On Monday 21st we held our annual Christmas party at Darlington’s Forum venue. We sold about 140 tickets and most people showed up despite the snow and the sub-zero temperatures: -8 is really quite cold for the UK.

The gig went quite well. We messed up a few openings but people didn’t seem to mind. We managed to play the Pogues’ Fairytale in New York despite not having rehearsed it properly since last year. The venue was freezing cold apparently but hot enough on stage under the lights

My favourite tracks were Street Spirit (Radiohead), Common People (Pulp) and Losing my Religion (REM). It was a great way to end the year and we’re looking forward to our first wedding appointment in the New Year!!

Firstly Before you howl “This ain’t new, we heard it months ago”  like a bunch of uncanny wolves, i would just like to say this song passed under the radar and i formerly apology to Mr Cocker himself for this cock up (Again the pun master strikes again). Despite Jarvis being a brit-pop legend and a song writing maestro he’s looking abit worse for wear. Alas he may look like a jigging homeless librarian but this song “Further Complications” is a real raw indie clanger. I’ve compiled my favourite things about this song and it’s video into a nice list.

The Video

• At 0.05 it looks like he has just been injected with some kind of  electrical based fluid.
• At 0.43 he jigs his shoulder psychedelically while looking into the unknown
• At 0.49  he preforms a classic Grandad dance, in which we see at family parties and such like.
• 1.19 He says “Go to a disco” of which he accompanies with a backwards hand jive while in some kind of yoga position.
• 1.58 He does the most obscure thing ive ever seen in a music video

As for the song

Well the clanging bass and guitar clash with the moaning voice of cocker and then a chorus that is worthy of a Pulp single. The foot stomping progressive beat and the spine tapping sharp gasps make this a real indie feat.

Ok so I’m sitting here in math, I don’t know why. A while back befor I started college I messed up my placement test for math and ended up in intro to algebra. So needless to say I know now why doves cry. But there isn’t very many people here today. They decided not to come, Whig makes me contemplate why I’m sitting here? I have to give a presation in a couple hours about math. Why am I tortuering witty this math business. I hate math. I’d much rather be learning something of use. Insted of listening to a graduate student talk about exponents. The rest of the people in the class are falling asleep. I just wish I was working twoard some sort of goal, but right now I’m just kinda guessing. Not knowing what the future holds. Just my loose acting plans. I’m not even persueing that right now. I’m sitting here listening about exponents. Ohh well at least it’s nice in warm in the building. It’s the little things you know.

La de William Shatner es una carrera tardíamente lúcida: sobrevivir a base de convenciones decadentes, ser reverenciado por niños de cuarenta años, convertirse en icono camp, empeñarse en defender un absurdo proyecto musical… todo eso ha hecho del viejo capitán Kirk de Star Trek un tipo de lo más cachondo. Y, tras mucho empeño, un ¿músico? a tener en cuenta.

Eran los años 60, la década camp por excelencia, la del Batman de Adam West, los hippies y la psicodelia para las masas. Richard Nixon era presidente de los EE.UU. de América. Aún no habían matado a John Lennon. El fenómeno Star Trek acababa de hacer eclosión y algunos de sus protagonistas intentaban expandir fronteras; así, Leonard Nimoy (Mr. Spock) se cascaba una chorrada del tamaño de “The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins” sin parpadear. El bueno de Shat, por su parte, fue mucho más ambicioso.

“The Transformed Man” aparece en 1968 con una propuesta estrambótica hasta decir basta. Shatner, en pleno éxtasis beatnik, casa a trompicones fragmentos de literatura clásica con canciones pop del momento. Así, tal cual. Shakespeare, The Beatles, Rostand, Dylan. La cosa aún podría funcionar, pero no: el actor se obceca en recitar (en ningún momento pretende ser cantante) en un spoken word forzadísimo, afectado e involuntariamente cómico. Y los arreglos, virgen santa, los arreglos. El disco es un éxito, pero no como Shatner deseaba: aparece en listas de los peores álbumes de la historia, en recopilatorios de celebridades rebajándose, se convierte en un chiste recurrente que aún hoy perdura.

Pero si una cosa no le falta a nuestro amigo Bill es tenacidad. Se escuda en un halo de incomprensión y no ceja en la defensa de su “estilo” personal, aunque a nadie más le guste. Y luego llegan las convenciones de trekkies. La menospreciada película “Galaxy Quest” (aquí “Héroes fuera de órbita”, dios) esboza un acertado relato de lo que debe de suponer ser un ex-Trek: convenciones, supervivencia, estoicismo y más convenciones: ahí se debió forjar la peculiar introspección iniciática de Shatner. Sigue adelante, como puede, con su persona espacial, mientras los años le convierten en un preparabarbacoas sonrosado y bonachón. Y el tiempo, que no cura nada pero al menos da perspectiva, le acaba haciendo entrar en razón. Y deja de tomarse en serio a sí mismo.

Como recompensa a sus infames logros y a su sabiduría forjada a fuego llega un día su amigo Ben Folds y le produce y arregla un disco autoconsciente desde su mismo título, “Has Been” (“vieja gloria”). Un album que, para sorpresa de todos (diría que hasta del mismo Shatner), no sólo no es ridículo: es asombrosamente cautivador.

“Has Been” es una excepción dentro de la trayectoria de su protagonista, del panorama musical y de sabe dios qué otras cosas más. Sin abandonar su amado spoken word, pero con una mano firme guiándole, Shatner se muestra arrollador en lo sonoro y en lo textual. Esta vieja gloria consciente del papel que le ha tocado en el reparto se destapa: sombrío, gruñón, resignado, tierno, débil y, sobretodo, ácido, muy ácido. “Has Been” es el trabajo de un cómico experto, esta vez sí, voluntariamente, que acaba emocionando más que levantando sonrisas.

Comienza el asunto con una redonda versión del “Common People” de Pulp, tema ya de por sí redondo. Shatner no sólo capta a la perfección el desprecio y el cinismo que requiere la pieza: diría que incluso supera a los de Cocker. Su forma de recitar (acompañada vocalmente por Joe Jackson, unos arreglos guitarreros sincronizadísimos y unos coros en su justo lugar) es cruda, distanciada y epifánica. La pomposidad de su “estilo” cobra sentido. Quizá este sea el único defecto del conjunto: arranca tan fuerte que en ningún corte vuelve a impresionar de la misma manera. La única queja de un CD completísimo.

Shatner recita en solitario pasajes de puro terror gótico (“What Have You Done”), reflexiona sobre su figura (“It Hasn’t Happened Yet” o la emotiva “Real”), se pone elegante para anunciarnos, sardónicamente, que todos vamos a morir (“You’ll Have Time”, en la que unas coristas repiten “you’re gonna die” alegremente mientras Shat repasa nombres de celebridades defenestradas) y suelta toda la bilis en un dúo de cascarrabias con Henry Rollins (“I Can’t Get Behind That”) que por momentos alcanza cotas de monólogo de George Carlin.

“Has Been” es la obra de un perro viejo que a base de ser una estrella de tercera ha alcanzado la gloria. Directo, sincero, sin resentimientos y, ante todo, entrañable, Shatner consigue al fin lo que lleva intentando desde hace más de cuarenta años. A veces hay que pasar por abortos antes de ser padre.

Shat, viejo cabrón, te diría lo que te dicen todos, “larga vida y prosperidad”, pero a ti no te hace falta. Porque sabes que todos nos morimos, pero tú lo harás justo en el sitio en el que querías estar: en el pequeño solar de poesía de este chiste que es la vida. Y recitando.

Common People, Pulp

Parce que cette chanson conjugue une fougue juvénile inépuisable et un message astucieux, quasi-sociologique.

Parce qu’une orchestration de qualité ne gâchera jamais un bon texte, contrairement à ce que la paresseuse variété française croit quand elle produit trois accords ratés et appelle ça “chanson à texte”.

Parce qu’il est impossible de se lasser de cette chanson, qui s’élève par touches jusqu’à l’embrasement final .

Parce que Jarvis parle des classes sociales, de l’Angleterre, de la bourgeoisie et des jeunes friqués qui ne peuvent comprendre la clôture de l’espace vital, mental et culturel de ceux qui ne sont pas en haut de l’échelle.

Parce que, parfois, l’émotion, plus intellectuelle, que procurent la littérature et la poésie ne suffisent plus.

Parce que Pulp exalte et élève ici la musique populaire.

Parce que cette chanson me renverse à chaque écoute.

Parce que ce blog n’est pas que l’expression sentencieuse d’un demi-lettré autodidacte.

Parce que le rugissement de Jarvis Cocker, ce “tu ne seras jamais comme nous” parvient à exprimer le non-dit social avec plus de véracité, sinon de pertinence, que des milliers de travaux sociologiques.

Et pour des milliers d’autres raisons, le Common people de Pulp  méritait une note!

Album Different Classes (1995).

Les trois premières vidéos sont des live de Pulp. La dernière est la version de William Shatner – l’acteur qui jouait le Capitaine Kirk dans Star Trek -. Shatner, 75 ans quand même, livre une interprétation assez spéciale, mais fort réussie de Common People. Accompagné de Joe Jackson – qui a eu son petit succès avec Steppin’ Out dans les années 80 – et du pianiste Ben Folds – du quintet Ben Folds Five -, il redonne de l’agressivité au texte en accélérant le tempo. Seuls les live de Pulp parviennent à égaler cette puissance combinatoire des paroles et de la mélodie. Les trois extraits de concerts sélectionnés, dans trois voies différentes, enrichissent, par leur ton général, Common people.

The definition of a congressman is a Senator or a Representative. There are 100 senators and 435 representatives. A representative is up for election every two years and the senators every 6 years; making $150k per year.

Common people just call them liars and crooks.

I’m so sick to death of hearing how crooked and corrupt our government is. Senators and Representatives are elected by the people. They’re elected to represent the people on issues that concern them and to get those issues resolved.

But if you’ve got these career politicians in there and they gain so much power and influence; they don’t want to leave.

What we need a revolution. Not a civil war…

We need to clean out the old. We need a revolution, of new people, new ideas and a better level of working together. The founding fathers of this country didn’t intend on someone being in public service their entire life. The idea was to serve a term or two and then return to the private sector.

If these politicians actually had to return to ‘real life’ they might actually start reading and understanding the things they’re voting for.

But what’s happened is that people in government have decided to move in and stay. They get in office and they stay in office; they get corrupted. And we know all too well that congressmen can’t seem to stay honest [if they ever were]. It’s like a game with these guys; who can they have an affair with and can they keep it a secret.

If it’s not the affairs, it’s the bribes, corruption and arrests that mind us that these publicly elected people are not serving our best interest and they’re not morally right. Who wants to be represented by an adulterer or know that the person that’s supposed to be representing you is being bought by lobbyists to server their needs and not yours.

If a politician gets money from a lobbyist 60% of that should go to taxes, just like a person would at work would get a bonus.

These guys even have bills that say if they get convicted of a crime, they still get their pensions; that’s 50-100k a year for being a convict. And there seems to be no wanting to change this law… Where is this right?

They work for us, and it’s being allowed to happen. It’s embarrassing.

Working in this level of government, they shouldn’t be allowed to camp out there that long and then become corrupt and powerful. You should have your two terms and then you’ve to leave. It’s supposed to be ‘public service’, not ‘career service’.

These things and this behavior should not be tolerated.

I ara sí. Vegin els dos vídeos perquè són magnífics. Primer la versió original de Pulp de la qual els parlava l’altre dia i després la versió dels Manel del Common People -el clip en directe és brutal, sinó vegin els detalls de la gent que passeja pel mercat i  del so en directe del grup-. Quin gran tema! I per cert, a tall d’anècdota, la història que explica la cançó de la noia grega -que s’havia cultivat per Grècia- és completament autobiogràfica del cantant de Pulp, Jarvis Cocker. O això almenys és el que va explicar al reportatge del Live Forever del 33… Vegin, vegin, no te pèrdua.
