(Open Thread)

November 20, 2009
by Chip Wood

Did you know that our Pilgrim forefathers tried communism when they first landed at Plymouth Rock?

How’s that for a dramatic beginning to a story? Years ago, when I used to give a lot of talks to high school classes, this was one of my favorites. It always got the students’ attention. And I have to admit, I also enjoyed seeing some liberal teachers get so upset with me they almost lost their lunches.

Here’s the story I told those students in those long-ago presentations.

The Pilgrims who arrived at Plymouth Rock in 1620 were incredibly brave and hardy souls. They were motivated by the noblest of virtues. They vowed, each and every one, to be as selfless as possible—to always put the needs of the group first. They agreed to own everything in common and to share everything equally.

And their naïve piety almost killed the entire colony.

We all know how the adventure begins. A group of devout Christians, seeking religious freedom for themselves and eager to “advance the Gospel of the Kingdom of Christ” in the New World, sets sail from Plymouth, England in 1620. An investment consortium known as the Merchant Adventurers of London paid the expenses for the trip, including chartering the Mayflower and its 40-man crew.

The deal was simple: The Pilgrims agreed to establish a colony in northern Virginia where they would plant crops, fish the waters and hunt in the forests. They would return a certain percentage of each year’s bounty to London until their debt had been repaid.

Things went wrong from the start. First, the syndicate changed the deal, drastically reducing the amount they would loan the Pilgrims. The brave adventurers were forced to sell many of their own possessions, and much of their provisions, to pay for the trip. As a result, they landed in the New World badly short of supplies.

Next, the small ship they had purchased in Holland, which was to accompany them to America so they could fish the waters off the coast, had to be abandoned in England.

Shortly after they set sail, the ship, badly misnamed the Speedwell, became “open and leakie as a sieve,” as its captain reported. They returned to Dartmouth, where the boat was dry-docked for three weeks as repairs were made.

But to no avail. After leaving Dartmouth, the group sailed less than 300 miles when the captain decided the Speedwell “must bear up or sink at sea.” This time the ships put in at Plymouth, England, where it was decided to go on without the Speedwell. On Sept. 16, 1620, the Mayflower set out alone to cross the Atlantic.

A month later, when they had reached the halfway point, fierce storms battered the ship and threatened the lives of passengers and crew. Many wanted to turn back for England. But if they abandoned the journey, they would lose everything they had invested. The Pilgrims decided to trust in God and sail on.

Despite the storms, the hazards, the crowding and the poor food, only one Pilgrim died during the voyage, a young servant. His death was balanced by the birth of a son to Stephen and Elizabeth Hopkins, who named their child Oceanus.

There were 102 passengers on board the Mayflower—50 men, 20 women and 32 children—along with a crew of 40. The captain set a course along the 42nd parallel, a bearing that would carry him to Cape Cod. From there he intended to swing south and follow the coast to northern Virginia.

A little over two months later, on Nov. 19, land was finally sighted and the captain turned the ship south, toward Virginia. However, they soon encountered such “dangerous shoals and roaring breakers” that they turned back to Massachusetts. It was then that the grumblings of dissent turned into a full-fledged roar. Many of the passengers insisted on landing in Massachusetts, where “none had power to command them.”

The Pilgrim leaders decided to meet the explosive situation by asking each male on board, except for the crew, to sign a formal document that would lay “the first foundation of their government in this place.” Thus the Mayflower Compact was born.

The Pilgrims were a diverse lot. Many of them were illiterate. Yet in creating the Mayflower Compact they showed an extraordinary political maturity. They agreed to establish a government by the consent of the governed, with just and equal laws for all. Each adult male, regardless of his station in life—gentleman, commoner or servant—would have an equal vote in deciding the affairs of the colony. Of the 65 men and boys on board, all but 24 signed the agreement. The only ones who did not were the children of those adults who did sign, or men who were too sick to do so.

The first decision made under the covenant was to abandon efforts to reach Virginia and instead to settle in New England. The first explorers landed at Plymouth on Dec. 21, 1620.

Weather delays kept the majority from seeing their new home for nearly two weeks. On Jan. 2, 1621, work began on the first building they would erect—a storehouse.

Because provisions were so scanty they decided that the land would be worked in common, produce would be owned in common, and goods would be rationed equally. Not unlike the society Karl Marx envisioned of “from each according to his ability, to each according to his need.”

Unfortunately, thanks to illness, injury and attitude, the system did not work. Pilferage from the storehouse became common. Suspicions of malingering were muttered. Over the course of that first, harsh winter, nearly half of the colonists perished. Four families were wiped out completely; only five of 18 wives survived. Of the 29 single men, hired hands and servants, only 10 were alive when spring finally came.

The colonists struggled desperately for two more years. When spring arrived in April 1623, virtually all of their provisions were gone. Unless that year’s harvest improved, they feared few would survive the next winter. The Pilgrim leaders decided on a bold course. The colony would abandon its communal approach and permit each person to work for his own benefit, not for the common good.

Here is how the governor of the colony, William Bradford, explained what happened then. This is taken from his marvelously readable memoir (if you can make adjustments for the Old English spellings), History of Plimoth Plantation:

“The experience that was had in this commone course and condition, tried sundrie years, and that amongst godly and sober men, may well evince the vanitie of that conceite of Plato & other ancients, applauded by some of later times;—that ye taking away of properties, and bringing it in communitie into a commone wealth, would make them happy and flourishing; as if they were wiser than God.

For this communitie (so farr as it was) was found to breed much confusion & discontent, and retard much employment that would have been to their benefite and comforte. For yet young men that were most able and fitte for labor & services did repine that they should spend their time & strength to worke for other men’s wives and children with out any recompense.”

Once they replaced communal efforts with individual responsibility the differences were dramatic—and life-saving. Men went into the fields earlier and stayed later. In many cases, their wives and even their children (some barely past the toddler stage) worked right alongside them. More acres were planted, more trees were felled, more houses were built, and more game was slaughtered because of one simple change: People were allowed to keep the fruits of their own labors.

The Pilgrims arrived deeply in debt to the London merchants who sponsored them. They worked for more than 20 years, as individuals and as a community, to pay off the crushing burden. In 1627, they borrowed money to pay off the Merchants Adventurers. By 1645, they had paid off the entire debt to the company which had advanced them the sums to pay off the Merchants.

When their debt had been paid in full (at the astronomical interest rate of 45 percent per year), the company that had advanced the sums wrote the Pilgrims:

Let it not be grievous to you, that you have been instruments to break the ice for others who come after with less difficulty. The honour shall be yours to the world’s end.

As we celebrate this coming Thanksgiving Day, some 380 years after the Pilgrims celebrated the first of this uniquely American holiday, let us remember the sacrifices they made… the devotion they showed… and the lessons they learned.

Until next time, keep some powder dry.

Brannon Howse using GOIP Tech and STRETCH Technology’s Hellescope discernmentalizes that Emergents are actually Atheistic Communists:

Emerging Trouble

The pastors and authors of one of America’s fastest growing spiritual movements, the Emergent Church, sing the praises of socialism. As I’ll explain in more detail later, the Emergent Church champions the neo-Marxist call for a utopian society through spiritual evolution where good and evil merge to form a “better” third option. This idea derives from the belief system of philosophers such as Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel and finds its contemporary manifestation in the “Third Way” movement of Bill Clinton and Tony Blair. In the Third Way, capitalism, socialism, and communism merge to form a misanthropic combination of the three. This blending is now represented in the terms “the New World Order” and “the new enlightenment.”

The Third Way promotes Communitarianism, a toxic blend of communism, socialism, atheism, and Cosmic Humanism. Communitarians believe in universal health care, government-subsidized housing and education, radical environmentalism, Fabian socialism, and the like.

An article on the website of the Democratic Leadership Council explains how Clinton and Blair have promoted Third Way thinking across the globe:

On Sunday, April 25, 1999, President Clinton and the DLC hosted a historic roundtable discussion, “The Third Way: Progressive Governance for the 21st Century, “with five world leaders including British PM Tony Blair, German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, Dutch PM Wim Kok, and Italian PM Massimo D’Alema, the First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton and DLC President Al From.[4]

Starting with Bill Clinton’s Presidential campaign in 1992, Third Way thinking is reshaping progressive politics throughout the world. Inspired by the example of Clinton and the New Democrats, Tony Blair in Britain led a revitalized New Labour party back to power in 1997. The victory of Gerhard Shroeder and the Social Democrats in Germany the next year confirmed the revival of center-left parties which either control or are part of the governing coalition forming throughout the European Union. From Latin America to Australia and New Zealand, Third Way ideas also are taking hold.

Not to be hoodwinked by the window dressing of Third Way advocates, however, Vaclav Klaus, prime minister of the Czech Republic, warns against the real future it offers: “The Third Way is the fastest route to the Third World.”[5] But that seems to be where communitarians want to take us.

Grave Influence: 21 Radicals and Their Worldviews that Rule America from the Grave

This is it, the one book you need to read if you want to understand the big picture, connect all the dots, and understand current times, and future events and trends that will be unfolding. This ground-breaking book by best-selling author Brannon Howse is the result of thousands of hours of research over many years and is must reading for every teenager and adult.

Brannon reveals how the worldviews of 21 dead people are still influencing every aspect of American life and vying for the hearts and minds of adults and students. Whether we are discussing, law, science, economics, history, family, social issues, education or religion, the people and worldviews seeking to further their agenda in these disciplines are almost always connected back to four major forces. Brannon reveals the connection between occultism/pagan spirituality, the apostate church, the educational establishment and government/corporations.

Through this book you will come to understand the oppositions worldview, heroes, goals, strategies, masking terms, networks and targets. Those who share the worldviews of these 21 enemies of our constitutional republic and Biblical worldview do not want their agenda and its consequences to be revealed to the American people. Above all, they do not want us to equip and train our children and grandchildren with a Biblical worldview by which to recognize, reject, and fight against their seductive and destructive lies. This book will equip you to do just that as Brannon gives specific and pro-active responses you can take to make this the finest hour for the American church.

Here is the list of twenty-one for which Brannon has dug up worldview facts you must know and prepare to oppose:
Saul Alinsky, Karl Marx, John Dewey, John Maynard Keynes, Aldous Huxley, Charles Darwin, Friedrich Nietzsche, Margaret Sanger, William James, Alice Bailey, Helen Schuman, Sigmund Freud, Alfred Kinsey, Benjamin Bloom, B.F.
Congratulations to the America people. You have successfully elected the one person that can, and w

Congratulations to the America people. You have successfully elected the one person that can, and will, completely destroy the Constitution. Thanks to electing Obama, we are losing all our freedoms one by one. The government now controls our energy usage thanks to Cap and Trade. The government now controls our thoughts and the expression of those thoughts thanks to the Hate Crimes legislation. The government will soon control our choice of doctors, medical procedures, and general lifestyles thanks to the health reform bill.

Is this the change that you wanted America? For all the faults that George Bush had, he wasn’t intentionally trying to destroy the foundation of this nation. Obama is doing this on purpose. Having grown up surrounded by communists he was doomed to at least lean in that direction. So it is no surprise that with every situation that comes up, he looks to his communistic philosophies for the answer. In every case, he is wrong. Communism does not work. Just look at the fall of the Soviet Union and the horrible conditions in Cuba as examples of how bad communism can turn out. Even China has started to implement more capitalistic solutions to problems because the old communistic approach doesn’t work.

I read an article this past week about a “Constitutional Congress” meeting in Illinois. This meeting had a lot of people with a large range of differing philosophies, but one major goal. They want to preserve the original intent of our founding fathers. They want to resurrect the Constitution. They drafted a document that restricts the federal government from stealing our freedoms. Especially our freedom of speech, religion, and gun ownership. The document also calls the Patriot Act unconstitutional along with all these energy initiatives and the health care reform. I agree with most of what they came up with but I don’t understand how it can make a difference. Unless the American people start demanding that their representatives actually represent them in Washington, congress will just keep doing what they have been doing this past year. How can we actually implement and ratify the document that was produced?

The only solutions to our issues are voting out the current representatives or impeaching them. I think we need to start impeachment proceedings. Maybe if one or two get impeached, the rest will finally start to pay attention. I would prefer to vote them out of office, but that would mean putting up with a lot of them for another couple of years.

The only other possibility is the Supreme Court. If our current justices would actually do their job, none of these pieces of legislation would make it into law. Since every single one of these bills undermines something in the constitution, the Supreme Court needs to strike them down and declare them unconstitutional. But they have made it abundantly clear that they do not want to hear anymore cases related to our first amendment rights. They recently chose not to hear a case concerning a valedictorian’s right to mention God in their commencement speech. By refusing this case, they allowed a blatant violation of an individual’s right to free speech. This is inexcusable.

Our country is in a world of hurt right now and unless we act soon to take our country back from these communists, we will lose our country for good. Come on people wake up and fight for this country and the constitution.

Did nearly three thousand men, women and children die a horrible, burning or crushing death that day, or didn’t they?

And I’m supposed to care that a copy of the Koran was ‘desecrated’ when an overworked American soldier kicked it or got it wet?….Well, I don’t. I don’t care at all.

I’ll start caring when Osama bin Laden turns himself in and repents for incinerating all those innocent people on 9/11.

I’ll care about the Koran when the fanatics in the Middle East start caring about the Holy Bible, the mere possession of which is a crime in Saudi Arabia

I’ll care when these thugs tell the world they are sorry for chopping off Nick Berg’s head while Berg screamed through his gurgling slashed throat..

I’ll care when the cowardly so-called ‘insurgents’ in Iraq come out and fight like men instead of disrespecting their own religion by hiding in mosques.

I’ll care when the mindless zealots who blow themselves up in search of nirvana care about the innocent children within range of their suicide …

I’ll care when the American media stops pretending that their First Amendment liberties are somehow derived from international law instead of the United States Constitution’s Bill of Rights.

In the meantime, when I hear a story about a brave Marine roughing up an Iraqi terrorist to obtain information, know this: I don’t care.

When I see a fuzzy pho to of a pile of naked Iraqi prisoners who have been humiliated in what amounts to a college-hazing incident, rest assured: I don’t care..

When I see a wounded terrorist get shot in the head when he is told not to move because he might be booby-trapped, you can take it to the bank: I don’t care.

When I hear that a prisoner, who was issued a Koran and a prayer mat, and fed ’special’ food that is paid for by my tax dollars, is complaining that his holy book is being ‘mishandled,’ you can absolutely believe in your heart of hearts: I don’t care.

And oh, by the way, I’ve noticed that sometimes it’s spelled ‘Koran’ and other times ‘Quran.’ Well, Jimmy Crack Corn and-you guessed it-I don’t care!!

‘If we ever forget that we’re One Nation Under God, then we will be a nation gone under’ -Ronald Reagan

One last thought for the day:

In case we find ourselves starting to believe all the Anti-American sentiment and negativity, we should remember England ’s Prime Minister Tony Blair’s words during a recent interview. When asked by one of his Parliament members why he believes so much in America , he said: ‘A simple way to take measure of a country is to look at how many want in.. And how many want out.’

This month, it’s been 20 years since the Berlin Wall came down and the Iron Curtain of Communism over Russia and Eastern Europe.

I don’t know if you are old enough (anyone over 30) to remember when Russia and Eastern Europe comprised the world’s largest prison right behind the “People’s Republic” of China, but, it was a time fear to live in the US. It was worse than even the events of 9/11.

There was a fear of imminent Nuclear War. The early 1980s were a time of anxiety as the arms race between the US and the former Soviet Union continued and President Reagan said things like the Soviet Union was the “evil empire” and books and movies depicted very realistic Nuclear War scenarios. I once heard the local test siren go off one week shortly after reading a book and seeing a movie about nukes, and I literally thought the Russians were attacking! I thought it was only a matter of time that one side or the other would do something stupid and the situation would degenerate into the end of life on Earth very quickly.

When the Wall came down in 1989 along with the freeing of Eastern Europe and later Russia from Communism it was like a blessing to those who can still remember it. It was a reprieve from the constant fear of “war” and the end of half of Europe being under a dictatorship so huge and pervasive it seemed it would never end.

For me, the joy did not last as my targetting was just gearing up then, and I was made so miserable and un-free by tiny gradations day by day I did not feel the joy. Soon, my life got so dark I even envied the people in the former Iron Curtain countries even though I did not know the source of the shadow.

I new and sinister idea just occurred to me. What if the “Wall Came Down” not because “freedom” had won over “oppression” but that the technology for total world tracking of each and every individual on Earth had become a reality so the tyrants of the Eastern Bloc thought it safe to let the little citizens out of their cages? In other words, “freedom” had died in the “free” countries (where it did not really even exist for many even before then) so it was “safe” to let oppressed people to have free run of the cage that had become Earth.

In other words contained Communism morphed into world Fascism. In essence, totalitarianism with shopping malls.

Many long term targets noticed their targetting starting around the late 80s/early 90s term of Dubya’s father, number 41. Mine started right around the time the “election season” was starting about a year before the 1988 election. I’m thinking the “End of Communism” was a planned event by the globalists so the little suckers like you and me could think “freedom” won over oppression.

It didn’t. For the first time, I think, the perp controllers had the system in place to track anyone anytime anywhere and read their mind as well. No need for an “arms race” or a “Cold War”. Arab terrorists replaced the face of the enemy for most “free” people and the transition was as smooth as butter. Now, they are the enemies to fear and flag wave over.

Who will be the enemy of the future? Us. Ordinary citizens selected and persecuted at first in secret and then everywhere. In a way, we already are the “enemy” of all the people. We are selected and harassed and tortured without a reason, without any charges being brought against us and without any recourse or even an opportunity to tell our stories in a court of law. We are charged, convicted and sentenced to a very dark restricted “life” even before we know what’ s happening. Soon, the whole world will be under this sort of surveillance/punishment/reward scheme with variations. The threat of total targetting (like we get where we have no friends anywhere) will keep them in line along with the threat of concentration camps or whatever else they come up with. Only the citizen spies and “party members” will have it a little better.

After that, the devil will set up his world leader.

Black Market Signals Vietnam Dong Devaluation Is Just Beginning
By Beth Thomas

Nov. 26 (Bloomberg) — Vietnam, struggling to control accelerating inflation and a widening trade deficit, will keep weakening the dong after devaluing the currency for the first time since December, black-market rates and forwards show.

The central bank said yesterday it will permit the currency to decline a further 3 percent today, after it fell 5.4 percent in the past year. The unofficial rate offered at gold shops in Ho Chi Minh City is 9.7 percent weaker than yesterday’s spot- market price of 17,886 per dollar. Contracts based on the exchange rate in 12 months imply a 15.6 percent depreciation.

Inflation accelerated to a six-month high of 4.35 percent in November from a year earlier and the nation’s balance of payments worsened as exports dropped and rising commodity prices swelled the cost of imports. The dong has slumped 22 percent in the past decade and the government risks “damaged credibility” by allowing further losses, according to Standard Chartered Plc.

“Whenever you devalue a currency, there is general expectation for more,” said Thomas Harr, a foreign-exchange strategist in Singapore at Standard Chartered, which predicts a decline to 19,000 by the end of next year. “The key challenge is the widening trade deficit and slowing inflows from foreign direct investment, remittances and equity inflows.”

The State Bank of Vietnam decided to lower the reference rate 5 percent to 17,961 against the dollar, close to yesterday’s spot rate. That was the first such move since Dec. 25. The dong’s decline will be limited as policy makers also narrowed its trading range to 3 percent from the daily rate, from a 5 percent band adopted March 23.

by the Republican Communist Network

It is now 20 years since the collapse of the Berlin Wall. For most people this signalled the end of communism. However, there has always been another view, which understands that the USSR and its satellites and emulators were never communist, socialist or workers’ states. They represented the negation of communism. The socialist transition is not based upon ‘The State’ taking over the functions of private capital, nor ‘The Party’ taking over the functions of a self-organised working class.

Today we face the worst economic crisis for nearly eighty years, accompanied by growing environmental deterioration, and increased powerlessness and loss of hope. Yet the majority of socialists today are not prepared to make the case for a viable alternative social order to get us beyond the ever-deepening capitalist crisis. Often we get little more than vague populist sloganeering – ‘Make Poverty History’ or ‘Make Greed History’. To most workers these sound as hollow as the world of ‘virtual reality’ pushed by the corporate media to divert our attention from the very mundane, or sometimes, desperate reality, we face in our everyday lives. Furthermore, calls for people’s largely passive support through five minutes spent at the polling station can seem a poor alternative, even compared to the promise of ‘five minutes of fame’ in the corporate media spotlight.

Pushing for more state intervention (never asking whose state they seeking to further strengthen), or opting for purely local initiatives (which may be desirable, but limited in their impact) can never break the overall control of corporate capital and the even bleaker future its continued rule will bring to our world. We need to highlight the impasse their corporate imperialism has brought us to, and the grave threats involved in all attempts to bolster their capitalist order. We need to think internationally.

Rosa Luxemburg once said that if we fail to overturn capitalism, we would face ‘Socialism or Barbarism’. Ever worsening exploitation and oppression, two devastating world wars, countless brutal imperial interventions and recurrent economic crises, mean we should update this to say ‘Genuine Communism, or Barbarism – if you are lucky’.

Genuine communism means complete human emancipation and liberation, where society is organised on the basis of ‘From each according to their abilities, to each according to their needs’, and ‘Where the free development of each is the condition of the free development of all.’ The socialist transition involves workers creating this new society using new forms of association in a global commune. We need to build upon workers’, peasants’ and indigenous people’s current resistance and outline a communist vision which develops their independent class struggles and offers humanity a real alternative.

This is why, the RCN, with the support of The Commune, has organised The Global Commune day school so that socialists today can lift their sights higher, and begin to seriously discuss how we can break free of the legacy of ‘official’ and ‘dissident’ Communism, and begin to create the type of society that we wish to live in, if humanity is to have a real future. The fact that he is ignoring the revelations coming out of East Anglia makes him look oh so much more omnipotent.

I’m sure the numbers came from Holdren or Hansen, who by February should either have hanged themselves or be responding to lawsuits about their complicity in the global warming scam that was finally uncovered by the CRU data release.

But Omaba is not alone, sundry other Ecotards and AGW zombies are releasing papers they’ve had planned for months to gin up more AGW catastrophe hysteria right before Copenhagen. The fact that their cause has been reveled as a titanic hoax isn’t going to stop them now.

On November 9th, 2009 the College Republicans at UCSD commemorated the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall by building their own wall and displaying it prominently on Library Walk, the main walkway on campus. On the Eastern side were facts and figures about the evils of communism, as well as quotes by well known communist leaders. The Western side was available for people to demonstrate the free expression of ideas by allowing students to spray paint it.

I’m including the article that will be printed in the issue of the California Review that will be available tomorrow.

Also I have included a link for the pictures taken at the event:
http://s639.photobucket.com/albums/uu119/californiareview/UCSD%20Berlin%20Wall/

A Celebration of Freedom
Inez Feltscher, Content Editor

Twenty years ago, on November 9th, 1989, the Berlin Wall – the concrete barrier that divided the Communist world from the free – was torn apart by East and West Berliners in a tearful reunion. The fall of the Wall represented a hope for freedom, which for East Germans, and the people in the Eastern Bloc, would have been unthinkable just a decade earlier.

In 1946, in a speech at Westminister College in Missouri, Winston Churchill spoke prophetically when he declared that the Soviet threat would be the next global conflict. “From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic an ‘iron curtain’ has descended across the Continent.” In 1961, the iron curtain became physically manifest in the form of the Berlin Wall, which encircled West Berlin and separated it from Communist East Berlin. For the next 28 years, the Wall became the defining symbol of Communist oppression to millions in the Eastern Bloc.

The Wall, officially called the “Anti-Fascist Bulwark” by the East German Communist government, was initially erected to stop the flood of emigration out of the GDR and into West Berlin, from which émigrés could continue on to anywhere in the free world. So many talented, intelligent and skilled people were leaving the GDR that the government feared a “brain drain” would deprive East Germany of all its bright young minds – those who were, or would become, the GDR’s teachers, engineers, doctors, lawyers, scientists and other important workers. The Wall was built, and corresponding statutes prohibiting emigration enacted, to try to stem the flow of refugees escaping from East Germany.

Initial constructions of the Wall went up in the middle of the night, and its consequences immediately came to bear on millions of ordinary East (and West) German citizens. Many families were split apart, prevented from visiting each other by the Wall, while others, who worked in West Berlin, merely lost their jobs and livelihoods.

But not all people were deterred from escaping the oppressive Communist regime in East Germany by the Wall’s armed guard towers, anti-vehicle strips, barbed wire, attack dogs and “fakir beds” of nails. During its 28 years in existence, over 5,000 people managed to escape over, through, or under the Berlin Wall, using a number of astoundingly creative methods. Successful attempts were made, among other techniques, by the following: jumping over the wall from nearby high-rise apartment buildings into nets on the Western side, flying narrowly over it in homemade ultralight airplanes, drifting over in hot air balloons, tunneling underneath the Wall, and escaping through pre-existing sewers. My personal favorite is a group of four who escaped by driving a specially-modified sports car at the barrier checkpoint, the windshield and roof of which was designed to come off easily upon impact with the guard rail. The four just lay flat and continued straight through into freedom.

On a more sobering note, not all escape attempts were successful, and failure often meant death at the hands of the border guards. An estimated 200 people attempted to cross, and died in their attempts. The most famous case of these was 18 year old Peter Fechter, who bled out from his bullet wounds in the so-called “death strip,” while people in the West could only look on in horror. Fechter’s death was captured and televised in the whole Western world by the onlooking media.

America’s response to the Berlin Wall was initially muted. Although the Wall violated the Potsdam agreements, which gave the Allies a voice in the government of all of Berlin, President Kennedy recognized the unfortunate reality of the situation – in 1961, the US was nowhere ready to go to war with the Soviet Union for the sake of the East Berliners and other Eastern peoples. This containment-style policy remained more or less in effect until, in 1987, President Ronald Reagan voiced, for the first time, the US’s loud and vigorous opposition to the tyranny that had been imposed on Berlin, and the entire Eastern Bloc, by the Soviet Union. In front of the Brandenburg Gate, he declared our intent to advocate for freedom everywhere, even in previously “untouchable” Soviet Eastern territories. “We believe that… the advance of human liberty can only strengthen the cause of world peace…. General Secretary Gorbachev, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity…if you seek liberalization, come here to this gate. Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate. Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!”

An Italian Minister has recently called to reduce lunch breaks to increase productivity (News results for Italian lunch break). In a world where capitalism reigns, and self-got-gain is the only gain; what possible reason could there be to expect anyone to even consider productivity for the sake of the economy? Isn’t this the core principle of communism? If it has got to the point where we need to forfeit our lunch to boost production, then who is this production benefiting? Having a high GDP is obviously a good thing for individuals, but if to get the GDP high enough we need to stop eating – there must be something very wrong with the way this is going…A high GDP really isn’t the aim of an individual it is the by-product of entrepreneurial activity.

Part 20 Last time, Squirrely and Monkeyy were about to interview Karl Marx for Squirrely’s journalis

Part 20

Last time, Squirrely and Monkeyy were about to interview Karl Marx for Squirrely’s journalism assignment, and Cowhidey had just been dumped by his girlfriend of three weeks.

Cowhidey sat on a bar stool and stared dejectedly at a baseball game on one of the various sporting televisions aligning the bar’s ceiling. And believe it or not, it wasn’t the fact that baseball is the most depressing, boring sports in the world that brought about this feeling of dejectedness. No, it was due to his recent break up from his one true love, the canceled Twitter page of Miley Cyrus.

Cowidey took a last swig from his beer (Sam Adams in case you were wondering), and cried a little inside as another fly ball sailed into God knows where for the last God knows how many times that inning.

“Can I get another?” he asked the barkeep.

“Coming right up,” said the barkeep as a slight pressure fell on Cowhidey’s shoulder. Cowhidey turned around to find Froggy pulling up a stool next to him.

“One for me too please,” he said.

“How’d you know I’d be here?” Cowhidey asked Froggy.

“Because this is where you always go when you break up with a girl,” said Froggy.

“Ohh…” said Cowhidey as he replaced his empty bottle with a fresh one. “How’d you know we would break up?”

“Because… because you two were just too different to last very long.”

“I thought we’d be together for the rest of our lives.”

“Yeah, well- it happens. Besides, at least now you don’t have to watch anymore Broadway shows.”

“Haha, yeah Broadway does suck!”

“And there are plenty of other girls out there, right? And despite your lack of a job or life motivation in general, you never seem to lack at finding them,” said Froggy just as a chew stick girl came up to Cowhidey.

“Hi, my name’s Beef Flavor Sticky. What’s yours?” she said.

“Which is kinda annoying,” Froggy finished with a mumble.

Meanwhile, Squirrely was organizing her notes for her interview with Karl Marx. Squirrely stood in the middle of the living room while Monkeyy took a seat near a paper cluttered desk.

“Sorry,” said Karl Marx referring to his desk, “I’ve just been busy lately. Would you two like some tea?”

“No thanks,” Squirrely answered for the both of them. “Got to get this done and run along. You know how time is.”

Karl Marx smiled and sat at his desk.

“Okay, I just have three questions for ya,” said Squirrely. “One, what’s your favorite color?”

“Blue lavender.”

“Question two, what’s your favorite food?”

“Kiwi pie.”

“And three, what’s your favorite season?”

“Autumn.”

“Good!” said Squirrely to a very confused Monkeyy. “Looks like we’re done here. Thank you Mr. Marx, this will surely get me a good grade on my journalism assignment. Let’s go, Monkeyy.”

“Wait wait wait!” said Monkeyy as Squirrely was quickly walking out the door. “Hold on! You have the chance to talk to the man that influences the Communism revolution, and that’s what you ask him?!”

“Yep,” said Squirrely as she waved goodbye, and hurried back onto the foggy London street.

“But- why?”

“Because,” Squirrely stopped and rolled her head at Monkeyy, “I’m not trying to change the world, Monkeyy. I’m trying to get an A in journalism.”

Next time, Cowhidey searches for a new girlfriend in all the wrong places, and Squirrely and Monkeyy get into trouble.
