Last week I gave myself the task of cleaning out the server/store room. While I am not a fan of having the server room as a store room, its not my room or equipment so I have no say in the matter. Anyway while cleaning up the place I came across a bunch of old software and equipment that I was really very surprised to see in there.

Firstly a bunch of backups of the server… from 1995 – 1999…. on CD! Yes thats right, CD. Ok so find a box and through them all in there for archiving.

Next on the list is a Compaq C140 Ultra portable computer circa 1997…awesome!… docking station… more awesome… still works… bigger awesome….. wait… hold on… what am I going to use it for?

I also uncovered some old and forgotten software, first up iSYS ver 5, boasting 32-bit for Windows 95! I have never used iSYS in the present or the past. So apart from the age of the software I dont really have anything to add. Maybe someone on eBay would want it? haha

Also on the list is Adobe Acrobat Professional 4 which is boasting that it works with Windows Office! So thats handy to have, again maybe eBay

Finally on the software front are a bunch of Microsoft and Lotus disks, which I am keeping. Why? I do not know

The Compaq f750us that I have has been through a lot, from being puched, thrown, kicked, and a few more things I’d rather not mention, also I forgot that it had been rained on, it still works perfectly.  Knowing how durable this thing is, someone I know wants to buy it for $300 plus a ps3 suffering from a yellow light of death.  I know how to fix that, but the question is “How long will it last?” so you’ll probably see me selling the working parts out of that ps3 on ebay.  I’ll use all of that money to buy myself a netbook because I don’t need the power of a full laptop, the most I’ll probably do on it is scan for viruses of f of my usb to IDE/SATA.  If I think about it this way at least the keyboard won’t be dented in like the f750us.

Hello everyone. Today I will be reviewing the pc/laptop selection at Best Buy for this black friday sale. For those of you who don’t know what black friday is. It is a sale held the morning after thanksgiving “November 27th this year” where lines are wrapped around the building waiting for the store to open to get the cheapest deals of the year. Now I know that there are some people who don’t know what they are looking for in a computer, so before my review I will give a cheat sheet on what to look for. Here I will list 3 main things to look for.

Hard Drive -Also abbreviated as HD the size of the hard drive will determine how much information can be stored on your computer. The size of the hard drives that I will review are sorted from Gigabytes (GB) and Terabytes (TB). Now just to let you know how large a TB is you would need 1000 GB to equal 1 TB.

Random access memory – Most always abbreviated as (Ram) or just memory comes in a much lower number than hard drives. Do not confuse Hard drive for Ram, Ram determines speed not storage and can be added to a computer much easier than a hard drive. the ram in my review will range from 1 GB to 8 GB.

Central Processing Unit – Abbreviated as (CPU) the main purpose of the cpu is to carry out the instructions of a computer program. CPU’s are the main reason that the cost of a computer can range so much in price. The leaders in the cpu market are Intel and AMD. Bottom line the better the cpu the faster and better at  multitasking your computer will be.

Now on to the reviews.

First off the Compaq Netbook w/Intel Atom Processor, 1GB Memory, 160GB Hard Drive – $179.99 Great for surfing the web and to type up work on the go, and with a 160GB HD you could store lots of music,pictures, and work files. but I wouldn’t try to take on any video games with the low 1gb of ram/memory. For the price I think that this is one of the better laptops out this season. Now there is also an alternative model of this that is the same except for a larger 250GB hard drive and a larger price tag of $229.99.

Next we have the Dell 10.1″ Netbook w/Intel Atom Processor, 1GB Memory, 160GB Hard Drive – $379.99  Here you are paying more for the Dell name, and I wouldn’t recommend to get a dell seeing as anyone I know who has had a dell has it break down within the year.That and the price tag is way to heavy for what it is offering. Come on this is supposed to be a sale!

Now on to a PC with the eMachines Desktop w/AMD Athlon Processor, 3GB RAM, 320GB HD, Windows 7, w/18.5″ LCD Monitor and HP Deskjet Printer – $299.97  Now emachines aren’t the best that money can buy but they get the job done, and with this you could get a lot done. If you are looking for an all in one under $300 you don’t get any better than this. This would be a great gift for someone who is starting out or anyone who wants to play games, download music, surf the web, or type up work.

If you were wondering about a laptop with the power and handling of most normal pc’s  here it is the HP 15.6″ Notebook w/AMD Turion II Dual Core Processor M500, 6GB Memory, 320GB Hard Drive, Windows 7 – $599.99 And if there isn’t enough ram and HD on that for your needs there is another model the HP 15.6″ Notebook w/AMD Turion II Dual Core Processor M500, 8GB Memory, 500GB Hard Drive, Windows 7 – $699.99  But with a large ram and hard drive they also get a large price tag to back them up. Now if you really need that much power to carry around with you then by all means, but if you just need a sit at home pc with even more power and lower price tag then I would just wait for what I have next.

This I believe is the buy of the night the HP Desktop AMD X4 Quad Core, 8GB Memory, 1TB Hard Drive w/20″ Monitor, HP Deskjet DJ350 Color Printer & Windows 7 Home Premium – $499.97 Now this all in one pc this pc would  usually run for about $1400 retail without the printer and monitor. And with a 1TB hard drive  and 8 GB of ram it blows any other computer for sale out of the water in terms of storage and speed. Some may still be scared of the price but remember a computer is only as good as what you use it for, if all you are doing is surfing the web and typing papers then you don’t need a high end computer. But if you want to download music/pictures, play games , watch movies and everything else that you could think of then you need the tools for the job and then some.

On to a mac or as I called them in school macentrashes Macbook 13.3″ Notebook w/2.26GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB DDR3 Memory, 250GB Hard Drive, w/$150 Gift Card – $999.99 Now its not that I hate macs its just that they are more of a business computer and horrible at multitasking, and with a $999.99 price tag and not very impressive ram and hd size I feel like im just paying for the name. p.s. last time I got a gift card I couldn’t use it until my next visit.

We are reaching the end of the barrel with the Sony 15″ Laptop w/Intel Dual Core Processor, 4GB Memory, 320GB Hard Drive, Windows 7 – $399.99  and the  Sony 15″ Laptop w/Intel Dual Core Processor, 4GB RAM, 320GB HD, Windows 7, Sony Headphones, Built-In Blu-ray, Blu-ray Movie – $479.97 Both great for gaming but only one has a Blu-ray for watching blu-ray movies. my answer to this is buy a PS3 if you want a gaming system by sony that can play blu-ray. On the other hand it is a great laptop at a fair price.

last but not least the Toshiba 16″ Laptop w/Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, 3GB DDR3 Memory, 250GB Hard Drive (Model # L505-S5984) – $399.99  and the Toshiba 16″ Laptop w/Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, 4GB DDR3 Memory, 320GB Hard Drive (Model # L505-S5984) w/Printer and Case – $499.97 Did I say not least oops sorry about that. both of these laptops come with very little features and a very undesirable price tag.

I'm Sick!

Not my computer, fortunately.

A friend bought me her laptop computer today. It’s a 9-month old Compaq Presario CQ20 running Windows XP. She said it was running very slowly, had many windows popping up on the screen and would not type in the Thai language any more.

I started it up and indeed it ran very slowly. The first pop-up I saw was for some shareware wallpaper changer. I asked her if she wanted it and she said she had no idea where it came from. Her English isn’t so good and she always clicked “Yes” when she encountered a dialog box. I disabled it without a problem.

She had an old version of the free AVG virus scanner on the computer. I opened it and tried to update it to the latest version. It complained that it could not find the avg.com domain. I tried going to avg.com in her web browser but it got a DNS error. I tried symantec.com, makers of Norton Anti Virus, and got the same problem.

But it could browse other internet sites successfully. Something had inserted itself in between the browser and the DNS service and was blocking access to anti-malware sites.

From that I knew that the computer was very sick, even though it wasn’t showing other signs of infection other than being slow. I asked if she had the original Windows XP install CDs. No – the shop configured her machine for her and didn’t give her any CDs.

I knew it was beyond my capabilities to fix. I think the best solution is to reformat the hard drive and reinstall Windows from scratch. But I’d have to get Windows install CDs and also find all the proprietary drivers for a discontinued computer.

I called a friend who’s a professional at these things and has all the right tools. He agreed to fix it tonight. There are times when you need an expert.

She said she didn’t have any files on the machine that she needed to save; after using it for nine months. I think I could have saved her files to a CD without infecting it but I am not sure even that is safe.

Of course my friend had no idea what I was talking about. She’d used her computer for surfing the net, email and chatting but had no idea what she was doing. Maybe I worry too much about the safety of my computer but this was a good lesson on the dangers of not worrying enough.

I was a bit worried even having her computer on the same internet connection as mine. I’ve turned off things like Windows File Sharing and run a firewall but I expect it was still busy probing for other computers it could infect. I didn’t even trust that the network connection taskbar icon showed no activity. I bet there are ways of fooling it so a user does not know that her computer is doing bad things on the network behind her back.

3com corporation lleva mucho tiempo con dificultad para tener el capital y pericia para crecer su participación de mercado, en este proceso lleva varios intentos por adquirir capital de huawei pero el gobierno norteamericano a utilizado todo lo que tiene a la mano para que una empresa china no controle a un proveedor de tecnología estratégica del gobierno norteamericano. Eso es un problema de seguridad según el pentagono.

Pero este problema de seguridad se convirtió en un problema económico para 3com. Durante este proceso nació huawei3com, o 3comhuawei para algunos. Pero esto no ayudo a 3com sino fue la plataforma para que huawei entrara al mercado latinoamericano ya que en esa época los routers 3com eran iguales a los huawei, pero tenían dos diferencias, el color y que los 3com eran más caros, así que a los routers 3com no les fue bien. El último sabor de estos intentos fue H3C, pero sigue sin ser un jugador importante ya que no han logrado quitarse el rotulo de chinos.

La respuesta a este problema fue sorpresiva pero a gusto del gobierno norteamericano y es que 3com fuera comprada por una empresa de confianza para el gobierno norteamericano y esta empresa fue HP. Una empresa que al igual que 3com, no ha sido muy afortunada con sus adquisiciones. No hace mucho fue la compra de compaq y en esta oportunidad se demostró la teoría de que 1+1 =0.8 ya que la suma de compaq mas hp, genero una empresa más pequeña que hp.

Uno de los inconvenientes de este tipo de adquisiciones es cuando hay líneas de productos que son competencia directa o sustituta y este es el caso de nuevo, ya que HP tiene líneas de equipos activos de muy poco éxito en el mercado latinoamericano, pero que igual existen. No creo que HP piense hacer cambios drásticos en las líneas de productos de 3com, pero estamos cercanos a una ola de tímidos anuncios sobre el futuro de los diferentes productos de ambas empresas.

Lo primero que piensa la gente al escuchar las noticias es que pasara al enfrentarse la línea procurve con las líneas similares de 3com y que tecnología prevalecerá.

En este sentido la tecnología 3com estaba virando a la tecnología huawei, ya la mayoría de los switch 3com se manejan igual que un huawei, pero falta ver que ocurre es ese sentido con la tecnología procurve

Pero esto tiene un efecto en el mundo de las comunicaciones unificadas que no ha sido visto a simple vista. Y es que 3com, estaba entrando en este mundo con su plataforma VCX, un solución poco conocida y que hasta ahora no ha logrado una interesante participación de mercado versus avaya, cisco y Microsoft y que no compite con productos actuales de HP, así que debería hp apoyarla y darle recursos y tecnología para mejorar su participación en el mercado. Aunque dos socios importantes de la alianza tecnológica procurve ONE son avaya y Microsoft, los cuales pueden ver con no muy buenos ojos la entrada de HP al mercado de las comunicaciones unificadas.

De todos modos, las comunicaciones unificadas llegaron para quedarse y lo que conocemos como planta de teléfonos está desapareciendo rápidamente, como lo hemos dicho en varios blogs. Ya no solo los fabricantes de plantas telefónicas están en este proceso, sino nuevos jugadores como Microsoft, IBM y ahora HP.

I’m planning to buy a laptop maybe this end of November or first week of December. This will be my birthday gift for myself. But I’m torn between this 2 laptop models, Compaq Presario CQ40-551TU and Dell Inspiron 14 (ALBA) T4200. Almost the same specs and price based on what I’ve researched. ni salah satu cara yang patut di coba :

Semua driver Compaq Presario CQ40-401 hampir semuanya sudah kompatibel dengan Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope. Namun untuk dukungan suara sedikit bermasalah dan membutuhkan beberapa konfigurasi untuk bisa bekerja.
Untuk mengatasinya, ikuti langkah-langkah berikut :

1. Jalankan aplikasi terminal pada menu Applications -> Accesories -> Terminal;

$ sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

2. Pada baris akhir alsa-base.conf tambahkan baris-baris berikut ini;

alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=dell-m4-1
options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1

3. Selanjutnya buka System -> Preferences -> Sound Pilih semua settingan ke ALSA lalu klik OK;



4. Kembali lagi ke terminal dan edit file /etc/group dengan perintah berikut;

$ sudo gedit /etc/group

audio:x:29:pulse

Menjadi

audio:x:29:[user_login],pulse

contoh

audio:x:29:ugos,pulse

5. Setelah selesai save file di atas kemudian restart Ubuntu Anda,  jika pada saat memasuki welcome screen mengeluarkan suara berarti konfigurasi anda berhasil, jika belum berhasil coba cek satu persatu file yang tadi anda rubah samakan dengan settingan di atas.

Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04 is coming by default with the version 1.0.18rc3 of Alsa so I decided to upgrade to the last version wich is 1.0.21.

What is Alsa (Advanced Linux Sound Architecture) ?

According to Wikipedia, Alsa is a Linux kernel component intended to replace the original Open Sound System (OSS) for providing device drivers for sound cards. Some of the goals of the ALSA project at its inception were automatic configuration of sound-card hardware, and graceful handling of multiple sound devices in a system, goals which it has largely met.

Installation :

To do this, we must begin by determining our version of alsa as follows :

cat /proc/asound/version
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.18rc3.

To avoid problems during the upgrade of Alsa-utils, we need to stop it with the following command :

sudo /etc/init.d/alsa-utils stop

sudo apt-get -y install build-essential ncurses-dev gettext xmlto
sudo apt-get -y install linux-headers-`uname -r` libncursesw5-dev

Then, we go in our personal folder and download alsa-driver, alsa-lib and alsa-utils :

cd ~
rm -rf ~/alsa* ~/.pulse*
wget ftp://ftp.alsa-project.org/pub/driver/alsa-driver-1.0.21.tar.bz2
wget ftp://ftp.alsa-project.org/pub/lib/alsa-lib-1.0.21a.tar.bz2

After that, we create a new folder for the compilation and installation of the 3 files. Then, we move the 3 tar files that we just downloaded in this folder :

sudo rm -rf /usr/src/alsa
sudo mkdir -p /usr/src/alsa
cd /usr/src/alsa
sudo cp ~/alsa* .

Unpack the 3 tar files :

sudo tar xjf alsa-driver*
sudo tar xjf alsa-lib*
sudo tar xjf alsa-utils*

We compile and install alsa-driver :

cd alsa-driver*
sudo ./configure
sudo make
sudo make install

We compile and install alsa-lib :

cd ../alsa-lib*
sudo ./configure
sudo make
sudo make install

We compile and install alsa-utils :

cd ../alsa-utils*
sudo ./configure
sudo make
sudo make install

If like me, you got this error during the last “sudo ./configure” :

checking form.h presence... yes
checking for form.h... yes
checking for new_panel in -lpanelw... no
configure: error: panelw library not found

You will need to add those symbolics links (only if you got the error) and restart the installation from the last “sudo ./configure” :

sudo ln -s libpanelw.so.5 /usr/lib/libpanelw.so
sudo ln -s libformw.so.5 /usr/lib/libformw.so
sudo ln -s libmenuw.so.5 /usr/lib/libmenuw.so
sudo ln -s libncursesw.so.5 /lib/libncursesw.so

Then, we remove the 3 tar files in our personal folder that are not anymore necessary :

rm -f ~/alsa-driver*
rm -f ~/alsa-lib*
rm -f ~/alsa-utils*

Then, just restart your computer and your alsa version should be 1.0.21!

You can verify that you have now indeed have this version of alsa :

cat /proc/asound/version
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.21.
Compiled on Aug 31 2009 for kernel 2.6.28-15-generic (SMP).

Just to be sure everything is well configured, execute this command :

sudo alsaconf

Setelah sekian lama ingin nyicipin Ubuntu Karmic, akhirnya bisa nyoba juga, namun seperti biasa problem sound blom teratasi, seperti biasa, ARSIP BLOG PAKDHE!, namun caranya agak sedikit berbeda, lah wong ini Ubuntu 64bit lah

1. Pastikan CD Ubuntu Karmic 64bit sudah tersimpan manis di CDROM drive anda

2. Ketik ini

sudo apt-cdrom add (pastikan cd Ubuntu 64bitnya di CDrom drive) <– kalo udah dilakukan ngapain juga dilakukan lagi?
sudo apt-get install lib32asound2

3. Edit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

sudo kate /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

dan langsung tambahkan 2 baris berikut :

options snd-hda-intel model=hp-m4 enable=1 index=0
options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1

Restart… dan wow… langsung bunyi!

CATATAN :

sudo apt-cdrom add
sudo apt-get install lib32asound2
TIDAK BERLAKU DI UBUNTU KARMIC 32BIT!!
