Calling CCP to free Liu

The Liu Xiaobo incident is a move that will shake the western world, it is a move that will spark much debate and diplomatic crossfire, and it is a move of no choice. This article has two parts- pure facts and an interpretation of the incident from the Chinese’s perspective.

Part I: Pure Facts

Chinese Dissident- Liu Xiaobo

Liu Xiabo is a writer, academic and a prominent Chinese dissident. He was detained in 2008, just before the release of an unusually direct appeal for more civil rights in China he co-authored called Charter 08, signed by scores of China’s top intellectuals. He has been detained without charges for the past year after orchestrating the “Charter 08″ petition calling for democratic reforms and an end to one-party rule in China. On 25^th December 2009, he has been sentenced to 11 years of jail for “inciting subversion of state power”.

Responses from the Western Leaders

“Despite the great progress in other areas in the expression of views, I regret that the Chinese government still massively restricts press freedom,”

-German Chancellor Angela Merkel in a statement.

“The United States seeks positive relationships with China and Russia, and that means candid discussions of divergent views. In China, we call for protection of rights of minorities in Tibet and Xinxiang; for the rights to express oneself and worship freely; and for civil society and religious organizations to advocate their positions within a framework of the rule of law. And we believe strongly that those who advocate peacefully for reform within the constitution, such as Charter 2008 signatories, should not be prosecuted.”

Recalling China’s international human rights obligations, as well as the Chinese constitutional guarantees on freedom of expression, the EU calls on the Chinese government to unconditionally release Mr Liu Xiaobo and to end the harassment and detention of other signatories of Charter 08.

What is Charter 08?

Charter 08

The petition, initially signed by 300 academics but now by more than 10,000 people online, touched a nerve with China’s rulers, who have moved this year to tighten controls on many areas of civil life, including the internet, newspapers and independent lawyers.

The Charter echoed the “Charter 77″ of the Czech dissident Vaclav Havel which paved the way for the Velvet Revolution which swept away the Communist regime of what was then Czechoslovakia.

Mr Liu is the only Charter 08 signatory to face long-term detention, however several other prominent members reported suffering harassment at work and pressure to retract their sponsorship of the document.

One such was He Weifang, a prominent law professor who for 20 years has called openly for sweeping reforms to China’s legal system, and was “exiled” to a provincial university in China’s far-western province of Xinjiang, he believes as punishment for signing.

Asked why Charter 08 had provoked such a strong reaction when the government had tolerated similar criticisms from signatories individually, Professor He said the organised nature of the petition had frightened officials.

“I think I was tolerated as an individual, but Charter 08 was a co-ordinated, collective action and it was that element of organisation that provoked such a hostile reaction from the Party,” he said in an interview with The Telegraph last April. “Newspapers that used to publish strong articles arguing for reform no longer dare.”

Reporter asked the spokesperson of China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs why are diplomats from the Western countries refused to attend the trial of Liu Xiaobo and if China has any regulations that prohibit foreign diplomats from attending the trial.

Spokesperson emphasized Liu is a Chinese citizen, and that this is China’s internal affairs such that statements issued by foreign diplomats on releasing Liu is intervening China’s domestic affairs.

I have always been supportive of China and its government—CCP. I believe that the government has its own difficulties, notably from its low level of response to the western world’s criticism. As I carry out an internet search on the subject, I am surprised that only three web sites provide relevant information, and two of them have their content deleted and only one offers a very short summary of what has happened to Liu Xiao Bo.

Part II: What’s the CCP’s stake in this incident?

Despite the lack of Chinese reports on this issue, I thought I could piece some fragments together. The most obvious message sent by Liu’s trial is that China is a country without democracy; some at the extreme will note that the Chinese are being repressed by the government! To say it is hogwash will be bias, but these arguments are totally correct either. I shall first examine the Chinese Communist Party’s stand on bringing democracy to China.

I thought this article will be able to give us a clear on the progress of democracy in China. In 2005, the Chinese Central Party’s school published an article titled “China’s Construction of Political Democracy”. The original article is available here; if you can know Mandarin, check it out. If not, I will just briefly list down the central arguments raised by this article.

• The article’s introduction stressed the difference in culture and values between China and the West (or the West and the rest of the world). As a result, the process of fighting for and developing democracy within various nations will be different. For China, CCP needs to innovate the Chinese-style of developing democracy.
• CCP as the central force of uniting China’s 1.3bn population and constructing China’s democracy.
• The construction of democracy is built upon economic development. This is the same for the West’s market oriented political system. To ensure justice and fairness, China emphasizes on the use of public funding on any democracy activity and rejects the use of private finances.
• China’s approach to developing democracy ought to be a bottom-up and not top-down like that of the West. For example, England’s capitalist revolution, France’s bourgeoisie revolution. These revolutions were launched by the “top”. Upon the success of these revolutions, the “top” brought elections to the general public. China has a different situation—China’s socialism was brought in during an era of semi-colonialism and semi-feudalism, time and conditions for conduction general elections have yet to be reaped.
• In consideration of contemporary situation, Deng Xiaoping said in 1987 that China mainland will only have general election after 50 years. For now, elections can only be carried out at the villages level. With China’s development and progress, grassroots democracy will expand, citizens will be able to participate in politics through various channels.
• CCP will incorporate Democracy’s theories, thoughts and system into its administration.

I hereby apologize for any mistakes in my translation. However, the message is clear and the argument is persuasive, to me at least. The idea is in much aligned with my stand on Liu’s sentence. The following are the main reasons for Liu’s 11 years’ sentence:

Firstly, Liu chose the wrong timing to publish Charter 08.
The main economic goal of the Chinese government in 2008 and in particular, 2009 is to “protect 8”—to ensure a minimum economic growth of 8%. Such an economic growth during a global economic recession is a very ambitious goal, even to developing countries but why did government give itself such a mission that in the eyes of the developed countries it is virtually impossible?

The Chinese government clearly recognize years of grievances it has accumulated at the grassroots level as it pursues economic goals. Social problems are clearly not the priority. There were also calls for political changes. However, it has been fast economic growth that offset these complaints. With economic growth, people’s standard of living increases such that problems in other sectors can be eased. Failure to achieve 8% economic growth will lead to social pandemonium especially from the migrant workers. This is how dire the situation is.

Amidst the current economic recession, society is not that peaceful either. The XinJiang riot has really caused the Communist Central Party to have some headaches. As the incidents’ repercussions die down, the government will seek all means to avoid further turmoil in the society.

On such an occasion, Liu chose to publish Charter 08; on such an occasion, his Charter 08 created repercussion among the Chinese people, whether they support his ideas or not. Liu’s choice of timing to announce his brave ideas is a clear challenge to the Chinese community party. He threatens social stability and repercussion caused by him must by all means allay.

Some may argue that the CCP is just totalitarian and resistant to voices from the general public. If that’s how you think, then you are wrong. Over the years, the Chinese government has implemented a series of reforms to bring in democracy. Experiments have been conducted at the villages and counties. During last year’s National Congress Meeting, premier Wen Jia Bao followed closely to the complaints submitted by the general public. A totalitarian state like Iran will not do so, even at the cost of being at loggerheads with the international community; Myanmar will not do so, at the cost of losing lives of hundreds due to typhoon a few years ago by rejecting international aid. I would say if Liu submit his petition during a peaceful time, his chance of getting his ideas listened by the party will be greater.

Secondly, the involvement of the Western powers complicated the situation.
China has always disliked being monitored and interfered by the outside world, in particular the western powers on its internal affairs. Examples include the Xinjiang Riot, Tibetan protest last year and other “human rights” issues. China deemed such interference as a threat to national sovereignty. The Chinese government’s attitude towards the opinions of the developed countries is actually the confluence of two factors. It will not be difficult to see that the government’s attitude does represent that of the general public to a certain extend.

The first reason for the Chinese’s hostility is the current ongoing patriotism among the people. After years of lagging behind other nations, China has stand up. It organized Beijing Olympics in 2008 and World Expo Shanghai in 2009. Now, its military power is only after the U.S. and it is close to displace Japan as the world’s second largest economy. Ask yourself, if your country has achieved that much, will you be proud of her? Patriotism within the nation has reached an unprecedented level. How can the government and its people, in fact, tolerate reprimands from other “inferior” nations such as the U.S. where China is its biggest creditor?

On National Day, China demonstrates its military power

The second reason has to do with China’s history. During the Manchu dynasty, China has been invaded by an alliance of eight western powers. Hong Kong, Taiwan and Machau have all subsequently been lost to these powers. After WWI, instead of returning the administration right of Shandong back to China, the U.S. promised German’s ruling area to Japan instead. All these are unacceptable and cannot be easily forgotten. Despite China’s economy opening up, the Chinese people will not let go of China’s humiliating history. In short, the involvement of the western powers in Liu’s trial has only worsened the situation where the authority and the patriots view Liu being buttressed by the West (which is true) and is becoming a traitor to the country.

Thirdly, democracy experiments are yet completed.
It is wrong to day China is undemocratic. Or least to say it will forever be undemocratic. Since the era of Deng Xiaoping, CCP has become interested in democracy. As aforementioned, Deng proposed to introduce democracy at a bigger scale only 50 years from 1987. From Jiang Zemin to Hu Jintao, the number of democracy experiments being carried out in villages has increased. And, more than 10 years after China regain its rule over Hong Kong, the Hong Kong people are able to have general elections and choose their administrator directly by 2012, latest 2016. The progress in democratizing China is tangible and undeniable. As Liu’s Charter 08 called for too many changes, CCP is not ready to accept them and deemed them as too radical.

In 2008 and 2009, too many chaotic events have taken place. CCP viewed tightening control as its priority for the time being. But it may not be persuasive enough to convince the rightfulness in giving Liu 11 years sentence, which is too long. I could only offer two types of explanation—culture (as China has been traditionally harsh towards crime) and symbolism in the sentence.

It will be too naïve to say the problem Liu raised is only freedom of expression. Liu’s ideas represent a deluge of western ideas into China and surge in number of people finding these ideas appealing. After all, we have to remember that China is a communist country. It is embracing capitalism but making it swallowing too many radical ideas at the same ideas might be just too much for it. From CCP’s perspective, freedom of speech is a beginning; what comes next might be spreading of ideas, protests, revolutions and social pandemonium. Liu’s sentence is symbolic in the sense that is serves as a reminder for other dissidents of not going too far. Eleven years of jail may give China eleven years of political and social stability. In 2012, as Mr. Hu Jintao steps down, the transition of presidency is yet confirmed to be a smooth one, stability is indeed the priority. In eleven years, China will have a new generation of educated leaders, it will get some ideas from its democracy experiments carried out in mainland’s villages and Hong Kong. In eleven years, China is sure to have overtaken Japan as the world’s largest economy. In eleven years, perhaps China will be more ready to accept democracy than the 2037 deadline set by Deng Xiaoping.

Eventually, China has its own approach to democracy. In the past century, there were hardly any new political ideologies. All we are familiar with today is either democracy or communism. They are being viewed as the extremes on the scales, almost. In my perspective, the West sees the communists’ method of democratizing the country as merely another move to reinforce the central rule. However, the West fails to realize that China might be developing a new political ideology of a new model– China model. In the 21st century, democratizing a nation should be in a peaceful manner, and not the bloody manner as that of U.S. in 1778, France in 1789 or Russia in 1917. China’s approach to democracy may be an approach and seeks to avoid smooth transition of political ideology, even if its rate is deemed too slow to the West.

Thank God for Global Warming.  Here in Dallas we have just had the first White Christmas since 1926.  Imagine how cold it would be if there were no Global Warming.  Why we would have glaciers year around and barbecued polar bears!!!

Abolish the EPA

In so far as the Environmental Protection Agency has threatened the lives and livelihood of the people of the United States and committed various and sundry usurpations to wit:

1)  Asserted the right to impose Draconian restrictions on otherwise legal activities

2) Show itself to be the biggest bunch of dolts on the planet by declaring the natural product of respiration a poisonous and lethal gas

3) Insisted that it has these powers without direct congressional authority and approval

Resolved that the EPA be abolished forthwith and be replaced by copy of the Communist Manifesto in a dirty toilet.

Insofar as various Socialist, Communists and Marxist associated with the EPA and radical, red environmentalism abhor living in a capitalist country they should granted safe passage to North Korea.  A country much more to their liking and they should be put on watch lists and never allowed to re-enter the United States.

In some cultures a little hair of the dog is considered a delicacy. It turns out that the environmentalists have taken out their carbon calculators again and they figure your dog is worse for the environment than your SUV.

Does it occur to you that environmental types don’t like ANYTHING you do? Maybe they just want you do die? Well at least we have a government that knows how to make that happen. Public option. Can you say that?

But I digress, it turns out that because your evil, evil dog eats meat it is killing the earth.

If simply being a carnivore is killing the planet then are they arguing that all killer whales, lions tigers and wolves should be wiped out? Well no. Only the pet killer whales are evil. The ones in the wild are not.

I wonder how the planet manages to survive polar bears. Oh, I remember, natural processes like eating meat are okay unless man is in the mix.

Grandma, it’s you they don’t like. And you little dog too. Be Red and Expert. Be a good little communist or they are coming for your freaking dog.

White House Christmas Ornament Troubles Christians

A recent report that an ornament adorned with the face of a Chinese communist leader is hanging on a Christmas tree in the White House has troubled some Christians.

A recent report that an ornament adorned with the face of a Chinese communist leader is hanging on a Christmas tree in the White House has troubled some Christians.

BigGovernment.com released photos revealing a Mao Zedong ornament reportedly on the tree in the Blue Room. Other pictured ornaments depict transvestite Hedda Lettuce and Mount Rushmore with President Obama’s head added to it.

“I am stunned and profoundly disappointed by reports of an ornament with the image of Mao Zedong hanging on the White House Christmas tree,” said the Rev. Patrick J. Mahoney of the Christian Defense Coalition, based in Washington, D.C. “It is hard to understand during this most holy season that President Obama would display an ornament of a man who brutalized and murdered his own people and his legacy still haunts the Chinese and the world.”

Mahoney called the ornament “a direct slap in the face to Christians who honor Christ.”

“The message of Christ on that Christmas morning was ‘peace on earth, goodwill toward man,’” he noted. “Yet the White House tramples that glorious message, with the image of a dictator who only brought tyranny and oppression to millions.”

Mahoney says he contacted the White but was told that they could neither confirm if the ornament was on the tree or if it had been removed.

Brandi Swindell of Generation Life joined Mahoney in protesting the Zedong decoration.

“I went to China last year to speak out against the human rights abuses against the Chinese people that began under the regime of Mao Zedong,” said Swindell. “Chairman Mao oversaw the deaths of 50,000,000 of his own countrymen under one of the most brutal governments in history. The policies and government he put in place still continue to crush, trample and terrorize the wonderful people of China.”

Photos of the decorations were released after allegations that the White House sent a letter telling artists not to send ornaments with a religious theme and that Christmas trees would be called “Holiday” trees.

According to FactCheck.org, the allegations are false. Semonti Stephens, deputy press secretary to Mrs. Obama, told FactCheck that “the Christmas tree will be called the Christmas tree.” Stephens also denied that a letter banning religious-themed ornaments was sent out.

This year, the White House’s 27 Christmas trees have been decorated with hundreds of ornaments left over from previous administrations. The ornaments were sent to 60 local community groups throughout the country to decorate, paying tribute to a local landmark, as Michelle Obama explained earlier.

It would be nice to hear an americans views on the matter, I am lead to believe even in the mainstream media that the current wars are not supported by the majority of americans, how would you react to operations in South America or Iran. How many more of your soldiers, who at the end of the day are just teenagers or young adults, are going to be killed in the name of free market capitalism. The exploitation of the occupied countries at the expense of american lives in exchange for profit.

The second part to the linked article is also very inspiring, every single time I have heard/read a Chavez speech he seems to talk absolute sense, and its true that although the US and European governments proclaim to be democratic, their recent actions by not being at all transparent about the COP15 meetings show their true colours.

Back to the menorah attack, it was led by a heavily bearded Christian Orthodox priest, followed by a 200 strong mob chanting anti-Semitic slogans. They ripped down a publicly displayed metal menorah and replaced it with a cross. What is new? Ultimately, they dumped the menorah upside-down at the base of a statue. While police was present, it did not intervene. The priest shouted that Jews try to “dominate the people” and that “the Jews can try to kill us, to traumatize our children.” This are old charges. How do the few remaining Moldovan Jews manage to do all these was not specified.

Gee, this is so much better than the vandals in Long Island, NY who actually threw a menorah in a pond…

In so far as the Environmental Protection Agency has threatened the lives and livelihood of the people of the United States and committed various and sundry usurpations to wit:

1)  Asserted the right to impose Draconian restrictions on otherwise legal activities

2) Show itself to be the biggest bunch of dolts on the planet by declaring the natural product of respiration a poisonous and lethal gas

3) Insisted that it has these powers without direct congressional authority and approval

Resolved that the EPA be abolished forthwith and be replaced by copy of the Communist Manifesto in a dirty toilet.

Insofar as various Socialist, Communists and Marxist associated with the EPA and radical, red environmentalism abhor living in a capitalist country they should granted safe passage to North Korea.  A country much more to their liking and they should be put on watch lists and never allowed to re-enter the United States.

In some cultures a little hair of the dog is considered a delicacy. It turns out that the environmentalists have taken out their carbon calculators again and they figure your dog is worse for the environment than your SUV.

Does it occur to you that environmental types don’t like ANYTHING you do? Maybe they just want you do die? Well at least we have a government that knows how to make that happen. Public option. Can you say that?

But I digress, it turns out that because your evil, evil dog eats meat it is killing the earth.

If simply being a carnivore is killing the planet then are they arguing that all killer whales, lions tigers and wolves should be wiped out? Well no. Only the pet killer whales are evil. The ones in the wild are not.

I wonder how the planet manages to survive polar bears. Oh, I remember, natural processes like eating meat are okay unless man is in the mix.

This federal PAC was started by three concerned Florida residents in response to Democratic Congressman Alan Grayson.

So what is Grayson’s response?  He asked US Attorney General Eric Holder to investigate the founder of the PAC, Angie Langley, for excersizing her pesky 1st amendment right to freedom of speech.  Come on Grayson!  Don’t you have better things to do like making policies that will create jobs, lower health care costs, or how about dealing with those wars in the Middle East?  Geez, I am so tired of the liberal fascists in DC!

Howdy, folks.

I recently began to work up some graphics for The Male Pattern Band, musical love-child of Chris McCrory; musician, production geek, wunderkind. The group’s fairly new on “the scene”, and not yet released anything officially, but I’ve gone ahead and started to produce some illustrations they might be using for posters and such in the future.  There’s some early demo’s worth checkin’ out HERE.

Running with the theme of pattern baldness, I picked out Communist whackjob Mao Tse-Tung and his incredible toilet bowl hairdo that still adorns many a wall in the Orient today. I’ve used the classic Red Propaganda-style portrait of Mao that hangs outside the Forbidden City for a couple of different images, and here’s one of ‘em.

I was just playing with a kind of silhouette portrait and then realised it had a lot in common with the now famous Obama “Yes We Can” portrait used in the 2008 U.S. presidential campaign. I already had an idea for the colour palette (unusual for me, colour ignorant as I am) and it’s sort of ended up like a cross between a Scooby Doo villain and those old animated Peter Lorre caricatures used in Warner Bros cartoons.

It turned out okay, I guess.

I am getting sick and tired of the local Shop-Mart workers not saying “Merry Christmas”!!  Who do they think they are?!

What is “Happy Holidays” anyway???????????

But I was really shocked to hear this phrase in a “Christmas” song that is real old and doesn’t mention the Christ at all!!!!!!  I discovered the source of this pagan expression and it goes all the way back to the 1940s to a evil man named Irving Berlin.

Apparently he was a left-wing commie agitator.  I heard somewhere that he was going to be brought before Senator McCarthy’s panel but he managed to weasel out somehow.  Of course, being Jewish, he doesn’t care about the birth of our Lord and wrote this politically correct, “let’s please everyone by avoiding Jesus”, socialist, pro-abortion theme song.

Maybe not so shocking is that many of those liberal Hollywood types participated in the desecration of this HOLY-day by singing Herr Berlin’s communist anthem.  Famous Satan worshippers such as Bing Crosby, Perry Como, and even Edie Gorme worshipped at the altar of political correctness!!

I now declare that this song by Berlin and all songs by these Obama-loving, tree-hugging, socialist scumbags be banned.

Let your local radio station know that you won’t tolerate this!!!
