ad campaign. Permitting Chase to use the song is disturbing enough; Chase using the song to reap financial gain is deplorable and perhaps not the wisest of strategies.

The song is not about profit, rather it has a strong anti-war message which is just as relevant today as it was in late 1971 when the The Yes Album was released. The lyrics suggest chess as a metaphor for the war then raging in Vietnam. “I’ve seen all good people turn their heads each day so satisfied I’m on my way”. This line suggests the frustration that despite massive protests, LBJ and Nixon along with other power brokers seemed unwilling to end the war. The song continues with advice on a new course: “Don’t surround yourself with yourself, move on back two squares”. Reach out to give diplomacy a chance to bring the war to an end. “Send out instant karma to me, initial it with loving care.” A clear call for peace – a truce. The alternative as John Lennon warned in his 1970 anti-war classic Instant Karma! is that continued involvement in war will guarantee negative future returns.

Chase is taking extreme liberties with the message of the song, which could lead to bad karma for the company, a company that already got a second chance 25 billion government bailout initialed with loving care.

I Hate That Commercial! - Peyton Manning and Justin Timberlake

Sony’s commercials with Peyton Manning and Justin Timberlake have been airing for a few months now, advertising different things. Overall, I really don’t have a huge problem with the ads. In fact, for the most part, I’ve given so little attention to them that when I started to write this article, I didn’t even know what it was that Manning and Timberlake were even advertising in the first place. Now, that’s a poor marketing campaign.

And by the way, what’s up with Peyton Manning whoring himself for various commercials lately? It seems like you can’t watch a TV show without seeing him at least once during the broadcast. But anyway, getting back to the Sony ads…

As I said, I really didn’t pay much attention to them, until the one debuted that promotes the film Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs. Maybe it’s just me, but Justin Timberlake, with his computer generated eyeballs, is one of the more disturbing things I’ve seen in commercials lately.

This is what we have become. We not only acknowledge that we are plugged in from the moment we wake up until the moment we sleep, we celebrate it. We take for granted that it is a part of our lives, a part of every small moment that matters to us. Making out in a cab? Don’t forget to check your text messages and email. What identity do we have if we are not plugged in? Do we even exist away from our screens?

Our hearts and minds are half cybernetic. We used to shop for comfortable ear buds, but now our ears conform to the buds. All of our reasoning is now tied to the Machine. If we are lost, we ask the Machine. If we forget who won the 1972 World Series, we ask the Machine. Why worry about remembering if the Machine remembers everything for us?

We used to feel our own emotions as well, but now we have the Machine to supply them for us. Need to relax? Dial up a music search for cool jazz. Need to feel loved? We can find that great scene from our favorite romantic comedy. Then our handheld devices can tell us, “You complete me.”

The world has been moving fast, and those who have tried to remain human have felt a lack, a hole in their souls that they have tried to fill by buying yoga classes, Tae Bo DVDs, expensive shoes, and more expensive cars.

But now we are complete. We are connected. To what and to whom? Who cares? We have bought our serenity in a $199 cell phone and $40 a month in digital service fees. For that small fee the Machine provides all.

We have been assimilated. The singularity is here. Resistance is futile? Who among us is resisting?

I just saw the following commercial for the website last week, which I thought was incredibly cheery and season-appropriate. Who can’t crack a smile with a dozen rapping, dancing b-children (Is that the marriage of words, “b-boys” and “b-girls”?) on your television/computer screen?

Well, this commercial is stupid. It isn’t funny, Flo isn’t funny, the guy who looks like Steve-O isn’t funny, and progressive insurance isn’t funny. So the joke is… I don’t know, there isn’t one. She just kind of talks… for the whole fucking time. This commercial suggests she rides a motorcycle. She pantomimes riding a motorcycle and the guy, who’s just trying to make conversation and be nice, suggests she rides a 500. Then Flo, acting like a total bitch, one-ups the guy and says she rides some better motorcycle showing her vast knowledge of the subject. The guy who looks like steve-o clearly doesn’t give a shit about her, and to avoid talking to her again, ends the conversation. I don’t know why she felt she had to prove her knowledge of motorcycles. It’s just like someone who feels the need to announce something they’ve done, like scoring a goal, because they didn’t get a reaction for anyone. The go “yeah! I scored!” and nobody fucking cares because we all saw you score and clearly don’t give a shit because we don’t feel like wasting breath acknowledging it.

So what did I learn at the end of all these progressive commercials? Flo is consistently unfunny and I’m muting the commercials every time they come on. If I could give this commercial a rating out of 5, I wouldn’t. 1 isn’t low enough.

Serious lack of funny

Well, if I could afford Tivo, I would really like to rewind this commercial when it comes on so I could have a second chance at finding the joke. Seriously, I miss it every time. Those folks over at Geico must do a really good job hiding it because I’m almost convinced there actually is no joke.

Anyways, I guess the whole point of this commercial is to show you how much money you could be saving if you switched to Geico. What confuses me is this little money stack with eyes is supposed to represent that “money which could have been saved” but since you would have already spent that money with your other insurance company, does that mean that that money stack with eyes is a ghost of your spent money? It would have to be a ghost because if it was physically there, then that would mean you never spent that money on the other insurance company. And if you never spent it on the other insurance company, then you just took out a stack of money for no fucking reason and glued eyes on it, not saving anything. Mindfuck. But that’s just looking too far into a commercial that doesn’t deserve any type of thought. Not only is this commercial incredibly unfunny, the song played at the end is like a parasite that latches on to your brain and forces you to replay that song over and over and over until you finally manage to forget it. And as soon as you do, another one of this fucking stupid commercials comes on. I really don’t have anything else to say about it because my brain has suffered enough from watching them let alone talking about them.

Verdict: Geico cavemen are funnier, and that’s not saying much

Just came across this commercial in the theaters, and I absolutely love Sia’s cover of the Australian band, The Church’s song “Under the Milkyway”. The song came out the year I was born, and was recorded by Sia specifically for the Lincoln commercial. Both the recording and the commercial came out great. Check it out:

Immediately following Thanksgiving, I am usually in somewhat of a turkey coma for approximately 72 hours, confused by anything and anyone that moves too quickly.

With this being said, there is one American tradition I have never quite understood, and that is Black Friday.

First of all- doesn’t that sound like something that happens the night before Halloween? You know, when your mom made you stay inside with the doors locked, peaking out the front window every so often to make sure no hooligans or heathens egged or TP’d your house.

Second of all- who wants to wake up at 3:30 in the morning following the day you stuff yourself senseless? It’s like self torture. All the black friday ads, and commercials, and radio announcements send thousands into a fevered shopping frenzy, and all the while I am snug as a bug in my bed recovering from two and a half bottles of wine that made yesterday the spinning carousel of a day it was.

All I have to say to you Black Friday is you can keep your crazy antics, I’m going back to sleep!

Casting Call for HSE Commercial next Monday 30th November

Casting: Monday 30th November
Shoot: Monday 7th December & maybe Tuesday 8th December

The HSE have commisioned a commercial to promote the website www.weigh2live.eu.
The cast must be comfortable with wirework & being thrown into the air while wearing a bungee rubber rig as the ad will be shot completely in harnesses.
Model looks are not essential & distinctive or quirky features are fine.
Women: 2 women aged 25-40, to look Irish/English & both must have BMI’s between 25-32.
A BMI of 25-30 is overweight.
A BMI of 30-32 is obese.

Men: 2 men aged 25-40, to look Irish/English & both must have BMI’s of 25-32
The lead man must have a definate paunch or pot belly.

Great facial expressions & excellent comic timing is essential.
Leads must take direction well & be able to concentrate on the acting even when moving in the air.
