Paul Ciuci: despre Teo Peter şi accidentul în care şi-a pierdut viaţa … a fost aşa…el a murit vineri spre sâmbătă … miercurea de dinaintea evenimentelor eram cu cei de la Talisman la Galaţi … aveam acolo un concert pe faleză … după ce am terminat, urma să plecăm înspre casă … ceea ce am şi făcut … urma să ne vedem în săptămâna următoare pentru un concert la Zalău.

Teo Peter pleca înspre Bucureşti unde avea festivalul acela de rock cu invitaţi de dincolo … urma să vină Carl Palmer cu trupa lui şi pe ei chiar aş fi vrut să-i văd … dar am plecat la Deva unde mă aştepta fiica mea, Vanessa …

Vineri noaptea eram cu un prieten la o pizzerie din oraşul Deva … când la ora 22,30 m-a sunat Teo Peter …Voia să-mi spună cât de fericit era că i-au ieşit toate foarte bine, oaspeţii au fost multumiţi, publicul superb … şi recitalul lui Palmer Band … super … era tare bucuros … l-am întrebat de unde mă sună … şi mi-a zis că de la Polivalentă şi că pleacă cu câţiva din cei de la organizare undeva să mănânce …

i-am zis: nu sta mult că mâine ai şi mai multă treabă fiind ultima zi din festival …

mi-a zis ok, vreau doar să mănânc ceva şi merg acasă să dorm pentru că sunt tare obosit … dar bucuros …

astea au fost ultimele cuvinte pe care mi le amintesc…

dimineaţă la ora 6 am primit un telefon de la Mariana, nevasta lui Leluţ care plângând mi-a spus că Teo Peter a murit ….

după o oră eram în maşină – plecam înspre Bucureşti şi tot timpul pe drum mi-am spus: nu-i adevărat nu mi se întâmpla mie … trebuie să fie o ştire falsă … poate-i doar în spital şi-şi va reveni …

am ajuns acolo … din păcate era cumplit de real totul … nu l-am putut vedea decat luni când era cineva de la medico-legală …acolo … l-am pus în sicriu .. .l-am dus eu şi cei care erau acolo … fratele lui Dorin … şi ceilalţi din jur … multă lume dar parcă eram în transă … l-a dus la Polivalentă pe catafalc … acolo unde cu 20 şi ceva de ani în urmă am debutat noi patru: Teo Peter, Costi, Eu şi Leluţ pe scena aceea imensă şi în faţa unui public superb …

CZB: Consideraţi drept modul în care a acţionat Statul american cu soldatul american vinovat de accident?

Paul Ciuci: nu comentez nici acum şi nici nu am făcut-o vreodată … sunt aşa de multe necunoscute în această poveste încât mă abţin să fac vreun comentariu … la timpul acela am trimis agenţiei Mediafax un comunicat în numele membrilor COMPACT despre poziţia noastră şi cred că a fost de ajuns … nu am răspuns nici celor care încercau să-şi rezolve propriile probleme la adăpostul dramaticei dispariţii a lui Teo Peter …

Dar dacă nu mă interesează poziţia statului american în acest caz … în schimb nu mă poate lăsa indiferent faptul că statul nostru român cel căruia îi datorăm devotament şi abnegaţie … nu a făcut nimic … decât vorbe sforăitoare în presă şi în prime time la televiziune … dacă vrei să-i spui lehamite la această atitudine … spune-i aşa …

Is the world made up of rectangles?   Of course it isn’t, but our digital cameras make us look at the world as if it was, because most digital camera sensors are rectangular.  

The sensor may be in the classic 35mm film format proportions of 1×1.5, or in the somewhat squarer 4×3 proportions of most compact digital cameras.  Whichever shape they are, it’s important to remember that you don’t have to leave your images in the shape that they come out of the camera.  You can often improve them by changing their proportions.  It’s called “cropping” and simply means that you take off some of the top/bottom or the side/sides. 

In this landscape photograph of the Corbiere lighthouse on the Channel Island of Jersey, I’ve left it as it came out of the camera.  I think it’s a good image, with the waves splashing, the light reflecting from the sea, and the feel of a black and white photograph.

With the next version of the image I’ve cropped off some of the top and bottom to make it longer and thinner.  It certainly helps, by taking away some of the grey sky at the top, and the grey sea at the bottom.

In this final version I’ve cropped off even more of the top and bottom.  This helps you concentrate on the really interesting central parts of the image, and fits with the horizontal elements of the rocks and the waves.

To me this is the most successful crop, but you may prefer it uncropped, or partly cropped.  That’s one of the great things about photography; it’s down to your individual preferences.

Try cropping your images!  You can use simple programs like Google Picasa, or more complex ones like Adobe Photoshop.  Whatever program you use, it’s best to save your cropped image with a different name to the original file so you can revisit the original later if you need to, or if you want to write a blog post about cropping images!

I decided to look through various Mozilla Firefox themes today since I've not changed my theme for over a month now. After doing a little bit of searching, I decided to make the theme Black Stratini my new default Firefox theme.

The light-colored original version of the Stratini theme is nice as well, but I went with the dark version of it since it goes nicely with my customized dark Windows XP theme.

I gave an interview yesterday for an article about The Compact, (buy nothing new movement) and holiday gift giving.

The reporter wanted to know what my Compact exceptions were, and I gave her my memorized list which is:

• Bras
• Underwear
• Socks
• Cat litter scoops
• Pyrex
• Harmonicas

This isn’t to say that I haven’t occasionally bought other items that were brand new, but this is the core list of my get out of Compact free things. The bra, socks, and underwear are pretty self explanatory, but the cat litter scoop and harmonica are from specific occasions. The Pyrex is the one category where the big picture, (want to move away from storing food in plastic) outweighs the buy nothing new goal. I would certainly buy used Pyrex leftover containers (with snap-on lids) used, but they’re hard to find.

The journalist wanted to know what other people’s Compact exceptions were, and I kind of drew a blank. I posted a query on the Compact Yahoo group and the answers are starting to trickle in.

Home improvement items, unmentionables, office supplies and shoes are showing up on the listserve, which brings me to the questions:

What would you never even consider buying used?

Are you okay with used shoes, but need your pillows to be new? Would you have no problem with used books, but magazine have to be fresh from the news stand?

This panorama was pieced together from four photographs

A panorama (adj. panoramic) is an ultra-wide photograph that is (normally) pieced together from multiple images. They provide a unique way to view scenery, landscapes or anything that’s really, really wide…

How To Take A Panorama

First off, to take a really good panorama you must use a tripod. Although a lot of compact cameras come with easy-to-use panorama functions, they’re rubbish compared to doing things the proper way. You’ve got to use a tripod to achieve the same angle all the way through the image (as much as is possible).

Set your camera to manual and try and get the settings to suit the entire subject for your panorama. You mustn’t change the settings at all for the entirety of the panorama, otherwise you’ll end up with each segment not matching the rest. What you could do is adjust your camera’s exposure etc. against the middle of your viewpoint and then move it from left to right, ensuring that the exposure meter doesn’t go too high or low from the optimum exposure.

Once you’re ready, take as many photos as are necessary and overlap each by about 20%. This will allow your computer software to accurately piece together the panorama.

Although there are some dedicated software solutions for making panoramas, I highly recommend using Adobe Photoshop for the job. I won’t go into the details of how it’s done (right now), but I will mention that panoramas often come out bent (as above) due to it being almost impossible to get the vertical angle at 0 degrees, unless you have accurate levels.

Photoshop’s warp tool is excellent at correcting this problem. I might do an extension of this post at a later date that will go into the details of the procedure.

Fara, aparatul este atat de simplu incat este inutil sa “murdaresc” desenul.

Aparatul este o legenda, pentru ca este primul aparat foto de consum care nu este adresat fotografiilor. Creaza sintagma de “point and shoot” din cauza simplitatii de care da dovada, avand literalmente 2 pasi pentru fotografiere.

1. Indreapta aparatul spre subiect si incadreaza imaginea prin una din cele 2 prisme de sticla montate pe cele 2 fatete ale aparatului. (POINT)

2. Declansaza si dupa ce ai declansat avanseaza filmul (SHOOT)

Focus nu exista pentru ca diafragma este f/16 si distanta focala aproximativ 100. Timpii de expunere sunt B si circa 1/25 chiar daca in practica timpul este mai mult 1/10~1/100.

Declansatorul este chestia rotunda de pe panoul lateral, si este prevazut cu un intrerupator pentru apasare acidentala. Deasupra acestora este selectarea timpului de expunere ( ) ) , in stanga acestora tot pe panoul acela este filtru de Close up (focus sub 1m) si filtrul galben pentru portrete cu mai mult constrast. Si roata mare este pentru avansarea peliculei, pe spatele aparatului fiind o fereastra de vizitare ca sa vezi cat avansezi.

Filmul folosit este 127. Acest film nu se mai produce de zeci de ani si a fost inlocuit de filmul de 120 care incape in locas dar doar cu putin ajutor din partea unui cutit. Trebuie sa tai 5mm din marginile mosorului (trebuie facut mai subtire) si intra perfect.

For a guy who eschews impact, Colin Beavan sure knows how to make one. Not only is his book No Impact Man: The Adventures of a Guilty Liberal Who Attempts to Save the Planet and the Discoveries He Makes About Himself and our Way of Life in the Process creating a buzz everywhere from The Colbert Report to The Huffington Post, but he’s just completed a nationwide tour to publicize his book.

For those not in the know, Colin Beavan, (a.k.a. No Impact Man) dragged his wife and young daughter along for an experiment to live the entirety of 2007 creating as little environmental impact as possible. Beavan and family were not going the traditional back-to-the-land route, but tried to achieve their no impact goals while living on the high impact island of Manhattan.

The Beavans’ well documented and blogged about year included such highlights as washing their clothing in the bathtub in a manner usually saved for grape stompers, pedal-powered transportation and only eating food grown within 250 miles of Manhattan. Gone was electricity, which meant no television, elevators, lighting or refrigeration.

But it wasn’t all deprivation. The family of three discovered the imbedded joys of an unplugged life without the distractions of modern life. Hot summer nights found them avoiding the swelter of an non-air-conditioned apartment and biking over to the not-so-nearby Hudson River Park. A location that Beavan described as “too long to walk to, yet difficult to get to by public transportation.”

Recently, Beavan’s book tour brought him up the west coast, with a reading at Portland’s own Powell’s City of Books. He generously took time from his schedule to sit down with me and answer a few questions about his life before, during and after the No Impact Man experiment.

We chose to meet in the bookstore’s coffee shop, and I was little concerned that I might not recognize Beavan. But I should not have worried, as his 350.org T-shirt and glass peanut butter jar/travel mug announced his no-impacty-ness more than any headshot could.

Introductions were made and we swiftly got down to business as time was in short supply. I had already read his book, (yes, I had broken The Compact to buy my own copy.) and had a large number of questions to get through in a short amount of time.

Above and beyond any academic questions I may have had, I was curious to know how Beavan was traveling for his book tour. Was he taking the train? Had he driven the 3000 miles by Prius? Or had he perhaps hired a raw food eating eco-dude to pull him across the country in a vehicle concocted entirely from recyclables and the sweat of a single emu? No such luck, as he’d flown west in a commercial airline. However, Beavan did get his publisher to donate $500 in “carbon penance” to Solar Electric Light Fund, (a.k.a. SELF) which is:

“Fighting climate change and global poverty with solar power, so families can lift themselves out of poverty by having clean, safe water to drink; food to eat; vaccinations to prevent disease; light to study and work by; computers at school to help them learn; and power to increase their income.”

Okay. Not as exciting as the eco-dude, but perhaps ever so slightly more helpful to those in need.

When asked if his message was getting across, Beavan answered that “people are paying attention” and that “the time is right for a discussion on quality of life versus environmental catastrophe.” He also explained that, “we are stuck in a system that’s not necessarily working . We need to work together to make the system reflect how we want to live.”

Now that Beavan and his family have completed their social/ecological experiment, what has changed?

For starters, Beavan’s wife Michelle, a self proclaimed TV addict has not brought television back into their apartment, and neither has she returned to her former social shopper ways. Beavan still cycles around Manhattan and explains that biking has made the city, “seem smaller.”

Beavan also continues to only buy second-hand, having recently purchased a six-month-old/half the price Macintosh computer that was still under warranty.

What didn’t stick? Well, washing all laundry by hand, (or by foot as the case had been) was one of the first No-Impact changes to get reversed. This daunting task actually got abandoned before the year was up when Beavan’s daughter Isabella was sick and vomiting. (Because really, who wants to stomp around in that?!)

Beavan is proud to admit that both he and his wife “got healthier.” The no takeout rule required home cooking, (mostly by Colin) from which Michelle enjoyed comparing her husband to a “1950’s housewife.”

Although Beavan did conduct his No Impact year with a book contract in place, he explained that he took one-quarter of the normal advance compared to prior books. Although there is a Columbia Pictures feature film “in development.”

Having finished  both the yearlong project, the book and even the documentary, Beavan is putting his efforts into various No Impact weeks as well as the non-profit No Impact Project whose goal is, “To empower citizens to make choices which better their lives and lower their environmental impact through lifestyle change, community action, and participation in environmental politics.”

The No Impact Man blog is still in place and focuses more on how to become more involved with policy change, rather than the personal journeys made by Colin, Michelle and daughter Isabella.

Alas, the time for my interview was over before I knew it, and together the two us walked up the two flights of stairs for Beavan’s reading, which boasted 70+ attendees despite pretty minimal publicity.

Greater Tokyo is the world’s most populated urban area, and therefore space is not plentiful. One of the coolest things about Japanese architecture is their incredible use of the limited space available. Designers and architects both come up with incredible ways of fitting a lot into a little.

Interior design will feature in some upcoming posts, but today an example of the way any available space can be creatively utilized. In other cities there would simply be a fence between the railway lines and the road, but in Tokyo – a building! These small apartments look adorable, and no doubt inside are filled with space-saving design ideas.
